    W artykule przedstawiono uwarunkowania polityczno-militarne i ich wpływ na uformowanie się po I wojnie światowej wschodniej granicy odrodzonej Polski. Była ta granica uzależniona od końcowego rezultatu wojny polsko-bolszewickiej, która trwała z różnym nasileniem w latach 1918-1920. W pierwszej fazie tego konfliktu zbrojnego przewaga była po stronie polskiej. Projektowano wówczas, że przyszła granica będzie przebiegała stosunkowo daleko na wschodzie. Miała mieć ona tradycyjnie układ południkowy i rozciągać się w przybliżeniu między rzeką Berezyną na północy i Dniestrem na południu. W sytuacji zbliżania się Armii Czerwonej do Wisły w sierpniu 1920 istniało prawdopodobieństwo likwidacji państwa polskiego. Dopiero pokonanie Armii Czerwonej w Bitwie Warszawskiej umożliwiło rozpoczęcie rokowań na tematy graniczne. W końcowej części artykułu zreferowano przebieg i wyniki Konferencji Pokojowej w Rydze. Ustalono na niej granicę między Polską a bolszewicką Rosją. Trwała ona od 12 października 1920 do 17 września 1939 roku, kiedy to została unicestwiona w rezultacie agresji sowieckiej na Polskę.
    The article presents the political and military conditions and their impact on the formation of the eastern border of the reborn Poland after World War I. This border was dependent on the final result of the Polish-Bolshevik war, which lasted with varying intensity in the years 1918 - 1920. In the first phase of this armed conflict, the advantage was on the Polish side. It was then planned that the future border would run relatively far to the east. It was supposed to have a longitudinal layout and spread approximately between the Berezina River in the north and the Dniester River in the south. In the situation of approaching the Red Army to the Vistula in August 1920, there was a likelihood of liquidation of the Polish state. It was only the defeat of the Red Army in the Battle of Warsaw that enabled the commencement of equivalent negotiations on border issues. In the final part of the article, the course and results of the Peace Conference in Riga were reported. A border was established between Poland and Bolshevik Russia. It lasted from October 12, 1920 to September 17, 1939, when it was annihilated as a result of Soviet aggression against Poland.

    Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy problematyki ochrony wschodniej granicy Polski przez Wojska Ochrony Pogranicza. Omówione w nim zostały losy trzech Brygad Ochrony Pogranicza, podlaskiej, nadbużańskiej i przemyskiej, na przełomie lat 1945-1991. Autor przedstawił struktury organizacyjne wschodnich brygad WOP oraz wskazał powody ich zmian w całym okresie funkcjonowania Wojsk Ochrony Pogranicza w Polsce. Ciekawym elementem artykułu jest opisywana przez autora koncepcja odejścia od bezpośredniej ochrony wschodniej granicy Polski w latach 1956-1957. Powołanie w miejsce brygad jedynie trzech kilkudziesięcioosobowych grup manewrowych powodowało, że polska granica wschodnia chroniona była w zasadzie jedynie przez Wojska Ochrony Pogranicza ZSSR. Problematyka dotycząca WOP i ochrony wschodniej granicy Polski po II wojnie światowej wymaga od historyków zajmujących się tymi zagadnieniami jeszcze wielu badań. Polska granica wschodnia w czasach PRL pozostała w cieniu zarówno wydarzeń politycznych, jak społecznych. Autor uważa, że artykuł ten pozwoli choć trochę przybliżyć i poznać to skomplikowane zagadnienie jakim była ochrona wschodniej granicy Polski w latach 1945-1991.
    The present article is concerned with the issue of controlling the eastern border of the Republic of Poland by the Border Guard. the history of three Border Guard Brigades is discussed in it: that of the Podlaska, Nadbużańska and Przemyska ones, in the years 1945-1991. the author presents the organizational structure of the eastern brigades of the BG and points to the reasons why it was changed in the period when the Border Guard performed its duties in Poland. the conception of departing from the direct control of the eastern border of Poland in the years 1956-1957 that the author describes, is an interesting element of the article. Establishing only three maneuver groups, each numbering several dozen men, instead of the brigades was the cause why the Polish border was in fact controlled by the Soviet Border Guard only. the issue of the Border Guard and of controlling the eastern border of Poland after World War II requires further research on the part of the historians studying the problem. the Polish eastern border at the time of the Polish People's Republic remained in the shadow of both political and social events. the author hopes that the article to some extent helps explain the complicated issue of controlling the Polish border in the years 1945-1991.

    The eastern border protection subsystem of the People’s Republic of Poland (with the USSR) was one of the four subsystems protecting the Polish state border, which in the years from the end of World War II until the dissolution of the Border Protection Forces (WOP-15 May 1991) secured the protection of this section. The first part of the article discusses such issues as: tasks performed by WOP, organisation and changes in the system of border protection of the People’s Republic of Poland in the years 1945–1991, forces and means of WOP participating in the protection of the border of the People’s Republic of Poland until the mid-1980s and the division of the borderland, as well as crimes committed on the borderland and the border between the People’s Republic of Poland and the USSR.
    Podsystem ochrony granicy wschodniej PRL (z ZSRR) był jednym z czterech podsystemów ochrony polskiej granicy państwowej, który w latach od zakończenia II wojny światowej do rozwiązania Wojsk Ochrony Pogranicza (WOP–15 maja 1991 r.) zabezpieczał ochronę tego odcinka. W części pierwszej artykułu omówiono takie zagadnienia jak: zadania realizowane przez WOP, organizacje i zmiany w systemie ochrony granicy PRL w latach 1945–1991, siły i środki WOP uczestniczące w ochronie granicy PRL do połowy lat 80. XX w. oraz podział pogranicza a także przestępstwa popełniane na pograniczu i granicy PRL–ZSRR.

    Opis:
    This article presents an analysis of borderland organizations in eastern Poland. It examines the nature of organizations creating the idea of a borderland, their territorial location, and the meanings of the borderland representations they create. The category of “borderland” is mainly used by local self-governments and NGOs. After 1989, these actors concentrated on organizing the region’s ethnic differences. The oldest borderland organizations are focused on the multicultural past of the region. Poland’s accession to the EU resulted in the reorganization of cross-border relations in connection with the emergence of new organizations interested in the state border or in the profits associated with proximity to it. The idea of a borderland in eastern Poland is supported by a small number of local institutions, which have not created a unified representation of what the borderland is. Therefore, the region has retained features of a coexisting and/or interdependent borderland.
