Opis:
Affective learner factors were first considered as a cause of success in language learning. This was followed by a change in approach and recently authors (e.g., Edelenbos, Johnstone, & Kubanek, 2006) have considered them an important outcome, especially in early foreign language learning (FLL). Current research into affective learner factors in early FLL tries to catch the developmental aspects too, and studies are emerging that take a contextual view as well. This paper describes a study on affective characteristics of young FL learners that combines the developmental and contextual perspectives. Using the case study methodology the author analyses the affective profiles of three young learners of English as a foreign language who were followed for 4 years. The analyses are done taking into account their immediate language learning environment, home support, out-of-school exposure to English and language achievement. The findings suggest that affective learner factors contribute to the dynamic complexity of early FLL.

Opis:
This paper reports on the qualitative part of a project investigating parental educational aspirations as manifested by enrolling their children (aged 3-6) into very early L2 instruction. The concept of educational aspirations is widely studied in educational psychology as well as in sociology and pedagogy. In SLA, these aspirations can fit in the new framework of imagery and creating visions as they are a part of an ideal L2 self. Data analysis concludes that parental visions towards their children’s achievement reflect self-efficacy beliefs; in other words, those parents who were unsuccessful foreign language (FL) learners themselves hoped that by starting early their children would learn lingua franca English well and this would help them achieve educational and vocational success, which indicates an instrumental motive. By contrast, those parents who were successful language learners were positive about their children’s future plurilingual attainment, not necessarily voicing the necessity of “an early start.” They believe languages contribute to overall emotional and cognitive growth, which shows more intrinsic and integrative motives. These findings suggest that the differences in ultimate FL attainment may start very early and are rooted in the social (family) context.

The case study aims to provide insights into how a Hungarian EFL teacher used tests, assessed her young learners and gave feedback to them in the classroom. This qualitative, exploratory study was a follow-up to a large-scale project. In this single-case study, data were collected from an EFL teacher and five of her seventh graders on what tasks she used to assess them and how. The participants were interviewed. For the purpose of triangulation, the students were also audio- and video-recorded while doing four speaking tasks, and two classes were observed. The results revealed that for the teacher with decades of teaching experience there was room for improvement in her knowledge of age-appropriate teaching methodology and that some of her beliefs and practices reflected a lack of understanding how children develop. She had difficulty diagnosing her students’ strengths and weaknesses. The learners were rarely provided with feedback on their performance and language development; therefore, they did not see how much they had progressed. Low achievers had a hard time catching up with their peers; and they lagged further behind. The teacher seemed to be more interested in what her students did not know rather than focusing on what they could do.

This article reports on a number of projects on early English teaching in the Netherlands. The focus of these projects has been on the impact of English on the development of the mother tongue and the development of skills in the foreign language. Overall the results show that there is no negative effect on the mother tongue and that the gains in English proficiency are substantial. Given the specific situation in the Netherlands where English is very present, in particular in the media, a real comparison of the findings with those from other countries is problematic.

The objective of the article is to present some valid arguments for a “new” didactics of early foreign language teaching. The foreign language teaching in Poland has become an obligatory part of the curriculum in kindergartens and pre-schools (for 5 years-olds), and from the beginning of Sept. 2017 it will also concern all 3 and 4 years old children in pre-school education. Didactic principles and materials for teaching foreign languages that are applied in kindergartens are designed mainly for grade 1-3 of the primary school and cannot be automatically adopted for the earlier educational stages. The didactic process must be founded on linguistic and glottodidactic study of natural language acquisition, bilingualism and bilingual education. In the article some most important differences between the language learning process in the primary school and kindergarten are discussed and conclusions for the shaping of the language teaching and learning situation in pre-schools are drawn. In the last part some selected examples of the “new” teaching forms and activities will be presented.

Opis:
The article presents research on possible interpretations of Core Curriculum provisions in the area of linguistic education for the 1st educational stage: grades 1 – 3, early school education. Core Curriculum is a starting point of planning and organisation of educational process, linguistic education included. While its interpretation is dependent on numerous factors, it was assumed that basic interpretation direction is dictated by the language of the Core Curriculum itself. The objective of the article was to reflect on meanings in Core Curriculum provisions, which become a vital influence on early school language learning. The regarded problem is thus: how does the language of Core Curriculum dictate possible methods of interpretation in educational strategies? Language acquirement theories overview was presented in relation to the school didactics appearing in various pedagogic paradigms. Then, Core Curriculum provisions were analysed and matched to specific didactic options, including their relations to language acquisition theories. In the analysis, category of „linguistic image of the world” was used, which allows to reveal point of view of document authors on theoretical and didactic bases of early school language learning. Core Curriculum provisions turn out to be equivocal or even contradictory in relation to the theoretical basis, which implicates chaos in the didactic interpretation.

Opis:
Along the lines of “early start” issue in EU language policy children are starting to learn foreign languages at an increasingly early age. It goes without saying that autonomous learning brings about a wide range of educationally and developmentally important benefits like positive emotionality, greater intrinsic motivation, higher academic achievement, and undoubtedly helps the student to realise and accept the fact that learning a foreign language is a life-long occupation. Developing and supporting learner autonomy is therefore becoming more and more significant since the early stages of primary school. Considering autonomous learning in primary education one should take into account cognitive, emotional and social determinants that can either limit or boost the autonomization process. The purpose of this article is to take a closer look at these determinants as well as to give some suggestions and present a few active teaching techniques that support learner autonomy at this stage of education.

Opis:
This article refers to one of the important objectives in teaching mathematics – shaping its formal language. It raises the question of teaching methods in crossing the decimal threshold in addition and subtraction, used in Poland for over 50 years, that are too formal for students of the first educational stage, and that boil down to successive transformations on a symbolic level. On one hand, there will be presented a theoretical analysis of literature concerning the formation of the language of mathematics and inefficient methods associated with a too early transition to the level of symbolic writing, that can lead to the danger of formalism in teaching mathematics. On the other hand, based on fragments of the research, there will be presented extreme difficulties of a second grade student in a primary school in the process of crossing of the threshold of ten in symbolic writing and examples of the use of less formal writing for children, adapted to their natural development. Considerations in the article suggests leaving a rigid school methodology, while encouraging the use of less formal writing in computational mathematics in early childhood education, as a transitional stage in the development of a proper formal language for students.

Naturalna skłonność dziecka do zabawy stwarza okazje do poznawania świata, nawiązywania więzi społecznych i stanowi główny motor jego rozwoju psychicznego i fizycznego. Przedstawione są formy i zasady zastosowania gier i zabaw podczas lekcji języka obcego i korzyści językowe, poznawcze i społeczne płynące z nauczania poprzez zabawę.
Playing comes to children as naturally as breathing and is one of the most predominant forms of activity in a child’s life from infancy to adolescence. In fact, the right to engage in developmentally-appropriate play and leisure activities is now recognised internationally as one of the basic human rights of children (UNCRC, Article 31, 1989). Children’s playful disposition constitutes a powerful developmental drive whose educational potential cannot be ignored. In order to initiate and maintain meaningful interaction and create developmentally-appropriate learning opportunities, foreign language (FL) teachers of young learners’ need to acknowledge play as a central element of early foreign language pedagogy. This paper takes up the issue of learning through play and argues that play-based activities should constitute the core of good classroom practice in young learners’ FL instruction. It begins with a definition of play and a discussion of the centrality of play in early and later child development. It then considers the rationale for incorporating elements of play in the FL classroom and presents a range of its benefits and possible applications. Finally, a typology and examples of play-based tasks for very young and young learners are provided followed by some practical guidelines for implementing play in the classroom. The paper concludes with a list of resources for teachers who are willing to integrate play in their curricula.

Każdy nauczyciel wczesnej edukacji w codziennej obserwacji (dziecko w sytuacji zadaniowej i zabawowej) i relacji językowej z dzieckiem, staje się świadomym i kompetentnym diagnostą.
The subject of the article focuses on the linguistic communication of a child in preschool and early school age. Language competences are defined as key to development and their acquisition process is described in the context of the educational and home environment. Determining the language level of a child's development is an important area of pedagogical diagnosis. Each early education teacher becomes a conscious and competent diagnostician in everyday observation (a child in a task and play situation) and in the linguistic relationship with the child. Experiencing the everyday life of a child in a remote learning situation allowed to observe and diagnose how the child's language and communication, dexterity and graphomotor skills, as well as awareness of the handwriting develop in the period of on-line learning.
