    This paper seeks to answer whether it is right to refer to the concepts of colonialism and colonization when interpreting the history of the Republic of Poland. Drawing on the so-called post-colonial discourse in Poland, the author puts forward the problem of methodological nature. The point is that the basic concepts in this discourse are not well-defined and yet, despite this drawback, they are used as analytical categories in the reinterpretation of the history of Poland. This fact, as the author notes, deprives the post-colonial discourse of its being reliable and scientifically valuable. Addressing the problem posed by the initiator of the discourse under consideration, the author analyses first the concept of colony, colonization, and colonialism, and then examines whether it is justified to apply them in relation to the Republic of Poland. In the course of her analysis, she focuses also on the problem of the colonization of Poland by her three invaders: Russia, Prussia, and Austria. It follows from the analysis the, firstly, the concept of colonialism has no application in the interpretation of the past of Poland and its usage is a categorical abuse; the concept of colonization is used within certain limits and does not concern the state's activity, but the migration of settlers and attitudes adopted by some citizens in some periods of the Republic of Poland and her history; the concept of colonization, however, can be applied to the interpretation of politics of all three invaders towards the Polish Republic and all her resources.

    Główną inpiracją dla autora artykułu jest książka Edwarda Saida Orientalizm, a celem – podjęcie dyskusji na temat rozwoju pojęcia „orientalizm” w kontekście studiów postkolonialnych. Autor zwraca uwagę na materialną i kulturową przemoc kolonializmu zachodniego. Jednocześnie podkreśla konieczność wzięcia pod uwagę takich aspektów, jak pluralizm religijny, czy różnorodność kulturowa. Ma to ułatwić stworzenie platformy komunikacyjnej między pasywnym Wschodem a opresyjnym Zachodem.
    The main inspiration for this article’s author is Edward Said’s book Orientalism and the main goal discussion over the development of the conception of the orientalism in the context of postcolonial discourse. The author pays attention to cultural and material violence of Western colonialism. At the same time he highlights the necessity of taking into account such aspects as religious pluralism and cultural variety. It can enable a creation of a communication platformbetween a passive East and an oppressive West.

    The paper is divided into three parts. In the first one the most popular contexts of the research of the migrant literature are named: the actual debate about consequences of migrant policy and the figure of the author. In the second part three central metaphors in the novels of Erpenbeck, Khider and Köhlmeier are presented. These metaphors of exile are: disturbed time, lost life story, incomprehensible language. The third part contains an overview of the reception of the novels in Germany. The conventions of reading focus first of all on the two aforementioned non-fictional references (political context and author) without taking the metaphorical power of the texts into account. Thus the new migrant literature tends to become an equivalent for journalism and is read literally as a testimony of the author.

    Noch weit über dreißig Jahre nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung gibt es in der germanistischen Literaturwissenschaft in keiner Weise eine Einheitlichkeit in der Begriffsbestimmung zu der nach 1989 in Ostdeutschland geschriebenen Literatur. Termini wie Wendeliteratur, Regionalliteratur, ostdeutsche Literatur und Post-DDR-Literatur bestimmen die Aussagen. Dabei ist auffallend, dass in literaturwissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen der postkoloniale Diskurs über Jahre weitestgehend ausgeblendet bzw. sofort wieder in Frage gestellt wird. In der Aufnahme postkolonialer Verfahren wird in dem Beitrag der ‚dritte Raum‘ in der Post-DDR-Literatur bestimmt, indem die vom amerikanischen Kulturwissenschaftler und Philosophen Homi K. Bhabha geprägten ‚Gegengeschichten‘ in ihrer Bedeutung erschlossen werden, da sie kritische Perspektiven auf Einheit und Vielheit einer Nation sowie deren Postulat einer stabilen teleologisch und hegemonial informierten Geschichtspolitik artikulieren können.
    Jeszcze trzydzieści lat po zjednoczeniu Niemiec w literaturoznawstwie germanistycznym nie ujednolicono w żaden sposób określania literatury powstałej po 1989 roku w Niemczech Wschodnich. W wypowiedziach na ten temat pojawiają się pojęcia takie, jak ‘literatura przełomu’, ‘literatura regionalna’, ‘literatura wschodnioniemiecka’ lub ‘literatura post-NRD-owska’. Zauważalne jest równocześnie, że w pracach literaturoznawczych przez wiele lat unikano dyskursu postkolonialnego, bądź też natychmiast go negowano. W nawiązaniu do metod analizy zjawisk postkolonialnych w artykule określono ‘trzecią przestrzeń’ w literaturze post-NRD-owskiej poprzez uściślenie znaczenia tzw. ‘historii przeciwstawnych’ ukonstytuowanych przez amerykańskiego kulturoznawcę i filozofa Homi K. Bhabha, gdyż pozwalają one na krytyczne spojrzenie na jedność i wielość jednego narodu oraz jego postulat prowadzenia teleologicznie stabilnej i hegemonialnie zorientowanej polityki historycznej.
    The German unification process took for more than thirty years ago and still there is no consistency in German literary studies in how to define literature that has been produced in East Germany after 1989. There are terms like ‘Wendeliteratur’, ‘Regionalliteratur’, East German literature or Post-GDR-Literature. Postcolonial discourse has rarely been considered by German philologists or has been questioned from the core. By using postcolonial analysis methods my aim is to define the ‘third room’ in post-GDR-literature and to find ‘Gegengeschichten’ the American scientist and philosopher Homi K. Bhabha located in his postcolonial studies on modern nations. The ‘Gegengeschichten’ are able to articulate a critical perspective on unity and plurality of nations and questions their posit of a stable, teleological and hegemonical informed history policy.
