Opis:
The paper presents assessment of the value of selected beech and fir stands by the classic method and using the value tariff in two ways. The aim of the work was to verify the suitability of the local tariff method based on the SILP forest database for the valuation of timber resources in forests. The measurements were carried out in the Beskidy Mountains (southern Poland). The reference sales value of the beech and fir stands with the growing stock from 61 to 643 m3/ha ranged from 6,307 to 102,438 PLN/ha. The average value of stands is about 45,000 PLN/ha and the standard deviation around 20,000 PLN/ha, with an average volume of 340 m3/ha and standard deviation of 140 m3/ha. The monetary value of the uneven−aged fir and beech stands calculated by the mean of the local tariff of value (method 1) was different from the values calculated either basing on the traditional method or on the method 2. However, the difference was on average 11% when it came to the previous, and about 2.2% when for the latter method. Almost 50% of the stands were valuated using the second method with an error of ±2.5%, the maximum extreme negative error being –14% and the maximum extreme positive error being +11%. As soon as the calculation process were automatised, the present method to obtain the local monetary value tariff of forest resources could become a practical tool in the process of forest resources valuation for the needs of the State Forests and as such it could replace the so−far used stand value tables.

Opis:
The selection of the rotation time of a stand (from planting to final felling), i.e. the age at which stand reaches harvest maturity, is a key decision in forest management due to, inter alia, the amount and value of carbon stored in the forest. In this context, the basis for the economic optimisation of the rotation age of forests is to define the goal of forest production and desirable state of forests ensuring the achievement of the adopted aim. Therefore, the choice of the most suitable optimal moment of completing a production cycle and starting the subsequent one is very important in forest management. The aim of the performed analysis is to verify the empirical equations and conversion factors as well as to assess their suitability for determining the volume and value of standing timber and accumulation of carbon in the aboveground woody biomass. The verified equations will be used for modelling the optimal rotation age of forests due to the maximization of the rate of carbon accumulation in the aboveground woody biomass. The input data for the verification of equations and conversion factors were grouped according to the dominant species, 10−years age subclass and site index class. Four methodological approaches were used to analyse and estimate the amount of carbon accumulated in the aboveground woody biomass. With the assumption of a continuous use of forest land for timber production, the generated revenues will be same at the same level of costs in the subsequent production cycles. Analysing the results of the optimization of the age of felling maturity it should be noticed that these are the averaged values relating to the State Forests. They do not take into account local differences in the price of raw wood and production costs including the specific characteristics of individual trees or stands. The accuracy (quality) of calculating the average and current increment of stands and, in consequence, of the amount and value of the accumulated carbon is important for the effectiveness of the optimization of the amount of carbon accumulated in the aboveground woody biomass.

Opis:
Forest gaps, openings in the canopy caused by death of one or more trees, are the dominant form of natural disturbance in the temperate forests. Gaps play a critical role in driving stand dynamics and influencing forest growth cycle. They increase habitat diversity, structural complexity, fauna and flora species diversity. The size of a gap may strongly influence tree species regeneration composition, vegetation growth, nutrient cycling, microclimate and may have considerable effect on a number of biological processes. The main aim of this study was to understand the effects of gap size diversity on species composition and number of natural regeneration. The study was carried out in near−natural mixed stands dominated by beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) representing different development stages and phases in the Świętokrzyski National Park, (central Poland). All gaps over than 20 m 2 intersected by a transects line were sampled. All saplings and seedlings were counted in circular plots (10 m²) evenly spaced along the long axis in the N−S and E−W gradients of each gap. Natural regeneration was analyzed for 62 canopy gaps of various sizes. The gaps were classified into three size classes: small ≤100 m², medium 101−250 m² and large >250 m². The gap size ranged from 21 to 397 m², with a median of 104 m². The dominant tree species regenerated in gaps were fir (69%) and beech (24%). The number of regeneration significantly depended on the gap size (p=0.027). The highest frequency of saplings was found in gaps of ≤100 m². The number of natural regeneration was significantly negatively correlated with gap size (r=–0.261, p=0.040). The density of silver fir regeneration was significantly higher in gaps of ≤100 m² and 101−250 m² (p<0.05). The share of fir in stand species composition effected on the number of silver fir and European beech regeneration. The results of this study demonstrated the utility of gap−based approach for better understanding ecosystem responses to tree cutting for modern forest management.

Opis:
The paper presents time consumption assessment model (EST) of horse skidding operations in thinned stands taking into consideration factors related to stand, workday structure and characteristics of harvested timber. Significant differences in time consumption levels were observed between early and late thinning operations, as well as between examined pine, beech, spruce and fir stands. The strongest correlation between the EST and the analyzed variables was observed in the case of factors related to the volume of extracted timber.

Opis:
This study presents results of measurements carried out in 2001 in five two−generation mature fir−beech stands growing on the upland forest site in the Krasiczyn Forest Division (Krosno Regional Direction of State Forests − RDSF). The collected experimental material was subjected to analysis in individual stand strata from the point of view of the evaluation of the condition and growth and regeneration potentials of the common fir as an important admixture species in stands of the fertile Carpathian beech complex.

Opis:
The purpose of research was to analyse the efficiency of skidding and forwarding as well as relationships between these stages in beech stand. The large−sized wood was dragged by LKT 120 skidder, while middle−sized wood was loaded on trailer with tractor URSUS C330. The regression equations for determination of skidding cycle time and daily skidding efficiency were worked out. Average skidding efficiency amounted 21,99 m3/8 lh (labour hours) for large−sized and 15,68 m3/8 lh for middle−sized wood.

Opis:
Number of carabid beetles, length of C. violaceus elytra and MIB of all carabids were studied subsequent to pitfall−trapping in 14 beech stands of increasing age (1−165 years) in Western Germany. The beech stands seemed to offer fairly constant feeding conditions for C. violaceus (and relatively small decrease in rather low level of degradation in the plantation). In total, 5,536 carabid individuals were trapped, which revealed significant increase of MIB (from 156.88 to 733.63 mg) following the logistic growth function. Due to incomplete degradation of the stands (on 'rich' soil and after using specific beech−harvesting techniques), there is a high baseline MIB at t=0 and an early onset of regenerative succession. The curve's gradient is steep and MIB reaches final value of about 650 mg in timber stands. Such high value may be explained by the good quality of loam soils in the area under study. In conclusion, logistic MIB function was calculated that describes regenerative beech succession on 'rich' soil and may help foresters to identify areas of disturbed succession.

Opis:
Phytosociological relevés from a natural acidophilous oak forest Calamagrostio−Quercetum, as well as Scots pine, Douglas fir and beech plantations located in the same habitat were analysed. Our investigations did not confirm the negative effect of Scots pine on biodiversity. We observed a decline of species number with the decrease of light availability. The undergrowth biodiversity in the oak forest was reduced by the presence of beech the most. The observed quantitative and qualitative differences among the compared forests resulted from the combined effects of light availability, the character of plant litter, agrotechnical works, as well as dispersal abilities of plant species.

Opis:
The paper presents the analysis of changes in two beech forest communities in the Kołowskie Parowy nature reserve (NW Poland). Within 21 years the frequency and cover of most species significantly decreased, including typical taxa for shady deciduous forests. Analysis of ecological indicator values showed that species richness is strongly correlated with light availability. The results suggest that passive protection promoted in Puszcza Bukowa forest brings negative effects for vascular plants biodiversity.
