In the article, a brief review is presented of the definition of meteorological and agricultural droughts, drought indices and the operational systems of monitoring droughts in Poland. Drought is a widespread and frequent disaster which occurs more often within humid climate zones. Meteorological drought is the result of deficiencies in precipitation. Agricultural drought is an effect of various characteristics of meteorological and hydrological drought in agriculture comprising the reduction of evapotranspiration, soil water deficits, and reduced crop yield. Drought indicators are the common measures for drought assessment. The paper contains an inventory of drought measures (indicators) that are applied to evaluate meteorological and agricultural drought in Poland. For meteorological drought monitoring and the assessment of its intensity, four different indices have been used in Poland: relative precipitation index (RPI), effective drought index (EDI), standardised precipitation index (SPI) and climatic water balance (CWB). Agricultural drought is monitored by soil moisture index (SMI), agricultural drought index (CDI) and the potential reduction of final yield (yield reduction ratio YR). The working drought monitoring systems give information for the whole country or for a specific region but they are directed to some specific drought analyses. Four different drought monitoring systems have been under operation in Poland since 2005. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) conducts the system called “POSUCH@”. The Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation conducts the agricultural drought monitoring system. The Institute of Technology and Life Sciences (ITP) has developed two systems: the regional drought monitoring system in the Kujawy region and the nationwide system of monitoring and forecasting water deficit and surplus in agriculture.

The main aim of the study was to assess drought risk in the Kopel river basin on the basis of analysis of observations made in the period from 1972 to 2011. The Kopel river is a right tributary of the Warta river which it joins at 254+600 km. The drought risk was assessed on the basis of meteorological and hydrological diurnal data. The trend analysis revealed that temperature has a significant increasing tendency. On the basis of SNQ and Q70% flows the indices such as drought duration and drought volume were computed. Statistical analysis showed negative correlations between drought indices and precipitation. The results presented in this study indicated that drought risk in the Kopel river basin is high.

The drought ranked first in terms the natural hazard characteristics and impacts followed by tropical cyclones, regional floods, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Drought monitoring is an important aspect of drought risk management and the assessment of drought is usually done through using various drought indices. The western region in Algeria is the most affected by the drought since the middle of the 70s.The current research focuses on the analysis and comparison of four meteorological drought indices (standardized precipitation index – SPI, percent of normal index – PN, decile index – DI, and rainfall anomaly index – RAI) in the Tafna basin for different time scales (annual, seasonal, and monthly) during 1979–2011. The results showed that the SPI and DI have similar frequencies for dry and wet categories. The RAI and PN were able to detect more drought categories. Meanwhile, all indices have strong positive correlations between each other, especially with Spearman correlation tests (0.99; 1.0), the meteorological drought indices almost showed consistent and similar results in the study area. It was determined in 1982 as the driest year and 2008 as the wettest year in the period of the study. The analysis of the trend was based on the test of Mann–Kendall (MK), a positive trend of the indices were detected on a monthly scale, this increasing of indices trend represent the increasing of the wet categories which explains the increasing trend of the rainfall in the last 2000s. These results overview of the understanding of drought trends in the region is crucial for making strategies and assist in decision making for water resources management and reducing vulnerability to drought.

This paper addresses the problem of how drought definition by POT and SPA methods influences drought characteristics. Using the 1984- 2013 daily flows at 24 selected gauging stations in the Dunajec river basin and assuming two threshold levels Q70% and Q95% and four minimum drought durations (5, 7, 10 and 14 days) as the pre-set criteria, it was shown that, when compared to the POT method, the application of the SPA method usually leads to less number of droughts and, consequently, of longer duration. The SPA method, differently from POT, reduces dramatically the number of inter-event times, which suggests that some adjacent POT droughts may be dependent and should be pooled.

The research was carried out to determine the effect of different irrigation water requirements of different irrigation levels (mm), on the evapotranspiration seed yield (kg da-1) with vegetative and generative properties of two cotton types (drought tolerant, BA 525) and (drought susceptible, Lydia), in the Eastern Mediterranean region (Turkey). Drought or water deficit stress elicits many different phenological responses in plants. The study of vegetative features included the fresh and dry weight of plant (g), leaf area (cm2 ), number of leaves (number plant-1), number of fruit branches (number plant-1), number of bud formation (number plant-1) and number of node (number plant-1).This result indicates that water stress in plants limit the phenological development significantly and the average of all measurements made after flowering has been observed to decrease.

The research was conducted in Tartous Governorate during the two agricultural seasons (2018-2019 and 2019-2020) under control conditions, the aim of the research is to study the relationship between the productivity of five promising strains of bread wheat (‘ACSAD 1256’, ‘Douma 58847’, ‘Douma 58585’, ‘Douma 64453’, ‘ACSAD 1149’) and two cultivars (‘Douma 2’ and ‘Douma 4’) and some quantitative indicators of drought: stress tolerance index (STI), mean of productivity (MP), modified stress tolerance index (MSTI), and relative yield (RY). Cultivation was carried out in pots filled with light sandy silty soil, and three treatments of 70, 50, and 30% of the field capacity were applied in addition to the control and with three replications for each treatment. The strains ‘Douma 58585’ and ‘Douma 58847’ gave high yield values for grain in the two agricultural seasons. It was also found that there were significant differences between the two seasons in yield between the control and drought stress factors and drought tolerance indicators, such as stress tolerance index, modified stress tolerance index (MSTI), mean of productivity (MP), and relative yield (RY). On the other hand, a positive and strong relationship was found between STI, MSTI, and MP in both treatments and both seasons. The research concluded that the best indicators, which were related to the productivity, whether in the control or transactions and in the two growing seasons together, are STI and MP, which are promising indicators in the classification of stress-tolerant cultivars or strains.

Drought is one of the important phenomena resulting from variability and climate change. It has negative effects on all economic, agricultural and social sectors. The objective of this study is to rapidly detect climate dryness situations on an annual scale at the Mellah catchment (Northeast Algeria) for periods ranging from 31 years through the calculation of: the standardized precipitation index (SPI), the standardized Streamflow index (SSFI), the standardized temperature index (STI). Calculations made it possible to locate periods of drought more precisely by their intensity, duration and frequency, and detect years of breaks using the tests of Pettitt, rang, Lee and Heghinian, Hubert and Buishand. The use of the statistical tests for the rainfall series analyzed show all breaks, the majority of which are in 1996/1997 and 2001/2002. For the temperatures the breaks are situated in 1980/1981.
Susza jest jednym z ważnych zjawisk wywoływanych zmianami klimatu. Wywiera ujemny wpływ na gospodarkę, rolnictwo i społeczeństwo. Celem przedstawionych badań było śledzenie sytuacji suszy klimatycznej w skali roku w zlewni Mellah (północnowschodnia Algieria) w ciągu 31 lat przez obliczenia: standaryzowanego wskaźnika opadu (SPI), standaryzowanego wskaźnika przepływu (SSFI) i standaryzowanego wskaźnika temperatury (STI). Obliczenia z zastosowaniem testów Petitta, rang, Lee i Heghiniana oraz Huberta i Buishanda umożliwiły dokładniejsze ustalenie okresów suszy przez analizę intensywności, czasu trwania i częstotliwości, umożliwiły też wykrycie lat przerw w ciągach suszy. Dzięki testom statystycznym dla serii analizowanych opadów wykazano okresy przerw, głównie w latach 1996/1997 i 2001/2002. Dane temperaturowe wskazywały na okresy przerw w latach 1980/1981.

The paper presents impact of meteorological drought on hydrological drought on the Vistula River in Toruń in the period of 1971–2015. It uses index method for the assessment of hydrological drought threat degree as a result of multi-month lasting meteorological drought. Based on the values of the SPI-24 (24-month standardized precipitation index) it was determined that meteorological drought in Toruń appeared six times and the total time of the phenomenon was 33% of the studied interval. Periods of hydrological drought on the Vistula River in Toruń have been determined based on the values of the SWI-24 (24-month standardized water level index). It has been found out that hydrological drought appeared four times and its total time was 10% longer that the meteorological drought. Based on the values of both indices (SPI-24 and SWI-24) correlation coefficient for months, seasons and years, it was found that the relation between both kind of droughts is weak (r < 0.5). That result is also confirmed in the distribution of both kinds of drought. Only in 32 months (8% of the total time) the intensity of the two simultaneously occurring drought was at least moderate. The achieved results revealed that the hydrological drought was occurring periodically, independent on meteorological drought. Hydrological drought was also influenced by the external factors (hydropower plant in Włocławek, Major Groundwater Basin – GZWP) and climate factors appearing in the upper and middle part of the river basin.
W artykule przedstawiono wpływ suszy meteorologicznej na suszę hydrologiczną na Wiśle w Toruniu w latach 1971–2015. W tym celu wykorzystano metodę wskaźnikową do oceny stopnia zagrożenia suszą hydrologiczną w wyniku wystąpienia wielomiesięcznej suszy meteorologicznej. Na podstawie wartości wskaźnika SPI-24 (ang. standardized precipitation index) dla 24-miesięcznego okresu stwierdzono, że susza meteorologiczna w Toruniu wystąpiła sześć razy, a łączny czas trwania zjawiska wynosił 33% badanego wielolecia. Okresy suszy hydrologicznej dla Wisły w Toruniu wyznaczono na podstawie wartości wskaźnika SWI-24 (ang. standardized water level index) dla 24-miesięcznego okresu. Stwierdzono, że susza hydrologiczna pojawiła się cztery razy, a jej łączny czas trwania był dłuższy o 10% od suszy meteorologicznej. Bazując na wartościach współczynnika korelacji między wartościami obu wskaźników (SPI-24 i SWI-24) w miesiącach, sezonach i latach stwierdzono słabą zależność między obiema suszami (r < 0,5). Wynik ten ma potwierdzenie także w rozkładzie obu susz. Tylko w 32 miesiącach (8% badanego wielolecia) intensywność obu jednocześnie występujących susz była co najmniej umiarkowana. Uzyskane wyniki świadczą, że susza hydrologiczna występowała okresowo niezależnie od suszy meteorologicznej. Na przebieg suszy hydrologicznej miały również wpływ lokalne czynniki zewnętrzne (elektrownia wodna we Włocławku, zbiornik wód podziemnych GZWP) oraz czynniki klimatyczne występujące w górnej i środkowej części dorzecza Wisły.

The investigation of extreme meteorological drought events is crucial for disaster preparedness and regional water management. In this study, trends in extreme drought events, namely annual maximum drought severity (AMDS) and annual maximum drought duration (AMDD), were examined for the Ceyhan Basin. The analyses of extreme events were conducted using the standard precipitation index (SPI) index for multiple-time scales of 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months for 23 meteorological stations located in the Ceyhan Basin, Turkey. The Wallis-Moore and Wald-Wolfowitz methods were employed to determine the homogeneity of the data sets, whereas trend analyses were conducted using Mann-Kendall and Spearman Rho tests. The magnitude of trends was defined by Sen’s slope and linear regression, and change points were detected using the standard normal homogeneity test, Buishand’s range test, and Pettitt’s test. Although increasing trends were detected in most of the stations, only in nine of them, statistically significant results were noted at a significance level of 95%. The results of this paper provide valuable information to water resource management decision-makers in the Ceyhan River Basin for evaluating the effect of droughts and preparing for drought mitigation measures to avoid future drought risks.

The goal of this work consists in quantitative analysis of the occurrence of droughts and their occurrence probability estimated for a small agricultural catchment on the basis of a multi-annual series of daily streamflows in the Zagożdżonka river at the Płachty Stare gauging station, in the context of observed changes in the stream regime during the multi-annual period 1963-2010. The Zagożdżonka river catchment is one of a few in Poland, with long-term records on rainfall and runoff. To identify streamflow droughts in daily discharge hydrograms, truncation level Q90% (discharge determined from the flow duration curve) was used. Minimum duration of drought amounting to 10 days, was the additional criterion for identification of droughts. The Nizowka2003 model was used for finding distributions of the probability of deficit volume and duration of maximum summer droughts for the Zagożdżonka river. The droughts in the small agricultural catchment under study concern only summer half-years and most often they are of short duration – up to 20 days. Longer droughts, lasting lightly over 2 months, can be expected – once per 10 years. The occurrence of a summer drought lasting almost all the season in the Zagożdżonka river is probable once per 100 years. A weak correlation between the minimum drought discharge and their duration was found.
Celem pracy jest ilościowa analiza występowania zjawiska niżówki i prawdopodobieństwa jej występowania w małej zlewni rolniczej, na podstawie długoletniej serii obserwacji przepływów dobowych rzeki Zagożdżonki w profilu Płachty Stare, w kontekście śledzenia zmian w reżimie rzeki w wieloleciu 1963-2010. Zlewnia rzeki Zagożdżonki jest jedna z kilku w Polsce, która posiada długi ciąg pomiarów wartości opadów i odpływu. Na potrzeby wyznaczenia niżówek na hydrogramach dobowych przepływów użyto poziomu odcięcia Q90% (przepływ odczytany krzywej czasów trwania przepływów). Dodatkowym kryterium w wyodrębnieniu niżówek zastosowano minimalny czas trwania zjawiska wynoszący 10 dni. Do wyznaczenia rozkładów prawdopodobieństwa objętości deficytu i czasu trwania niżówek maksymalnych letnich dla rzeki Zagożdżonki użyto programu Nizowka2003. Niżówki w rozpatrywanej małej rolniczej zlewni dotyczą jedynie półrocza letniego i najczęściej trwają krótko do 20 dni. Raz na 10 lat można spodziewać się niżówek dłuższych, trwających niewiele ponad 2 miesiące. Raz na 100 lat jest prawdopodobne wystąpienie w rzece Zagożdżonce niżówki letniej trwającej prawie przez cały sezon. Pomiędzy minimalnym przepływem niżówek a ich czasem trwania uzyskano słabą zależność.

River basins in Lebanon recently have experienced increasing droughts, which has prompted this study to characterize drought temporally and spatially. The study describes and analyzes hydrologic and precipitation conditions in seven river basins, representing most flow directions in various climatic zones. The characteristics of hydrologic and rainfall drought were discussed and analyzed, depending on available data from five climatic zones and fourteen hydrometric stations distributed in the river, allowing for a detailed analysis of drought. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Streamflow Drought Index (SDI) were calculated at 6-month intervals (first and second 6-months) using the DRINC program. The hydrologic and rainfall drought characteristics maps generated in the GIS platform may help to identify the degree of drought in the study areas. The investigation was carried out by examining the strength of relationships between SDI and SPI using bivariate correlation analysis. The significance of the correlation coefficient is used in this study to decide whether linear relationships between the SPI and SDI occurred in the first and second six months. Calculating the correlation coefficient for these variables based on hydrologic and rainfall data reveals an inconsistent correlation over different periods.

A three decade-long study on the variability of drought in relation to the contribution of rainfall was conducted at the Wadi Mekerra watershed, located in northwest Algeria, covering the period from 1973 to 2005. The runoff and rainfall data were analyzed using the Mann-Kendall test, the double mass curve method and the SPI index. A rupture of the studied series appeared during the 1980s. The rainfall and runoff trends and contributions were in general, sharply reduced. The region experienced extreme drought between 1981 and1989, and between 1993 and 2001, rainfall contributions were greater than 60%. This increase, which was recorded in August, September and October for all the parameters studied, shows the importance of the superficial runoff component when combined with decreased infiltration. These climatic conditions reduce the natural recharging of groundwater, and cause an increased susceptibility to soil erosion, reduced agricultural production and an increased risk of floods.

W pracy przedstawiono ocenę intensywności i częstotliwości występowania suszy meteorologicznej w okresie wegetacyjnym (IV-IX) w latach 1965-1998 na Polesiu Lubelskim metodą ciągów dni bezopadowych oraz za pomocą: wskaźnika względnego opadu RPI, rozkładu prawdopodobieństwa nieprzekroczenia opadów p, wskaźnika standaryzowanego opadu SPI i wskaźnika standaryzowanego klimatycznego bilansu wodnego KBWs. Podstawę oceny stanowiły wyniki obserwacji i pomiarów prowadzonych w stacji meteorologicznej w Sosnowicy, położonej w centralnej części Polesia Lubelskiego. Wykorzystując metodę ciągów dni bezopadowych Koźmińskiego, wyróżniono okresy susz trwające 11-15, 16-20 oraz >20 dni. Częstotliwość występowania suszy meteorologicznej, określona metodą ciągów dni bezopadowych, wynosi 23%, za pomocą wskaźnika RPI - 33%, rozkładu prawdopodobieństwa p - 32%, wskaźnika SPI - 28% oraz wskaźnika KBWs - 32%. Zróżnicowanie to dowodzi przyjmowania zbyt małej wartości opadu (1,5-2,0 mm) jako przerywającej oraz skracającej ciąg dni bezopadowych. Wskazuje ono również na odmienny wpływ kompleksowego układu czynników meteorologicznych (wyrażonego wartością wskaźnika KBWs) i zmienności opadów (wyrażonej wartością wskaźnika SPI) na klasyfikację intensywności i częstotliwości występowania suszy.
Meteorological drought frequency and intensity in growing seasons (IV-IX) of the years 1965-1998 were evaluated by 5 different methods: the sequences of days without precipitation (dry periods), the relative precipitation index RPI, the standardised precipitation index SPI, the probability distribution of precipitation p and the standardised climatic water balance KBWs. Meteorological data from the weather station at Sosnowica (central part of Lublin Polesie) was used for the assessment. Dry periods lasting 11-15 days, 16-20 days and above 20 days were distinguished, using Koźmiński's method of dry periods. Meteorological drought frequency is 23% according to the dry periods method, 33% according to the RPI, 28% according to the SPI, 32% according to the probability p and 32% according to the KBWs method. The above differences show that minimum rainfall able to break a dry period is higher than the currently adopted value of 1.5-2.0 mm. Moreover, the comparison of KBWs and the SPI proves that the drought index derived from the complex of meteorological variables is different from the drought index based only on precipitation.

Drought is a significant factor limiting crop production in arid regions while hawthorns (Crataegus sp.) are an important component of such region’s forests. Therefore, treatments that increase hawthorn drought resistance may also increase transplanting success. Thus, the physiological and biochemical responses of hawthorn seedlings to a factorial combination of different concentrations of silica nanoparticles (SNPs at 0, 10, 50 and 100 mg L-1) and three soil moisture treatments (without stress, moderate stress and severe stress) were investigated. Seedlings were irrigated with one of the four concentrations of SNPs for 45 days before exposing them to drought stress. Photosynthesis parameters, malondialdehyde (MDA), relative water content (RWC ), membrane electrolyte leakage (ELI) as well as chlorophyll, carotenoid, carbohydrate and proline content were determined. At the end of the experiment, positive effects by SNP pre-treatment on physiological indexes were observed during drought stress. Under drought conditions, the effect of SNPs on photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance was evident. Although the SNPs increased plant biomass, xylem water potential and MDA content, especially under drought conditions, RWC and ELI were not affected by the SNP pre-treatments. Seedlings pre-treated with SNPs had a decreased carbohydrate and proline content under all water regimes, but especially so under drought. Total chlorophyll content and carotenoid content did not change among the treatments. Generally, the findings imply that SNPs play a positive role in maintaining critical physiological and biochemical functions in hawthorn seedlings under drought stress conditions. However, more studies are needed before the physiological and biochemical basis of induced drought resistance can be determined.

Drought is generally associated with the persistence of low precipitation amount, decreased soil moisture and water availability relative to the normal levels in a designated area. The effects of drought, range from the morphological to molecular levels, and are evident at all phenological stages of the plant growth, at whatever stage the water deficit occurs. Determination of the surface water demands for irrigation purposes comes out from the assumption of hydrologic processes stationarity. This paper shows our research prerequisite that water stress participates in an important part on the volume changes of over ground parts, which is predictive for the irrigation demand. Malus domestica var. Yellow Transparent was chosen for the measurement of volume changes of the surface plant parts. Our measurements were realised by the Diameter dendrometer small (DD-S) from 24.08. to 13.09.2017. One tree was irrigated by the dose of 50 mm. We compared the dendrometric changes to soil moisture and rainfall on both irrigated and non-irrigated trees. The experiment showed the differences between the irrigated apple tree (the diameters of the branches fluctuated between 11.9 and 12.1 mm) and the non-irrigated apple tree (the diameter of the branches increased after three-day rain from 8.35 to 8.61 mm), in order to determine the water stress of plants based on dendrometric changes and optimize irrigation during the drought period.
