Opis:: The paper describes systems responsible for driving safety of vehicles weighing up to 3.5 t. It is focused on selected failures (fouling) of braking systems that are typical during motor cars operation. Simulation testing regarding effect of selected failures (fouling) of braking system elements on braking force and braking efficiency were performed. In order to perform such testing, author of the paper worked out the methodology of testing which is also described here. The test results (partial) are displayed as tables and charts. The negative effect of selected failures on braking force and braking efficiency index is influencing directly on motor cars driving safety. It is also emphasized that it is important to maintain and observe automotive manufacturers’ technical requirements regarding braking system elements such as tyre pressure, tyre tread condition, brake shoes wear, etc. Basing on the test results it is found that excessive wear of tyres and brake shoes wear could be the reason of significant WSH index decrease resulting in faulty car. This can be visible through lower than allowable level of braking efficiency index WSH, which is the basic legal diagnostic parameter of break system condition assessment. Replacing such elements significantly improves braking efficiency index WSH.

Opis:: In this paper, selected elements of the theory of the car's motion were presented. It was emphasised that it is extremely important to know the rules of behaviour of a car in curvilinear motion, an example of which is a curve, especially when driving in adverse weather conditions resulting in the significant reduction of the car's traction to the surface. The active electronic stability programme (ESP) of the car's trajectory, its principle of operation and benefits of use were briefly discussed. The next part was to present the basics of the mechanics of a vehicle's motion, especially the forces acting on a car during its stop phase, the forces acting on the curve of the road. On this basis, the basic equilibrium equations were presented, which in turn led to defining the correlation for determining the so-called safe speed of driving in circular motion, which also guarantees the impossibility of the cars skidding. In the further part, the calculations, in accordance with the BMW 320d car's data were made. Hypothetically, it was assumed that this car might have only a front-wheel drive, only a rear-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive. The idea was to check to what extent the type of drive has an impact on the achieved value of the safe speed of driving in the circular motion with a minimum turning radius for this vehicle. The article was completed with short conclusions, in which the importance of the electronic stability programme (ESP) of the car's trajectory was emphasised.

The driving techniques improvement because of economic, environmental and operating benefits of vehicle referred to as eco-driving, is a solution having a large application potential in different conditions of vehicle use. The article brought closer the idea of eco-driving and presented an extensive review of the literature regarding this subject. Driver assistance systems available as vehicle equipment in the field of driving economics were also presented. The article is an introduction to the issues of ecodriving and capabilities resulting from its application supported by literature reports from around the country and the world carried out by various research centers and experienced authors.

Opis:: This paper presents a method of wireless measurement of pressure and temperature of air in a car wheel with Tire Pressure Monitoring System - one of the modern safety systems used in the automotive industry. The readings were performed on a specially designed test bench. It was described a construction and operating principle of key elements of this test bench allowing work with sensors, TPMS module, reference instruments, and the format of data and correctness of data transmission between TPMS and host computer. The created software for embedded system emulating real on-board computer let to observe the uncorrected sensor readings and the effect of calibration in two points of characteristic.

Opis:: W artykule omówiono dynamikę wzrostu ruchu kołowego na drogach Polski w latach 1995-2010, wzrost liczby samochodów oraz statystyki dotyczące sieci dróg. Dane te zestawiono z liczbą wypadków drogowych, która od trzech lat plasuje Polskę na pierwszym miejscu wśród krajów Unii Europejskiej. Bezpieczeństwo na drogach jest niewątpliwie uzależnione od natężenia ruchu kołowego i zachowań kierowców. Jednak najpoważniejszą przyczyną wypadków w Polsce, jak dowodzi kontrola NIK, jest zły stan infrastruktury drogowej, zwłaszcza nawierzchni jezdni, a także błędy w szkoleniu kierowców i nieprawidłowości w organizacji ruchu. Wyniki kontroli wskazują, iż Polska może mieć problem z wywiązaniem się ze zobowiązań podjętych wraz z sygnowaniem w 2010 roku IV Europejskiego Programu Działań na rzecz Bezpieczeństwa Ruchu Drogowego Unii Europejskiej, który zakłada zmniejszenie o połowę liczby ofiar śmiertelnych w wypadkach drogowych w ciągu najbliższej dekady.
The paper discusses the dynamics of the increase of vehicular traffic on Polish roads over the years 1995-2010, the increase in the number of cars and the statistics of road network. The data are confronted with the number of road accidents which has situated Poland in the first place in EU for the last three years. Road safety depends undoubtedly on the intensity of vehicular traffic and driver' behavior. But the most important causes of road accidents, confirmed by the report of NIK (Supreme Audit Office), are: bad condition of road infrastructure, mainly road surface, mistakes in training future drivers, improper organization of road traffic. The control outcomes indicate that Poland may have problems with fulfilling the obligations undertaken together with signing in 2010 the Fourth European Action Programme for Road Safety European Union which assumes halving the number of fatalities in road accidents over the next decade.

Opis:: Selected experimental research results of truck tire in steady-state side cornering and transient cornering conditions are presented in this paper. Experimental research results of the tire have been used in simulation research of medium duty truck in nonlinear driving conditions. The paper presents the structure of the vehicle dynamics model and a description of applied tire-road interaction model. Simulation research of the vehicle lateral dynamics has been performed in two variants: without and with the model of tire relaxation. During research, the tire relaxation length has been also changed. The steering wheel angle changes were forced as continuous sinusoidal excitation signal with a constant amplitude and with continuously increasing frequency. There have been analysed basic physical quantities characterizing the vehicle lateral dynamics connected with the vehicle active safety, especially including body yaw velocity and lateral acceleration in the centre of the truck body mass. An analysis of research results have been performed in the time and frequency domain. Time courses of analysed physical quantities and their frequency spectrum, obtained for tire-road interaction model without and with the tire relaxation (with different values of relaxation length) have been compared. Based on the simulation research results there have been considered the influence of tire relaxation on the vehicle performance. There have been shown that the tire relaxation can significantly change courses of observed physical quantities connected with vehicle lateral dynamics connected with vehicle driving safety.

The article discusses issues related to structural solutions of active suspensions of road wheels used in vehicles. There is presented the general idea of using active suspensions. Discussed issues are based on the examples of design solutions for various types of active suspensions. It underlines the relevant characteristics of specific solutions. Attention was drawn to a compromise between the requirements of comfort, safety and driving.

Opis:: The paper presents an experimental stand for testing the front car camera S-CAM with embedded image recognition systems. The camera sends CAN messages these are converted to USART messages by microprocessor based system. The messages are interpreted by MATLAB script on the basis of database of traffic signs in accordance with Polish Road Code. The testing stand is mainly aimed for educating students interested in the fields of electronics and technologies related to automotive branch, as well. The second objective is a research on efficiency of traffic sign recognition system being one of functionalities of S-CAM camera. The technical specification of testing stand, its functionality and limitations were also discussed. The bench operation was illustrated with examples of stiff images, animation and real movies.

Opis:: Vibration properties of road vehicles can be in principles evaluated using two ways, i. e. by simulation computations using a virtual model of a vehicle and by measuring on a real vehicle prototype, whereby, their dynamical properties are usually assessed in compliance with to two criterions, namely from the ride comfort for passengers point of view and from the driving safety point of view. The topic of this article is focused on evaluation of passenger’s ride comfort of a tricycle. In this regard, vertical movements of a vehicle are most important. In respect of ride comfort for passengers, accelerations in vertical direction are critical. Accelerations are usually detected on a seat. In regard of driving safety, value of the contact force between a wheel and a road are decisive. In our research we present process of investigation of level of ride comfort for passengers and level of driving safety of a tricycle based on simulation computations using the tricycle multibody model.

The article presents the standardization condition of wheelsets that belong to the busiest part in the railway. The significance of q_R parameter is discussed taking into account its impact as the safety of riding, necessity of repairs and maintenance. The permissible limited dimensions of the parameter due to the operational safety are presented. They are defined in UIC leaflets, the European standard and the TSI regulations.

Opis:: This article is a summary of analytical considerations from previous works on the qualification of springs in 1XTa bogies for use in four-axle wagons. The article presents the calculation of an example test drive of wagon in quasi-static conditions through an arc of radius R = 150 m. The results of calculations of the derailment coefficient for rail tankers equipped with four groups of springs of various rigidity were presented along with the conclusions derived from analytical calculations.
Artykuł jest podsumowaniem rozważań analitycznych w poprzednich pracach dotyczących kwalifikacji resorów w wózkach 1XTa, przeznaczonych do wagonów czteroosiowych. W artykule przedstawiono obliczenia przejazdu przykładowego wagonu cysterny w warunkach quasi-statycznych przez łuk o promieniu R=150 m. Przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń wskaźnika wykolejenia dla wagonów cystern wyposażonych w cztery grupy resorów o różnych sztywnościach oraz wnioski z obliczeń analitycznych.

The security of the transport service is one of the key elements of the business. This article presents the results of surveys conducted among professional drivers. The questionnaires concerned the assessment of the effectiveness and appropriateness of the driver-assisted driving systems that primarily affect driving comfort, but indirectly also affect the safety of drivers. The tested systems were cruise control system and adaptive cruise control.
