Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze cognitive distraction data to determine its impact of transit bus drivers' capability. Much of the theory and results applied in this paper are from the work of researchers working on similar projects. In order to understand cognitive distraction and how it can be mitigated, a Cognitive Distraction Model is outlined. The model was analyzed to evaluate the correlation between driver capability, and demographics and driving patterns. A model that provides an understanding about cognitive workload and driver capability could provide better psychological solutions to mitigate the number of accidents due to cognitive distraction and develop relevant driver training programs. Through additional research from the neurological and behavioral sciences, regulators could develop a better understanding of the causal factors and ways to control cognitive distraction.

Opis:
The lack of attention during the driving task is considered as a major risk factor for fatal road accidents around the world. Despite the ever-growing trend for autonomous driving which promises to bring greater road-safety benefits, the fact is today’s vehicles still only feature partial and conditional automation, demanding frequent driver action. Moreover, the monotony of such a scenario may induce fatigue or distraction, reducing driver awareness and impairing the regain of the vehicle’s control. To address this challenge, we introduce a non-intrusive system to monitor the driver in terms of fatigue, distraction, and activity. The proposed system explores state-of-the-art sensors, as well as machine learning algorithms for data extraction and modeling. In the domain of fatigue supervision, we propose a feature set that considers the vehicle’s automation level. In terms of distraction assessment, the contributions concern (i) a holistic system that covers the full range of driver distraction types and (ii) a monitoring unit that predicts the driver activity causing the faulty behavior. By comparing the performance of Support Vector Machines against Decision Trees, conducted experiments indicated that our system can predict the driver’s state with an accuracy ranging from 89% to 93%.

Opis:
Analysis of accidents has found driver distraction to be a significant cause of accidents on the highways [1]. Therefore, studying the causes of driver distraction that impact its risk level is needed for a better understanding of accident occurrences. There is general scarcity of research in this field with no established research framework to study driver distractions. This paper proposes a modular research framework for conducting a driver distraction study on Polish city highways. The framework contains guidelines for distraction studies for wide range of cost and time intervals such as a quick, low cost study like analysis of existing accident databases maintained by the cities to relatively higher cost, longer duration study involving field data collection, statistical modeling, and analysis. A city may choose one or more modules to suit their study requirements including statistical and simulation tools to assess and validate the historical or empirical result. The framework is based on the careful modifications and revisions of an earlier transit bus driver study conducted in the Commonwealth of Virginia, U.S.A., and results from this research are presented for purposes of illustration.

Opis:
A central concern of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is the effect of in-vehicle devices (e.g., cell phones, navigation systems, radios, etc.) on driver performance and safety. As diverse and innovative technologies are designed and implemented for in-vehicle use, questions regarding the presence and use of these devices assume progressively greater importance. Further concerns for advanced driver training require us to develop and validate reliable and effective procedures for assessing such effects. This work examines a number of candidate procedures, in particular the evaluation of change in cognitive workload as a strategy by which such goals might be achieved.

Opis:
Wnioski z analiz pozwalają rekomendować ograniczenie obecności w otoczeniu drogi elementów, takich jak reklamy i inne obiekty mogące powodować rozproszenie użytkowników o osłabionej sprawności procesów uwagi.
The article presents the results of analyzes carried out based on the results of psychological tests for professional drivers, taking into account indicators of susceptibility to distraction and their dependence on age. It has been shown that with age the speed of information processing decreases, there are also more wrong decisions made, and anomalies in recognizing objects. The strongest decrease in performance was observed in the test requiring the assessment of the speed and ability to anticipate the movement of objects. Generally, with increasing complexity of the tasks the effect of age on the markers of inattention (distracting the attention) in the driving situations, was greater. The conclusions of the analyses allow to recommend limiting the presence in the road vicinity of such elements as advertisements and other objects that may cause attention distraction of the road users with the weakened attention processes.
