Opis:
The article presents some aspects connected with organisation of preservation of historical monuments in Roumania. The preservation work is strictly separated from museum work. The highest and also the only preserving authority, called under the new post-war act of 1960, is the Direction of Historical Monuments; whereas museum work is subordinate to the Ministry of Culture and Art. Activities, such as studying and designing of preservation work as well as survey and supervision, are concentrated in the Direction of Historical Monuments. Moreover The Commitee for Culture and The Building Commitee of each district are concerned with the problems of historical monuments. Quite a boom may be observed now in the way of restoration, because of recent including of those problems into the sphere of touristics development programme. Hence most objects being restored at the moment lie in Bukovina, in Central Transylvania, in Bucureçti and its proximity, as well as in Dobruja. The preservation of historical monuments enjoys in Roumania the status of cultural, national, almost patriotic action, although it finally yields a return. „Green light for preservation problems” and the state is consequently financing that undertaking. Some methods and final effects of preservating certain buildings may be objectionable, but the grand style in which the works are conducted rends one absolutely jealous. The reconstruction of the old dwellingshopping center in Bucureçti sets a good example, as well as the building of Vlach Skansen in Curtiçoara, Oltenia.

Opis:
This article was prepared as a result of field surveys carried out in the years 1970—1971 as a part of work on documentation of the wood sacred buildings which is conducted by the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences and is supplemented by data taken from the “Catalogue of Monuments of Art in Poland” which were collected in 1954—1955. The author points to the deplorable state of preservation of the orthodox churches in territories of the Lublin and Rzeszów Voivodships. These objects, already considerably damaged by natural wear and entirely deprived of protection are very fastly turning into ruins. It may be expected that within a relatively short period of time, unless suitable measures will be taken, it will come to a total disappearing of objects belonging to this category of wood-constructed buildings. The data characterizing the number of orthodox churches in the first post-war years, when confronted with those pertaining to the actual state are best illustrating this disastrous situation. As an excellent annex to the article may be regarded the attached “Description of the wood-constructed orthodox churches and belfries that are endangered or have been demolished in Tomaszów Lubelski District”. In his attempt to find an answer to the question what should be done to stop the disappearance of the wood-constructed sacred buildings in this country the author puts forward a proposal that the most representative objects should be transferred to open-air museums of wood building. In addition, he is of opinion that the problem deserves to be popularized among both local authorities and communities. One form of their protection and preservation could consist in their adaptation to modern requirements or their overhanding to administration of the Roman Catholic Church, of schools etc. For objects whose preserving has already become impossible should be prepared a full documentation in form of inventorying surveys, drawings and photographs, thus allowing to obtain the only means forming an evidence of their existence. Such measures, however, are to be considered as the last extremity. It must be borne in mind that every historical monument being a specimen of cultural property and a witness of the past periods of the Polish culture should be preserved at any cost for the forthcoming generations.

Stara Skwarzawa
Ukraina
Opis:
The article presents the circumstances of finding the oldest wooden tserkva in Ukraine, in the village Stara Skvaryava near Zhovkva. The finding was made on the occasion of creating documentation of the renovation of that disused church. The oldest references to the village Skvaryava come from 1515, and to the church itself – from 1578. The subsequent broader information regarding the church appeared in the 18th century protocols of parish visitation. The protocols contain also information about moving the church from Glinsk to Stara Skvaryava in 1715. That building is identified as a wooden single domed eastern type church from the 16th century on the basis of an analysis of sources. Along with the church, an iconostasis with icons from various periods was moved to Stara Skvaryava. Its oldest part was probably made by the masters from Przemyśl in the 16th century, and the other parts in the 17th and 19th century. The protocol of a Dean’s visitation of 1792 informs that the church was restored at the end of the 18th century. From 1947 to 1989 the church was closed. Opened in the early 1990s, it was used until completion of construction of a new brick church in 1995. The monument, abandoned since then, needed an urgent renovation. According to some sources, the currently existing wooden church was built in 1820. However, the earlier origin of the church can be confirmed by the window openings typical of the beginning of the 18th century. The discovery in 2008 of the inscriptions on the wall of the nave: „АФИ” and „ѿ АѰ Сей цркви С лѣтъ без осми”, allows unambiguously to date the church at 1508 and confirms the information of its moving from Glińsk. The celebrations of the quincentenary of the church on Michaelmas in 2008 became a true feast for all inhabitants and unified them in the pursuit of preservation and restoration of the original look of the church. In spring 2009 renovation works began and were continued in the next years when financial resources were available. Taking into consideration a unique character of the church and its original equipment, as well as the fact that this is the oldest Ukrainian wooden eastern type church with a known date of construction, it is necessary to aim at listing it in the National Register of Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
