    The article presents another summary of film events in a year 2010. Films that can be found here are: Benek, directed by Robert Gliński, and concerning Silesian subject, Chrzest (The Christening) second film by young Polish director Marcin Wrona, Czarny czwartek (Black Thursday) which tells the story of the strikes in 1970, and Joanna by Feliks Falk that offers a new perspective on the Second World War. Besides these, some other descriptions of the films that were released in 2010 or in the beginning of 2011 can be found here: Matka Teresa od kotów (Mother Teresa of Cats), Młyn i krzyż (Mill and the Cross), Och, Karol 2, Różyczka (Little Rose), Sala samobójców (Suicide Room), Skrzydlate świnie (Winged Pigs) and Weekend.     Death and the Maiden by Roman Polański is an example of an experimental transposition of Ariel Dorman’s drama into the visual language of film. The merging of words and pictures in the film is compared to Bachtin’s dialogisation which permeates the element of the European novel. The meaning and motivation of the words in the characters’ dialogues influences the development of the action, form and rhythm of the takes as well as their juxtaposition with the characters and props.Polański does not limit himself only to a single-track effect. As dialogisation influences the forms of visualization, so images broaden the meanings of the dialogues, creating new contexts. The film is not only an attempt to prove that the alleged or real rapist was guilty, but also a study of the dishonoured woman’s fight for a right to live without traumatic reminiscences.

    As death returned to make its mark on the world with the COVID-19 pandemic and, consequently, resurfaced in the social imaginary, we have found ourselves once again full-throatedly asking questions about what it means to die well. These issues lie at the heart of W;t, an American play penned in the early 1990s by Margaret Edson, which could be situated alongside other fictional and true stories that “provide social scripts for dying” (Knox). The play might also be viewed as a modern reference to the medieval tradition of ars bene moriendi and the morality plays linked with that tradition in a symbiotic, synergistic manner. The essay attempts to demonstrate that the meaning underlying Edson’s play (and its television adaptation of 2001) derives primarily from its grappling with the subject of human’s agency in the face of the inevitable. In its close reading of the play, the essay moves between the text, first published in print in 1999, and the screen, to best tap into the interpretive potential of comparing the drama and its film adaptation.

    Maciej J. Drygas teaches film direction at Film School in Łódź. His lavishly illustrated recent work “Someone’s else letters” is one of the best Polish editing documentaries ever made. The product of extensive research provided by the author in many archives is sure to provoke much debate and discussion about lack of freedom, breaking law by the state secret institutions, crucial importance of human rights and misery of everyday life conditions in Poland 1944-1989. In so doing Drygas greatly enlarges our knowledge and the scope of any understanding of this period. Marek Hendrykowski’s study is the first complete presentation ever published, covering every aspect of this excellent film, expressing its significance and including detailed analysis of its poetics.

    This article focuses on the historical figure of the leader of the second uprising of the colonized Prussians against the Teutonic Order, Herkus Monte, who is presented here primarily as a literary figure. The increasing interest in Prussian history changed the written media, so that the order chronicle of the 13th century later turned into literary works, primarily historical novels and historical dramas in Germany. Because of the geographical proximity and linguistic relationship, the Lithuanians feel a strong affinity for the Prussians and their heroes. In the following, we analyze literary works by Lithuanian authors on the basis of which a feature film and an opera were created.

    The author aims to show that Sidney Lumet’s cinema classic 12 Angry Men (1957) is not only a film about persuasion (making art the subject of persuasion about something that presents the clash of various attitudes and views), but also a persuasive film (placing an emphasis on persuading the viewer for specific reasons). For the second of these perspectives, non-verbal persuasion is of fundamental importance – implicit, in its immanent essence, because it uses certain narrative techniques and remains in a purposeful relationship with the organisation of its aesthetics. The axis of this kind of organisation is determined by the categories of gravity and lightness, which seem to fundamentally define various aspects of the film, ranging from the weight of the issues discussed to the implications associated with the setting of the drama. Lumet’s work is a model example of a text that methodically engages audiences in an aesthetic-affective game with the help of gravity and lightness, but also gives the game a world-view sense: it shapes beliefs and assessments that weigh not only on viewers’ attitudes towards conflicts that determine the relationship in the film world, but also affect the perception of non-textual reality (not openly making viewers approve the American model of democracy).

    Artykuł opisuje specyfikę sceny robotniczej międzywojennej twórczości teatralnej Witolda Wandurskiego, którego propozycja reformy teatru polskiego wiązała się z projektem połączenia rozwiązań formalnych z reinterpretacją materiału historycznego. Celem rozważań jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób specyfika sceny robotniczej wpłynęła na kształt polskiego teatru awangardowego, zmianę warunków percepcji przedstawienia teatralnego pod wpływem nowych wynalazków technologicznych, których efektem było także zastąpienie dramatopisarza postacią dramaturga jako teatralnego symbolu przemian na polu sztuki nowoczesnej.
    The article describes a unique nature of the Workers’ Stage in the Inter-War period theatre activity of Witold Wandurski, whose proposal for reforming the Polish theatre involved combining formal solutions with a reinterpretation of historical material. The aim of this work is to answer the question how the unique nature of the Workers’ Stage shaped the Polish Avant-garde theatre, as well as how it altered the perception of a theatre performance as a result of introducing new technological inventions, the effect of which was the replacement of a dramatist with a playwright, who then became a theatrical symbol of transformations in modern art.

    The paper explores British heritage films produced over the last two decades of the 20th century in the context of profound cultural and social changes. The international success of heritage films sparked off lively debates about what the term „heritage” stands for. The first part of the paper provides a brief account of the fundamental issues and concepts of the British heritage cinema. The latter part traces the growth and development of the „quality” heritage film which in the l990s evolved into a marketable commodity that can be sold to international audiences.
    Filmy nurtu dziedzictwa kulturowego zrealizowane w ostatnich dekadach XX wieku spotkały się z żywym zainteresowaniem krytyki filmowej i literackiej. Pierwsza część artykułu przedstawia główne wątki refleksji filmoznawczej i literaturoznawczej na temat tego zjawiska w kontekście głębokich przemian społecznych i kulturowych na Wyspach Brytyjskich. W części drugiej omówione zostały kolejne fazy rozwojowe i proces międzynarodowej ekspansji tego nurtu. W późniejszej fazie, szczególnie w latach 90.tych, „brytyjskie” z nazwy filmy dziedzictwa kulturowego stały się ważnym segmentem międzynarodowego przemysłu filmowego.

    Marek Hendrykowski’s essay presents the importance of Janusz Morgenstern’s early short film Radishes made after Stalin’s death, in 1954 as a student work produced by Film School in Łódź. The main character, old worker Gruliński loses his clear hopes and human illusions. The pesimistic conclusion is closed further by the simultaneous description of the hero’s social image within a discourse of origins and the sacred which evacuates analysis of class conflict and sociological approach in the narrative of an “ordinary good man” brutally disturbed in his desires and works by the irruption and power of an omnipotent destructive stalinist “red tape” bureaucracy. The poetics of Radishes is deeply influenced by the style of an Italian neorealism, first of all by its famous masterpiece, Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D. (1952).

Przy analizie filmu pod uwagę wzięto kontekst czasu, kiedy został stworzony, osobowość reżysera w kinie ukraińskim, osobliwości powstania oraz rozwoju szkoły ukraińskiego kina poetyckiego oraz jego cechy podstawowe. Wiele miejsca w artykule poświęcono podobieństwom filmu ze źródłem literackim, porównaniu przedstawienia głównych bohaterów przez Łesię Ukrainkę oraz Jurija Illienkę, zasobom obrazowym, idei głównej oraz jej interpretacji w tekście literackim oraz filmie.
    The article analyzes the film produced by Yuri Illienko, "Lisova Pisnya. Mavka," which was based on one of Lesya Ukrainka’s greatest works, "Lisova Pisnya," written in 1980. The analysis of the film takes into account the context of time in which the film was created as well as the phenomenon of directors working in Ukrainian cinema, especially the emergence, development, and features of the School of Ukrainian Poetic Cinema. The article emphasizes the correlation between the film and the written drama; in particular, the way the protagonists are featured, and how the main idea is implemented in the literature and cinema.

    The article focuses on an analysis of Barbara Stanwyck and Aleksandra Śląska acting in adaptation of radio drama by Lucille Fletcher, Sorry, Wrong Number. It presents transformation efforts, used both in motion picture and TVP Theatre, which have a big influence on the roles created by American and Polish actresses. Their artistic strategies are completely different and obviously determinated by specificity of film industry and TV adaptation. Stanwyck and Śląska face the acting challenge, trying to emphasize their interpretations of the character. The article points out modifications and new motives added in both adaptations, showing that Fletcher’s radio drama is distinguished by flexiblestructure. The author of this article proves that drama’s plot is well disposed towards creative interpretation, in other words: helps discovering valuable senses of Mrs. Stevenson’s character.

    Artykuł dotyczy dydaktycznego wykorzystania filmów fabularnych związanych z problematyką niezależnego dziennikarstwa i etosu dziennikarskiego. We wstępnej części tekstu autor przybliża wspomnianą problematykę, odwołując się do współczesnych filozofów, klasyków myśli liberalnej i orędowników porządku demokratycznego wspartego na wartościach równości i wolności (Habermas, Rawls). Komponentem tak pojmowanego systemu demokracji parlamentarnej, i jednym z jej filarów, są wolne media, które umożliwiają funkcjonowanie niezależnego, a przy tym zaangażowanego w życie publiczne, dziennikarstwa. Problematyka ta znalazła odzwierciedlenie w niektórych filmach fabularnych zaliczanych do gatunku określanego jako dramat polityczny czy dramat społeczny. W artykule omówiono wybrane pozycje tego gatunku z ostatnich 45 lat, poczynając od Wszystkich ludzi prezydenta Alana Pakuli. Autor proponuje dydaktyczne wykorzystanie filmów, spoglądając na nie z trzech perspektyw: fabuły (świata przedstawionego), formy (języka filmu) i tzw. „wielkiej metafory”. Propozycje adresowane są nie tylko do polonistów, lecz także do innych nauczycieli, których działania lokują się w obszarze szkolnego kształcenia humanistycznego.
    The article discusses media and journalism ethics portrayed in the movies from the 1970’s onwards. First the text examines the role of media and journalism in Western democracies established on the values of freedom and equality. Media – according to works of John Rawls and Jurgen Habermas – constitutes the fourth pillar of democracy (the others are: legislature, executive and judiciary). Media independence has been an ever-present issue in cinematography. The article offers didactic tools to analyze five political dramas (All the President’s Men, Wag the Dog, Spotlight, The Post, Mr Jones) and one psychological drama/thriller (The Passenger). Three different perspectives (plot analysis, formal analysis, „great metaphore”) can be used in secondary schools to highlight the role of media and independent journalism.

    The Dramaturgy of Roman Polański’s Two Men with a Wardrobe Marek Hendrykowski’s case study on Polański’s famous student etude Two Men with a Wardrobe reconstructs this wonderful short movie take-by-take: a must for anyone who cares about cinema as art. The young (24 years old) director, together with a team of talented colleagues (cameraman Maciej Kijowski, actors Jakub Goldberg and Henryk Kluba, director’s assistant Andrzej Kostenko and film music composer and jazzman Krzysztof Komeda), demonstrated a very modern way of thinking about the art of the moving image and about the various possibilities hidden in the simple poetics of screen drama. From its opening scene on the beach to the dramatic and nostalgic ending with a comeback to the sea, the film charts two men’s struggles on the difficult path to becoming independent human beings enjoying their own freedom.
