The paper continues the study of independent set dominating sets in graphs which was started by E. Sampathkumar. A subset D of the vertex set V(G) of a graph G is called a set dominating set (shortly sd-set) in G, if for each set X ikkeq V(G) - D there exists a set Y ikkeq D such that the subgraph of G induced X cup Y is connected. The minimum number of vertices of an sd-set in G is called the set domination number gammas (G) of G. An sd-set D in G such that /D/ = gammas(G) is called a gammas-set in G. In this paper we study sd-sets in bipartite graphs which are simultaneously independent. We apply the theory of hypergraphs.

The domination polynomial of a graph G of order n is the polynomial [formula] where d(G, i) is the number of dominating sets of G of size i, and ϒ (G) is the domination number of G. In this paper, we obtain some properties of the coefficients of D(G, x). Also, by study of the dominating sets and the domination polynomials of specific graphs denoted by G'(m), we obtain a relationship between the domination polynomial of graphs containing an induced path of length at least three, and the domination polynomial of related graphs obtained by replacing the path by shorter path. As examples of graphs G' (m), we study the dominating sets and domination polynomials of cycles and generalized theta graphs. Finally, we show that, if n ≡ 0, 2(mod 3) and D(G, x) = D(Cn, x), then G = Cn.

A graph G is called a prism fixer if γ(G×K₂) = γ(G), where γ(G) denotes the domination number of G. It is known that G is a prism fixer if and only if G has a symmetric γ-set.
Hartnell and Rall [On dominating the Cartesian product of a graph and K₂, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 24 (2004), 389-402] conjectured that if G is a connected, bipartite graph such that V(G) can be partitioned into symmetric γ-sets, then G ≅ C₄ or G can be obtained from $K_{2t,2t}$ by removing the edges of t vertex-disjoint 4-cycles. We construct a counterexample to this conjecture and prove an alternative result on the structure of such bipartite graphs.

Furthermore, if a total dominating set C in G has the additional property that for any distinct vertices u, v ∈ V \ C the subsets formed by the vertices of C respectively adjacent to u and v are different, then we say that C is a locating-total dominating set in G. Previously, locating-total dominating sets in strips have been studied by Henning and Jafari Rad (2012). In particular, they have determined the sizes of the smallest locating-total dominating sets in the finite strips of height 2 for all lengths. Moreover, they state as open question the analogous problem for the strips of height 3. In this paper, we answer the proposed question by determining the smallest sizes of locating-total dominating sets in the finite strips of height 3 as well as the smallest density in the infinite strip of height 3.

An objective of the present paper was to develop an evolutionary algorithm for multiobjective optimization of the structural elements of large spatial sections of ships. Selected elements of the multi-criteria optimization theory have been presented in detail. Methods for solution of the multi-criteria optimization problems have been discussed with the focus on the evolutionary optimization algorithms. In the paper an evolutionary algorithm where selection takes place based on the aggregated objective function combined with domination attributes as well as distance to the asymptotic solution, is proposed and applied to solve the problem of optimizing structural elements with respect to their weight and surface area for a high - speed vehicle-passenger catamaran structure, with taking into account several design variables such as plate thickness, scantlings of longitudinal stiffeners and transverse frames, and spacing between longitudinal and transversal members. Details of the computational models were kept at the level typical for conceptual design stage. Scantlings were analyzed by using the selected classification society rules. The results of numerical experiments with the use of the developed algorithm are presented. They show that the proposed genetic algorithm may be considered an efficient tool for multi-objective optimization of ship structures. The paper has been published in the three parts: Part I: Theoretical background on evolutionary multiobjective optimization, Part II: Computational simulations, and Part III: Analysis of the results.

Methods for solution of the multi-criteria optimization problems have been discussed with the focus on the evolutionary optimization algorithms. In the paper an evolutionary algorithm where selection takes place based on the aggregated objective function combined with domination attributes as well as distance to the asymptotic solution is proposed and applied to solve the problem of optimizing structural elements with respect to their weight and surface area on a high speed vehicle-passenger catamaran structure with several design variables, such as plate thickness, scantlings of longitudinal stiffeners and transverse frames, and spacing between longitudinals and transversal members. Details of the computational models were at the level typical for conceptual design. Scantlings were analyzed using the selected rules of a classification society. The results of numerical experiments with the use of the developed algorithm are presented. They show that the proposed genetic algorithm can be an efficient multi-objective optimization tool for ship structures optimization. The paper will be published in three parts: Part I: Theoretical background on evolutionary multi-objective optimization, Part II: Computational investigations, and Part III: Analysis of the results.
