Opis:
The lacustrine Anthracosia Shales of the Intra-Sudetic Basin are sediments that have become the subject of interest due to their dark colour, indicating an increased content of dispersed organic matter. The published data concern the characteristics of macerals, vitrinite reflectance, the results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis and the results of palynological tests. The above studies were supplemented with the current analysis of the extracted bitumens. The results of the distribution of n-alkanes in the Anthracosia Shales corresponds with the results of macerals and palynology. The dominance of short-chain homologues indicates the microbial-algal origin of the organic matter. Some contribution of terrestrial organic matter is not excluded. Three lithofacies intervals differing geochemically have been distinguished: I - dark grey calcareous claystones rich in aliphatic compounds of microbial and algal origin; II - grey mudstones with siderites containing a lower amount of aliphatic compounds in favour of polar and aromatic compounds; III -weakly calcareous mudstones and sandstones, poor in terrestrial organic matter. The distribution of n-alkanes, phenanthrene and methylphenanthrenes (CPI, MPI, MPR, PP1) shown that the maturity of the organic substance is within the oil window. This is further supported by the Rock-Eval data and vitrinite reflectance values.

Opis:
The ammonite biostratigraphy as well as the organic matter content, its type and maturity of the Pałuki Formation, belonging to the fine, siliciclastic Kimmeridge Clay type facies, were investigated in five deep boreholes from the central-eastern part of the Łódź Synclinorium in Central Poland. The studied deposits are assigned to the Eudoxus and Autissiodorensis zones of the Upper Kimmeridgian as well as the Klimovi, Sokolovi, Pseudoscythica and Puschi (=Tenuicostata) zones of the Lower Tithonian (“Lower Volgian”). The Pałuki Formation shows in its lower and middle parts average TOC concentrations of ca. 2.5 wt.% and prominent, restricted increases in organic matter content, which are found in the mid-Eudoxus Zone, the lowermost part of the Autisiodorensis Zone, and at the Sokolovi–Pseudoscythica zone boundary. These stratigraphical intervals correlate well with rich in organic matter levels present in the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of NW Europe. The periodic expansions of Submediterranean and Subboreal-Boreal ammonites corresponded mostly to the transgressive phases, often correlated with a higher content of organic matter. The development of special morphologies of ammonites, such as the small-sized, nectopelagic forms of Nannocardioceras in the Late Kimmeridgian, has also been related to the deposition of shales rich in organic matter during the transgression maxima. The organic matter present in the Pałuki Formation mostly consists of Type II kerogen and is immature or early mature with respect to hydrocarbon generation, which is in agreement with previously published data. Evaluation of the new and published geochemical, lithological and structural data from the Pałuki Formation in the central-eastern part of the Łódź Synclinorium shows that these deposits could not have been a considerable source of crude oil or gas.

Opis:
The paper presents results of geochemical analyses of organic matter (OM) in a tonstein bed and surrounding bituminous coal from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian B) coal seam no. 385/2 from the Bogdanka mine, Lublin Coal Basin. In all studied samples, including those of tonstein and bituminous coal, OM was found to be very similar in composition. Distribution of hydrocarbons in investigated rocks is characterized by strong predominance with odd-number carbon-atom of the long-chain n-alkanes in comparison to the even-number and high concentration of C29 steranes, what implies relatively high input of higher-plant OM in these samples. Minor concentration of C28 steranes and perylene points at presence of fungi. In all extracts, the tri- and tetracyclic diterpanes co-occur with their aromatized derivatives, what suggests presence of the tap resin species - precursors of the conifer families in the plant community. The abundance of sesquiterpanes, pentacyclic triterpanes and benzohopanes indicates a significant bacterial input, most possibly connected with bacterial activity after deposition of terrestrial OM. The original material of tonstein was pyroclastic in orgin, and deposited directly on plants living at the surface of a mire. That material hadn’t had any direct influence on chemicalOMtransformation. The biomarker data, both for coals and tonstein, reveals that sedimentary organic matter was heated up to a temperature corresponding to the level of immature/start of oil window. On the other hand, the increase in thermal maturity value, based on distribution of the aromatic hydrocarbons in organic matter in tonstein (theoretical vitrinite values - Rc, Rcs) are probably due to the presence of incompletely burned organic remains (charcoals), transported to the sedimentary basin along with volcanic ashes.
