Opis:
The paper provides a corpus-based semantic analysis of patients’ opinions on doctors published on the ZnanyLekarz.pl web portal. The analysis is aimed at depicting the medical professionals’ traits and behaviours that patients interpret as expressions of empathy. The fi ndings suggest that while patients value the doctor’s empathy, they perceive it as a relatively rare quality in doctors. The sphere where empathy manifests itself to the greatest extent is undoubtedly doctor–patient communication: unhurried interview, active listening, explaining the course of the necessary medical procedures, responding to the patient’s questions, showing emotional support. Although the fi ndings coincide with the recommendations found in the communication guides addressed to doctors, taking into account the perspective of the patient is necessary, since patients’ perception of empathy may not correlate perfectly with doctors’ self-assessment.

Opis:
Background: In the work of a physician, not only knowledge, and professional skills (technical/hard) are important, but also psychosocial skills (relational/soft). Objectives: The primary goal of the presented research was evaluation of the level (study of the state) of communication competences of physicians and determination of the factors on which this level depends. An additional goal was analysis of the needs and educational possibilities within the existing models of education in the area of interpersonal communication provided in Medical Universities in Poland. Design, setting and participants: Information about educational curricula available on the websites of 12 Medical Universities in Poland were compared. The self-designed questionnaire and adjective check list were subject to standardization from the aspect of reliability and validity. The study groups included 1) occupationally-active physicians (185 respondents) employed in outpatient departments and hospitals, who were covered by a pre-graduate standard educational programme and not trained in interpersonal communication skills as part of their continuing education; 2) medical students covered by a standard educational programme (246 respondents). Results: The conducted analysis of the educational curricula showed a very narrow scope of problems concerning professional medical communication. The results indicating the general state of respondents’ communication competences within all aspects (motivation, skills, knowledge) were relatively low. That clearly indicated an inadequate educational model (students), and lack of post-graduate training in the area of professional medical communication (physicians). Conclusions: The education of students of medicine should cover selected classes within the scope of professional communication competences. These classes should be based on the systemically designed training of skills. The patterning by students of the relations attitudes observed in practising physicians is insufficient. It is necessary to apply a methodical evaluation of communication competences, diagnosing educational needs of occupationally active physicians in this respect. This allows the preparation of courses in accordance with the needs in the area of professional communication competences.

The purpose of this work is to analyze the persuasion which characterizes therapeutic advice and its collaborative goal. It is observed that this type of advice seems to be more effective when it is not limited to a mere scientific demonstration, but it considers also all the interlocutor’s subjective aspects. The study is supported by examples from a little corpus of transcribed real doctor-patient dialogues, collected and analyzed in a previous research work of the author. The research examines the principal arguments, argumentative figures and silences.

The main purpose of this paper is to shed some light on language use in the Algerian healthcare settings where a multilingual situation is prevailing. It reports on communication and linguistic barriers that both patients and doctors encounter during medical visits. The Algerian physicians are taught and trained exclusively in French. Thus, they feel more comfortable when they use French as it enables them to be more informative when they speak about symptoms, diagnosis and treatments. Consequently, when they talk to their patients they inevitably use much French and medical terms which are likely to be unintelligible mainly when they address patients who are not bilinguals or have little or no health literacy in the French language. Thus, we suppose that communication problems arise as a result of linguistic barriers which are due to issues related to proficiency levels in some language varieties, mainly French, as it predominates over Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), Algerian Arabic (AA) and the other Algerian local varieties in the Algerian healthcare settings.

Opis:
An increasing number of researchers indicate that communications between doctors and patients significantly affect the process of treatment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the type of physicians’ communication style on the patient’s motivation to compliance with the medical recommendations following the end of hospitalization. Thirty hospitalized patients took part in the study. They were asked to fill out questionnaires measuring the following groups of variables: doctor – patient communication style, level of positive and negative affect experienced during hospitalization, level of confidence in physicians, the assessment of medical services quality, and level of motivation to compliance with doctors’ recommendations after leaving hospital. Data were analyzed by means of correlation coefficient and regression analysis. The obtained results suggest that the level motivation to compliance with doctors’ recommendations is correlated with two communication styles named as: (1) personal-nonmedical (r = 0,51; p < 0,01) and (2) personal-medical (r = 0,40; p < 0,05). Besides, the results indicated that the motivation to comply with the recommendations is importantly linked to factors such as: trusting doctors (r = 0,50; p < 0,01) and satisfaction with medical services (r = 0,45; p < 0,05). The regression analysis showed that the level of motivation to compliance with doctors’ recommendations after leaving hospital depends on personal-nonmedical style of communication ( = 0,51; t = 3,11; p < 0,01) in 25% (R2 = 0,26; F = 9,66; p < 0,01). The results suggest that patients’ motivation to follow the doctors’ recommendations is the highest when the physician communicates with them in the personal-nonmedical style. The research also demonstrated that physicians need to develop their communication skills, especially their nonmedical aspect.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to present the professional roles and competences of a physician determined by its profession. To achieve my assumption, the answer to the question about the roles played by a doctor in both work and external environments- within a family and media –turned out to be useful. One must add that a medical profession of a physician was a cohesive point of all the points discussed in the study. The methods applied to this research were the analysis and critical view of the professional literature concerning the issues of doctors’ activities in the prism of the roles resulting from the profession. The considerations made in the article reveal an image of a doctor qualified in a care of a patient, involved in educating younger generations of medical doctors, conducting research in order to broaden professional knowledge, understanding the need to cultivate health-promoting behaviors among patients, and taking care of good contact with patients. The doctor in relation to the patient should demonstrate both a high level of professional competence, concentrating to diagnosing a disease and implementing an appropriate treatment, as well as the so-called soft skills, manifested in communication skills and a friendly approach to the patient.

Introduction: Sending and receiving non-verbal messages between the doctor and the patient is very important and it has an influence for the quality of health care. The aim of present studies was to determine the influence of some non-verbal communication factors including modern technology using by doctors for patient’s satisfaction after the examination. Materials and methods: We have asked 597 patients. We have used NDEPT Standard Scale - (Nonverbal Communication in doctor – elderly patient transactions: Development of a tool). The authors of the scale let us use it in Poland. Results: Patients were satisfied with the examination in following situations: during the examination they could see the telephone, computer, medical items and other equipment; the distance between the doctor and the patient was less than 61 cm and there were no physical obstacles; during the examination the doctor was face to face to the patient (angle 180 or 90) and he was using gestures; the eyes of the doctor were in the same line as the eyes of the patient. Conclusions: The skill of the right communication is an important factor in medicine, but it is often underestimated. But we must know that apart from knowledge the efficiency of therapy and the efficiency of diagnostics depend on the right relation between doctors and patients. Skills which are necessary to the right interaction between the doctor and the patient are usually nonverbal.

IntroductionPatient’s confidence is very important in patient – doctor communication. It is very vital when we talk about efficient medical care because it can improve this care significently. It is particularly important for people who can not contact with it easily. Thanks to watching relations between patient and doctor we can get to know the way the patient judges references of the doctor during his professional activities. The aim of the thesisThe aim of these studies was to estimate the level of patient’s confidence after the last medical appointment. The studies were made with the help of Anderson and Dedrick scale. ResultsPatients were satisfied after the appointment when during the examination they could see a telephone and a computer on the desk, medical equipment and other medical things. The doctor was closer than 61 cm from them and patients could not see any physical barriers. During the examination the position of the doctor was open, he used gestures and he was sitting face to face to the patient (angle 180° or 90°). His eyes were at the same level as patient’s eyes. ConclusionsThe ability of proper communication with the patient is a very important element of medical care. However, it is often underestimated. But efficiency of therapy and efficiency of diagnostics depend on these factors.
