Opis:
The paper presents the issue of conservation of species diversity of the Białowieża Forest in the context of both natural and human−related disturbances. These disturbances, in the authors’ opinion, were the main factor that shaped the unique species diversity of this area. Examples of natural disturbances occurring in the Białowieża Forest include the impact of wind, insect outbreaks and, to a lesser extent, fires. On the other hand anthropogenic disturbances are related to various forms of forest use, which historically took place here, i.e. grazing by domestic animals, beekeeping, charcoal production, and recently also forest management. Currently, in the situation of rarity and unpredictability of natural disturbances, as well as due to a significant decrease in human impact on forests of the Białowieża Forest, there is a risk of decrease of biodiversity, which is related to the process of natural succession, homogenization of the forest and the decline of favourable habitats for the development of some organisms. This particularly applies to the so−called ‘open forest’ species that are dependent on sunny places in forests. Historically these species found favourable conditions in the Białowieża Forest in many sites, where traditional forms of forest use took place, but also in areas used for traditional forest management. At present, it is necessary to adapt forest management on the one hand and nature conservation on the other, in order to meet the requirements of diverse groups of organisms, both requiring passive as well as active methods of conservation. The authors postulate the necessity of introducing a diverse conservation strategy in the Białowieża Forest.

The Nigeria cattle breeds and their productivity were reviewed. A case was made for their conservation and management, an action plan was also proposed for the Nigerian government. The indigenous cattle breeds of Nigeria have short calving interval, are hardy and trypanotolerant, known for early maturity with low mortality rate for total herd (2% and 4.7% for Muturu and Keteku respectively). The Kuri has high potentials for milk production and can calve up to twelve times in life time. They also have enormous contribution to source of income to many cattle rearers in Nigeria. The indigenous cattle breeds of Nigeria are endangered. The Muturu, N’dama and Keteku are endangered due to extensive uncontrolled crossbreeding with exotic breeds. There is also waning interest among farmers in the use of intact indigenous breeds. The Kuri and Biu cattle breeds are endangered due primarily to environment factors. The civil war also had a significant effect on the elimination of some indigenous cattle breeds especially the forest breeds. The endangered indigenous cattle breed can be conserved by the In-situ techniques. The cost of maintenance of the insitu preservation is often high, but it is to be preferred because it is less technically involving and can be well manage given adequate technologies and funds. The inbreeding effect and maintenance of natural habitat can be reduce by use of appropriate mating system and preservation of the original environment. The live conservation techniques can be organise into park with wild life for revenue generation. Rural farming communities can also be organize to form National indigenous cattle breed ownership Scheme (NICABROS), as a community based conservation management technology are action plans that are propose for insitu conservation of Nigerian endangered cattle breeds.

Pszczoły - to niezwykle różnorodna i ważna grupa owadów; około 4600 gatunków pszczół występuje w Ameryce Północnej.

Genetic diversity manipulates a prime and vital role in the sustainable use of genetic resources. The data highlighted more insights into the genetic diversity of the arta plant (Calligonum polygonoides subsp. comosum) populations collected from three localities, Qalabshu (QQ), Mutubas (MM) and Gamasa (GG), in Egypt as gene pool for biodiversity conservation and afforestation. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers investigated the population pattern and structure. A total of 129-amplicons oscillated from 145 to 1505 bp and a total of 19-amplicons were specific markers with an average of nine bands for each population. The Shannon index (I) scored at an average of 0.3. The diversity (h) oscillated from 0.11 to 0.25. The similarity matrices based on Jaccard coefficient recorded positive values. A higher correlation (r = 0.83) was between the combined Qalabshu (QQ) and Mutubas (MM) matrices using the Mantel test with 1,000 permutations. This species has higher adaptability for their regions. This gene pool is a valuable reservoir for enriching genetic diversity and provides basal information for the biodiversity conservation of a dominant species. The dominant species can be utilised in afforestation in the same region or another region which has the same environmental conditions.

Opis:
The production of native corn at regional level is greatly limited by the seasonality of rainfall, availability of adequate lands, poor fertility status of the soil, high input costs and constraints of resources of the local corn growers and/or producers. The challenges of reduced cultivable area give very little opportunity for increasing production area in a sustainable manner; it is important to note that the soil recover their fertility status through crop rotation and prolonged rest period (> 25 years) known as sequential agroforestry system or "milpa". During 2015, corn collections were performed in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico that included five races from the Yucatan (in localities of Nohacal and Peto) and Campeche (Calakmul, Suc-Tuc, Sakabchen, I Chek) states. The races identified were: 1) Nal-Tel (gallito), 2) Dzit Bacal, 3) Xnu’uc Naal (Tuxpeño), 4) Palomero and, 5) Tabloncillo. The local varieties, Pix Cristo (Knees of Christ), Eh Hu (Purple maize) and Chac Chu’ub (Chac´s Blood or Red maize), are included within the Tuxpeño (Xnu´uk Naal) race. The land race of corn that is in imminent danger of extinction is Nal-Tel, characterized by its precocity and ability to escape periods of low rainfall; is important to rescue it for adoption to the practices of local and regional production. The adaptation of this race as a germplasm is important due to its resilience to climate change itself. Palomero, Tabloncillo, Pix Cristo, Chac Chu´ub and Eh Hu can thus be used in traditional food industry, to preserve the traditional knowledge and to provide opportunities for additional income for the local, rural communities. Yellow Palomero and Tabloncillo races are new records of germplasm for the region; and hence essential is exchanging their seeds among local producers and growers.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to provide a phytosociological and ecological characterization of meadow communities in the Łąki w Komborni Natura 2000 site (SE Poland), assess the trends in their transformation, and indicate the major threats impacting on their conservation. The study was conducted in 2015–2016. Three types of meadow communities were distinguished (alliances Molinion, Arrhenatherion, Filipendulion), due to the absence of the species characteristic for associations. The species richness noted per relevé differed significantly between the types of meadows (Kruskal–Wallis test: H = 21.65, p < 0.05). The highest floristic biodiversity (H' = 2.99) was noted for the meadow patches classified as in the Molinion alliance and the lowest (H' = 2.50) was found for the patches from the Filipendulion alliance. Mean values of the ecological indicators (F, R, N) differed between the meadow communities. The greatest disparity was noted for the mean values of the soil moisture indicator (from 6.42 to 7.45). Patches classified in the Filipendulion alliance were developed on the wettest soil substratum, whereas the patches classified in the Arrhenatherion alliance were predominant on a relatively dry substratum. The abandonment of traditional management practices (grazing, mowing) has contributed to transformation of the Molinia meadows, disappearance of characteristic species and succession of shrubs. The Molinia meadow habitat should be conserved by improvement of protection measures (appropriate mowing regime and removal of biomass) to conserve a high species richness and the rare and protected plant species.

This paper present the data for monitoring forest conditions and forest resource management by a local community adjacent to the Doi Laung Wildlife Sanctuary, Huaimai Sub-district, Song District, Phrae Province, Thailand. This study uses quantitative forest surveys, interviews, discussions, and descriptions of the historical context of public participation in forest management including a detailed assessment of field conditions. The findings of a forest resources inventory show that (1) from the three sampled areas, Doi Laung Wildlife Sanctuary has highest richness, followed by village #16 and #14, and (2) Huaikhon #16 implied the process of framework to maintain a healthy condition and response to community needs with collective management. The conceptual model assessment that links key group indicators and drivers is presented based on previously developed assessment models. The framework focuses on the best way to provide forest management, forest fire prevention, and firefighting as well as monitoring of Check-dam construction and other activities that support the recovery of the forest community. This paper demonstrates the general of an environmental assessment framework to applying organize environmental information to facilitate policy decision making for the sustainable development.

The current knowledge and documentation on the origins and relationship between Gyimesi Racka reared in Hungary and the Romanian Turcana is rather controversial. Lack of information and scientific reliable proofs for the divergent theories found in the two countries motivated us to implement a trial using molecular methods to assess the genetic distance and diversity in the two breeds. Hair follicles were collected from Gyimesi Racka (2 phenotypes) and from Turcana (6 ecotypes). The 599 bp segment of the D-loop region of the mitochondrial DNA was sequenced. Altogether, 42 haplotypes were identified, while 23 were found in both populations. Populations were highly diverse according to the haplotype and nucleotide diversity indices. AMOVA analysis showed that most of the variation was observed within populations (98%), indicating a weak genetic structure between the two breeds. Animals were grouped into seven groups based on their phenotype; however genetic distances among them were also low. Tajima's D, Fu's Fs, goodness-of-fit statistics, mismatch distribution and network analysis suggested recent demographic expansion. Current comprehensive mtDNA study indicates that there is very low level of genetic differentiation between the Gyimesi Racka and Turcana populations therefore they are de facto one trans-boundary breed.

Opis:
The present study has attempted to highlight the avifaunal diversity in two contrasting seasons (pre and post monsoons) from a protected tropical mixed deciduous forest (Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary, KWS) in the state of Odisha, India. Through modified line transect method, a total of 107 species of birds belonging to 49 families under 15 orders have been reported. Among them, 12 are winter visitors, 3 are summer visitors, 1 is near threatened and 1 is vulnerable species. Insectivores and frugivores constitute major foraging guilds. Closed canopy forests, forest edges, woodland areas and wetlands provide suitable habitats to all those avifauna. Lower canopy level was found to act as the major microhabitat for several species for meeting major ecobiological attributes of avifauna. The pre-monsoon and monsoon periods have appeared to be the ideal nesting seasons for most of the avian members. Canopy foliage and tree holes were seen to offer the most suitable nesting sites. Significant differences in respect of species richness have been observed among different habitats in different seasons (F5.91 ,p ≤ 0 in premonsoon, F6.53, p ≤ 0 in post monsoon). The highest Shannon Weiner diversity index (H′) was recorded from the forest edge (3.8) during premonsoon and that of lowest in orchard or plantation areas (2.96) during post monsoon. Species Dominance value (D) was observed to be highest both for grassland and orchards and plantation areas (0.06). The field based study attempts to assess avian diversity (qualitative and quantitative) in the light of global conservation programme. Though this area is prone to varying levels of anthropogenic interventions particularly the tourism activities, an overall healthy bird diversity has been found to exist, the knowledge on which is expected to be utilized for the holistic eco-management of forest ecosystem in general and Kuldiha wildlife sanctuary in particular. A number of hypothesis have been proposed in respect of avifaunal habitat selection, diversity and acclimation with wildlife friendly human association for their successful coexistence.

The genetic diversity within and among nine natural populations of Thymus hirtus Willd. subsp. algeriensis (Boiss. et Reut.) Murb. from different geographical and bioclimatic zones were assessed using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA data. A total of 154 bands were generated from seven selected primers. 141 bands were polymorphic (P=91.56%). The genetic diversity within a population based on Shannon's index which was high (H'pop=0.307) and varied according to bioclimatic zones. A high genetic differentiation among populations (GST=0.335 and FST=0.296) was revealed, suggesting a population isolation and a low level of gene flow among them. The major proportion of the variation was attributable to individual differences within populations. The genetic structure is in accordance with geography distances. The Neighbour- joining tree based on Nei's and Li's genetic distance among individuals showed that individuals from each population clustered together. The UPGMA dendrogram based on FST values revealed three clusters each of them includes populations closuring to their geographical origin. The high genetic structure of populations resulted from genetic drift caused both by the habitat fragmentation and the low size of most populations. The in situ conservation should interest all populations. The ex situ conservation should be based on the collection of seeds rather within than among populations because of the maximum of variation was revealed within populations.

In this research we study butterflies diversity and abundance in North Czech Coal Basin (NCCB) and Landscape protected area Ceske stredohori (LP A). Butterflies are very sensitive species for changes in aricultural management (Denis 2004). They can be used as bioindicators and umbrella species. We study 4 localities - each of them includes 3 study plots. Two localities are situated in LPA and two are situated at dumps of (NCCB). We compare three different succesion stages (low xerotherm grassland, mezophilus grassland, areas with trees and bushes) on two different types of landscape (seminatural biotops x reclamations). In 2009 there were done four observations on each locality and two visits were done in 2010. Higher number of species was found in LPA and also more of rare and endangered species were observed there compare to dumps. Altough dumps seem to be good potential habitats for butterflies. Important for all localities is, if there is an active antropogenic management or not.
Porównujemy trzy różne etapy sukcesji (niskie murawy kserotermiczne, murawy mezofilne, obszary z drzewami i krzewami) w ramach dwóch, odmiennych typów krajobrazu (seminaturalne biotopy x rekultywacja). W 2009 roku dokonano czterech obserwacji w każdej lokalizacji, a w 2010 roku przeprowadzone zostały dwie wizyty.

Opis:
The subject of the study was a population of Sorbus torminalis resulting from spontaneous regeneration from seeds in northern Poland at the north-eastern limit of the species distribution. The population, occupying a fenced plot of 1.72 ha in the Forest District of Jamy, amounted to 579 individuals of variable age classes up to about 19 years old. Six polymorphic gene loci: MDH-B, ME-A, 6PGD-B, ADH-B, PGM-A, PGM-B were studied in 532 individuals recruited post-fencing and 21 potentially parental, adult trees. The analysis showed similarly high levels of genetic diversity within both subsets of individuals but there was also a noticeable change in genetic structure between them. Detailed genetic analysis of the post-fencing recruits revealed lack of significant differences between different age groups based on DBH within the fenced plot.
