geometric and natural convention of determining indicators of forest diversity

diversity characteristics
Opis:
There are two conventions of determining indicators of forest diversity: geometric and natural. Indicators in the geometric convention are determined from the ratio of differences in the values of the real characteristic to the value of the characteristic adopted as a comparative norm. Indicators in the natural convention are determined from the ratio of differences in the values of a characteristic in the real world to the mean value of that characteristic by standard deviation. The indicator−based assessment of forests in Poland is based on the geometric convention of similarities and standards included in yield and stand volume increment tables. This convention of similarities (map and plan scales) taken directly from technology has no natural justification. Therefore, it is necessary to determine indicators of forest diversity based on natural convention with special reference to the uneven−aged forests based on natural forests.

Opis:
Citrus genus includes a wide number of species that have been long cultivated and well adapted in Tunisia. It is represented by small number of plantations and considered as underutilized in Tunisia. Our goal was to genetically characterize Tunisian lime genotypes to obtain data useful for gene conservation and breeding purposes. The survey of genotypes was conducted in the Cap Bon region, where citrus cultivation is the most spread. Sixteen quantitative and 19 qualitative parameters were evaluated. The observed accessions belonged to three different species: Citrus limetta, Citrus latifolia (limes Byrsa), and Citrus limettioides (limes of Palestine) according to Tanaka classification. Principal component analysis confirmed these classifications. Four-cell analysis (FCA) was used to determine the most threatened genotypes. Quantitative traits were evaluated and allowed the discrimination between genotypes. Many quantitative traits of fruit and juice were highly positively and significantly correlated. Phenotypic diversity was determined using Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’). The highest value of diversity index was observed for both vesicle thickness and thickness of segment walls (H’ = 0.98). Intermediate values were observed for both fruit axis (H’= 0.49) and pulp firmness (H’ = 0.43). However, fruit shape (H’ = 0.24), shape of fruit apex (H’ = 0.24), and vesicle length (H’ = 0.33) presented the lowest values of diversity index. Current findings will be useful to conserve threatened genotypes ex situ and on farm and also will guide strategic conservation on Citrus genetic resources for future breeding programs.

Opis:
Purpose: Knowing the factors that might affect board structure is an important step in understanding boards and their role in corporate governance. This research aims to examine the effect of firm characteristics closely related to corporate governance mechanisms, such as the model of corporate governance, shareholder capital concentration, and stock exchange listing on board structure variables (size, independence, and gender diversity). Methodology: The sample of this study stems from large Macedonian joint-stock companies. We run a hierarchical linear regression of board characteristics on common demographic firm characteristics as control variables and contextual firm characteristics related to corporate governance mechanisms as independent variables. Findings: Joint-stock companies in the Republic of North Macedonia have relatively small boards, which provide no positive effects that would originate from the larger number of board members. Moreover, the number of outside independent members is small, insufficient to influence the boards with greater objectivity, independence, and quality. Larger companies with a one-tier model have statistically significant larger corporate boards and a larger number of independent directors. Implications: The best corporate governance practices worldwide must be used as a basis for future improvements of corporate governance in joint-stock companies in developing economies.

Opis:
Issues relating to food availability, accessibility, affordability, and utilization remain of paramount importance among rural households. In order to formulate or implement relevant food security programs in rural areas, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the food security status of rural households. This study sought to determine the prevalence of food insecurity among rural households in the Eastern Cape Province, as well as its key socioeconomic and demographic factors. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 240 households using questionnaires about food security. A convenience sampling method was used to collect data, along with a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used to analyze the data. The binary logistic regression model revealed that age of household head, education level of household head, access to credit, household income, and household size were all associated with food security status. Thus, this study recommends that the government at all levels (local, state, and federal) have an adequate budget allocated to increasing awareness of the benefits of participating in farming to improve the livelihood outcomes of households

Opis:
During 2015, samples from 22 apple trees showing proliferation symptoms were collected in southwest Bulgaria and Central and South Poland and tested for phytoplasma presence. ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma mali’ was identified in 18 samples based on results of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the 16S rRNA gene amplified in nested PCR using primer pair P1/P7 followed by R16F2n/R16R2 and F1/B6 primer pairs. The nitroreductase and rhodonase-like genes and ribosomal protein genes rpl22 and rps3 were then analyzed using PCR-RFLP technique to study the genetic variability of the phytoplasma strains. Two restriction profiles, P-I or P-II, were obtained from fragments of 16S rDNA plus 16S-23S spacer region digested with HpaII enzyme. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of nitroreductase and rhodonase-like genes using digestion with HincII endonuclease revealed that all ‘Ca. P. mali’ strains belonged to the subtype AP-15. Analysis of rpl22 and rps3 ribosomal protein genes digested with AluI enzyme resulted in classification of detected phytoplasma strains to rpX-A subgroup.
