Opis:: Biology and genomics in the near future will play a major role in day to day activities related with health. Today biologists and doctors work together in order to decode and analyze large amount of data extracted from the DNA analysis of proteins. Advanced health applications will be needed in order to store, retrieve, process the large amount of data - being produced today by genomics and bioinformatics analysis - in order to extract useful results in a reasonable time frame. In this paper we present the results from our research regarding the use of grid technologies with health applications. We present the current status of standardization activities and working groups, which are currently involved with the specification of health applications and the standardization of needed components such us security, functionality, etc., which are being introduced by the use of grid technologies.

Opis:: The growing number of resources available to researchers in the e-Science domain has opened new possibilities for constructing complex scientific applications while at the same time introducing new requirements for tools which assist developers in creating such applications. This paper discusses the problems of rapid application development, the use of distributed resources and a uniform approach to resource registration, discovery and access. It presents the Grid Resource Registry, which delivers an abstract layer for computational resources. The Registry is a central place where developers may search for available services and from which the execution engine receives technical specifications of services. The Registry is used throughout the lifetime ofthe e-science application, starting with application design, through implementation to execution.
Rosnąca liczba zasobów dostępnych dla naukowca z jednej strony otworzyła nowe możliwości w konstruowaniu złożonych aplikacji naukowych, a z drugiej przyniosła dodatkowe wymagania dla narzędzi wspierających proces tworzenia oraz uruchamiania takich aplikacji. W artykule przedstawiono wyzwania związane z szybkim wytwarzaniem aplikacji naukowych, które wykorzystują rozproszone zasoby oraz związane z nimi trudności wynikające z rejestrowania, wyszukiwania i wywoływania zasobów używanych przez aplikację. Rozważania przedstawiono na przykładzie Grid Resource Registry - centralnego rejestru, który dostarcza abstrakcyjnego opisu rozproszonych zasobów, dzięki czemu w znaczący sposób proces wytwarzania oraz uruchamiania aplikacji naukowych może zostać uproszczony.

Opis:: In the age of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Web and the Internet have changed significantly the way applications are developed, deployed and used. One of recent trends is modern design of web-applications based on SOA. This process is based on the composition of existing web services into a single scenario from the point of view of a particular user or client. This allows IT companies to shorten the producttime to market process. On the other hand, it raises questions about the quality of the application, trade-offs between quality factors and attributes and measurements of these. Services are usually hosted and executed in an environment managed by its provider that assures the quality attributes such as availability or throughput. Therefore, in this paper an attempt has been made to perform quality measurements towards the creation of efficient, dependable and user-oriented Web applications. First, the process of designing service-based applications is described. Next, metrics for subsequent measurements of efficiency, dependability and usability of distributed applications are presented. These metrics will assess the efforts and trade-offs in a Web-based application development. As examples, we describe a pair of multimedia applications which we have developed in our department and executed in a cluster-based environment. One of them runs in the BeesyCluster middleware and the second one in the Kaskada platform. For these applications we present results of measurements and conclude about relations between quality attributes in the presented application development model. This knowledge can be used to reason about such relations for new similar applications and be used in rapid and quality development of the latter.

Opis:: Modern Internet and web applications involve interactions among remote host computers connected by communication networks. Simulation modelling is an important technique to evaluate performance in the implementation of a web-distributed application over given networks formed by computer hosts connected by heterogeneous networks. In this paper we extend a previous work concerning the construction of a queue-based simulator of communication networks. We define a set of new queue-based object types which permit us to specify the behaviour of a web-distributed application whose software components run over different hosts in a given communication network. We apply this technique to show how to build a simulator to evaluate the performance of various software architectures for a web-distributed application run over a given computer network.
