The paper is devoted to the analysis of Mrs de Winter, one of the main characters from Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, as an example of a Gothic figure. The analysis traces the stages in the development of the heroine by demonstrating how she first becomes, through the process of gothicisation, “the Gothic damsel in distress.” Vulnerable and easily threatened, she is defined solely in relation to Mr de Winter, her aristocratic husband, whose status she is unable to match. As a result of her growth as an individual, Mrs de Winter is degothicised. We witness a change in her attitude toward her tormentors: she no longer feels intimidated; she starts developing in what we view as an identity-building process her public and personal sense of a mature and independent individual.

Research background: The concept of debt capacity assumes that a maximum value of debt ratio exists that when exceeded triggers unfavourable consequences, such as drop in market value, default or a change in the business' creditworthiness. With the current state of the art there is a priori no theoretical assurance that such a specific value exists, or rather it is represented by an interval of values. Beyond that, our understanding of debt capacity is often limited to a theoretical approximation by firm-specific factors, while the context of macroeconomic factors, especially those critical for SMEs, is neglected. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to present a novel approach to estimating SMEs' debt capacity. Further, the aim is to answer the question of what firm-level and macroeconomy conditions lead to exhausting the SMEs' debt capacity and under what conditions a specific value of maximum debt capacity could be estimated. Methods: To estimate the debt capacity, we suggest a use of an information entropy minimising heuristic and the Minimal Description Length Principle. In this approach, the observed feature space is categorised into several regions. In this case, such a region represents a set of firm- and macroeconomy-specific conditions forming the debt capacity of the SMEs. To the best of our knowledge, such an approach has not yet been used in debt capacity applications. Findings & value added: We found out that the debt ratio itself provides little explanation of exhausted debt capacity, suggesting that high debt levels are compensated for by other factors. By using the suggested approach, a set of more than 100 different regions was analysed. It was found that in case of five regions (sets of conditions) the debt capacity is exhausted, as the high level of debt has significant distress consequences.

Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS; Simons & Gaher, 2005) measures individual differences in experiencing and enduring negative emotional states. It consists of four dimensions: tolerance of perceived distress, assessment and acceptance of emotions, absorption of attention, and emotion regulation. The study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of a Polish adaptation of the Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS). A total of 1,210 individuals aged between 18 and 69 participated in the study (45% men, 51% women). After obtaining a Polish translation, we conducted EFA and CFA to examine the validity of the construct. EFA revealed a two-factor structure of the DTS, with Regulation as a separate factor. The original and modified CFA model with Regulation as a separate first-order factor showed an unsatisfactory fit to the data. Better CFA parameters were obtained with the reduced, three-factor version of the DTS. Four- and three-factor versions both show good internal consistency, temporal stability, convergent, and discriminant validity, with the exception of the Regulation subscale. As expected, distress tolerance is positively associated with positive affectivity, satisfaction with life, and self-control ability, but negatively with negative affectivity, perceived stress, and difficulties in emotion regulation. Men declared higher levels of distress tolerance than women. The Regulation subscale showed the weakest validity results; in terms of content, it seems to deviate from the concept of distress tolerance. With all those findings in mind, we recommend the valid and reliable three-factor version to be used in further studies.

Opis:
Ból należy do najmniej oczekiwanych doznań zmysłowych w życiu człowieka, najtrudniej poddaje się też zabiegom usensowniającym. Istotą bólu jest jego intymny, w najwyższym stopniu subiektywny charakter. Właściwość ta generuje szereg dodatkowych problemów i aporii, głównie natury komunikacyjnej. Doświadczanie bólu odsłania ułomność i kruchość ludzkiego istnienia. Rewiduje on wszelkie wcześniej ustalone relacje i więzi, odmienia radykalnie założone cele i pragnienia. Ból w najwyższym stopniu izoluje doświadczającego go człowieka od całego otoczenia, ustanawiając trudną do przebicia barierę nawet wobec najbliższych. Ból jest doświadczeniem nieprzekładalnym i nieofiarowalnym. Z perspektywy nauk społecznych z powodzeniem można mówić o daleko idącej instrumentalizacji bólu. Aż do początku dziewiętnastego wieku odgrywał on niezwykle ważną rolę w organizowaniu życia społecznego, stając się sprawdzonym środkiem dyscyplinującym i wychowawczym.
The main thesis of the article is that human beings never suffer exclusively in, or through, their body. The drama of pain necessarily takes place within a social landscape, constituting the sum of various influences, such as the tradition, the dominating worldview, the media, and the social institutions. It is the dominating culture that gives suffering a meaning, or questions it, thus affecting the scale and extent to which people experience pain. Beginning with the 20th century, pain and suffering stopped being considered as unavoidable and ever present phenomena. In fact one may discern a distinctive mark of contemporary Western culture in its refusal to accept pain. Due the predominating orientation towards consumption and fun, the experiences of pain and suffering are carefully eliminated from the public space. The cult of vitalism cannot handle the presence of disease or the grimace of pain. The models of understanding pain discussed in the article are contrasted with the biomedical one. The author claims that any research on pain must take into account its sociocultural context. An approach to pain which reduces its scope merely to the level of the body may even turn out harmful to patients, pain being not only a medical issue. Since the dominating set of notions concerning the experience of pain is formed by the society and culture as such, attention should be paid to its emotional and social aspects. The author holds that the social and cultural context is extremely important not only to the interpretation of pain, but also to the definition of its intensity. It is also the social context that determines the choice of traditional or modern pain-killing techniques. Thus one may speak not only of pharmacology and herbal medicine in this context, but also about a specific cultural anesthesiology, namely, systems of religion, support communities or creative expression, all of which serve to neutralize the feeling of loneliness and defenselessness. The article also emphasizes the problem of communication. Since pain is a highly subjective phenomenon, any attempt at measuring it is doomed to failure. Neither is pain easy to express or verbalize. Any pursuit of verbal or non-verbal ways of expressing pain is necessarily influenced by culture.

It is widely accepted that a cancer diagnosis is a stressful and often traumatic experience for patients. Stress as a psychological side-effect of diagnosis has been well-researched. However, it is also possible that the life changing and potentially life-threatening aspects of disease may lead to symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including heightened anxiety, intrusive and distressing thoughts, avoidance of reminders of the trauma and sleeping disturbances. These symptoms may be of short duration but studies show that is possible for patients to live with PTSD for years after diagnosis and treatment. Even if not all the criteria for a full PTSD diagnosis are present, subthreshold or subsyndromal PTSD has been shown to cause significant distress and affect the quality of life of breast cancer patients. Given that with earlier diagnoses and ever more effective treatment interventions, the number of women who survive cancer and whose survival intervals are longer, identification, monitoring and treatment of patients living with PTSD becomes ever more important.

Opis:
Background: Lung cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases with high mortality. Patients diagnosed with lung cancer are most likely to exhibited psychiatric symptomatology while they experience poor quality of life. Purpose: To examine the relationship between psychological distress and quality of life (QoL) in lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in which 110 lung cancer patients were recruited to participate. Data was collected with an anonymous self-administrated question-naire consisted by three parts: a sheet concerning demographic information, the scales Missoula Vitas Quality of Life Index-15 and General Health Questionnaires (GHQ)-28. Results: Women accounted for 51.8% of the sample, 27.3% were ≥56 years old and 24.5% were in the age between 35-44. Moreover, 38.2% were high school graduates while 46.4% were married. Age, educational level, and marital status were found to be related to patients’ perceived QoL. QoL was found to be related to psychological variables for GHQ-28. Conclusions: Quality of life can be considered to be a result of disease and treatment, as perceived by the patient and is affected by factors such as injury, anxiety, perceptions and social opportunities. This has a direct effect on patients’ functioning and ability to self-care.

Previous research has shown the importance of time perspectives (TP) in future-oriented decision making. However, the possible associations between time perspectives and seeking out psychological help in need have not been examined extensively, especially taking further influencing factors into consideration. Therefore, this study aimed to assess associations between personal time perspectives, stigma, socio-economic factors, and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (ATTSPPH) in a sample of adults in the general population in Hungary (N=273) aged 18-84 (mean=28.47, SD= 10.31). Multivariate regression analyses found that attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help were inversely associated with stigma, and residing outside of the capital city and positively associated with female gender. None of the time perspectives were associated with help-seeking. The results are discussed regarding the importance of mental health in Hungary.

ObjectivesMedical students suffer from a considerable level of stress, which can result in the deterioration of their mental health, including depression or suicidal ideation. They are afraid to seek help due to stigmatization and environmental ostracism. The goal of the study is to analyze the psychological support and stress management programs for students supported by medical schools in PolandMaterial and MethodsThe authors sent out e-mails with 9 questions regarding the issue being analyzed to all 19 medical schools in Poland. They obtained answers from 15 such schools, which corresponds to a response rate of 79%. The study was conducted in 2018–2019, before the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.ResultsDue to the lack of central regulations, support is provided by medical schools individually. Those solutions focus on short-term, temporary therapy. If a longer therapy is needed, students are redirected to external health providers. Moreover, information about the support is not transferred by student-friendly communication channels. Conclusions: Support should be flexible, and it should quickly adapt to the emerging trends and consider students’ feedback. A future model of psychological support could be a center organized as a transfer point between a university problem-solving facility and external health providers, concentrating on short-term activity. Quick support would eliminate potential complications and more serious mental problems.

Research background: The state of financial distress or imminent bankruptcy are very difficult situations that the management of every company wants to avoid. For these reasons, prediction of company bankruptcy or financial distress has been recently in a focus of economists and scientists in many countries over the world. Purpose of the article: Various financial indicators, mostly financial ratios, are usually used to predict the financial distress. In order to create a strong prediction model and a statistically significant prediction of bankruptcy, it is advisable to use a deep statistical analysis of the data. In this paper, we analysed the real financial ratios of Slovak companies from the year 2017. In the phase of data preparation for further analysis, we checked the existence of outliers and found that there are some companies that are multivariate outliers because are significantly different from other companies in the database. Thus, we deeply focused on these outlying companies and analysed whether to be an outlier is a sign of financial distress. Methods: We analysed whether there are much more non-prosperous companies in the set of outlier companies and if their financial indicators are significantly different from those of the prosperous companies. For these analyses, we used testing of the statistical hypotheses, such as the test for equality of means and chi-square test. Findings & Value added: The ratio of non-prosperous companies between the outliers is significantly higher than 50 % and the attributes of non-prosperity and being an outlier are dependent. The means of almost all financial ratios of prosperous and non-prosperous companies among outliers are significantly different.

Background Investigations on workplace bullying in the countries of Eastern Europe are yet not too extensive. The aim of the study has been to identify the most frequent bullying behavior and to explore the associations with psychological distress and post-traumatic stress symptoms in 3 female-dominated occupations in Kaunas, Lithuania. Material and Methods This crosssectional study employed 517 teachers (response rate (RR) = 71.3%), 174 family physicians (RR = 65.7%) and 311 internal medicine department nurses (RR = 69.1%). The twenty-two-item Negative Acts Questionnaire was used for measuring the exposure to bullying behavior, Goldberg 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) – psychological distress, Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) inventory – post-traumatic stress symptoms, Karasek & Theorell Demand-Control questionnaire – psychosocial job characteristics. The International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) SPSS Statistics version 20.0 was used for performing the statistical analysis. Logistic regression was used for assessing the associations among 22 negative acts as continuous variable and mental health outcomes adjusting to age, psychosocial factors at work and everyday life. Results Exposure to workplace bullying behavior on a weekly/daily basis was prevalent among family physicians at the rate of 19%, among nurses – 12.9%, among teachers – 4.1%. Even after adjustment to age, psychosocial job characteristics and threatening life events, the exposure to 22 negative acts as continuous variable was significantly associated with psychological distress and post-traumatic stress symptoms for all 3 occupations. Conclusions Health care sector is particularly affected by workplace bullying. Exposure to bullying behavior was associated with mental health problems for all 3 occupations. Preventive measures are necessary to improve psychosocial work environment conditions in healthcare and educational institutions in Lithuania. Med Pr 2017;68(3):307–314

Opis:
Introduction: In this study, we examined the impact of government measures being imposed to slow down the spread of COVID-19 pandemic on long-distance runners’ sports habits and well-being. Material and methods: Data from a total of 323 runners (mean age 41.72 (8.78), 41.8% male) were analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods. Results: 46.9% of runners changed their running habits during the pandemic, 20.4% partly changed it. The poorest psychological well-being was found in a group that changed previous habits. Only 9 individuals reported no running activity at all, and 10 trained on a treadmill instead of a field. Overall, our respondents ran significantly more during the quarantine than before, which is partly explained by changed working conditions, reduced working hours, or lost jobs. The explanatory variables of excess running were previous mileage and distress. Conclusions: Running is suitable for relieving distress and restoring the feeling of freedom. All of these were confirmed by our subjects in the survey interview.
