Opis:
Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS; Simons & Gaher, 2005) measures individual differences in experiencing and enduring negative emotional states. It consists of four dimensions: tolerance of perceived distress, assessment and acceptance of emotions, absorption of attention, and emotion regulation. The study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of a Polish adaptation of the Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS). A total of 1,210 individuals aged between 18 and 69 participated in the study (45% men, 51% women). After obtaining a Polish translation, we conducted EFA and CFA to examine the validity of the construct. EFA revealed a two-factor structure of the DTS, with Regulation as a separate factor. The original and modified CFA model with Regulation as a separate first-order factor showed an unsatisfactory fit to the data. Better CFA parameters were obtained with the reduced, three-factor version of the DTS. Four- and three-factor versions both show good internal consistency, temporal stability, convergent, and discriminant validity, with the exception of the Regulation subscale. As expected, distress tolerance is positively associated with positive affectivity, satisfaction with life, and self-control ability, but negatively with negative affectivity, perceived stress, and difficulties in emotion regulation. Men declared higher levels of distress tolerance than women. The Regulation subscale showed the weakest validity results; in terms of content, it seems to deviate from the concept of distress tolerance. With all those findings in mind, we recommend the valid and reliable three-factor version to be used in further studies.

Opis:
Introduction. Emergency medical system (EMS) workers are exposed to traumatic events that may lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objectives. The purpose of this study was to explore and discuss the relationship between peritraumatic distress (PD) and elevated posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in EMS employees. Material and methods. A cross-sectional study including 100 EMS employees was conducted. Demographic and occupational data were collected for each subject. The Polish version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) was used to evaluate PTSS and the Polish version of the Peritraumatic Distress Inventory (PDI) was used to determine the level of PD experienced during and immediately after a traumatic event. Results. The highest scores indicative of distress were obtained on the negative emotions subscale, and the lowest on the loss of control and arousal (LCA) subscales. A strong positive correlation was found between the severity of PD and PTSS. Among the PDI subscales, the severity of PTSS was most strongly correlated with LCA, and had the weakest correlation with sense of threat. The optimal PDI cut-off score for predicting elevated PTSS was 19. Conclusions. PD is strongly related to elevated PTSS and serves as a useful tool for screening EMS workers at risk of developing PTSD. Individuals with PDI scores of 19 or higher are good candidates for specialist consultations aimed at detecting and treating elevated PTSS.

Opis:
Theoretical background: In the literature on finance there are findings which examine reasons for the fiscal distress of units of the public sector, including local governments. However, this distress might be differently defined. Therefore, it determines both the approach to identify this phenomenon and the types of explanatory variables. Nevertheless, in the field of the business sector in the econometric models concerning the financial distress the size of the unit is considered. In this case there are also some possibilities to apply the correct proxy variable. This results from the fact that the size of local government might determine its fiscal capability as well as the level and structure of expenditures, which affect fiscal distress. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to examine the influence of the size of the local government on the probability of the decrease of the exposure to the fiscal distress. Research methods: The author reviewed the literature in the field of the fiscal distress and introduced a multi-criteria decision analysis as well as a logistic regression modelling to examine this. The research procedure also required the use of the linear ordering to construct the dependent variable of the fiscal distress in order to analyse the “size effect” on the fiscal distress. Main findings: Fiscal distress of local governments is a core issue, which should be constantly analysed. It depends on the financial, economic, social and even political aspects. To identify exposure to this distress the TOPSIS method can be used. However, the fiscal distress can be affected by the size of the unit, which influences lots of budgetary categories. Due to the specificity of dependent and independent variables in the econometric models the “size effect” might be represented through the level of the population or the assets. Using the ordinal logistic regression in the research, the authors should consider that this effect can differ between the units with the disparate exposure. So, the partial proportional odds models can be required. Thus, the growth of the size of the unit, measured by the population, increases the odds of reaching very low exposure to fiscal distress. Simultaneously, there are some other important issues which should be included in this type of research.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (“SAMSA”) responds to emergency calls from distressed ships. SAMSA, as a coastal authority, operates in terms of the South African maritime regulatory framework and its approach used to be robust. For example, South Africa is the first country to recognize the need to have a tug solely for the purpose of assisting ships in distress. However, close examination of the recent maritime incidents shows that SAMSA’s approach is falling short of keeping up with the ever changing challenges of places of refuge for ships in distress. This paper seeks to critically assess SAMSA’s approach to ships in distress as informed by the South African regulatory framework. The paper will further examine the possible solutions to identified shortcomings.

Opis:
The most important function of a maritime radio communication system called the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is the distress alerting function. Distress alerting is the rapid and successful reporting of a distress incident to a unit, which can provide or co-ordinate assistance. This would be a rescue co-ordination centre (RCC) or another ship in the vicinity. The article presents and evaluates the technical and operational possibilities of the maritime radio systems for a distress alerting. Especially the basic functional requirements and regulations for GMDSS referring to the maritime radio systems for distress alerting, resulting from the provisions of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and Radio Regulations have been described. The article presents the role of the maritime radio systems for a distress alerting in the shipping and GMDSS as well. A current status and analysis of the systems responsible for distress alerting has been made. In this context, the operation, methods and ranges of transmitting and receiving the distress alerts by the INMARSAT system, COSPAS-SARSAT system and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) system have been described. The article also outlines the future of the maritime radio systems for a distress alerting. In this context, the two projects under the name of „E-navigation” and „The modernization of the GMDSS”, currently being implemented in the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by the Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR), have been presented as well.

Opis:
It is widely accepted that a cancer diagnosis is a stressful and often traumatic experience for patients. Stress as a psychological side-effect of diagnosis has been well-researched. However, it is also possible that the life changing and potentially life-threatening aspects of disease may lead to symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including heightened anxiety, intrusive and distressing thoughts, avoidance of reminders of the trauma and sleeping disturbances. These symptoms may be of short duration but studies show that is possible for patients to live with PTSD for years after diagnosis and treatment. Even if not all the criteria for a full PTSD diagnosis are present, subthreshold or subsyndromal PTSD has been shown to cause significant distress and affect the quality of life of breast cancer patients. Given that with earlier diagnoses and ever more effective treatment interventions, the number of women who survive cancer and whose survival intervals are longer, identification, monitoring and treatment of patients living with PTSD becomes ever more important.

Opis:
Introduction. Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS:NICU) by M. Miles et al. has been developed in order to assess the stress experienced by parents of infants being treated in Intensive Care Units. The measurement of parental stress enables the evaluation of nursing care effectiveness, as well as facilitating the determination of the level of progress made by parents in coping with the difficult situation they face. Objectives. The aims of the research include: (1) validation of the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Polish Version and (2) initial assessment of perceptions of parental stress in a group of 151 parents of infants treated in four NICUs in Poland. Materials and method. This quantitative cross-sectional study was performed among 151 parents (129 mothers and 22 fathers) of infants treated in four NICUs in central and eastern Poland. The respondents were asked to complete forms following the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Impact Event Scale – Revised (IES–R),and their demographics, which combined basic medical data along with socio-demographic data of both parents and children. Results. The three sub-scales distinguished on the basis of factor analysis (Infant Appearance, Parental Role Alteration, Sights and Sounds) explain in total 54.89% of variances. Cronbach’s alpha for the entire scale equals 0.92, while as follows for the particular sub-scales: Infant Appearance – 0.92; Parental Role Alteration – 0.86, and Sights and Sounds – 0.78. Conclusions. The Polish version of PSS:NICU is an accurate and reliable tool for the assessment of stress experienced by parents whose infants require treatment in NICUs.
