Opis:
Ebola is a severe, acute viral disease, characterized by the sudden onset of fever, vomiting, and profuse diarrhoea, leading to severe dehydration, haemorrhagic diathesis, significant blood loss, shock, often with a fatal outcome. The disease is transmitted by either direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids of live or deceased infected people. Transmission may also occur by unprotected sexual contact or by direct contact with the blood or body fluids of animals. Before 2013, the maximum number of infected people in a single outbreak of Ebola was 425. This figure was significantly exceeded during the largest wave of Ebola that began in December 2013 in West Africa. The epidemiological situation is being closely monitored by the states of the European Union. The World Health Organization has issued recommendations for travellers to countries affected by the Ebola virus.

Opis:
ObjectivesTo evaluate the effectiveness of safety guidelines in the workplace, the authors analyzed the work-related exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and the source of COVID‑19 infections among healthcare workers (HCWs), together with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).Material and MethodsA cross-sectional prospective study was conducted in tertiary hospitals in the Uusimaa region, Finland, with 1072 volunteers being enrolled in the study from among the HCWs at the Helsinki University Hospital. Overall, 866 (80.8%) HCWs (including 588 nurses, 170 doctors, and 108 laboratory and medical imaging nurses) completed the questionnaire by July 15, 2020, with 52% of the participants taking care of COVID‑19 patients. The participants answered a structured questionnaire regarding their use of PPE, the ability to follow safety guidelines, exposure to COVID‑19, and the source of potential COVID‑19 infections. The participants with COVID‑19 symptoms were tested with the SARS-CoV-2 realtime polymerase chain reaction method. All infected participants were contacted, and their answers were confirmed regarding COVID‑19 exposure.ResultsIn total, 41 (4.7%) participants tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, with 22 (53.6%) of infections being confirmed or likely occupational, and 12 (29.3%) originating from colleagues. In 14 cases (63.6%), occupational infections occurred while using a surgical mask, and all infections originating from patients occurred while using a surgical mask or no mask at all. No occupational infections were found while using an FFP2/3 respirator and following aerosol precautions. The combined odds ratio for working at an intensive care unit, an emergency department, or a ward was 3.4 (95% CI: 1.2–9.2, p = 0.016).ConclusionsA high infection rate was found among HCWs despite safety guidelines. Based on these findings, the authors recommend the use of FFP2/3 respirators in all patient contacts with confirmed or suspected COVID‑19, along with the use of universal masking, also in personnel rooms.

Opis:
Ehrichia canis is an etiologic agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis — usually asymptomatic in early stage of disease. It is a tick−borne disease. The aim our study was to estimate the prevalence of ricketsia in the tick population, that infested dogs in Lower Silesia region during season 2005 by PCR. The study took to consideration of identification of ticks species and possibility of season−influence on appear of infections. Among collected ticks (n=102), 97% represented Ixodes ricinus. Other species infesting dogs were Ixodes hexagonus (n=1) and Hemaphysalis punctata (n=2). All examined ticks were negative in the PCR reaction of Ehrlichia canis. Because of negative results there was no possibility to establish season−influence of appearing ricketsia infections.

Opis:
Despite the considerable progress of medicine, parasitic diseases still pose a great threat to human health and life. Among parasitic diseases, those transmitted by vectors, mainly arthropods, play a particular role. These diseases occur most frequently in the poorest countries and affect a vast part of the human population. They include malaria, babesiosis, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and filariasis. This study presents those vector-transmitted diseases that are responsible for the greatest incidence and mortality of people on a global scale. Attention is focused primarily on diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, flies, Hemiptera and ticks.

Opis:
Med. Pr. 2014;65(3):429–435
In Poland the incidence rate of tuberculosis is higher than the average for countries of the European Union, Norway or Iceland. On the other hand, occupational tuberculosis is still rarely recognized in our country. In this paper we present the first in Poland- to our best knowledge – case of pulmonary manifestation of this disease acquired at work in a funeral director. The recognition of the occupational etiology of the discussed illness gave rise to an array of diagnostic problems and became feasible after a thorough analysis of the patient's history and literature data, which allowed finding the relationship between infection and performed job. We speculated that the transfer of the dead body and handling of cadavers may expel residual air from the lungs of the deceased. Although tuberculosis occurs frequently in the general population, the recognition of work-related cases of this disease is still rare, especially among funeral directors. Med Pr 2014;65(3):429–435

Opis:
Changes in Gregarina typographi Fuchs, 1915 (Eugregarinorida: Gregarinidae) infection levels were studied in a population of the bark beetle Ips typographus (L., 1758) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), which lives in association with Norway spruce. Beetles were repeatedly collected from three logs of trap trees during 2009 and 2010 at one study site in the Czech Republic with a high level of G. typographi infection (seasonal mean of 15.7% in 2009 and 19.8% in 2010). Infection levels did not differ statistically between sexes, logs, and trap trees but did differ among sampling dates. During the beetle reproductive period, the infection levels nearly doubled in 2009 (from 10.7 to 19.8%) and more than tripled in 2010 (from 9.3 to 31.3%). We infer that the continuous increase in the G. typographi infection level within each of the two years resulted from transmission among beetles in nuptial chambers during the May–June reproductive and egg-laying period.

Opis:
Background. This study investigated the association between infection prevention behavior and socio-demographic and other lifestyle factors among the Lithuanian public and private university students. Material and methods. The cross-sectional survey took place from 15 January to 28 February 2021, and a total of 234 students responded to the survey. Survey questions included socio-demographic factors, compliance to hand hygiene, attitude towards vaccination, safe sexual behavior and risky sexual behavior, self-rated health, eating habits, physical activity, and compliance with COVID-19 preventative measures. Independent sample t-test, oneway ANOVA, correlation bivariate, and multiple regression tests were used to analyze the association between different factors. Results. Students with better health showed higher compliance to hand hygiene, but reported lower safe sex practices (p<0.05). Likewise, students with chronic disorders were more skeptical of vaccines (p<0.05). Students reporting healthy eating habits displayed a higher compliance to hand hygiene (p<0.05) and safe sex (p<0.05), while students who were more physically active showed lower confidence in vaccines (p<0.05). Conclusions. This study indicates that significant correlations exist between numerous variables related to socio-demographic and lifestyle factors with infection prevention behavior. Moreover, there is a need to increase the compliance of infection prevention behavior among youth. Hence, more health promotion programs should be implemented focusing on infection prevention behavior in young individuals.
