Opis:
Bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD) is a well characterised lethal autosomal recessive disease that occurs in Holstein cattle. The discovery of this genetic disorder in 1990 by KEHRLI et al. was serendipitous and occurred in conjunction with studies of new methods to prevent mastitis in periparturient dairy cows ( KEHRLI et al. 1992a). In this review article we are attempting to summarise the last 6-year research (1990-1995) covering major aspects of BLAD syndrome, its worldwide prevalence with emphasize on current and future development on BLAD research.

Opis:
This study is based on clinical observations of patient motor-disturbances, measured by PSW (Parotec System for Windows) pedobarographic recorder [1]. The gait regular asymmetry in a data spectrum has been noticed as an independent factor from disease duration and severity. In majority of analysed cases a gravity centre of the body moves towards a left limb, into a heel region. A trajectory of foot gravity centre elongation, its irregularity, a floor-contact time and impulse values increase is also visible. Predominantly on more affected limb. These diagnosis factors allow concluding that the PSW recorder could successfully be used for recognition and quantification of the motor disturbances, illustrating the Parkinson disease progress.

Opis:
Gramatyki takie umożliwiają stworzenie uniwersalnego i informatywnego opisu znaczeniowego przestrzennych struktur naczyń wieńcowych. Wykorzystanie takich opisów semantycznych w zintegrowanych modułach inteligentnych systemów diagnostyki medycznej umożliwia wspomaganie zadań wczesnego wykrywania patologicznych przewężeń tętnic utrudniających przepływ utlenowanej krwi do danego obszaru mięśnia sercowego.
In this paper has been proposed developing the new syntactic - semantic meaning description of spatial coronary arteries structure. Thanks such description will be possible to make essentially steered semantic interpretation of section coronary arteries morphology, what will allow us fast identification and automatisation of lumen structure detection. In this aim has been used graph image languages based on the expansive graph grammars of edNLC type, enabling creation the universal and informative meaning description of spatial coronary arteries structure. Application of such semantic description in the integrated modules of intelligent systems medical diagonosis, supporting the early detection stricture which defect the flow of oxidizing blood to given area of cardiac muscle.

Opis:
The paper presents a new technique for cognitive analysis and recognition of pathological wrist bone lesions. This method uses AI techniques and mathematical linguistics allowing us to automatically evaluate the structure of the said bones, based on palm radiological images. Possibilities of computer interpretation of selected images, based on the methodology of automatic medical image understanding, as introduced by the authors, were created owing to the introduction of an original relational description of individual palm bones. This description was built with the use of graph linguistic formalisms already applied in artificial intelligence. The research described in this paper demonstrates that for the needs of palm bone diagnostics, specialist linguistic tools such as expansive graph grammars and EDT-label graphs are particularly well suited. Defining a graph image language adjusted to the specific features of the scientific problem described here permitted a semantic description of correct palm bone structures. It also enabled the interpretation of images showing some in-born lesions, such as additional bones or acquired lesions such as their incorrect junctions resulting from injuries and synostoses.

Introduction. The most important confirmative diagnostic test for trichinellosis is the presence of the muscle larvae in a tissue biopsy but this direct method has a low sensitivity of light and moderate infections. The aim of presented study was to compare the usefulness of the results obtained by three ELISA procedures for Trichinella spp. diagnosis in human outbreaks. Materials and methods. All sera (cases and controls) were tested for anti-Trichinella antibodies (immunoglobulin G) using commercially available Novatec KIT and two other ELISA procedures based on excretory-secretory (ES) antigens on Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae. The main differences in ELISA procedures were: the protein concentration in antigen, dilution of human serum samples, conjugate and the time of conjugate incubation. Additional differences were noticed in ES antigen preparation procedures as well as in T. spiralis isolates used in these procedures. Serum samples were obtained from 22 symptomatical patients from Poznań region (West Poland), geographic area where human outbreak had occurred. Control serum samples were obtained from 20 patients from an open population from a non endemic trichinellosis area. Results. The results were analyzed in terms of both: statistical and epidemiological point of view. Linear regression analysis and correlations coefficient r between OD values of total 22 patients obtained in three ELISA procedures were positive and high statistically significant. Three ELISA procedures revealed different cut-off values and positivity rates for outbreak. However, the majority of positive samples were found as positive in three procedures, but some of them were positive in two or one procedure only. These individual variability in sera reactivity observed in three ELISA procedures could be very important from epidemiological point of view.

Opis:
Diagnosing of morbid conditions by means of automatic tools supported by computers is a significant and often used element in modern medicine. Some examples of these tools are automatic conclusion-making units of Parotec System for Windows (PSW). In the initial period of PSW system implementation, the units were used for recognition of orthopaedic diseases on the basis of the patient's walk and posture [15,17]. Subsequently, many additional options have been implemented, which have been used for purposes of diagnosing neurological diseases [1,2,3,9,12]. During automatic classification of diseases the additional units use elements of neural networks. The vectors based on normalised diagnostic measures [3] are inputs of the units. The measurements describe a patient's posture condition, his walk and overloads occurring on his feet. The Counter-Propagation (CP), two-layer network has been used in one of the automatic conclusion-making units. During CP network activity, we can see not only supervised but unsupervised learning processes as well. This is a characteristic feature of the CP network. The initial steps of the CP network learning process are very important, because the success of the network training process depends on them to a great extent. Therefore, a new method of weight vector initial values selection was proposed. The efficiency of the method was compared with classical methods. The results were very satisfactory. Owing to the proposed method, the time of the network training process as well as the mean-square error and the classification error was reduced. The research has been carried out using clinical cases of some neurological diseases: Parkinson's Disease, left-lateral hemiparesis and right-lateral hemiparesis after ischemic stroke. The measurements, which were made on a control group of patients without any neurological diseases, were the reference for these diagnostic classes.

The study was based on many experiments of gait characteristics analysis, finally on observations of 117 patients suffering from motor disturbances. Among them were 42 cases with hemiparetic syndrome, mostly after cerebral stroke, 52 cases affected by acute sciatic neuralgia and 23 patients with recognition of Parkinson - disease symptoms. The control group was 16 healthy adults selected from medical staff - examined by pedobarographic equipment - PSW [4]. Based on these observations several classification proposals have been introduced. The majority of works concern gait disturbances investigations for three remarkable neurological diseases. They provide us with new diagnostic techniques based on some gait measures implementation.

The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of Borrelia burgdorferi DNA detection in the blood and urine of patients diagnosed with erythema migrans, and compare the results of PCR-based methods with ELISA methodology. The latter was used to detect serum antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi of the IgM and IgG classes, before and after antibiotic therapy. The study included 86 patients hospitalized in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Neuroinfections in the Medical Academy in Białystok, diagnosed with the erythema migrans phase of Lyme borreliosis. Examinations were carried out twice: the fi rst at the moment of diagnosis (Trial 1), the second after 4 weeks of antibiotic therapy. The study showed that antibiotic therapy in the early phase of borreliosis does not decrease the sensitivity of PCR and that after 4 weeks of therapy (Trial 2), spirochete DNA is still detectable in most patients (45/86). There was no correlation between detectability of spirochete DNA and the presence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi s.l. (assessed by ELISA) during the course of erythema migrans. The largest percentage of positive results in the detection of B. burgdorferi s.l. DNA was observed in patients who simultaneously possessed IgM and IgG antibodies against B. burgdorferi, while the lowest percentage of PCR positive results was among patients with only IgM antibodies.

Opis:
Objective. To investigate a relationship between the etiological factor of external otitis and occurrence of particular signs/symptoms. Design. A special questionnaire was designed and completed by all patients covering personal details, medical history, results of otolaryngological examination and bacteriological and mycological investigations. Subjects. 249 patients of the Outpatient Department of Laryngology at the Regional Hospital in Bełchatów with symptoms of external otitis. For analysis of relationships between particular signs/symptoms and species/genera of microorganisms, statistical tests were used: χ2 test, χ2 test with Yate’s modification, C−Pearson index, and Fisher exact test for very small samples. Results. There is a statistical dependence between discharge, hearing loss, swelling of skin, scant, dried discharge with fetid odour and bacteria isolated from the external ear canal. Similar dependence exists between pain, hearing loss, no smelly discharge or wet, black plug of fetid odour and fungi. Also there is a statistical dependence between pruritus, red skin and grey, fetid discharge and mixed flora. Conclusions. Some of symptoms and signs are connected with definite etiological factors which is important not only for correct diagnosis but also for institution of appropriate and effective treatment. On the basis of some characteristic symptoms and signs it is possible to make a tentative diagnosis as to the etiological pathogen responsible for external otitis.
