The first part of the paper deals with characteristics of classroom interaction as a type of institutional talk in a conversational analytic perspective. Next, the thesis is discussed concerning developing learners' interactional competence to foster learner discursive independence in argumentative discussions in English as a foreign language. Finally, after a short review of dialogic signals, the article presents a preliminary analysis of selected dialogic signals: evaluating reformulations and piggybacking as the ways of achieving reciprocity in argumentative discussions.

Although cohabitation is increasingly common in Poland, it is usually considered a transitional, testing stage that leads to marriage, which constitutes the preferred form of family life in the country. Does it mean that couples who do not choose to marry are perceived as somewhat “worse” than those tying the knot? Using qualitative data from focus group interviews with 69 men and women aged 25–40, I aimed to answer the following questions: What are social perceptions of couples who have already “tested” their relationship, but still live together and refrain from marriage? In particular, what are the motives attributed to such couples and how – if at all – these motives are linked to the quality of the relationships? There were four themes related to such motives identified in the analysed material: (1) the perception of marriage as an unnecessary expense that does not change anything in a relationship, or even makes things worse; (2) fear of an ultimate commitment; (3) uncertainty whether this is the right partner and the resulting low level of commitment in the relationship; (4) rejection of traditional gender roles. Commitment appears central in the analysed discussions suggesting that this concept should constitute an important topic in future studies on unions in Poland.

The article deals with social discussions concerning the risks and benefits of using combined oral contraceptive pills (COCP). The discussions reflect sociological theories of risk, loss of trust in biomedicine, and active lay participation in health choices. The main goal of the qualitative content analysis of six internet discussions from 2006 to 2015 is to identify how former, current, and future users of COCP in the Czech Republic deal with the risks and benefits of this method, the possible alternatives being considered, and how information from these internet discussions influences the choice of method. The main narratives showing reflection of risk in internet discussions about hormonal contraceptives were called: Weighing the risk of taking or not taking COCP, Risk of side effects when using COCP, Risk of “post-pill syndrome,” Sharing information and experience.

Reader-response theory is based on the assumption that a literary work takes place in the mutual relationship between the reader and the text. According to this theory, the meaning is constructed through a transaction between the reader and the text within a particular context. Readers assume multiple roles when responding to a variety of forms of literature. The process of developing responses facilitates active and meaningful reading and increases emotional and intellectual participation in the text, which ultimately provides learners with better comprehension and awareness of the text. The potential value of classroom discussions helps learners to express their emotional reactions, to elicit their responses, to nourish their perspectives for furthering depth of their interpretation, to corroborate their opinions and share their responses for building a social relationship. It is crucial that learners are directed to perform more adequately in response to texts and actively engage in dialogues to pose literal and inferential questions, to explore a range of possible meanings and to foster cognitive development and comprehension.

Facebook discussion threads are often associated with a controversial exchange of views. This study deals with these threads. In the theoretical part the author aims to look at Facebook as a separate internet medium that requires active interaction from its users. He deals with Marshall McLuhan’s and Erving Goffman’s theories and aims to work with the evolution of the social network. In the practical part the author focuses on Facebook discussion threads themselves and on their participants. To cope with his research problem, he employs two qualitative methods, discourse analysis of Facebook’s discussion threads and semi-structured interviews with debaters. He tries to distinguish whether there are any interaction patterns, discourse terminology used by debaters within discussion threads and he also aims to describe Facebook discussion threads from an overall perspective. In semi-structured interviews with Facebook debaters the main goal is to reveal the motivation to present their opinion online and reflection of the social platform itself.

Slight differences between written and spoken texts are not observed only in everyday communication style of the Internet discussions and that is why traditional distinguishing of speech and writing is not always possible.

Opis:
At the basis of “Questions of Boundaries Research Group”, carrying out its activity since November 2006 as an interdepartmental unit of Adam Mickiewicz University, lays the idea of discussion. In this discussion, or rather a coincidence of discussions, due to its dialogic formula, a distinctive question came through, and we decided to put it in the first information about this idea (and also, from the very beginning, at the website: www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl) as its specific, constitutional preamble: ”Is it possible to create a platform for joint questions, talks, lectures and discussions dealing with basic issues, such as image of the world and our own place in it – for people who do not have and do not need to have one shared point of view”. Our starting point is the consciousness of a growing difficulty towards the aim of comprehending the world we experience as a whole. We find ourselves at the point at which simultaneously: - almost all possibilities of a modern scientific research are disclosed (especially technological possibilities), along with their hardly predictable consequences for a human being; – the possibility of a deeper basic understanding of the way the world – and our own life – are given to us, is sparkling through, providing a chance that we will achieve an inventive attitude towards those realities in our civilization which appear to be dangerous or spoiled; – there prevails a difficulty with the underlying intention of any science – to describe the world as a whole. Nevertheless, the desire to perceive the world as a whole has not vanished. It is present even when there comes along a certain skepsis as to the probability of satisfying this desire. We cannot excuse ourselves from attempting to answer the question why is it so. We also should not resign from trying to express this desire. We should realize that, although a common reaction to discomfort  is trying to remove it, namely to harmonize a disrupted view of reality as quickly as possible, it is by no means the only possible solution. It is rather immediate and temporary and, for some fundamental processes of problem solving (investigative as well as existential), it may have a restraining effect. Above all, it means closing to the “unexpected” which has a potential of possibilities in itself. Perhaps that is why, instead of quickly reducing and eliminating inconvenient situations, it is worth “to condensate” them on purpose. In the academic year 2007/2008 Questions of Boundaries Research Group has offered students and PhD’s about a dozen of classes per each semester (http://www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl/ PPG Wiki/Wiki.jsp?page =20072008). Most prominent among them are the series of interdisciplinary lectures: “Xenophobia, Racism and Exclusion (because of Race, Sex and Age)” and “Boundaries of Humanity: Between Human and Animal World” along with “Boundaries of Humanity: Between the World of Human and the World of Machines” – these are delivered by the representatives of many varying disciplines. This year’s research priorities consist of two projects: “Redefinition of the Fundamental Terms of Humanism in the Light of Holocaust” and “Spaces of Community”. Lectures, seminars and classes of Research Group have raised wide interest and, among our other intentions, they begin to play an important role in creating a meeting space for students and PhD’s of various faculties and specialties.

Opis:
In recent years, a number of studies have been conducted with regard to communication strategy training and performance on communicative tasks (Lam, 2009; Nakatani, 2010; Naughton, 2006). This study aims to add to the literature by examining how two strategies, clarifying/confirming and extending a conversation, and two methods of teaching the strategies, affected the interactional sequences and overall group discussion performance of EFL students at a university in Japan. Pre and posttreatment small-group discussions were recorded for assessment, and a stimulated recall interview was administered to determine the participants’ perceptions of their learning and language use. Posttest results reveal that the experimental groups that were taught predetermined phrases aimed at clarifying/confirming and extending a conversation employed such phrases more frequently than the control group. However, this employment of phrases did not lead to higher gains in group discussion skills as the control group enjoyed the largest gains from pre to posttest. The researchers consider the findings in light of previous research, and conclude with recommendations for future research on the topic with special regard to research design.

Opis:
Nowadays, the Internet is a space of exchanging views and conducting discussions characterized by widespread availability and potentially unlimited possibilities for presenting various users’ argumentations (any topic, any form, any content, any place of publication, etc.). Internet users’ activity in the field of conducting discussions in various thematic areas is high, especially in those areas where there are many potential disagreement points, such as politics or morality. This reality implies a number of challenges that need to be met by developers of portals and tools that enable cyberspace users to communicate, especially to exchange arguments. Classic solutions used in existing tools of this kind usually do not have mechanisms (or have them to a very limited extent) focused on the quality of user-created arguments. The purpose of this paper is to present an example approach to creating online discussion platforms based on the developed by the author e-debata solution, which provides mechanisms inspired by argumentation theory, allowing at least partial validation of the arguments presented in Internet discussions and, as a result, enhancing their usefulness.

This research paper considers the avant-garde manifestos and programmatic statements of poets,in the light of the debate on the emancipatory potential of neoavant-garde art. The author shows the need to redefine the notion of artistic autonomy that new art programmes involve. In the first part of the article, the point of origin of the modern understanding of artistic autonomy is reflected on in its two basic formulas: Kantian and Hegelian. The second part evolves an analysis of three examples of contemporary metapoetic statements by Polish poets (Piotr Sommer, Andrzej Sosnowski, Kacper Bartczak). Their neoavant-garde premises of the performative character of the theoretical discussions, and of the artistic elements that connect their theoretical ideas to the actual works of these poets lead us to the conclusion that engaged, activistic poetic practice, concerning he rules directed by the questions of autonomy of art, cannot be judged from the point of view of the Kantian definition of this autonomy, especially if we take the poetical matter of avant-garde provenance into consideration.

Opis:
The article discusses a case study focusing on the students’ task of analyzing expressing opinions in Polish and English TV discussions. The written observation task is performed as a final requirement to receive credit for the course of interaction analysis, during which the second-year students of applied linguistics are introduced to the basic methods of conversation analysis. I use document analysis of students’ discourse to distinguish the main tendencies in performing the task by the students. The aim of the research presented in the paper is assessing the students’ ability to use conversation analysis in observing different ways of expressing opinion in selected Polish and American TV discussions. I especially focus on evaluating the students’ skill of unmotivated looking at the ways of expressing opinions in TV discussions. This phenomenological observation requires suspending the researcher’s personal views and assumptions concerning the meaning of actions in interaction. The main aim of conversation analysis is discovering the meaning of communicative actions from the perspective of a talk participant. If applied appropriately, this kind of observation allows student-researchers to avoid a tendency to rely on stereotypical evaluations in the analysis of interactions.
