    The paper focuses on two types of the 17th century public discourse – of exclusion and tolerance. The research is based on the analysis of the works of Szymon Starowolski (Braterskie napomnienie, Prawdziwe objaśnienie Braterskiego napomnienia) and Samuel Przypkowski (Braterska deklaracyja) which constitute a polemical chain or a series of works combined on the basis of discussion replies. The purpose of the sketch is to characterize the subjects of the discourse, describe the communication strategies used and reconstruct presented attitudes and values. The subject of the discourse of exclusion assumes the approach of a hegemon attempting to discredit the object of the discourse and lead to its isolation. It invokes to insinuation and emotional arguments. The subject of the discourse of tolerance represents an irenic attitude and presents a society based on amicable coexistence, the will of cooperation, respect for law and freedom of conscience.

    The aim of the article is to present the results of the analysis of the contents related to the Global South in language textbooks, which, due to the cultural aspects of teaching a foreign language, are of particular importance in intercultural education. The method of content analysis was used in the study, with inductive and deductive data coding in the Atlas.ti 7 program. The results show the ways of discursive exclusion of the Global South, characterized by one-sidedness and Eurocentrism noticeable in textbooks images of this world region. The collected data made it possible to distinguish such elements of the discourse of exclusion as victimization (linking the image of the Global South with various problems), exoticization (descriptions of the Global South in the context of traditional rituals or the richness of nature) and incapacitation (absence of representatives of the Global South in the texts or presenting them as passive beneficiaries of external aid). Despite the potential of shaping intercultural competences that language education brings, in the aspect of the Global South, it seems necessary to modify the content of textbooks in the direction of diversity, equal treatment of cultures, getting rid of the sense of superiority and ethnocentric attitudes.
    Celem artykułu jest prezentacja wyników analizy przekazów dotyczących globalnego Południa w podręcznikach językowych, które, ze względu na kulturowe aspekty nauczania języka obcego, mają szczególne znaczenie w edukacji międzykulturowej. W badaniu zastosowano metodę analizy treści, z kodowaniem danych metodą indukcyjną i dedukcyjną w programie Atlas.ti 7. Przedstawione rezultaty analizy pokazują sposoby dyskursywnego wykluczania globalnego Południa, co sprawia, że książkowy wizerunek opisywanego regionu świata cechuje jednostronność i europocentryzm. Zgromadzone dane pozwoliły na wyodrębnienie takich elementów dyskursu wykluczenia jak wiktymizacja (łączenie wizerunku globalnego Południa z różnorodnymi problemami), egzotyzacja (opisy globalnego Południa w kontekście tradycyjnych obrzędów lub bogactwa natury) oraz ubezwłasnowolnienie (nieobecność w tekstach reprezentantów globalnego Południa lub prezentowanie ich jako biernych beneficjentów pomocy udzielanej z zewnątrz). Pomimo potencjału kształtowania kompetencji międzykulturowych, jaki niesie ze sobą edukacja językowa, w badanym aspekcie konieczna wydaje się modyfikacja treści podręczników w kierunku zróżnicowania wizerunku globalnego Południa, równego traktowania kultur, wyzbycia się poczucia wyższości i postaw etnocentrycznych w prezentowanych przekazach.

    Opis:
    This article tries to diagnose possibilities and limitations of the online media as a digital agora — a virtual space for citizens’ deliberation which could potentially strengthen and enhance democracy in Poland, as well as in other Central European countries. Considering the key features of the public sphere indicated by Habermas (inclusiveness, rationality, autonomy, lack of hierarchy), the analysis focuses on three problem areas. The first one includes the impact of digital exclusion upon availability of the digital public sphere for citizens. The second part of the study is devoted to rationality and interactivity of online discourse. The last part of the analysis addresses the impact of the relative anonymity of online communication on the equality and autonomy of citizens’ deliberation on the internet.

    Individuals and groups can experience different forms of social exclusion across multiple domains of social life. Owing to its multivariate nature, a generalized approach to studying exclusion has been adopted in empirical work within the field of social psychology. As such, the relational needs thwarted by various forms of exclusion tend to be accounted for by the generalized construct, the need to belong. To increase the specification of these aspects in exclusion research, the interdisciplinary approach of critical discourse analysis and related analytic tools, such as the discursive construction of identity, are used to perform a contextual and systemic analyses of the relational needs implicated in conditions of everyday exclusion. In the discourse of a sample population in Beirut, Lebanon, we aimed to show how distinct relational needs such as acceptance and fitting in can be disentangled from one another, and from the term belonging, as a higher-order concept, disambiguated in natural language. Semi- structured interviews conducted using the language of belonging methodology involved images of socio-political importance as triggers for talk that generated rich data for critical discourse analysis. This resulted in a contextual analysis of sectarianism as exclusionary and a thematic analysis of other experiences of exclusion linked to gentrification, geopolitical division and globalization. Our findings suggest that, as hypothesised, individuals employ distinct terminology when alluding to different experiences of exclusion. This illustrates the benefits of interdisciplinary methods in accounting for social phenomena more fully, and highlights the need for increased specification of generalized constructs in future empirical work on social exclusion in social psychology.

    The main issue of the article is the process of ideologization of the discourse on modern art. The author analyses media statements following the burning down of Julita Wójcik’s art installation “Tęcza” in Warsaw. The dispute mentioned did not focus on the aesthetic judgements, but on the symbolic value of the work. Built to symbolize the tolerance for homosexuals, the installation prompted intense aggression (both physical and verbal) among representatives of the extreme right. The author juxtaposes statements coming from both sides of the conflict. What merits particular attention here is the strategy of hybridization of discourses that are mutually exclusive (discourse of tolerance and discourse of exclusion). It aims at devaluing the discourse of tolerance and “softening” the negative image of the discourse of exclusion.

    In the postmodern period we are dealing with many manifestations of marginaliza-tion, the understanding of which requires the use of a different language and different categories than those employed during the high phase of modernity. Giving an axiological meaning to the manifestations of marginalization in art is a comparatively recent phenomenon, a product of modernity. Divisions of art before and after its autonomization occur according to different rules. The article recounts the views of J. Habermas, C. Greenberg, and J. F. Lyotard on the central and the marginal in art, and it asks the question about their usefulness today in analyzing the phenomena of the marginal. To understand the ongoing paradigmatic change it might be advisable to consider the reflections of D. Mersch, who points out the ambivalent status of the concept of art and the avant-garde, which permits us to vindicate other concepts, for example that of the rearguard (arrière-garde). The age of modernity produced and already partly overcame the totalizing discourse on art, which condemned whole areas of artistic activity to exclusion. The size of the margins seen from this perspective turns out to be variable and dynamic, which calls into question the practice of giving an axiological meaning to the concept. The arguments for the change in thinking that take place in late modernity is the positive appreciation of events and individual experiences, the phenomena of the ephemeral as understood by G. Böhme, and the return to the idea of the whole built on different foundations.
    W epoce ponowoczesnej mamy do czynienia z wieloma przejawami marginalizacji, których zrozumienie domaga się użycia innego języka i innych kategorii niż w latach rozkwitu moder-nizmu. Nadanie aksjologicznego znaczenie przejawom marginalności w sztuce jest zjawiskiem stosunkowo młodym i jest wytworem modernizmu. Podziały w sztuce przed jej autonomizacją i po jej przekroczeniu przebiegają według innych zasad. W tekście przypomniano poglądy J. Habermasa, C. Greenberga, J.F. Lyotarda na temat tego, co w sztuce centralne i marginalne, by następnie zadać pytanie o ich przydatność do analizy zjawisk marginalności obecnie. Do zrozumienia dokonującej się zmiany paradygmatycznej pomocne być mogą refleksje D. Mer-scha, który zwraca uwagę na ambiwalentny status pojęcia sztuki i pojęcia awangardy, co po-zwala rehabilitować inne kategorie, jak na przykład pojęcie ariregrady. Epoka modernizmu wytworzyła i częściowo już przezwyciężyła totalizujące dyskursy o sztuce, które skazywały na wykluczenie całe obszary działalności artystycznej. Obszar marginesów widziany z tej per-spektywy okazuje się zmienny i dynamiczny, co stawia pod znakiem zapytania nadawanie znaczenia aksjologicznego pojęciu marginesów. Argumentami za dokonującą się zmianą w myś-leniu w okresie późnej nowoczesności jest pozytywne dowartościowanie zdarzeń i doświad-czeń jednostkowych, zjawisk efemeryczności, jak u G. Böhme, a także powrót do zbudowanej na innych podstawach idei całości.
