Opis:
Since about 20 years linguists attempt to apply the grammaticalisation concept to the description of pragmatic phenomena. In this context some linguists speak about ‘pragmatisation’ – a kind of language change, which concerns the linguistic codification of certain pragmatic contents. The term ‘pragmatisation’ suggests a new process, which runs in opposite direction to the development of grammatical elements. Irrespective of how we define the relation between both processes, this means always a reinterpretation (mostly extention) of the grammaticalisation concept. The present article focus on the question whether such attempts indeed result in a new insight into development of pragmatic units, or lead to terminological confusion by different terming already well described linguistic mechanisms.

The starting hypothesis of the article is that the discursive operators of Spanish have not been enabled by grammaticalization processes identical to those of other grammatical components (such as verbal or nominal morphemes or prepositions and conjunctions), since there has been no reduction in the functional scope nor a total bleaching, so that its link with the original lexical items has not disappeared. The consequence is that markers are not integrated into paradigms as closed as grammatical paradigms and both their obsolescence and their renewal, therefore, follow similar patterns to what happens in the evolution of the lexicon. This hypothesis is tried to verify in the article by means of the examination of some discursive markers that, having been used diachronically in Spanish, have been abandoned ina relatively short time.

The present study aims to investigate the use of discourse markers (DMs) in non-native (Croatian) EFL teachers´ talk with primary and secondary school students. The study concentrates on the occurrences and frequencies of DMs, but it also provides an account of the function distribution of the three most frequently used DMs (ok, so, and). The quantitative and qualitative analyses of the recorded transcriptions reveal that the teachers use a variety of DMs, almost exclusively the ones typical of classroom management and classroom discourse organization, with no significant differences in the patterns of DM use with the primary and secondary school students. The DMs fulfill a number of structural and interpersonal functions mainly aimed at providing coherent and stimulating classroom discourse. The findings of this study might contribute to raising awareness of the diversified functions of DMs, which could facilitate non-native EFL teachers´ overall lesson organization and structuring of particular teaching segments.

From a theoretical point of view, this paper offers a new framework for the analysis of discourse markers: a pragmatic-perceptive model that emphasizes the point of the communication process in which such particles become more relevant. Furthermore, this approach tries to give an account of the modal expressions (attenuators and intensifiers) that speakers use in oral speech. The quotients of absolute and relative frequency with regard to the use of textual, interactive and enunciative markers - focused on the message, the addressee and the addresser respectively - are compared in two samples of 20 subjects with typical development and other 20 with Asperger syndrome. The general results of this research suggest that these latter speakers display a suitable command of textual markers, whereas they overexploit the enunciative ones in conversation.

Opis:
The paper provides a comparative analysis of the syntax, semantics and pragmatics of two Hungarian particles with the same logical core meaning also: is and szintén. The analysis yields important theoretical implications since it demonstrates how two particles sharing the same logical-propositional/truth-functional core meaning can expand into two different markers. In discourse, is acts as an intensional/metacognitive pragmatic marker in the sense as proposed by Aijmer et al. (2006), while szintén functions as a coherence-signaling discourse marker. The two particles share certain syntactic-semantic properties: neither of them can be followed by a topic, they both have distributive meaning, and both of them can pertain to the noun phrase that they immediately follow, as well as to ordered n-tuples of noun phrases. However, there are also syntactic and pragmasemantic differences between them. Namely, their ordered n-tuples have different word orders; is can function as a pragmatic marker while szintén cannot; szintén can appear as a separate clause, while is cannot (this is presumably related to the fact that szintén can be stressed, while is is obligatorily unstressed); and finally, szintén can have a peculiar discourse-preserving function. We explain the syntactic differences between the two particles using the partial spell-out technique of minimalist generative syntacticians (first applied to Hungarian by Surányi 2009), and the Cinque-hierarchy-based approach to Hungarian sentence- and predicate-adverbials (Surányi 2008). We account for the pragmasemantic properties of the pragmatic-marker variant of is in the formal representational dynamic theory of interpretation called ReALIS, already presented in the LingBaW series (Alberti et al. 2016, Kleiber and Alberti 2017, Viszket et al. 2019).

Opis:
The paper investigates utterances which combine imperative and interrogative elements in Hungarian. We intend to explore the scope of the hypothesis that the pragmatico-semantic content of mixed-type sentences can be obtained compositionally. We present four types of interrogative imperative. The imperative factor is indicated by subjunctive morphology on the verb. The interrogative character is represented by (1) rise-fall intonation which marks polar questions, (2) the discourse marker ugye expressing bias, (3) the particle vajon expressing self-reflection or hesitation, and (4) wavy intonation which indicates surprise. We claim that such sentences are primarily questions with their main function being ‘request for instruction’. For the analysis, we take a formal pragmatico-semantic point of view. Our goal is to demonstrate how these sentences can be analyzed compositionally within a belief–desire–intention frame. We apply the formal dynamic discourse- and mind-representation theory ReALIS. We have found that the pragmatico-semantic content (intensional profile) of each type can be constructed via using two formal operations: concatenation and pragmasemantic blending. The composition produces the required output, namely that the interrogation / bias / speculation / surprise which pertains to an eventuality in the case of a simple question, pertains to the “commanding” of this eventuality in the case of interrogative imperatives.

We describe an exploratory study carried out within the University of Milan, Department of English the aim of which was to analyse features of the spoken English of first-year Modern Languages undergraduates. We compiled a learner corpus, the “Role Play” corpus, which consisted of 69 role-play interactions in English carried out by first-year students at B1+-B2 levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference. The analysis focused on the students’ use of two features of spoken English grammar, tails and the discourse markers ‘yes’ and ‘yeah’. Instances of these features from the data were compared with examples of British native speaker, learner and Italian native speaker usage. Preliminary findings pointed to the role of the students’ first language, L2 proficiency and specific task features in the range and frequency of these phenomena as well as in the functions they deployed in the spoken discourse of the informants.

The article presents Polish approximators with different formal properties as an illustration of Jadwiga Wajszczuk’s theory of metatextual expression classification. These are former prepositions, pronouns, and qualitative adjectives, which have passed from the object to the non-object level of language (the process of grammaticalization), changing their grammatical and semantic features. Although in Wajszczuk’s classification approximators are classified as metapredicative operators, some of them show features of meta-operators, whereas others are classified somewhere between metatext and object vocabulary.

Opis:
The paper offers such description of some imperative-like sentence types in potential well-formed Hungarian utterances which includes a parallel representation of the linguistically encoded intensional profiles of the sentence types and actual information states in potential interlocutors’ minds. In our representational dynamic pragmasemantics framework ReALIS, we demonstrate the intensional profiles of the five basic and two “fine-tuned” sentence types as members of a system enabling addressers’ of utterances to express their beliefs, desires and intentions concerning the propositional content of the given utterances as well as the addressees’ and other people’s certain beliefs, desires and intentions (concerning the propositional content, too, or each other’s thoughts). We also provide “case studies” in which actual beliefs, desires and intentions in potential interlocutors’ minds are compared to the linguistically encoded intensional profiles of Hungarian imperative-like sentence types. In this context, the listener’s task is to calculate the speaker’s intentions (and hidden motives) on the basis of the mismatches that this comparison reveals. The paper concludes with an insight into our attempts to model the mind of individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This latter subproject is relevant since our framework provides solutions to pragmaticosemantic phenomena “at the cost” of undertaking the complex task of actually representing the structure of the human mind itself – which is not impossible but requires an adequate decision of the level of abstraction and the components to be used.

Opis:
In contrast to written language, spoken utterances evince a much higher incidence of deictics, indefinite and pseudo-demonstrative pronouns, contact particles (phatic expressions), specific conjunctions and other connectives, interjections, fillers and hesitation sounds. Corpus-based data should make it possible to attempt a new typology of such expressions (of a broad category of “discourse markers”), independent of the traditional categorization of the parts of speech. The research of spoken Czech syntax must take into account these groups of lexical means that are innate to spoken discourse, i.e. this important area where lexis and syntax meet. Such words as the Czech jako, teda, jakoe, jakoby seem to be semantically vague or empty, but they have a special effect on the connectedness and cohesion of spoken discourse. Moreover, the syntax of spoken discourse has to be investigated in terms of its dialogic and processual nature, inevitably respecting the relationships between utterances and dialogue turns; that is why special attention must be given to “small words” employed at the beginning or end of various types of turns. Their participation in the turn-taking mechanismus, as well as other functions, demonstrates that the “small words” in most cases cannot be regarded as redundant expressions, and that they contribute to the style of spoken discourse.

Opis:
The article analyzes differences in the description of discourse relations in corpus research, in particular with the reference to the use of discourse markers – expressions that tie together subsequent fragments of the text and provide information about the nature of these relations. The text presents three concepts of the description of explicitness and implicitness of the content: Rhetorical Structure Theory, Penn Discourse Treebank and the author’s original proposal and indicates the consequences of each solution. The analysis of relations with particles as metatexual expressions defined in accordance with The Nest Dictionary of Polish reveals the possibility of expressing explicitness as a representation of elements of informational structure shaped by the use of a given particle, and implicitness as a lack of representation of certain elements of this type.
W niniejszym artykule zostały poddane analizie różnice w opisie powiązań tekstowych (relacji dyskursywnych) w badaniach korpusowych, w szczególności w odniesieniu do kwestii użycia ustanawiających je markerów dyskursywnych – wyrażeń wiążących ze sobą kolejne fragmenty tekstu i niosących informacje o charakterze tych powiązań. Tekst przedstawia trzy koncepcje opisu eksplicytności i implicytności przekazu treści: Rhetorical Structure Theory, Penn Discourse Treebank i propozycję autorską oraz wskazuje konsekwencje poszczególnych rozwiązań. Analiza relacji z partykułami jako wyrażeniami metatekstowymi zdefiniowanymi zgodnie ze „Słownikiem gniazdowym partykuł polskich”, przeprowadzona na potrzeby korpusu polskiego ujawnia możliwość ujęcia eksplicytności jako obecności w tekście reprezentacji elementów struktury informacyjnej ukształtowanej przez użycie danej partykuły, a implicytności jako braku reprezentacji pewnych elementów tego typu.

The subject-matter of the analysis presented in the paper are Polish discourse and pragmatic markers homographic with adverbial participle forms, such as e.g. nie mówiąc o_(to say nothing of_, let alone_), nie wspominając o_ (not to mention_), nie wytykając_ (not to mention names), nie licząc (besides), nie ukrywając (not denying). The objective of the research was to determine semantic-syntactic changes accompanying the process of lexicalizalization / delexicalization and grammaticalization of expressions in question along with indicating semantic features of the verbs which participle forms are subject to this process. The role of the generalized conversational implicature in the process of interpreting the utterances with expressions in question was also taken into consideration.

Intended as a follow-up to Part 1 of the study focusing on the use of I mean in police interview data, Part 2 of the analysis offers insight into the recruitment of the related marker you know by the interviewers and the interviewees, respectively. In particular, acknowledging that the primary function of you know is that of “inviting addressee inferences” (Jucker, Smith 1998) and in agreement with the categorisation of functions proposed by Fox Tree and Schrock (2002), the paper reveals how you know is deployed for interpersonal, turn management, repairing, monitoring and organising purposes. To this end, it focuses on the syntactic behaviour of you know and examines the patterns of use linked to individual interview participants. What is more, given the potential of you know to invite addressee feedback, the analysis also looks at listener responses to you know and you know-introduced ideas, revealing at the same time the linguistic coding of power asymmetry in institutional interaction. In sum, Part 1 and Part 2 of the study highlight the subjective and intersubjective meanings conveyed by the markers I mean and you know in police interviews and draw attention to the contribution that pragmatic marker research can make to court and police interpreting practice.

Drawing on interactional approaches to comment clauses (Stenström 1994; Povolná 2010), the paper reveals the discourse functions of I mean (Part 1) and you know (Part 2) in the context of police interviews. More specifically, taking into account the socio-pragmatic setting of police-suspect interaction, it highlights the context-dependence and the multifunctionality of these markers based on data from two police interview transcripts. Thus, following the spirit of the study by Fox Tree and Schrock (2002), Part 1 of the analysis demonstrates that while the primary role of I mean is that of “forewarning upcoming adjustments” (Schiffrin 1987), the marker performs interpersonal, turn management, repairing, monitoring and organizing functions. This being the case, the study examines the potential of I meanm to modify the ongoing interaction and stresses its contribution to the coherence of the interviewees’ narratives. Attention is also drawn to the syntactic environment in which I mean occurs as well as to listener responses to I mean and I mean-introduced ideas. Finally, the discussion touches upon the issue of power relations and shows the role which I mean plays in the linguistic manifestation of power in an institutional setting.
