Jan Joachim Tarło belonged to a family whose three members were bishops of Poznań in the first half of the 18th century. Jan Joachim was an alumnus of Jesuit schools and during his sojourn there joined the Society of Jesus which he left in 1689, passing into the ranks of diocesan clergy. In December 1718 he was granted papal provision to the bishopric in Kiev and remained in office until 1723 when he was transferred to the office of bishop of Poznań which he fulfilled for nine years until his death on 13 August 1732. He died in Vienna on his return from a journey to Rome.His book of pontifical activities for the years 1719-1731 survives till the present day and is stored at the Archdiocesan Archive in Poznań (catalogue number ASO 7). The book is divided into sections in which the following types of activities are recorded: ordinations of various degrees including presbiterate and episcopate, blessing of cornerstones, consecration and blessing of churches, consecration of permanent altars and portative stones, blessing of church bells, consecrations of the holy oils.From the records in the book it follows that during his ministry as bishop of Kiev, Tarło stayed in the Cracow diocese and discharged his duties there. Interestingly, there is no evidence of his performing any official acts in the area of the Kiev diocese, which must have been connected with the fact that already by then a great part of its territory (the bishopric of Kiev included) lay within the borders of the Russian Empire, whereas the part that remained in the Kingdom of Poland encompassed just a few parish churches.

Kapituła Katedralna Elbląska została utworzona 25 listopada 1992 r. Instalacja kanoników miała miejsce dopiero 25 marca 1993 r. Artukuł prezentuje ćwierćwiecze tej kapituły na tle dziejów kapituł katedralnych i kolegiackich w regionie Polski północno-wschodniej (matropolia gdańska i warmińska). Wiele miejsca poświęcono liczebności kapituł i wykształceniu kanoników.
The Cathedral Chapter in Elbląg was established on the 25th November 1992. The installation of canons did not take place until 25th March 1993. The article presents the quarter-century of this chapter against the history of cathedral and collegiate chapters in the North-Eastern Poland region (Gdańsk and the metropolis of Warmia). Much space was devoted tothe numerous chapters and to the education of canons.

In 1939 the Soviet army occupied Wołyń, devastating there the structures of Catholic Church. A lot of priests from the sites of the pre-war diocese of Lutsk arrived to the diocese of Warmia. Between 1945 and 1987 eight from those priests were staying in Elbląg. Two of them, Wacław Hipsz and Aleksander Iwanicki had a big influence on the social-religious life in post-war Elbląg.

The aim of this article is to present the edition of the statutes of the chapters of Vilnius and Samogitia authored by Wioletta Pawlikowska-Butterwick and Liudas Jovaiša. The presentation is preceded by a description of the history of both dioceses and remarks on the role of statutes as the source of the particular law of both chapters. Some space was devoted to the authors of the statutes and related issues. The editorial basis and the critical apparatus were discussed. Finally, attention was drawn to the illustrations accompanying the edition.

The following article focuses on the territorial analysis of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin from 1790 to the foundation of the diocese of Lublin by Pope Pius VII in the papal bull on 23 September 1805. The territorial structure of this diocese was formed from the two bigger and two smaller church administrative units, as in 1790 it encompassed some territory which belonged to the Metropolis of Lvov-the diocese of Chełm (three deaneries), as well as most of the Archdeanery of Lublin, which belonged to the diocese of Kraków, the Metropolis of Gniezno(apart from the deanery of Solec). From the latter diocese and metropolis, the deanery of Stężyca (from the deanery of Kielce) and the deanery of Urzędów (from the archdeanery of Zawichost) were also incorporated to the diocese of Chełm and Lublin. Presenting the particular parts of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin created in 1790, the author also describes the years before its foundation, because the analysis of the territorial structures both the diocese of Chełm- erected in 14 the century- and the archdeanery of Lublin-created in 12th century-covers even the beginnings of the 14th century. In addition, in this article an attempt has been made to explain the diocese name controversy –created in 1790- and the titles of its first ordinary bishops: Maciej Garnysz and Wojciech Skarszewski. The boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin underwent some changes over time due to the partitions of Poland. That is why the following article is accompanied by a few maps, which can help to illustrate each and every modification to the boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin and to show its parts along with the marked capitals of the deaneries.

This article presents actual missionary involvement of the diocese of Tarnów in the context of the 225th anniversary of its existence. For 38 years, Catholic missionaries from the diocese of Tarnow have been traveling the globe educating other cultures about the Christian faith as well as organising everything needed for the improvement of people’s spiritual and physical lives. So, missionary activities have two dimensions – spiritual and material. The bishop’s role, as the ruler and centre of unity in the diocesan apostolate, is to promote missionary activity, to direct it and to coordinate it, but always in such a way that the zeal and spontaneity of those who share in the work may be preserved and fostered. The missionary activities in the diocese of Tarnow have been strongly supported by the bishops: Jerzy Ablewicz, Józef Życiński and Wiktor Skworc, who have sent 118 priests to the three continents. The Tarnow missionary work is a great contribution to the evangelization of the countries in Africa, South America and, more recently, in Asia (mostly Kazakhstan). This commitment has been marked by the seal of martyrdom by one of the priest – Fr. Jan Czuba who was murdered in the Republic of Congo in 1998. Currently, the Diocesan Missionary Agency has sent 46 priests as missionaries: 14 to Africa, 27 to Latin America and 5 to Kazakhstan. Apostolic activity is organized not only by priests, but also by lay missionaries: one in Cameroon, two in the Central African Republic and additionally two volunteers.

Opis:
Canonical visitation of the parish as a form of implementation of the episcopal office is the momentous duty of every diocesan bishop. In the light of tradition reveals itself as one of the oldest institutions through which the shepherd of the diocese maintains direct contact with both clergy and laity. Because of the great pastoral significance of the visit as early as the fourth century synods ordered that the bishops during, taught and the Sacraments, a turning point in reviving this form of episcopal ministry had the Council of Trent whitch visits treated as an act preparatory to the diocesan synod. The Second Vatican Council referring to the biblical tradition and described the office of bishop as a “pastoral” and episcopal ministry as a “spiritual governance”. Noting that the territory of the diocese and its population should be such that the bishop, though he had to help others, he could personally act as bishop, created in this way, the fundamental conditions to give a canonical parish visitation clearly pastoral character. The last part of the article shows the extent to which the pastoral dimension of the mission of the diocesan bishop determines the practice of the canonical visitation of the Archdiocese of Warmia.

The article focuses on the establishment, fonds and activity of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów. The Archive in Rzeszów plays an important role. Its purpose is to protect, collect, organise, permanently store the archival materials and make them available. The Diocese of Rzeszów was established by John Paul II in his bull Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus of 25 March 1992. The Diocesian Archive in Rzeszów is a separate scientifi c and cultural institution established by the Bishop of Rzeszów, Kazimierz Górny. It is located at the seat of Diocesian Curia in Rzeszów at Castle Street 4. In the years 1992-1999 the Rev. Dr Stanisław Nabywaniec was responsible for organizing the Archive. In 1999 this task was assigned to the Rev. dr Andrzej Motyka, who was also appointed the Diocesan Archive Director. Soon, the statute and the rules of the Archive were formulated, the structure was established and it became the basis for organising the archival materials. The materials have been available since 2003. The article presents the role of the historical archive in the diocese, the origins of the Diocese of Rzeszów, the aims and tasks of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów. Then, it focuses on the statute, the rules and organization of the Archive. A significant element of the article is the collection of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów (the collection structure) which contains 35 fonds. The final part shows the details about church archives, where we can fi nd archival materials relating to the current area of the Diocese of Rzeszów, which was formed from parts of the Diocese of Przemyśl and Tarnów. Previously, this area was the part of the Metropolis of Lvov and Krakow. The paper also provides the list of archives helpful to the researchers of history of the mentioned area: the Archive of the Metropolitan Curia in Krakow, the Archive of the Cathedral Chapter of Krakow, Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak Archive, the Archdiocesan Archive of Latin Rite in Przemyśl, the Archive of the Cathedral Chapter of Przemyśl, the Archive of Cathedral Chapter of Sandomierz and the Archive of the Diocese of Tarnów. The article contains the current contact details for these institutions, directors, opening hours, and the list of guides and articles about fonds. The paper is the first comprehensive study of the Diocesan Archive in Rzeszów as it has been not presented in the previous studies of the Archives of the Catholic Church in Poland.

The Diocese of Ełk was established in 1992 as a major change in the structure of the Church in Poland. It connects the land belonging in the past to various forms of the Polish state and the German state, as well as the Russian state. As a result of these conditions, the parishes of the Roman Catholic Church in this area have arisen in different circumstances and have distinct traditions. Parishes are currently experiencing similar problems. Within the Diocese of Ełk there was an increase in the number of parishes and the process of unifying the way they functioned.

Opis:
Development and organization of the Włocławek Diocese’s judiciary are closely linked to transformations and changes in organization and territory of the Włocławek Diocese, initially named Kruszwica Diocese (till 1123), Kujawy-Pomerania (1123-1818), Kujawy-Kalisz (1818-1925) and finally Włocławek (since 1925). The beginnings of the Włocławek oficjalat (court) date back to the 13th century. It supervised the Kujawy part of the diocese. In 1918 it transformed into the Włocławek Bishop Court. The Włocławek Diocese should be identified as the first one in Poland which since 1289 has had a foralny oficjalat (district court) for the Pomeranian section of the diocese, and later other district oficjalat (court) in Bydgoszcz, Wieluń, Piotrków Trybunalski and Kalisz, which depended on changes in the diocese’s borders. The Pomeranian oficjalat (court), initially a foralny (district) one, in 15th century transformed into a general one, and after the borders’ change in 1818 there were two general oficjalaty (courts): the Włocławek one and the Kalisz one.he final changes in the organization of the judiciary in the Włocławek diocese were caused by introduction of the Canon Law Code from 1917 and reorganization of the administrative division of the diocese in 1925. These changes resulted in one tribunal operating in the Włocławek Diocese, which spreads its jurisdiction on the entire diocese.

Rubrycele (directorium, ordo) i schematyzmy (elenchus) diecezji żmudzkiej przechowywane w Archiwum Diecezjalnym w Kielcach zawierają bardzo dużo ważnego materiału źródłowego co do administracji i organizacji diecezji, kleru diecezjalnego i wiernych, także są pośrednim dowodem na trudności w funkcjonowaniu Kościoła katolickiego na ziemiach zabranych i przyłączonych do Rosji w XIX, i na pocz. XX w. W ADK znajduje się 30 takich druków z lat 1853-1914. Rubrycele podają terminy świąt w kalendarzu liturgicznym, zaś schematyzmy osoby i instytucje ogólnokościelne, władze nadrzędne i instytucje diecezjalne, organizację terytorialną i personalną, dane demograficzne, zakony, bardzo cenne katalogi biskupów żmudzkich od 1415 r. Całość została wzbogacona o obszerny zarys historyczny diecezji, od jej erygowania na soborze w Konstancji, do pocz. XX w.
Directoria (directorium, ordo) and schematisms (elenchus) of the Diocese of Żmudź kept in the Diocesan Archives in Kielce contain a great deal of important source material concerning the administration and organisation of the diocese as well as diocesan clergy and believers They also constitute an indirect proof of difficulties in the functioning of the Catholic Church on the territories appropriated and incorporated to Russia in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The Archives in Kielce hold 30 such prints from the years 1853-1914. Directoria provide the dates of holy days in the liturgical calendar, while schematisms list church people and institutions, church authorities and diocesan institutions, territorial and personal organisation, demographic data, monasteries, valuable catalogues of the bishops of Żmudź since 1415. The whole was enriched with an extensive historical outline of the diocese from its erection during the Council of Constance to the beginnings of the 20th century.

Kościół parafialny pw. Narodzenia Najświętszej Panny Marii wzniesiony na miejscu wzmiankowanej w 1738 roku drewnianej kaplicy. Parafia erygowana w 1778 roku przez Michała Jerzego Poniatowskiego, biskupa płockiego, staraniem Kazimierza Krasińskiego. Kościół drewniany wzniesiony został w 1781 roku, kolejny, również drewniany, w około 1870 roku, zastąpiony murowanym z okresu 1910–1914, według projektu Juliusza Dzierżanowskiego i Jarosława Mariana Wojciechowskiego. Zbudowany w stylu neogotyckim, murowany z cegły, halowy, trzynawowy z transeptem, z wielobocznie zamkniętym prezbiterium i z dwiema wieżami. W ołtarzu głównym obraz Matki Boskiej ze śpiącym Dzieciątkiem i św. Janem Chrzcicielem z pierwszej połowy XVIII wieku.
Parish Church of the Nativity of St. Mary was built in 1738 in a place of wooden chapel. Parish erected in 1778 by Michael George Poniatowski, Bishop of Plock, thanks to the efforts of Kazimierz Krasinski. The wooden church built in 1781 and another also timber in approx. 1870 was replaced a brick from the period 1910 to 1914, according to the design of Julius Dzierżanowski and Jaroslaw Marian Wojciechowski. It was built in neo-Gothic style as brick, hall, three-aisles with transept, a closed side prosbytery and two towers. In the main altar there is an image of the Virgin with sleeping Child and Saint John the Baptist from the XVIII century.

The aim of the study was to summarize the activity of the journal of the diocese of Ełk during the period 1999-2018 and to outline the development plan related to the reform (2018). The initiation of the project in the form of a scientific journal has created opportunities for the development and publishing of research results carried out by scientists mainly belonging to the diocese of Ełk. Many of them used this opportunity. Sharing the results of our own scientific research was at the same time the propagation of the journal and the environment creating it. The considerable scientific output published in the “Studia Ełckie” in a permanent way inscribed in shaping the scientific awareness of the north-eastern Poland. The presentation of the origins and development of the journal turned out to be difficult as long as there are no detailed written sources. It must be admitted that the history of this periodical, although not too long, is quite rich in various transformations. We should appreciate the effort of not only hundreds of authors and reviewers who co-created the magazine, but also those who, through their commitment and dedication, took care of its shape and development.

Diecezja sandomierska została erygowana przez papieża Piusa VII 30 czerwca 1818 roku na mocy bulli Ex imposita nobis. Już w dwa lata później wydana została pierwsza rubrycela. Przez 174 lata (do czasu reorganizacji diecezji na mocy bulli papieża Jana Pawła II z 25 marca 1992 roku Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus) publikowano ją pod różnymi tytułami: Elenchus, Directorium, Consignatio, Cathalogus, Ordo divini officii, Kalendarz liturgiczny diecezji sandomierskiej. Dołączone do rubryceli spisy parafii i duchowieństwa zaczęły wychodzić po II wojnie światowej w postaci odrębnych wydawnictw, nosząc tytuły: Rocznik Diecezji Sandomierskiej, Skrócony Rocznik Diecezji Sandomierskiej, Skrócony Katalog Diecezji Sandomierskiej, Spis parafii i duchowieństwa diecezji Sandomierskiej. Rubrycele, publikowane z polecenia biskupa sandomierskiego, ukazywały się w rocznych odstępach czasu, aczkolwiek od tej reguły możemy zaobserwować wiele wyjątków. Wydawano je w Warszawie, Radomiu i Sandomierzu. Poza treściami liturgicznymi i organizacyjnymi, na łamach schematyzmów odnajdujemy m.in. w XIX wieku modlitwy za cara Rosji i jego rodzinę, jak również tematy egzaminów konkurencyjnych na beneficja z zakresu znajomości Pisma Świętego i egzegezy, teologii dogmatycznej, moralnej, pastoralnej, homiletyki, prawa kanonicznego, historii Kościoła.
The Sandomierz diocese was created by the Pope Pius VII 30 June 1818. Already in two years later was spent first Ordos. Other titles: Directorium, Consignatio, Cathalogus, Ordo divini officii, Kalendarz liturgiczny diecezji sandomierskiej. Attached to elenchusa lists of the parish and clergies, started resulting after the World War II in the form of separate publishing companies, being entitled: Rocznik Diecezji Sandomierskiej, Skrócony Rocznik Diecezji Sandomierskiej, Skrócony Katalog Diecezji Sandomierskiej, Spis parafii i duchowieństwa diecezji Sandomierskiej. Apart from liturgical and organizational plots, on pages of schematisms we are finding prayers for the emperor of Russia and his family. There are also subjects of competitive examinations there to benefices in knowledge of the Bible and the exegesis, dogmatic, moral, pastoral theology, homiletics, Canon Law, history of the Church.

War is a huge political change, which, in addition to its social, political, or economic effects, also has other effects. One of these may be the impact on churches and religious associations, especially on their organizational and administrative structures. An excellent example confirming this thesis is World War II, after which the organization of the Catholic Church in Europe was transformed and the Holy See revised the boundaries of archdioceses and dioceses in various countries for almost 50 years. In this article, the author addressed the specific case of the creation of the Diocese of Görlitz, which is the smallest diocese in modern Germany. Through his analysis he showed that the war has a huge impact on the functioning and efficient management in the Catholic Church and causes legal and interpretative difficulties in its administrative division and consequently, the division of competencies, while requiring delicacy, since strictly religious documents can be perceived in an explicitly political way.

In the work titled „Miles Christi – Bishop Casimir Joseph Kowalski, Ordinary Chełmno Diocese”, among other things, there was presented the influence of the first after war ordinary on the development and rebuilding of Chelmno Church in a very difficultafter-occupation period. The description of bishop’s activity was preceded by the presentation of his way from childhood till the moment he settled in Pelpin. Bishop Kazimierz Joseph Kowalski was born in March 2, 1896 in Gniezno, then grew up in the house fulfilled with the spirit of piety and patriotism. He was involved in the Wielkopolska Uprising. After that, he took priestly vows and graduated from the Seminary in Poznań in 1922. When he took the holy orders, he went abroad to study philosophy. In 1935 the priest was nominated to be a dean of seminary in Poznań. After the war, he returned to Poznań. Chelmno diocese was one of the oldest Polish dioceses. It was devastated like never before under the occupation during World War II. In April 12, 1946 in Rome there was published the bull appointing priest Kazimierz Joseph Kowalski to the position of 56th ordinary of Chelmno diocese. The act of the acceptance of the rule took place in June 30, 1946.Thepriest chose as the motto of his bishop’s way words: Miles Christi. At the very beginning of his service, he gave three addresses: to priests, the faithful and the young. Then he started to organize works at The Seminary. In 1959 he organized the Diocesan Synod. He also took care of the ill and the suffered. He became famous as a big Marian advocate and a bard of Marian cult. During his ruleit is preaching the word of God that was perhaps his the most important duty. The bishop took a very active part in the works of the Polish Episcopate. He was the first ordinary in Chelmno diocese who participated in works of the Second Vatican Council (1962 – 65). Bishop Kazimierz Joseph Kowalski died in May 16, 1972 in Czestochowa.

There have existed and developed various forms of convent life in the Ełk Diocese for 25 years. The formation of individuals for consecrated life has been continuing as well. First of all, the article outlines the main forms of con-secrated life. Next, it presents the activities and achievements in favour of es-tablishing and a proper development of consecrated life forms in the diocese. The structure and people responsible for that accomplishment, as well as the statistics of the congregations and people being part of the consecrated life are presented. The different undertakings and symposiums, prayer and educational meetings and other forms of support are mentioned. Bishop Edward Samsel, who has been responsible for the diocese’s consecrated life, as well as having been Chairman of the Episcopal Commission of Poland for Institutes of Conse-crated Life, has played a huge role in that respect. The carried out analysis has allowed to determine that consecrated life forms have been deeply rooted and imprinted in the foundation and structure of the diocese.

Social teaching of subsequent popes had to be brought to life. The efforts were intensified at the beginning of the XX century when pope Pius X announced the need for development of Catholic Actions in social life. The problem was later raised by Benedict XV and especially Pius XI. In Poland, the popes’ calls faced an uneven response. At first, the actions were taken in the Archdiocese of Cracow, and later by primate August Hlond. The Catholic League, as this was the name of the organization coordinating efforts of Catholic associations, was supposed to be further developed in other dioceses. Finally, its structure was supposed to be centralized. Between 1927 and 1929, a Catholic League was organized in the Diocese of Lublin. Amongst the efforts of its bishop, Marian Leon Fulman, its actions incorporated many cleric and secular persons. The efforts were made to develop local structures, make contact with the press and the General Committee of the League. Despite the propaganda developed also in Lublin’s press, boisterously announced actions ground to a halt. The aim of the article is to describe the origin, the structure and the importance of the Catholic League in the Diocese of Lublin.

Celem artykułu jest znalezienie odpowiedzi na pytanie o najwcześniejszą kościelną przynależność administracyjną obszaru między rzekami Wisłą i Wieprzem. Zagadnienie to było już przedmiotem kontrowersji akademickich w zakresie możliwego wpływu chrześcijaństwa metodiańskiego nie tylko na wskazanym obszarze, ale w ogóle na ziemiach polskich. Zdecydowana większość autorów – nawet jeśli niektórzy z nich dopuszczają przekonanie o jakimś oddziaływaniu metodiańskim – stanowczo odrzuca obecność jakiejkolwiek zorganizowanej struktury tego obrządku na ziemiach na północ od Karpat. Organizacja terytorialna Kościoła między rzekami Wisłą i Wieprzem może być bez wątpienia wiązana dopiero z poznańskim biskupstwem łacińskim. Było ono dla omawianego terenu bezsprzecznie pierwszą trwałą strukturą diecezjalną, zależną zresztą bezpośrednio od Stolicy Apostolskiej. Co prawda, jeśli założymy polityczną przynależność tego terenu w drugiej połowie X wieku do Czech, należałoby uznać jego jeszcze wcześniejsze uzależnienie od diecezji praskiej i metropolii mogunckiej oraz nieco późniejszą przynależność do diecezji ołomunieckiej. Formalny charakter tego związku pozbawiony byłby jednak trwałych lokalnych struktur chrześcijaństwa, co musiało być zresztą charakterystyczne także dla pierwszych dekad zależności od biskupstwa w Poznaniu. Wydaje się więc, że dopiero wejście ziem między Wisłą i Wieprzem w kościelno-administracyjną zależność od biskupów krakowskich i metropolitów gnieźnieńskich na przełomie X i XI wieku okazało się stabilnym związkiem pod względem materialnym i duchowym.
The purpose of this study is to find the answer to the question of ecclesiastical administrative affiliation regarding the area between the Vistula and Wieprz Rivers. This relatively narrow aspect of the research was the subject of academic controversy over the possible influence of the organization of Methodian Christianity, not only on the designated area, but in general on Polish soil. The vast majority of authors – even if some of them allow for a wide geographic range of Methodian influence – firmly opposes the idea of the presence of any structure of the Methodian rite in the lands north of the Carpathian Mountains, regarding this idea as unsubstantiated. The form of territorial organization of the Church involving the land between the Vistula and Wieprz Rivers could only be in the Latin bishopric of Poznań, which was undoubtedly a permanent diocesan structure that depended directly on the Holy See from its earliest period. Theoretically, if the area between the Vistula and the Wieprz Rivers had been included in the territory that on the Czechs in the second half of the tenth century, it would have also belonged to the Diocese of Prague and the Metropolis of Mainz, or, a bit later, to the Diocese of Olomouc. The formal nature of that membership would have probably involved a lack of durable local structures of Christianity, which also had to be a characteristic of the first decades of their dependence on the Diocese of Poznan. It seems that it was only the entrance of the lands between the Vistula and Wieprz Rivers into an administrative relationship to the Bishops of Cracow and the Metropolitans of Gniezno in the late tenth and eleventh centuries, which proved to be a stable association that would be strengthened in material and spiritual significance in the coming decades and centuries.

In the Płock Diocesan Archive, it was possible to find unknown testimonies of holy orders from the diocese of Płock from 1486 and 1504. They refer to the ordination of three clerics from Wilkanów and Nowa Wieś by the Płock ordinaries and suffragans. The analysis of these materials is important for the prosopographical studies of the Płock diocese’s clergy in the late Middle Ages.

In 2012 the Diocese of Ełk prided itself on nine sanctuaries. During the 20 years of the diocese of the sanctuary there have been several changes. Two new sanctuaries were established: Leipzig and Elk. All paintings in the Marian sanctuaries were crowned during this time (4 images out of 6). In the 2012 schematism the names of the sanctuaries have been clarified and the division into Marian shrines and others (“other”) have been introduced.

The article presents the question of the celebration of the funeral of Marshal Pilsudski in the diocese of Lomża in May 1935, which took place in the context of the internment of Bishop Stanislaw Łukomski by the administrative authorities and the state. Next to shift the course of events in the article was also outline the background to the conflict, as well as answers to questions about how the incident occurred, who was his main inspiration and organizer of why the celebration of the funeral of Marshal Pilsudski in the diocese of Lomża turned into a political and an anti-Church and then ended the whole thing.

This article analyses the last four synods of the diocese of Tarnów, highlighting their structure and course. Diocesan synods grow out of the needs of the particular Church; they shape the ecclesial reality most clearly by the formulated disciplinary, pastoral and spiritual proposals, reaching the very basic ecclesiastical and social environments. Each synod has its specific meaning in the history of the diocese, and its impact is certainly not limited to the formulated proposals. A diocesan synod has a very important function in the process of formation of the particular Church. The synods of the Diocese of Tarnów were the place of meeting of and dialogue between the bishop, the clergy and the laity of the Church in Tarnów. The present article discusses five points : ”Legal grounds”, “First Synod of the Diocese of Tarnów – 1928”, “Second Synod of the Diocese of Tarnów – 1938”, “Third Synod of the Diocese of Tarnów – 1948”, “Fourth Synod of the Diocese of Tarnów – 1986”.

W Koprzywnicy okresu staropolskiego źródła odnotowują funkcjonowanie czterech kościołów pod wezwaniem: Wszystkich Świętych, św. Leonarda, Ducha Świętego oraz klasztorny św. Floriana. Najstarszym był parafialny pw. Wszystkich Świętych, który służył lokalnej parafii do 1821 r. Po renowacji w XIX w. został kaplicą. Dopiero od 2000 r. na nowo stał się świątynią parafialną. Kościół pw. św. Floriana służył sprowadzonym do Koprzywnicy w 1185 r. cystersom, zaś po ich kasacie został przemianowany na parafialny. Dwa pozostałe zostały zlikwidowane: św. Leonarda w XVI w., zaś Ducha Świętego na początku XIX w. Artykuł ukazuje stan kościołów oraz duchowieństwo koprzywnickie na przełomie XVIII/XIX wieku.
In Koprzywnica of the Old Polish period, sources record the functioning of three churches dedicated to All Saints, St Leonard, the Holy Spirit, and the monastery church of St Florian. The oldest was the parish church of All Saints, which served the local parish until 1821. After renovation in the 19th century it became a chapel. Only since 2000 has it become a parish church again. St. Florian’s church served the Cistercians who were brought to Koprzywnica in 1185, and after their dissolution it was transformed into a parish church. The other two were liquidated: St Leonard's in the 16th century and the Holy Spirit's at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Diocesan bishops were always obliged to supervise the pastoral work in parishes and the result of this was not only the post-visitation remarks but also written protocols. In fact, this practice was often neglected and the storage of the created post-visitation documentation was completely neglected. The Council of Trent highlighted this issue. Since then visitation records are preserved, but not all. Perhaps it was mistakenly thought that the most important were the latest one. Hence there are big gaps in documentation. Basically, each diocesan archive stores the visitation protocols of its own diocese. In Włocławek, however, there is a substantial collection of canonical visitation books of the historical Archdiocese of Gniezno. These books were stored here by order of occupation authorities as the Diocese of Włocławek, after the partitions and the new delimitation introduced by the bull Ex imposita Nobis of 1818, included most territories of the historical Archdiocese of Gniezno. Similarly, the visitations of the Diocese of Włocławek before 1918 were partly in Gniezno and partly in Pelplin. It is important, especially for young church historians, to know where such signifi cant historical sources should be sought.

Bishop prof. dr hab. Z. Goliński’s legacy, preserved in the Archive of Metropolitan Curia in Częstochowa, revealed the sphere of his influence hitherto unknown. As a professor of moral theology, he felt responsible for the archive material relating to the past of the Diocese of Częstochowa. He was involved in collecting material concerning the history of the mentioned diocese. He also valued the latest documentation produced by the Diocesan Curia in Częstochowa. In his opinion it should not only be collected but also properly organized. Bishop Goliński learnt the respect for the archive material in his family and that is why he paid so much attention to the way this material was kept. He created the department for archive and entrusted it with the coordination of the archival tasks. He also built the necessary plan of the records of the Curia Archive and the relevant archival regulations for the Church of Częstochowa. The Bishop controlled this area personally with the help of the Chancellor issuing orders which were to improve archival activities of the Curia and Diocese. He had his concept of the archive for a Particular Church, based probably on the family experiences and the practice in running the personal archive. Bishop prof. dr hab. Zdzisław Goliński certainly stood out from the members of the Polish episcopate. He paid a great deal of attention to the competence of people employed in church archives and to the role of these structures in Curia and the whole Particular Church.

Nach einer Zeit der Stagnation, ja Regression in der Entwicklung des Dekanatsnetzes auf dem Territorium der Diözese Kielce im 19. Jahrhundert erfolgte in den Jahren 1911-1925 dessen dynamische Entfaltung. Dies geschah in mehreren Etappen. Die erste betraf die Berufung von Vizedechanten im Rahmen ausgedehnter Kreisdekanate im Jahre 1911, darauf folgte 1918 die Umgestaltung der Vizedekanatsbezirke zu selbständigen Dekanaten, und der dritte Schritt bestand in der Reform der Dekanatsgrenzen in den Jahren 1919-1921. Im Ergebnis dieser Umgestaltungen wurde das Dekanatsnetz in der Diözese Kielce weitgehend der neuen sozialen und demographischen Situation angepasst und überdauerte so bis zur Reorganisation der Diözesengrenzen im Jahre 1925.

Like the entire Diocese of Vilnius, the Cathedral Chapter of Vilnius drew considerably from the experience of the ecclesiastical environment of the Diocese of Cracow, which had already existed for four centuries when the Vilnius Chapter began and was establishing and organizing its own institutions and structures. Although the Diocese of Vilnius had remained part of the organizational structures of the ecclesial province of Gniezno from the beginning of the fifteenth century, it looked to Wawel and not to Wzgórze Lecha’s example. From the fourteenth century onward, Vilnius and Cracow were the capital cities of the Polish-Lithuanian state. For this reason, it was fitting that both of the dioceses, including their cathedral chapters, were organized, looked, and functioned similarly. When the local Church was being established and organized in Lithuania, Cracow naturally served as a model for Vilnius because the local church in Cracow had already existed for more than four centuries and was, therefore, more organized, dynamic, and greatly exposed to the world in every respect than the ecclesiastical environment of Gniezno. This was also due to the fact that the Diocese of Cracow was at the center of royal power: it supported the throne of the Commonwealth directly; it sanctioned the court’s actions; it provided the monarch with expert and intellectual help necessary to conduct internal politics and engage in diplomacy. It is also significant that the person responsible for establishing the Church in Lithuania was, in fact, Lithuanian—King Władysław II Jagiełło was the first Jagiellonian to ascend the Polish throne. His successors continued his policies in the religious realm in Lithuania. It is not surprising, therefore, the Jagiełłoes were solicitous to ensure that Vilnius enjoyed the proper place in the hierarchy of Polish-Lithuanian dioceses under their jurisdiction in accordance with the belief that “Vilnius annot stand out from Cracow.” The Lithuanian King Władysław II Jagiełło provided materially for the Church in Vilnius, and he ensured that the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had the proper position within the structures of the Polish-Lithuanian state, which has becoming increasingly more integrated. Although the Diocese of Vilnius drew from the Diocese of Cracow’s example, it did not blindly imitate it. After it had been established and organized, the Vilnius Cathedral Chapter was able to develop its own models, unique identity, and manner of functioning as a completely self-sufficient corporation that no longer needed to refer so strongly to the model of Cracow.

Changes in the church organization on Polish soil were caused by political considerations (partitions). The Diocese of Kujawy and Pomerania, that is Włocławek, maintained its unity, despite political cordons, after the first partition of Poland, at the time of the Duchy of Warsaw and in the initial period after the Congress of Vienna (at the time of so-called Kingdom of Poland). Diocesan boundaries in the areas which formerly were part of the Polish Republic were reorganized following the diplomatic efforts of the occupying countries, especially Russia and Prussia, in the Holy See. They invoked so-called Petersburg Convention, which unilaterally stated that a hierarch who had his seat in one country could not exercise ecclesiastical jurisdiction in another state. The Bull Ex imposita Nobis of June 30, 1818 delimited new diocesan boundaries in the Kingdom of Poland. 272 former parishes of the Archdiocese of Gniezno and 15 parishes from other dioceses were added to 45 parishes from the old territory. The Bull gave the diocese a new name: "Włocławek, or Kalisz." The final shape of the diocese in 1818 was determined by the executor, Franciszek Skarbek Malczewski, a former Bishop of Włocławek, who became the first Archbishop of Warsaw. The new spatial arrangement of the diocese was completely different from the old boundaries. Before the reorganization, the diocese was oriented towards the north and it reached the Baltic Sea; after the changes,  it stretched far to the south, beyond Czestochowa. At a time of national slavery, the Diocese of Kujawy and Kalisz was the largest one in the Kingdom of Poland (after regaining independence by Poland it had 1,614,000 of the faithful, covering 390 parishes and 39 deaneries). It was not until Poland regained its independence that new diocesan boundaries were delimited.

In 1945, the area of the present parish in Sadlinki was mostly inhabited by Protestants. After the end of World War II, their place was taken by Poles, mostly Catholics. There was a post-Evangelical temple here, built in the interwar period. It was taken over by Catholics as early as 1945. The church became a branch of the parish in Nebrowo Wielkie. In 1958 the ruler of the Warmia Diocese appointed a priest. Formally, he was the vicar of the parish in Nebrowo Wielkie. The Warmia Docese was not allowed to rebuild the pastorʼs house, which was to become a presbytery. The priest lived in a private building, which was part of a farm. The priest could buy them because he had the required agricultural education. Despite the efforts of the rulers of the Warmia Diocese and the faithful, the state authorities did not agree to the erection of a parish in Sadlinki until 1973. After its establishment, the current chaplain did not obtain the approval of these authorities to take the office of the parish priest. The obstacles only ceased in 1982, with the change of the chaplain.

In Mazovia, in the 1420s, we do not notice any signs of interest in the Hussite movementyet, although it is encountered in Wielkopolska and Kujawy at that time. The first signals about people sympathizing with the Hussite reform appeared at the end of the third decade of the 15th century. Over the course of less than twenty years (1440-1457), several places should be noted (Płock, Ciechanów, Strzegowo, Baboszewo, Bulkowo), where we meet some forms of interest in the teachings of John Hus. For the most part, they were clergymen, pastors of local parishes, and in one case a Płock scriptor, who may have familiarized himself with the reform program proposed by the Prague theologian. Is it possible to talk about the phenomenon of Hussitism in Mazovia on the basis of the above-discussed examples? I do not think so. It was not an organized movement with its leaders and, of course, supporters.These cases rather reflect some priests’ religious sensitivity, which may have been stimulated by the information coming from the world and have found an outlet in such forms of piety as the more frequent practice of exhibiting the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance to revive the piety of the faithful. Secondly, the shortcomings in the education of the clergy and, therefore, the glaring deficiencies in the knowledge of theological issues, contained traps of falling into religious subjectivism. Probably the bishop's invitation to the suspect, the explanation, and a commitment to abandon unusual religious practices were enough to have the matter settled.The files of meetings of the cathedral chapter do not inform us about the theological debates that took place there, or on attempts to defend one’s own position – as it will happen a hundred years later due to the reform of Martin Luther. In this case, it was enough for Mikołaj of Mirzyniec to elaborate a set of basic principles of the Catholic faith, to acquaintfirst of all, the clergy with them, at the synods summoned by the bishop, and thus the problem was settled.
Na Mazowszu, w latach 20 - tych XV wieku nie zauważamy jeszcze przejawów zainteresowania się ruchem husyckim, choć spotyka go się w tym czasie w Wielkopolsce i na Kujawach.Pierwsze sygnały o osobach sympatyzujących z reformą husycką pojawiły się w końcu trzeciej dekady XV wieku. Na przestrzeni niespełna dwudziestu lat (1440-1457) należy odnotować kilka miejscowości (Płock, Ciechanów, Strzegowo, Baboszewo, Bulkowo), gdzie spotykamy jakieś formy zainteresowania nauką Jana Husa. W większości byli to duchowni, duszpasterze miejscowych parafii, a w jednym przypadku płocki skryptor, który być może tą drogą zaznajomił się z programem reformy proponowanej przez praskiego teologa. Czy na podstawie wyżej omówionych przykładów można mówić o zjawisku husytyzmu na Mazowszu? Sadzę, że nie. Nie był to zorganizowany ruch, mający swoich przywódców i oczywiście zwolenników. Przypadki te bardziej odzwierciedlają religijną wrażliwość niektórych duchownych, która być może pobudzona przez docierające ze świata informacje, znajdowała ujście w takich formach pobożności jak choćby częstsze praktykowanie wystawiania Najświętszego Sakramentu w monstrancji dla ożywienia pobożności wiernych. Po drugie niedostatki w wykształceniu duchownych a tym samym rażące braki w nieznajomości zagadnień teologicznych, zawierały pułapki popadnięcia w religijny subiektywizm. Chyba wystarczyło zaproszenie podejrzanego przez biskupa, złożenie wyjaśnień i zapewne zobowiązanie się do zaniechania nietypowych praktyk religijnych, by sprawę uznać za załatwioną. Akta posiedzeń kapituły katedralnej nie informują o mających miejsce debatach teologicznych, próbach obrony własnego stanowiska – jak będzie to miało miejsce sto lat później za sprawą reformy Marcina Lutra. W tym przypadku wystarczyło opracowanie przez Mikołaja z Mirzyńca zbioru podstawowych zasad wiary katolickiej, zaznajomienie z nim przede wszystkim duchownych na zwoływanych przez biskupa synodach i problem został załatwiony.

The paper analyses the use of online media to conduct information policy in the parishes of the Roman Catholic Church in the Rzeszów diocese. The basis for the analysis is provided by two co-authored studies on the information policy of priests in the Diocese of Rzeszów conducted jointly with Dr Zbigniew Chmielewski at the turn of 2012 and 2013, and later repeated in 2018. The research was altogether carried out on the basis of similar methodological assumptions, which were implemented in a series of anonymous questionnaires. The paper focuses on the part of the research that concerned the use of Internet-related (online) media in the communication activities of the parish website, as well as social media (both official parish profiles in social media, as well as private profiles of priests).

Article presents the cathedral environment of Płock from the erection of the bishopric of Płock in 1075 until the end of the fourteenth century. The author discusses the origins of the Plock Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The paper also focuses on the rulers of the Diocese, especially Aleksander from Malonne, Werner and Jakub from Korzkiew, which constitutes the backdrop for the characterization of the local scriptorium to the fourteenth century. The whole text is crowned with a detailed discussion of works coming from Plock, both those that survived to the present day, as well as those which did not survive World War II. Thanks to arduous research into the book collection of the Cathedral Library of Płock done before the Second World War by such people as Mathias Bersohn, Bishop Antoni Julian Nowowiejski and Adam Vetulani, the author of the article managed to make an attempt to characterise the manuscripts coming from cathedral scriptorium of Płock to the fourteenth century.

The aim of this article is to present the early days of the formation of the Collegiate Chapter in Kielce. The analysis of the source material indicates that the Chapter of Kielce was founded in the 12th century on the basis of the revenue of the St. Adalbert Church in Kielce. At the beginning all the members of the corporation lead a community life (vita communis), but over time the assets of the Chapter was divided by separating particular prebendaries. This reorganization took place probably at the beginning of the 13th century. Perhaps this event occurred in 1213. In any case it happened before the year 1229. As a result of the reorganization 7 or 8 prebendaries were created. The earliest prebendaries were all prelatures, that is, provostry, custody, decania, scholasteria. Three or four canonic prebendaries were part of the Chapter and it is certain that the canonry, called the Jewish one, created in 1213 was among them. The others are probably the prebendaries of Pierzchnica, Brzechów and Szydłowiec. The late medieval composition of the Chapter comprising 4 prelatures and 6 canons was completed, in time, by the canons called Szewno and Sieradowice. The first one was created in the middle of the 13th century, and the other one between 1327 and 1350. As it has been mentioned above, the creation of the Chapter of Kielce was connected with the acquisition of the property of St. Adalbert Church. The income derived from it was, however, too meager to meet the needs of all the prelates and canons. In the light of the late medieval sources it can be assumed that the revenue of the St. Adalbert Church was used to create only 2 prelatures (custodia and scholasteria) and 2 canons (Pierzchnica and Brzechów). The pay for other prebendaries came from other sources. It is assumed that the main founders-if not the only ones-were the Bishops of Kraków.

The above text continues the issues contained in the article which appeared in the previous (94) volume of this academic journal. It concerns the process of marking the boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin, which originated the diocese of Lublin in 1805. The leitmotif of this article is historical and geographical analysis of the territorial formation of the diocese of Lublin from the moment of issuing the foundation bull to the year when all the directives from the bull were implemented, and the structure of deaneries and parishes for the new diocese was completely established. The article focuses on the boundary delimitation of the diocese of Lublin and shows the problems connected with the organization of its territorial structures, and above all problems arising from the modification in the existing structure of deaneries and parishes. Cartographic presentation of the parts of diocese of Lublin and its territorial organization enables to make comparative analysis of the contents of the foundation bull for the diocese of Lublin and its later deanery and parish structure, which was legitimized after 1807. The boundary instability of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin, which was the result of the changes in the delimitation due to the partition of Poland beginning at the end of the 18th century, is the reason why this article is accompanied by a few maps, the aim of which is to illustrate each and every modification to the boundaries of the diocese of Chełm and Lublin and to show its parts along with the marked capitals of the deaneries.

Opis:
The diocese is the Catholic Church made manifest in a definite place. The Church is realized there in its priestly, teaching and pastoral functions. Owing to the bishop's ministry the diocese is a part of the Catholic Church, and at the same time it is a particular Church that has its own identity and specificity. the bishop’s ministry is directed to all the faithful in the diocese. Disabled people are entrusted to his special care, as they cannot fully realize the Christian mission in the parish. For them the bishop, along with the diocesan curia and properly prepared priestly and lay assistants, organizes a special kind of pastorate that has asupra-parish character. He also supports efforts made by parish priests on the basis of the principle of personalization, normalization and integration. It is also the bishop’s task to offer material, educational and teaching aid, as well as help in their rehabilitation.

The article presents the parish library in Wrzawy in 1748. Information about it was provided by the protocol of the general visitation of the archdeaconry of Zawichost in the diocese of Cracow, realized by the archdeacon of that time, Józef Cyprian Lange (+1757). The collection of 15 books had a typically pastoral character. Texts of the Holy Scriptures, homiletic works of Alexander Lorencowicz, Sebastian Stryjewicz, Jan Osorius, Didacus Nisenus theological-moral Jan Busaeus, Robert Bellarmine, Ludwik of Granada and ascetic Tomasz and Kempis, helped to work on the pulpit or in the confessional. Thus, although it was not a collection of books, it was varied in content.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 62 (2014), issue 2. The presented work makes reference to results of research on the ordination of religious clergy by bishops of the dioceses of Gniezno and Płock in the 15th and 16th centuries. The analysis of the contents of the books of pontifical acts of the Kuyavian bishops issued in the first half of the 16th century and the survey of selected books of the Włocławek Consistory permits the identification of more than 100 previously unknown members of the religious clergy originating chiefly from monasteries situated in the area of the Kuyavian Diocese, who received minor or major holy orders from their ordinaries and suffragans.

Pafnucy Siehen, from Bielsk, was the founder of the Suprasl monastery. He was the one who had the biggest contribution to the creation of the first churches, financial security and determination of the status of the monastery in the Orthodox Church. The Siehen family incurred costs of raising the monastic congregation in Gródek. The Siehens, who co-founded the construction of the monastery, received numerous estates from King Sigismund the Old (Zygmunt Stary). Pafnucy Siehen created a well-organized religious community and supervised legal and material protection of his monastery. At the beginning of 1509 Hegumen Pafnucy Siehen made a request to the king for permission to build a stone Orthodox church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The construction of the church began in October 1510. According to the majority of historians, this year was the date of Pafnucy Siehen’s death. On the basis of new evidence, it has been proven that Pafnucy Siehen did not die that year; he participated in the council of Vilnius in 1509–1510. At this council Pafnucy Siehen, the hegumen of Supraśl, was declared a bishop. After bishop Wassian’s death in 1512, Pafnucy Siehen became the ordinary of Vladimir-Brest diocese. His nomination was supported by the Metropolitan of Kiev, Joseph and secular Orthodox elites. After choosing hegumen Pafnucy the Vladimir-Brest leader, the importance of the Siehen family rapidly increased. Bishop Siehen, as a bishop, initiated the restoration of numerous churches and monasteries destroyed during the Tatar invasion in 1491. In the years 1514–1516 Pafnucy received from the king the confirmation of privileges granted to the episcopate and the Cathedral of the Dormition in Vladimir-Volynski. Bishop Pafnucy managed the Lutsk-Ostroh diocese since 1523. He officially took over the Lutsk diocese after the death of bishop Cyril in 1526. Pafnucy Siehen held his episcopal function in Lutsk until 1528.

Visitations are one of the most valuable and interesting church sources. This article attempts to present the condition of visitation records of churches and monasteries of the Diocese of Lutsk-Zhytomyr and Kamyanyets from the late 18th to the early 20th century in the archives of Ukraine. Difficult history of these lands in the last century contributed to a considerable dispersal of interesting materials, and what is worse, to irreversible destruction of some of the records. Currently, the largest number of the visitation descriptions of the mentioned dioceses are preserved in the Central State of Historical Archive of Ukraine in Kyiv and the State Archive of Zhytomir and Khmelnytskyi Oblast, which include, among others, the fonds of the Roman-Catholic Consistory of Kamyanyets and Lutsk-Zhytomyr and the visitation records of the monasteries in the Diocese of Lutsk-Zhytomyr. The presented material showed that the oldest of the surviving visitation records of the churches and monasteries in Podolia, Volhynia and the Kiev region come from the mid-90s of the 18th century and the latest ones come from 1909.

In 1898, a questionnaire was sent the parish clergy on behalf of Antanas Baranauskas, Bishop of Sejny, in which, among other things, they were asked about the local languages used in church practice. An analysis of the clergy’s answers shows that at the end of the nineteenth century, there were not many potential parishes in the diocese of Sejny or Augustów where conflicts over the use of languages in the additional services could arise. The Lithuanian language was well established in most Lithuanian parishes or in those with few Polish believers. The most important source for studying the causes and development of linguistic conflicts in parishes is the parishioners’ petitions written to their spiritual superiors and to the civil authorities. These petitions include demands of each side, explain the situation, and ask for a change in the situation with regard to one language or the other. In the appeals written by the Lithuanian believers, the justification of the introduction of the Lithuanian language in additional services was that the majority of the believers in the parish were of Lithuanian nationality and that most of the parishioners did not understand Polish. The reason given by the Polish believers in their petitions was the tradition, i.e., that the Polish language had been around for a long time or that their ancestors built a particular church. The reactions of the hierarchs of the diocese of Sejny or Augustów to linguistic conflicts in the parishes depended on the number of believers of one nationality or the other in a parish. This was to maintain the principle of fairness, so that neither side would be disadvantaged. In the parishes discussed, the majority of the believers were Lithuanian parishioners, and this was taken into account in determining the proportions of sermons, hymn-singing, and other liturgical rites. The use of Polish in additional services was thus given its proper place.

Charity is an integral part of the Churchʼs ministry, and active charity is one of the Christianʼs basic duties (cf. Mt 25, 35-45). The Church follows in the footsteps of her Founder, who loved us and showed us this love not only through the Sacrifice of Salvation, but also through works of mercy (cf. Mt 11, 5). Therefore, he not only proclaims the love of neighbor and obliges him to perform acts of mercy, but also gives charitable activities institutional forms, making caring for the poor one of the main tasks of the deaconʼs office (Acts 6, 1-6). In Poland, the traditions of this activity date back to the beginnings of the Piast state. Over the centuries, it was mainly animated and led by bishops and religious orders, but also brotherhoods and lay people. It was similar in the interwar period and in the Lomza diocese, except that the nature and forms of this activity were adapted to the changing socio-political conditions after the war. And so, in the first period, emphasis was placed mainly on the organizational and coordination side of charity, and since the economic crisis in 1929 and the development of Catholic Action, primarily on specific charity work and refining its methods. By charity we will understand the entire charity campaign carried out in the interwar diocese of Lomza. It was based mainly on Parish Committees of Relief, consisting mainly of Vincentian associations and Catholic Action, 2) charitable institutions and foundations; 3) the activities of religious orders, in particular the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie edycji statutów kapituły wileńskiej i żmudzkiej autorstwa W. Pawlikowskiej-Butterwick i Liudasa Jovaišy. Prezentacja poprzedzona jest opisem dziejów obu diecezji oraz uwagami na temat roli statutów jako źródła prawa partykularnego obu kapituł. Uwagę poświęcono autorom statutów, a także ich problematyce. Omówiono podstawę edycji oraz aparat krytyczny. Zwrócono wreszcie uwagę na uzupełniające edycję ilustracje.
The purpose of this paper is to present the edition of the statutes of the Vilnius and Samogitian chapters by W. Pawlikowska-Butterwick and Liudas Jovaiša. The presentation is preceded by a description of the history of both dioceses and comments on the role of statutes as the source of the particular law of both chapters. Attention was given to the authors of the statutes, as well as their content. The editing base and the critical apparatus are discussed. Finally, attention was drawn to supplementary illustrations.

The issue of tithes was a very important aspect of the diocesan synods' legislative activity. It is also argued that tithes had a great importance for ecclesiastical institutions' functioning. The author makes an attempt of interpretation and analysis of the most important tithe statutes which were issued between XIIth and XVth century. The author focuses on the archdiocese of Gniezno, diocese of Cracovia, diocese of Breslau, diocese of Plock and diocese of Poznan. These dioceses were responsible for customizing the canon law's norms to regional principle. Those were issued by legate and provincial synods. It is worth noting that diocesan synods reacted for new occurrences and processes having political, economic or social character. The regulation of the internal church's web of tithes was one of the most important is-sues with which the diocesan synods' legislation had to deal with. Creation of new structures resulted in the progressive erosion of parish structures. By that time it was hard to decide who should to receive the tithes. Diocesan synods, basing on the common norms, decided to give the tithe only to those clergyman, who provided priestly activity (cura animarum). It was also banned to receive decima vagas – unspecified tithes. XVth century brought new trends of tithe payment. The nobility's movement started to struggle with the priesthood with power and position in the Poland, which the best example and symbol was cracovian bishop – Zbigniew Oleśnicki (1423-1455). This movement stood against tithes as well and mading attempts of restraining the tithe obligations. The issue of tithes was a very important aspect of the diocesan synods' legislative ac-tivity. It is also argument that tithes had a great importance for ecclesiastical institutions' func-tioning.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 2. The paper is an attempt to sum up studies to date on the development of  the parish network and the organisation of deaneries in the Diocese of Kraków until the end of the twelfth century. Historians at large and Church historians in particular who dealt with these issues in the 1990s put forward a hypothesis concerning the establishment of deaneries and a number of temples in the Krakow diocese before 1200. The paper confronts this hypothesis with the claims of historians. In the recent years, either indirectly or directly, they have addressed the development of the territorial organisation of the Kraków diocese until the end of the twelfth century. The paper offers a critical appraisal of their findings. In conclusion, the  hypothesis is put forward that the establishment of the network of deaneries in the Kraków diocese was a one-time action. The initiative was most obviously Bishop Gedko’s in the 1170s, as a result of which there appeared over 1200 churches in the territory of the Kraków diocese.

Bishop Jan Klemens Gołaszewski
Opis:
Jan Klements Gołaszewski was born on 23 November 1748 in Kowalewszczyzna in Podole, in a noble family. He was ordained to the priest-hood in 1772 at the St. Vincent de Paul Missionary Fathers Congregation in Warsaw. After leaving the congregation he was a parish priest in Pawłowice, and then in his native parish in Waniewo. In the years 1798-1800 he was the vicar in spiritualibus in the Podlasie area. He was one of the close co-operators of the first bishop of the diocese of Wigry Michał Franciszek Karpowicz, who appointed Rev. Gołaszewski as a vicar general and judicial vicar. After the death of Bishop Karpowicz he was put up by the Prussian administration as a candidate for the position of the bishop of Wigry. The Prussian authorities also considered the translation of Bishop Józef Miaskowski from Warsaw to Wigry. Finally, the King of Prussia approved the election of Gołaszewski for the bishop of the diocese of Wigry in spring 1804. The information process and official procedures involved in receiving the Holy Seeʼs approval of the nomi-nation and consecration of a priest entailed the necessity of substantial pay-ments, which Gołaszewski was unable to make. His preconization took place on 26 June 1806. Napoleonʼs campaign and the unstable political situation became a direct reason for the postponing of the episcopal consecration of the nominee. It finally took place on 5 March 1809 in Warsaw (in the times of the Duchy of Warsaw). Bishop Gołaszewski died on 8 March 1820.

Opis:
Prużana (now the Republic of Belarus) dates back to the early sixteenth century. For over four centuries the parish was part of several dioceses. First it was in the Diocese of Lutsk. In 1798, as a result of the Tsarist Russian legislation it was moved to the Diocese of Vilnius. When in 1925 the Diocese of Pinsk came into existence under the edict of Pope Pius XI Vixdum Poloniae unitas , the parish Kiwatycze became part of it. The inventory of the church in Kiwatycze, made due to the fact that the parish was taken over by Rev. Tomasz Lenczewski, after the death of Rev. Mikołaj Bogdanowicz, illustrates the history of the parish church, its interior décor, sacred vessels and vestments, registry books, the state of the parish library, parish presbytery and farm buildings, a landed estate and the population residing in the parish. The facts included in the inventory were consistent with the actual state of the parish, which was confirmed by the signature and stamp of Rev. Witalis Gąsiewski – the Dean of Prużana.
