The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 2. The paper is an attempt to sum up studies to date on the development of  the parish network and the organisation of deaneries in the Diocese of Kraków until the end of the twelfth century. Historians at large and Church historians in particular who dealt with these issues in the 1990s put forward a hypothesis concerning the establishment of deaneries and a number of temples in the Krakow diocese before 1200. The paper confronts this hypothesis with the claims of historians. In the recent years, either indirectly or directly, they have addressed the development of the territorial organisation of the Kraków diocese until the end of the twelfth century. The paper offers a critical appraisal of their findings. In conclusion, the  hypothesis is put forward that the establishment of the network of deaneries in the Kraków diocese was a one-time action. The initiative was most obviously Bishop Gedko’s in the 1170s, as a result of which there appeared over 1200 churches in the territory of the Kraków diocese.

Canonical visitation of the parish as a form of implementation of the episcopal office is the momentous duty of every diocesan bishop. In the light of tradition reveals itself as one of the oldest institutions through which the shepherd of the diocese maintains direct contact with both clergy and laity. Because of the great pastoral significance of the visit as early as the fourth century synods ordered that the bishops during, taught and the Sacraments, a turning point in reviving this form of episcopal ministry had the Council of Trent whitch visits treated as an act preparatory to the diocesan synod. The Second Vatican Council referring to the biblical tradition and described the office of bishop as a “pastoral” and episcopal ministry as a “spiritual governance”. Noting that the territory of the diocese and its population should be such that the bishop, though he had to help others, he could personally act as bishop, created in this way, the fundamental conditions to give a canonical parish visitation clearly pastoral character. The last part of the article shows the extent to which the pastoral dimension of the mission of the diocesan bishop determines the practice of the canonical visitation of the Archdiocese of Warmia.

Jan Joachim Tarło belonged to a family whose three members were bishops of Poznań in the first half of the 18th century. Jan Joachim was an alumnus of Jesuit schools and during his sojourn there joined the Society of Jesus which he left in 1689, passing into the ranks of diocesan clergy. In December 1718 he was granted papal provision to the bishopric in Kiev and remained in office until 1723 when he was transferred to the office of bishop of Poznań which he fulfilled for nine years until his death on 13 August 1732. He died in Vienna on his return from a journey to Rome. His book of pontifical activities for the years 1719-1731 survives till the present day and is stored at the Archdiocesan Archive in Poznań (catalogue number ASO 7). The book is divided into sections in which the following types of activities are recorded: ordinations of various degrees including presbiterate and episcopate, blessing of cornerstones, consecration and blessing of churches, consecration of permanent altars and portative stones, blessing of church bells, consecrations of the holy oils. From the records in the book it follows that during his ministry as bishop of Kiev, Tarło stayed in the Cracow diocese and discharged his duties there. Interestingly, there is no evidence of his performing any official acts in the area of the Kiev diocese, which must have been connected with the fact that already by then a great part of its territory (the bishopric of Kiev included) lay within the borders of the Russian Empire, whereas the part that remained in the Kingdom of Poland encompassed just a few parish churches.

A diocesan synod should be convened when deemed necessary by the diocesan bishop. In the Diocese of Rzeszów, which was set up in 1992 by Pope John Paul II, the synod was announced on November 21, 1998. The first session of the Synod of the Diocese of Rzeszów took place on March 24, 1999 and the solemn closure meeting on November 20, 2004. In a decree issued on that day, Kazimierz Górny, the Bishop of the Diocese of Rzeszów, approved the resolutions and announced them as the diocesan particular law. The resolutions of the synod became effective on January 19, 2005. The following article presents the rules of the particular law in regard to celebrating the sacrament of baptism, which is the “gate” to other sacraments, in the parishes of the Diocese of Rzeszów. The Church, which safeguards the deposit of sacraments, has the right to formulate the rules of their valid and respectful celebration. The author of this article discusses matters related to the baptism of children as well as adults. The article presents aspects related to the minister of the sacrament, parents and godparents, as well as the time and place of the celebration of baptism. It also refers to the “Instruction on celebrating the sacrament of baptism” which includes a lot of practical advice and pastoral suggestions for the ministers in order for the celebration of this sacrament to have influence on the formation of the religious life of the child’s parents, godparents and other related people. Following the common law norms, the Synod of the Diocese of Rzeszów highlights that priests should often remind their believers, both in the church and during the catechesis, about the meaning of this sacrament. It is necessary for salvation; through it the human being is freed from their sins and thus receives the dignity of the Child of God, becomes similar to Christ and gets included into the Catholic Church community. Priests should faithfully observe the liturgical regulations which set forth the way in which baptism should be celebrated, and respectfully treat other canonical norms. They are responsible for the correct documentation of this celebration by making a mandatory note in the parish book of the baptized.

Opis:
Jan Klements Gołaszewski was born on 23 November 1748 in Kowalewszczyzna in Podole, in a noble family. He was ordained to the priest-hood in 1772 at the St. Vincent de Paul Missionary Fathers Congregation in Warsaw. After leaving the congregation he was a parish priest in Pawłowice, and then in his native parish in Waniewo. In the years 1798-1800 he was the vicar in spiritualibus in the Podlasie area. He was one of the close co-operators of the first bishop of the diocese of Wigry Michał Franciszek Karpowicz, who appointed Rev. Gołaszewski as a vicar general and judicial vicar. After the death of Bishop Karpowicz he was put up by the Prussian administration as a candidate for the position of the bishop of Wigry. The Prussian authorities also considered the translation of Bishop Józef Miaskowski from Warsaw to Wigry. Finally, the King of Prussia approved the election of Gołaszewski for the bishop of the diocese of Wigry in spring 1804. The information process and official procedures involved in receiving the Holy Seeʼs approval of the nomi-nation and consecration of a priest entailed the necessity of substantial pay-ments, which Gołaszewski was unable to make. His preconization took place on 26 June 1806. Napoleonʼs campaign and the unstable political situation became a direct reason for the postponing of the episcopal consecration of the nominee. It finally took place on 5 March 1809 in Warsaw (in the times of the Duchy of Warsaw). Bishop Gołaszewski died on 8 March 1820.

Opis:
An ecclesiastical council typically involves a profound examination of issues of doctrine and practices which the Church should incorporate in its mission. At the regional and local level, plenary, metropolitan and diocesan synods play an analogous role to the one fulfilled by ecumenical councils. Diocesan synods deserve particular attention because their origin lies in the needs of local particular Churches. By offering disciplinary, pastoral and spiritual guidance, they build a concrete ecclesial reality, reaching the basic church and social communities. Each synod has its own special place in the history of a diocese, and its positive impact is not restricted merely to the formulated proposals. In 1938 it was ten years since the First Synod and the diocesan bishop was obliged by the Code of Canon Law (1917) to convene the Second Synod of the Diocese of Tarnów. This was not the only motive because in 1936 the First Plenary Synod of Poland took place. The event made it necessary to adapt the diocesan legislation to the resolutions of that Synod. The subject of the article was formulated as follows: The Forgotten Synod of 1938. The Course and Statues of the Second Synod of the Diocese of Tarnów. Why forgotten? To date there have been four synods in the diocese. All studies concerning the synodal legislation of the Diocese of Tarnów have relied solely on three synods. Upon an examination of the Second Synod, we come across a curt phrase saying that “the statutes of this Synod have gone missing.” No research has been done to reconstruct the statues of the Synod. The presented study is an attempt to familiarise the Reader with the motives, course and chief topics addressed by the Second Synod of the Diocese of Tarnów.

The Code of Canon Law gives the definition of a presbyteral council and declares: „In each diocese a presbyteral council is to be established, that is, a group of priests which, representing the presbyterium, is to be like a senate of the bishop and which assists the bishop in the governance of the diocese according to the norm of law to promote as much as possible the pastoral good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him”. The Fourth Synod of Tarnow Diocese reminds that a Diocese Presbyteral Council is as if the bishop’s senate with its own statues; a team of priests representing all clergy of the diocese, both diocesan and from religious orders. During the time when the diocese was led by bishop Życiński, there have been two terms of the Presbyteral Council with elections in 1990 and 1995. The article analyses the topics debated over by the Presbyteral Council between 1990 and 1997. Some of the following items were on the Council’s agenda: priests’ retirement age, spiritual formation of the lay members of the church, missions.

Opis:
Rękopis Wspomnień Krasińskiego został przekazany do Warszawy w 1927 roku do zbiorów Biblioteki Narodowej, gdzie zniszczony został w czasie Powstania Warszawskiego.
Bishop of Vilnius Diocese Adam Stanisław Krasiński (1810–1891) left a deep imprint not only as an active hierarch of the Roman Catholic Church, but also as an energetic participant of 19th c. cultural life, a man of letters. Not complying with the instruction of Governor General Michael Murav’ev to issue a circular condemning the 1863 uprising, Krasiński in the early summer of 1863 was exiled to Vyatka (now Kirov). Released from exile in 1883, without the right to return to his diocese, Krasiński settled in Krakow. The period of the life of the bishop in Krakow from a creative point of view was very productive. From his youth interested in literature, having also been a man of letters, the preparer of a dictionary of Polish synonyms, Krasiński while living in Krakow began to write memoirs. For the first time the Memoirs [Wspomnienia] of the Bishop of Vilnius written in his native Polish were published in 1900 in the newspaper „Czas”, and in the same year 1900 (or in early 1901) the „Czas” publishing house issued them as a book with a press run of 150 copies. In the Memoirs there are interesting details from the history of the Piarist order, about the situation of the Roman Catholic Church in the lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that after its collapse fell to the Russian Empire, and the literary and intellectual realities of life in Vilnius. The twenty years of exile are described very succinctly and the life in Krakow after returning from exile is not even mentioned at all. The paper reconstructs the path of the Vilnius Bishop’s memoirs from manuscript to printing at the beginning of the 20th c. While uncovering the circumstances of the writing and publishing of the Memoirs, it was determined that in the collections of the National Museum in Krakow since 1917 is stored not the manuscript of Krasiński ‘s memoirs, but its editorial version with fragments of the autograph. It is assumed that the original memoirs have not survived. Stanisław Estreicher (1869–1939), then a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and a contributor to the newspaper „Czas”, edited the manuscript. It is clear that part of Krasiński’s Memoirs were among the manuscripts transferred from the Polish Museum in Rapperswil to the National Library in Warsaw in 1927. The annotation of the former Krasiński manuscript in Rapperswil lets one declare that among them was the part of the bishop’s memoirs about his years spent in exile. The preparer of the Krasiński Memoirs for publication in 1900 Stanisław Estreicher did not know anything about the Krasiński ‘s memoirs manuscript in Rapperswil. When and how the Krasiński manuscripts arrived in the Rapperswil museum is unclear. The manuscript of Krasiński’s memoirs handed over to Warsaw in the 1920s ended up in the collections of the National Library destroyed during the war. There are no data that would suggest that the latter manuscript (or its copy) could be found in the future. The genesis of the memoirs of Vilnius Bishop Krasiński, the history of the manuscript’s preservation and its preparation for publication hide more than one riddle.
