Opis:: In this study, digeneans of 4 cyprinid fishes (bream, ide, white bream, and vimba) from Lake Ladoga were investigated in May-June 2001-2003. Twenty one parasite species were recorded. Data on the species composition and intensity in some fishes are presented for each fluke species. The parasite species composition in different host species was compared. The results obtained were compared with earlier data.

Opis:: Opisthorchid digenean Pseudamphistomum truncatum (Rudolphi, 1819) was isolated from liver bile ducts of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) found dead in the fishing pond complex near Wrocław (Lower Silesia, SW. Poland) in March 2009. Since this is the first record of the parasite in the otter from Poland, the description, biometrical data and figure are presented.

Opis:: Ten species of digeneans were found in a survey of six species of terrestrial birds associated with woodland and urban habitats of north-western Poland carried out in 2006–2009: Leucochloridium paradoxum Carus, 1835 (Leucochloridiidae) from the Cyanistes caeruleus (L.) and the Parus major L. (Paridae); Leuchochloridium perturbatum Pojmańska, 1968 (Leucochloridiidae) from the Turdus merula L., (Turdidae) and the Corvus monedula L. (Corvidae); Leucochloridium sp. (Leucochloridiidae Poche, 1907) from the Asio otus (L.) (Strigidae) and P. major; Strigea strigis (Schrank, 1788) (Strigeidae) from the A. otus; Morishitium elongatum (Harrach, 1921) (Cyclocoelidae) and Psilotornus confertus Machalska, 1974 (Psilostomidae) and Leyogonimus postgonoporos (Neiland, 1951) and Lutztrema attenuatum (Dujardin, 1845) (Dicrocoeliidae) from the T. merula; Plagiorchis maculosus (Rudolphi, 1802) (Plagiorchiidae) from the C. caeruleus; Prosthogonimus ovatus (Rudolphi, 1803) (Prosthogonimidae) from the Dendrocopos major (Linnaeus) (Picidae); Zonorchis petiolatus (Railliet, 1900) (Dicrocoeliidae) from the T. merula and the C. monedula. Five species and one genus of digeneans: L. paradoxum from the C. caeruleus and the P. major; Leucochloridium sp. from the A. otus and P. major; P. confertus from the T. merula; P. maculosus from the C. caeruleus; P. ovatus from the D. major and Z. petiolatus from the C. monedula represent new Polish host records. S. striges and L. postgonoporus represent new Polish locations.

Opis:: This review aims to summarize our most recent knowledge of the unique mechanisms employed by digeneans to complete their complex life cycles. It is based on validated data from scientific literature and integrates both authors’ personal experiences. Several dynamic strategies utilized by digeneans are discussed in relation to their presence in three environments: aquatic, semi-aquatic and terrestrial. The following topics are discussed: transmission from host to host, which involves transmission of free-living stage of miracidium and cercaria: in active transmission – specific responses to environmental signals showing the presence of potential hosts (several papers of Haas et al.); in passive transmission – trophic transmission and mimicry by way of resemblance to natural food of potential host; and finally, transmission of the parasitic larvae (metacercaria and mesocercaria) – trophic transmission, manipulation of host behavior, and incorporating the intermediate host into food web of definitive host. This review also highlights several types of behavioral manipulations, including compensatory processes (Poulin, Lefèvre et al., Thomas et al.), and other mechanisms of manipulation (de Jong-Bring et. al). State-dependent alternative cycles demonstrating the difference between the terms „life cycle” and „life history” (Poulin, Thomas et al.) and the concept of „shared phenotype” (Lefèvre et al.) are also discussed.
