Opis:
Contemporary models of light conditions on the forest floor can be divided into two categories: undercanopy models that allow the light conditions in a stand under the canopy to be simulated, and models that take into account shielding from the side. Under-canopy models precisely estimate the availability of wavelengths of light spatially distributed under the canopy of stands: however these models require a large amount of data on the spatial structure of forest stands. The other class of models describes the light conditions on a particular open surface. These incorporate shielding from the side and are easier to use as they require less data than under-canopy models. In practice, in forest conditions, such models require data on the size, shape, and geographical location of surveyed surfaces (e.g. gaps, and cut areas) and on the height of the surrounding stand. Often, these data are available in databases, such as the State Forest Information System (SILP), can otherwise be obtained relatively easily (and inexpensively). Compared to under-canopy models, these models provide a cheap way to obtain useful information on variation in the light environment that affects the microclimate for regenerating plants on clearcuts and canopy gaps.

Opis:
In this work we have studied the energy and spectral characteristics of miniaturized dielectric barrier discharge KrCl-, XeCl-, XeBr-, and Xe2-excilamps of various designs as well as short pulse point-like light sources based on runaway electron preionized diffuse discharge. The maximum ultraviolet power density was 20 mW/cm2, which is comparable with the densities of ordinary dielectric barrier discharge excilamps, whereas the maximum efficiencies of the excilamps were not greater than 2.5%. The causes for the low radiation efficiency of the compact dielectric barrier discharge driven excilamps were analyzed. It is found that at an electron concentration of ne > 1014 cm–3, the efficiency decreases due to enhanced quenching of excited atoms or molecules in dissociation by electron impact. The spectral characteristics of a runaway electron preionized diffuse discharge formed between two pointed electrodes in atmospheric pressure air in an inhomogeneous electric field at a gap shorter than 8 mm were investigated. It is shown that the radiation spectrum of the discharge consists of bands of the second positive nitrogen system, and as the discharge transforms to a spark, lines of the electrode material appear in the spectrum. At a gap of 0.5 mm, weak X-rays from the discharge gap were detected.

Opis:
In general introduction few examples of astronomical explanations of well-known and common local physical phenomena are presented. They are meant to show that it is often much easier to explain commonly experienced phenomena by investigating the behavior of something which is very far from the observer. In main chapters of the article the transparency of interstellar and intergalactic medium as well as the mystery of diffuse interstellar bands are presented. These very important fundamental problems are – for some reasons – overlooked by contemporary researchers. Plausible mechanisms of sociological, psychological and methodological kinds are proposed in last chapter as a potential explanation of fading of the scientific attempts to understand the nature and to create better future for the mankind. These are ethics in science and interdisciplinary way of solving scientific problems.
