    Opis:
    The Bond between Language and Culture in the Light of Lexicography. The Role of the Stronger Bond with Culture in Bilingual Dictionaries for Translators. Bilingual dictionaries are used for various reasons. One of the reasons is to find out what the particular word means using its equivalent in the target language. What is of great importance here, is that sometimes the meaning itself – expressed lexicographically – provides not enough information that is necessary to fully understand the particular word. Although it appears that the isolated meaning of the word is clear and understandable, its constitutional and contextual meaning in specific linguistic environment becomes unclear, confusing or misunderstood. This can be observed especially when the word and its meaning are unique and characteristic for the particular culture. This article focuses on the use of the language which is specific for the given cultural group. The phenomena of both the bond existing between culture and language as well as the use of the language within the culture are expounded upon and explored on the example of the words welcome and goodnight. The article investigates whether and to what extend bilingual dictionaries include in their microstructure the information concerning the cultural aspects of the use of the linguistic entity. The short characteristic of bilingual dictionaries and the assessment of the culture-specific phenomena serve as the theoretical background for the subject under investigation.

    The author of the article writes about an unconventional reading of a small, amateurish Silesian-Chinese Dictionary by Marek Jachymski. By analysing the vocabulary, structure and the reliability of the translations the author of the article is lead to asking some important questions concerning prioritization and the political aspects of languages, mechanisms of word selection, the image of language, the world expressed by the selection of vocabulary and the specific character of a dictionary as a tool used in the process of translation and intercultural communication. The author pays close attention to the linguistic and cultural adequacy of some chosen word pairs. She highlights the need to consider such matters as schematic thinking about languages, the translating of cultures and the translator’s neutrality. By suggesting some excercises, the author also shows how this dictionary can be used in didactics that aim at developing students’ cultural and linguistic awareness, in terms of language and translation.

    W artykule opisano możliwość działania projektowego – stworzenia szkolnego słownika gwarowego. Zwrócono uwagę na znaczenie edukacji regionalnej oraz gwar jako składnika kultury regionalnej. Opisano także przygotowanie uczniów do projektu, konkretne rozstrzygnięcia przyjęte w słowniku (sposób zapisu, budowa hasła), wykorzystanie efektów pracy (słownika) w dydaktyce szkolnej.
    The article describes the possibility of a project activity – creating a school dialect dictionary. Attention was drawn to the importance of regional education and dialect as a component of regional culture. Also described are the students’ preparations for the project, specific solutions adopted in the dictionary (the way of writing, entry structure), the use of work effects (dictionary) in the school didactics.

    The paper presents Słownik warmiński of Wiktor Steffen as an unique work of the Polish dialect lexicography. It shows also the figures of the author and his brother Augustyn who rendered great service in research of the culture of Warmia. It discusses the editorial principles of the dictionary and its rich content. It relates to the charges of the first critics of the vocabulary. The paper treats Słownik warmiński as a personal, subjective work strongly influenced by the biography of the author – autochthon. It presents the different ways of use the content in the dialectological studies on multi-volume Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur conducting in the Institute of the Polish Language in the Polish Academy of Science (IJP PAN).

    The article compares descriptions of a linguistic unit Kashei the Immortal in entries in two linguocultural dictionaries. The choice of the analytical material is based on the fact that in the Russian collective consciousness Kashei the Immortal functions  as one of the most vivid examples of negative characters. The repelling appearance and personality of the character appear in songs, nursery rhymes and puzzles. Moreover, there stories about Kashei are passed from generation to generation. The comparison  of the entry Kashei the Immortal in linguocultural dictionaries aims at determining to what extent common knowledge about the analyzed linguistic unit is present in lexicographical publications.

    Opis:
    This study aimed to characterize proper names from the “Słownik mimiczny dla głuchoniemych i osób z nimi styczność mających” written by Józef Hollak and Teofil Jagodziński. This lexicon, targeted at deaf people, their families and friends was edited in 1879. Among the collected proper names, there are anthrophonyms and geographic names. The analyses have shown the similarities and differences between proper names in the Polish Sign Language and the ways of signing the collected onyms indicated by the authors of the dictionary. Results of the analysis confirm that the aim of the dictionary was to become a useful tool in the process of explaining the articles of faith and the Bible. What is more, the structure of the dictionary proves that this is not the lexicon of the Polish Sign Language, but a two-language dictionary that translates vocabulary from Polish language to the Polish Sign Language. This is why the analyzed lexicon does not present the natural system of proper names characteristic of the Polish Sign Language, but rather illustrates different ways of adapting proper names in Polish language to the methods of signing that are possible in Polish Sign Language. The ways of signing proper names indicated by the authors of the dictionary were not aimed at the facilitation of communication with deaf people, instead they reflect the meaning of proper names.

    W ostatnich dziesięcioleciach mijającego stulecia świat ogarnął niespotykany dotąd boom słownikowy. W Rosji i w innych krajach ukazały się liczne pozycje, w tym tak osobliwe, jak słownik żargonu więziennego czy wulgaryzmów, brakowało jednak słownika języka folkloru. Autor artykułu Świat folkloru w porządku alfabetycznym z satysfakcją odnotowuje fakt podjęcia prac nad trzema słownikami języka folkloru rosyjskiego i jednego – folkloru polskiego. Dwa z nich, a mianowicie słownik opracowany w Moskwie pod kierunkiem Nikity i Swietłany Tołstojów oraz w Lublinie pod kierunkiem Jerzego Bartmińskiego, mają charakter etnolingwistyczny. Dwa inne – przygotowywany w Moskwie pod kierunkiem Serafimy Nikitiny oraz w Kursku pod kierunkiem A.T. Chrolenki – mają charakter lingwofolklorystyczny. Słownik opracowywany w Kursku jest słownikiem typowo lingwistycznym, uwzględnia wyłącznie dane występujące w tekstach folkloru. W haśle słownikowym ujęte są wszystkie związki opisywanego leksemu. Hasło składa się z następujących części: (1) identyfikacyjnej, (2) paradygmatycznej, (3) syntagmatycznej, (4) paradygmatyczno-syntagmatycznej, (5) słowotwórczej, (6) funkcjonalnej, (7) informacyjnej. Dla ilustracji autor przytacza kilka haseł słownikowych: reka, zelenyj, promolvit’, vpolsvista. Zakłada się, że ta sama metoda opisu zostanie zastosowana do języka bylin, pieśni lirycznych i pozostałych gatunków folkloru. Z czasem nastąpi połączenie słowników języka poszczególnych gatunków folkloru w jedną całość. W pierwszej kolejności zostanie opracowany słownik języka bylin rosyjskich. Analizie poddane zostaną wyłącznie wyrazy autosemantyczne, pominięte zaimki, które nie posiadają określonej specyfiki folklorystycznej i nie mają większej wartości dla poznania folklorystycznego obrazu świata. Kurski słownik lingwofolklorystyczny będzie źródłem wiedzy nie tylko o języku, ale także o kulturze duchowej Rosjan.
    The recent decades have witnessed extraordinary proliferation of lexicographic work. Numerous publications have appeared both in Russia and elsewhere, sonic of them rather peculiar, such as dictionaries of prison slang or obscene expressions. Although so far there has been no dictionary of the language of folklore, three projects on the language of Russian folklore and one on Polish folklore are currently under way. Of these, two are ethnolinguistic and two linguistic-folkloristic in nature. The former category includes dictionaries compiled in Moscow under the supervision of Nikita and Svetlana Tolstoy and the one compiled in Lublin under the supervision of Jerzy Bartmiński. To the latter category belong those complied in Moscow under the supervision of Serafima Nikitina and in Kursk under the supervision of A. T. Khrolenko. The latter of these is a typically linguistic enterprise, it only records data from texts of folklore. A dictionary entry, which contains all collocations of a particular lexeme, consists of the following parts: (1) identificational, (2) paradigmatic, (3) syntagmatic, (4) paradigmatic-syntagmatic, (5) word-formational, (6) functional, (7) informational. A few entries serve as exemplification: ręka, zelenyy, promolvit’, vpolsvista. An assumption is made that the same descriptive method will be utilized for the language of perennial plants, the first category to be characterized, and for that of lyric songs and other genres of folklore. With time, the dictionaries of the language of different folklore genres will be combined into one whole. Only autosemantic words will be taken into account. Pronouns will be excluded for their lack of folkloristic specification and little value for arriving at a folkloristic worldview. The linguistic-folkloristic dictionary from Kursk will provide information not only about language but also about the spiritual culture of the Russians.

    The article presents the figure of Nikita Ilyich Tolstoy, the founder of the Moscow School of Ethnolinguistics, a historical philologist, linguist, and ethnologist. Nikita Tolstoy researched in the history of Slavic cultures and languages, Slavic comparative linguistics, folk studies, ethnography, and mythology. In his approach, he jointly considered language and spiritual culture, the language of creative activity of a community, and the relationships between them. The article presents and discusses the main ideas of Tolstoy’s rich body of research.
    W artykule prezentowana jest sylwetka Nikity Iljicza Tołstoja, twórcy moskiewskiej szkoły etnolingwistycznej, filologa-starożytnika i lingwisty-etnologa, który badał historię kultur słowiańskich i słowiańskich języków literackich, zajmował się słowiańskim językoznawstwem porównawczym, folklorystyką, etnografią i mitologią, widząc przy tym konieczność jednoczesnego rozpatrywania języka i kultury duchowej, języka i twórczości wspólnotowej, ich wzajemnych odniesień i różnych typów zależności. Przybliżane są podstawowe myśli z jego bogatej spuścizny.
