Opis:
The purpose of this article is to employ a comparative approach that allows us to understand the approaches towards art historiography articulated in two countries of South America. Although women artists had organised themselves early on in societies, in women’s exhibitions, and were one of the driving forces in art, when we look at how the art canon has been configured in these countries, we must move to the end of 20th century and the beginning of 21st to find consistent work that dissociates itself from dominant patriarchal perspectives. In this article, I propose to approach this process comparatively, looking at two periods: first, the eighties-nineties and the introduction of gender studies; and second, the exhibitions, research and books produced, above all, since 2000. In both periods, I shall also consider the artistic activism that generated historiography. In the two cases studied, Argentina and Chile, the tension between democracy and dictatorship will also be considered as a relevant factor that has interrupted a process that had begun in the 1970s and would be resumed with the return of democracy.

Totalitarianism is a form of social system (usually a state one), the essential feature of which is to strive for seizing strict subordination and constant control over all areas of social and individual life. There are no legal limitations for the totalitarian power, nor it limits itself. All totalitarian systems are preceded by violent social revolutions that overuse [misuse] the slogans of the Great French Revolution. Involvement of the citizens is usually in their mass participation in different forms of action and expression of their enthusiasm for the “successes” of the system.

Marxism, as any social ideology, contains many conflicting motives. They represent the potential of various political doctrines. The aim of the article was to show the sources, content and consequences of the ideological conflict between the two Marxists, precursors of conflicting political ideologies. Vladimir Lenin, with his monopolistic rights to the interpretation of Marxism, the army-like organization of the party and the recognition of his opponents as enemies, became the forerunner of the totalitarian system. Eduard Bernstein, touted as the creator of revisionism, has verified Marxism, rejected the ved that the socialist party should participate in a democratic system dogma of the class struggle, claimed the proletarian revolution being irrational and belie, using its mechanisms for achieving the objectives of the working class. In this way Bernstein became one of the promoters of democracy. The article discussed the main ideological and political consequences of the gap between the two ideological movements.

The article deals with the question of the formation – since the end of World War One until the emergence of the Nazi regime – of various conceptions of the political system in influential and widespread intellectual circles of the so-called revolutionary conservatives who represented nationalist, anti-liberal and anti-parliamentarian views. This political ideology adopted a clearly critical position regarding political, constitutional and legal solutions adopted in the Reich after the fall of the Hohenzollern empire in 1918. Criticizing parliamentary democracy, though not necessarily democracy as such, revolutionary conservatives announced the need to establish a system of dictatorial leadership in Germany, modeled after the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, oftentimes seeing the then President of the Reich, Paul von Hindenburg, as a suitable person for this role (they rather sporadically perceived Adolf Hitler in this way). Some of them not only approved of an authoritarian model of government understood as an opposition towards the so-called Weimar system, but also accepted the principles of totalitarianism (e.g., C. Schmitt, E. Jünger, E. Niekisch). Since 1933, the Nazis partly adopted the anti-liberal, anti-parliamentarian and authoritarian conceptions of revolutionary conservatives, reaching for – among others – Carl Schmitt’s theory of decisionism or Ernst Jünger’s idea of the total mobilization of the nation.

The purpose of this paper is to define the role of mass media in shaping the image of a terrorist organization on the example of the terrorist bomb attacks carried out on March 22, 2016 in Belgium. The author analyses with particular attention the media with regard to their function of priming and framing in the period immediately following the acts of terror effected in Belgium that have a significant influence on the media image of the terrorist organization Islamic State. The research material is composed of Polish journals “Rzeczpospolita” and “Gazeta Wyborcza” (22.03–8.04.2016). Considering progressive process of mediatization of the public sphere, the author of the paper tries to identify the relationship that exists between the evolution of the image of ISIS and press information.

The general objective of this paper is to conduct a post-mortem study of the Jonathan administration in Nigeria. The specific objective is to identify the aspects of the administration that facilitated the progress of democracy in the country (at this period). The study is significant because, the evidence of democratic progress in Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, would send strong signals (profound evidence) to despots in weak African democracies that after all, there are sound alternatives to despotic and malevolent governance-tendencies in such problematic polities. In such countries, coup plotting and other undemocratic practices are still highly attractive and the need for deterrence arises.

Opis:
The main objective of the article is to analyze the socio-political situation and the other factors determining the development of music types such as Fado and Copla during the dictatorship times in Spain and Portugal. These genres were used for the political and propaganda purposes. Many artists like for example Lola Flores or Amália Rodrigues have become famous exactly during the regime times, however, their real success can be measured with the arrival of democracy. Copla which represents the image of Franco’s Spain has been replaced by some new music genres and it has never been reborn as it had happened in the case of Fado. This Portuguese music genre was a subject of changes starting from 60’s. Significant modifications have been done in both: lyrics and accompaniment; Fado survived the anti-Fado period (1974-1975) and from the 90’s until present experiences an ongoing rebirth. Studies on Fado’s and Copla’s popularity may also prove to be crucial in understanding the phenomenon of transculturalism. All the factors that boosted the process of internationalization of this music in the twenty-first century should become an object of a multifaceted analysis.

Opis:
The construction of memories following the last Brazilian dictatorship is as plural as the number of social actors implicated and as fluid as political circumstances can be. From investments on institutionalized forgetting to the creation of policies of memory, governmental initiatives affected the way society processed the acts of terror perpetrated by the military regime (1964–1985). The development of such initiatives, however, cannot be understood without accounting for the persistent struggle of victims’ relatives and human rights’ advocates. This paper aims to reflect on the Brazilian post-dictatorial mnemonic conflicts by observing how different levels of memory interacted with the political sphere in the process of coping with political disappearance. Drawing on relatives’ testimonies regarding the disappearance of Fernando Santa Cruz and the institutional mechanisms developed by different governments, this text intends to demonstrate how State-sponsored absences during the dictatorship are constantly being (re)constructed according to social and political circumstances of the present.

In her novel, Juli Zeh paints the picture of a perfect world from which disease and suffering have been almost entirely eliminated and in which health becomes the overarching value. That would truly be a perfect world, wholly subordinated t the state and the dictates of health, were it not for the disobedient individuals breaking out of the system. One of such rebels and enemies of the state is the main character, Mia Holl. She becomes a symbol of freedom and independence, a personification of the right to illness, dirt and germs. In a sterile world an individual’s freedom and right of self-determination present a danger to the state’s apparatus – a totalitarian system in which nothing matters but the dictate of health.

Opis:
The article discusses foundations of Rafael Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic as well as the dictator’s policy that guaranteed the long-term dictatorship. It is a study of Trujillo’s policies that secured a social support, especially the regime’s policy of social and economic modernization. A study of social basis of the dictatorship and the scope of its control of the state and the society leads to a conclusion that Trujillo dictatorship had totalitarian nature. A full totalitarian model of the state in the Dominican Republic would have been possible only if a higher stage of economic development had been achieved and social structure changed. Partial modernization and “total” character of the dictatorship guaranteed stable rule of the Trujillo regime for three decades. The potential of revolutionary movement that influenced U.S. decision to support the overthrow of Trujillo is also debated.

The author of this article has focused on two issues. The first concerns the early activity of Gaius Julius Caesar and his position on the conflict between Lucius Cornelius Sulla and Gaius Marius. Caesar was then in close relations with the Cynno-Marian camp at the time, as evidenced by his marriage to Cornelia, daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna, and his appointment as a priest of Jupiter. In the second half of the article, Tomasz Ładoń analyses the conflict Sulla and Caesar after the end of the first civil war. Ładoń describes the causes and the course of this conflict and goes on to conclude that Caesar, despite his initial disagreements with Sulla, not only was not persecuted, but reached a compromise with him during the Sullan restauration in the 70s of the first century BC., which allowed him to start building his own career.
