Baryczka stream
Opis:
The Baryczka stream is a small (about 20 km long), left bank tributary of the River San (Podkarpackie Voivodeship). Studies on diversity of diatom communities using OMNIDIA software were conducted in 2010 and 2011. Diatomaceous indices IPS, GDI and TDI and Van Dam et al. classification system were used for water quality assessment. Planothidium lanceolatum, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata, Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum, Nitzschia linearis, Rhoicosphenia abbreviata, Navicula lanceolata and Naicula gregaria were the most numerous. Values of the IPS index indicate good water quality (II–III class). Based on the GDI index, waters of the Baryczka stream were classified to III class water quality. The TDI index indicated poor and bad ecological state on the most sampling sites. On all sampling sites alaliphilous (pH>7) diatoms taxa predominated. The most common were eutraphentic and hypereutraphentic diatoms. With respect to trophy, it was shown that α- and β-mesosaprobous diatoms were the most common (III and II class water quality).

Podkarpacie Region
Opis:
Diatoms Bacillariophyceae are a specialized, systematic group of algae, living in different types of ecosystems, and they are very good indicators of water quality. Recently, detailed studies have been carried out in the territory of the Podkarpacie Province on the diversity of diatoms in running waters. The area of study covers mostly the catchment of the biggest rivers of the province (mainly the Wisłok River) and cultivated soils. Running waters in the Podkarpacie Province are characterized by a huge species richness of diatoms, 738 different taxa have been found so far. The highest number of taxa was noted in the Wisłok River (400), while the Żołynianka and Różanka streams and the Mleczka were also characterized by huge diversity (from 200 to over 350 taxa). In the majority of studied sites diatoms of alkaline (pH>7) and nutrient rich (eutrophic) waters dominated: Navicula lanceolata, N. gregaria, N. capitatoradiata, Nitzschia palea, N. dissipata ssp. dissipata, Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum, A. pyrenaicum, Amphora pediculus, Diatoma vulgaris, Rhoicosphenia abbreviata, Planothidium lanceolatum, Cocconeis pediculus and C. placentula var. lineata. About 150 taxa were indentified on cultivated soils, among which the largest populations were formed by Hantzschia amphioxys, Mayamaea atomus, Nitzschia palea, N. pusilla, Pinnularia obscura and Stauroneis thermicola.

The study was conducted in an old, historical park, in the northern part of Stalowa Wola city (south-eastern Poland). The aim of the study was to investigate the diversity of moss-inhabiting diatoms of the white poplar (Populus alba L.) bark. During the study, a total of 47 diatom taxa were found, three out of which were considered as dominant. Three other species are mentioned in the Red List of the Algae in Poland: Achnanthes coarctata (Brébisson) Grunow, Luticola acidoclinata Lange-Bertalot and Stauroneis thermicola (Petersen) Lund. For three species: Luticola sparsipunctata Levkov, Metzeltin & Pavlov, L. vanheurckii Van de Vijver & Levkov and Hantzschia subrupestris Lange-Bertalot, this is the first report from Poland.

Opis:
In the diadinoxanthin cycle the epoxy group is removed from diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin is created. This conversion takes place e.g. in diatoms with the involvement of the enzyme diadinoxanthin de-epoxidase. In one of the diatom species, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (CCAP 1055/1 strain with genome sequenced) three de-epoxidase genes (PtVDE, PtVDL1, PtVDL2) have been identified, but only one of them (PtVDE) corresponds to violaxanthin de-epoxidase, an enzyme which is commonly found in higher plants. In these studies, the expression of two de-epoxidase genes of another Phaeodactylum tricornutum strain (UTEX 646), which is commonly used in diatom studies, were obtained in Origami b and BL21 E. coli strains. The molecular masses of the mature proteins are about 49 kDa and 60 kDa, respectively, for VDE and VDL2. Both enzymes are active with violaxanthin as a substrate.

Opis:
Late glacial and Early Holocene sediment sequences from North ern Estonia were investigated using diatom and pollen analysis and the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dating. The results of diatom analysis indicate that fresh water conditions prevailed during the initial and final phases of the Yoldia Sea in the investigated area. A near-bottom saline water current that penetrated into the Baltic Sea Basin during the brackish phase of the Yoldia Sea spread into the Gulf of Finland at ca. 11 300-11 200 calendar years BP. Coastal upwelling probably caused mixing of the water column and the circulation of brackish water up to the surface incertain near-shore areas in the Gulf of Finland. A slight change in the pollen composition may suggest deterioration in the climate and can be correlated to the Preboreal Oscillation. AMS 14C dates on aquatic plant macrofossils suggest a reservoir ef fect more than 1000 year for the brackish phase of the Yoldia Sea.

Opis:
During the study on the assessment of ecological status of the Lepenci river basin, epilithic diatoms were used. Via this methodology, the authors aimed to standardization the ecological assessment methodology and gradually make it applicable for all river basins of Kosovo. The authors relied on a hypothesis that the epilithic diatom communities can serve as a reliable ecological tool to evaluate the quality of flowing waters in Kosovo. Thirteen water quality indices (IBD, IPS, IDG, DESCY, SLA, IDSE, IDAP, EPID, CEE, WAT, TDI, IDP and SHE) were measured in eight sample-points. From the conducted qualitative analysis, the obtained results showed that the water quality varies from upper parts of the basin (SP1, SP2, SP3 & SP4) characterized with higher water quality towards the lower parts (SP5, SP6 & SP7) where water quality was of the 2nd class and finally in Hani i Elezit (SP8) where the index values showed that its water belongs to the 3rd class. The samples were taken in to 8 sampling sites, in river during year (2017), the Navicula viridula species was the most dominant, along with Cocconeis placentula var. lineate and Diatoma vulgaris. In turn, between August and end of September, the following species were dominant ones: Craticula ambigua, Navicula hintzii, Navicula viridula and Rhoicosphenia abbreviata.
