    Study abroad contexts are assumed by foreign language learners to be the best environment for effective language learning. This article reports on beliefs of first year Polish students of German studies. The collected qualitative data show that Polish students do not differ from other learners with regard to their opinions on study abroad and its benefits (and disadvantages) for speaking German. The article underlines the need to reflect with learners about their beliefs, experiences, and expectations of language learning.

    Tekst stanowi analizę dziennika prowadzonego przez 40 lat przez Mieczysława Rakowskiego, stanowiącego uniwersalne, szeroko używane źródło do najnowszych dziejów Polski. Szczególny nacisk został położony na uwypuklenie zróżnicowanych zmian wprowadzonych przez autora w trakcie przygotowania go do druku w latach 1998–2005, dzięki czemu tekst zawiera gruntowną krytykę tego źródła i formułuje postulaty co do jego badawczego zastosowania na przyszłość.
    The text is an analysis of a journal kept for forty years by Mieczysław Rakowski, presenting a universal, widely used source for the recent history of Poland. Special effort is made to emphasise the various changes introduced by the diary’s author during the preparation of the text for publication in 1998–2005; this made it possible to present a thorough critique of this source and put forward postulates as to its scholarly use in the future.

    Opis:
    Learning journals are widely used in second/foreign language re-search. They are not only tools to gather data but also contribute to optimization of the learning process and help students become more autonomous. The discussion presented here focuses on dialogue journals, which are used for ongoing written interaction between the teacher and learners. The paper provides a terminological basis, gives examples of topics and describes the characteristics of the teacher-student dialogue management. The advantages and disadvantages of dialogue journals are discussed from the didactic perspective. The last part of the paper concerns empirical problems to be taken into account when learning journals are introduced and used.

    Opis:
    The notary Andrzej Cinciała (1825–1898) of Cieszyn left behind his Diary, written in 1846–1853. In his notes, which he kept regularly, almost daily in the early years, we find a detailed description of the activities of both the author and his circle of friends, including those forming the Polish national movement in Cieszyn Silesia. Diary contains numerous apt observations on everyday life, including the author’s opinions about the clergy of the time. The article, which is based on analysis of the contents of Diary, attempts to present issues concerning reception of the work of priests and pastors influencing the educational fate of secondary school pupils from Cieszyn Silesia. It would be a truism to point out that for generations the clergy have served as mentors and arbitrators for certain layers of society. However, contrary to the traditional view put forth by Polish historiography, among them therewere not only charismatic leaders, but also people who avoided honest service.

    W artykule podjęto próbę oceny zawartości materiałów pamiętnikarskich polskich autorów, dotyczących I wojny światowej, pod kątem obecności w nich relacji o zwierzętach. Analizie poddano konteksty, w jakich pojawiają się w zapiskach czworonogi oraz relacje ludzi i zwierząt w szczególnym okresie wojny.
    The aim of the article is to analyze the content of diaries and memoirs by Polish authors dealing with World War I with regard to references to animals. The analysis concerns the contexts in which animals are mentioned and the mutual relationship between people and animals in extraordinary circumstances, in this case in times of war.
