Opis:
The paper describes the crucial significance of Witold Gombrowicz’s Diary in history of the intimate diary genre. The Diary violates the fundamental elements of the genre, introduces literary fiction, and forms complex identity of the speaking subject, which may be called the post-traditional identity. Therefore, the Gombrowicz’s work breaks the autobiographical pact, identified by Philippe Lejeune – author of classical works on autobiographical writing, as an essence of the genre.

Opis:
In this article, I raise issues connected with the history of Polish diary writing since the Middle Ages until the early 20th century. I discuss the process and directions of establishing diary writing a separate branch of historical literature. Texts of historical nature (memoirs or diaries) were referred to by their authors as stories, notes of events, diaries or a course of life. Their origin can be traced back to medieval chronicles describing events that involved the Polish nation, in which the authors shyly included scattered and miniscule autobiographical mentions. Diary writing in Poland began to assume shape as a genre at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. There was a growing number of diaries in which the reality was described with a bias. This was a manifestation of the specific ‘zeitgeist’: the commonplace belief in the historical importance and meaning of the events witnessed or attended by the author, making them worth describing for future generations. Owing to vivid and expressive historical accounts, the 17th century expansive growth of diary writing entered the realm of fine literature. The 18th century brought changes in the methodology of historical sciences, as reflected by the prevalence of memoirs over diaries, and the perception of a memoir as a form of autobiography. The development of diary writing at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries was associated with surmounting the limitations of the class system and the emergence of a modern nation as a socio-cultural structure. In this historical setting, plebeian diaries, authored by ordinary people, were gaining in popularity. Diaries were written by representatives of all classes and social strata, be it aristocracy, urban-based intelligentsia originating from nobility, peasants or workers. In the first half of the 20th century, in addition to diaries written by individuals, practised for centuries, the way was paved for mass diary writing. Writing plebeian diaries was encouraged by scholars and editors of journals. At the same time, an institution of collective and competition diary writing emerged, in which the attitude to history was similar to that advocated by representatives of the Annales schools, namely history seen in connection with everyday life.

Opis:
The article presents the most important research perspective regarding women’s and girls’ diary writing in English, French and Polish. The analysis discusses major works on the women’s autobiographical writing, monographs and collective works on diaries. Contrary to appearances, at the beginning the autobiographical turn in the feminist criticism did not include the diaries written by girls and women – as paraliterary, imperfect texts. On the fringes of the feminist interest in diaries were the French studies (including Philippe Lejeune, the most outstanding researcher in this subject) and still rudimentary studies in Poland. The lack of interest in the Polish personal diaries, it seems, results from the lack of bibliographic studies and an extensive editorial project, which would disclose a great number of texts of significant value for our diary writing hidden in the archives.

Hertha Nathorff’s life story can be seen as a revealing example of the fate of the other Jewish families in Germany during the Nazi era. Through the diary of Hertha Nathorff it is possible to get to know her personal impression, which concerns this period of time. The diary also shows the circumstances under which those German Jews who managed to escape the Nazi regime had to live and the agony that accompanied their decision to leave Germany. Finally, it provides information about the problems encountered by the exiled German Jews. For Hertha Nathorff, her diary was a refuge that enabled her to process the most difficult moments in her life and not to give up hope for her existence. The aim of the article is to illustrate the special role of keeping diaries in the period of dehumanization. It should show the special importance of keeping a diary in the process of maintaining one’s own identity and strengthening one’s self.

The main hypothesis presented in this article is the very existence of the discourse of privacy that is rooted in culture. This research covers the area of Polish contemporary discourse. The author claims that certain parts of the world of discourse consist of specific genres of speech and cultural scripts that determine the subsequent language choices of those who communicate. The author also implies that privacy as a psycho‑social feature is relative and it is revealed in a bipolar (PRIVATE – PUBLIC) structure. She implies that there is the migration of the discourse of privacy manifestations from their natural context („internal world“ of an individual, home, family, friends) to the public discourse. Such transgressive behaviour of participants of the „worlds of texts“ is one of the most important features of postmodern contemporaneity.

The article is devoted to the diaries of Jan Czekanowski, an outstanding Polish anthropologist, who travelled to Africa in the years 1907–1909. Special attention is given here to the narrator’s attitudes. Czekanowski knew Africa primarily as an anthropologist and traveller. He perceived the process of colonization as a weave of economic, political and ideological motives. He was also indignant with colonial exploitation, which he observed mainly in Belgian colonies. However, Czekanowski’s portrait of Africa evokes the concept of orientalism, as defined by Edward W. Said. Its prominent aspect was perceiving the Other through the binary opposition between the East and West. Moreover, in spite of his declared affection for black Africans, the Polish scholar uses Orientalistic and colonial stereotypes which seem consistent with the nineteenth-century trends in travel literature.

The diary of Wacław Sieroszewski – writer and political activist from the Young Poland era, connected with Józef Piłsudski’s political camp – was published by Andrzej Lam in the late 1950s (as Volume 16. of Dzieła [Works] by Sieroszewski) in an abridged edition, mainly due to censorship. It is an example of a personal document, situated at the intersection of fiction, non-fiction, and historical policy. Its analysis shows how historical events and the author’s political perspective modelled his narrative in the diary, thus giving the literary text a hybrid form, which is difficult to unambiguously assign to a single genre.

This article presents an analysis of Maria Baszkircew’s dandyish project on the basis of her Diary (1858–1884). Diagnoses were made mainly in the context of Parnassianism as referred to in Wilde’s idea of life imitating art. The methodological¬ interpretative substructure is Goffman’s concept of self- presentation and Lacanian psychoanalysis. The purpose of these considerations was to present the essence of Baszkircew’s dandyism, and to prove that her aesthetic life project was closely connected with conditioning, which was dictated by her culture and customs. It concludes that her dandyism was a form of fighting for her own identity, liberty and self¬ determination.

The author of the article, inspired by Dariusz Nowacki’s review, proposes a thesis opposite to that of the famous critic, who calls Szczepan Twardoch’s and Jacek Dehnel’s diaries “a show-off of avatars.” In defence of Twardoch’s book, Wieloryby i ćmy [Whales and moths] the author decides to concentrate on its ideological and literary values. Most importantly, he strives to prove that the diaries constitute an original and innovative attempt at developing a genre of intimate diaries and have a multifaceted interpretive potential. The author of Morfina [Morphine] expresses in his diaries a desire for “directing a great life,” understood as a consistent creation of literary works as well as a life imitating literature. The analyses and commentaries included in the article focus on the oppositions and hypostases found in the text, for example, of the world and provincial, history and life, literature and nothingness, settlement and foreignness, life and death, presence and absence, life according to spirit and life according to body, responsibility and its lack.

The article’s subject of interest is the language of the Travel Diary written by the Cossack hetman Pylyp Orlyk from 1720 to 1732 during a trip from Stockholm to Istanbul. The article refers to the so-called “macaronisation”, i.e. the saturation of the text with Latin and/or Italian words and borrowings from other languages, typical of Polish texts of the Baroque period. A large part is devoted to Turkish words because a significant part of Pylyp Orlyk’s journey went through the lands belonging to the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century.
