Opis:
The artificially made kernels from ground wheat grain, commercial wheat starch and wheat proteinaceous α-amylase inhibitors in different proportions were used as feed for adults of the granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius L.). In the case of larvae of the confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum Duv.) and the Mediterranean flour moth (Anagasta kuehniella Zell.) the friable feed mixture were used. The survival of S. granarius adults has not been correlated with the soluble proteins extracted from wheat and amylolytic activity located in this protein fraction. On the other hand the weight of dust (the index of feeding intensity) produced during feeding has depended on the presence of α-amylase and trypsin inhibitors in wheat-based feed. A. kuehniella larvae have not developed at all on feed consisted of 50% wheat starch and 50% of crude a-amylase inhibitors from wheat. The same feed has caused 15.1 days of extension in development time of T. confusum larvae. lt attests to specific native enzymatic apparatus existing in alimentary canals of three damaging grain species which can overcome some obstacles even if extremely highly active insect α-amylase inhibitors were present in feed. However, the sufficient nutrient should be available in feed compounds. Nevertheless, some reduction of insects population can be expected.
Sztuczne ziarna zrobione z handlowej skrobii pszennej i białkowych inhibitorów α-amylaz wymieszanych w różnych proporcjach oraz czyste ziarno pszenicy stanowiły pokarm wołka zbożowego (Sitophilus granaris L.). Dla larw trojszyka ulca (Trbolium confusum Duv.) i mklika mącznego (Anagasta kuchniella Zell.) te same produkty podawano w postaci sypkiej.

Opis:
Nymphaeion alliance vegetation is dominant floating-leaved vegetation in the Danube–Tisza–Danube hydrosystem in northwestern Serbia and comprises Nymphaeetum albae, Nymphaeetum albo-luteae, Nymphoidetum peltatae and Trapetum natantis associations. Comparative analysis of physical-chemical water parameters on localities where these – in most parts of Europe endangered and vulnerable stands – develop showed that most phytocenoses are associated with specific habitat conditions. Of the analyzed water properties, the factors that cause Nymphaeion alliance phytocenoses differentiation are primarily pH, alkalinity and COD-MnO4. Formation of the Nymphaeetum albae stands is significantly associated with the highest values of pH, COD-MnO4 and alkalinity, and the lowest nitrate, nitrite, dissolved and the total phosphorus content values, in comparison to the other studied associations. Nymphoidetum peltatae stands develop in waters characterized by the lowest pH and COD-MnO4, low alkalinity, and the highest nitrate and nitrite values in relation to the other analyzed phytocenoses. Trapetum natantis stands, on the other hand, prefer the warmer sections of the canal network, neutral pH, and the highest values of BOD5, dissolved and total phosphorus. Habitat conditions in which Nymphaeetum albo-luteae stands develop are of the widest range in comparison to other investigated phytocenoses.

Opis:
The ratio of primordium size to the meristem size (P/M ratio) is regarded by some geometrical models of phyllotaxis as the parameter, which determines the quality of spiral and whorled patterns of lateral organ arrangement. This assumption was tested on floral meristems in four genets representing four Magnolia taxa: M. × salicifolia, M. stellata, M. denudata and M. acuminata. In successive zones of Magnolia flower, lateral organs are initiated in specific phyllotactic patterns and at specific values of the meristem and primordia sizes. The elements of perianth, usually positioned in three trimerous whorls, are initiated as large primordia on relatively small meristem. The switch in the identity of primordia, from tepals to stamens is accompanied by an abrupt increase in the size of the meristem and decrease in the primordia size. Small values of P/M ratio and frequent occurrence of qualitative transformations of phyllotaxis contribute to the exceptionally rich spectrum of spiral patterns in androecium zone. New spiral patterns emerge when bigger primordia of carpels are initiated on the meristem, which at the same time starts diminishing in size either abruptly (M. × salicifolia, M. stellata, M. acuminata) or slowly (M. denudata). Spiral patterns identified in gynoecia have lower numbers of parastichies than the patterns of androecia and occur in frequencies specific for the genet. Although noted ranges of the meristem and primordia sizes, justify the occurrence of phyllotactic patterns observed in successive zones of Magnolia flower, they do not explain genet-specific frequencies of the patterns observed in gynoecium zone. The lack of straightforward relationship between frequency of the patterns and P/M ratio in gynoecium suggests that more complex geometrical factors or factors of non-geometrical nature are engaged in determination of Magnolia floral phyllotaxis.

Opis:
Quantitative expressions are presented to describe the effects of temperature and food concentration on stage duration and growth rate of Temora longicornis for each of the model stage groups (N1–N6 – naupliar stages, C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 –the five copepodid stages). The calculations were made on the basis of experimental data from the literature for T. longicornis from the south-eastern and the southern North Sea. Relationships were obtained between the growth parameters and temperature for the 5–10◦C temperature range and food concentrations from 25 mgC m−3 to excess. Also computed was the total mean development time as a function of the above-mentioned parameters, temperature and food availability. The simulations computed here are similar to the experimental results. The growth rates for successive stages were obtained according to the correction of the ‘Moult Rate’ method, which allows the use of mean weights and stage durations. The calculations also suggest that three complete generations of T. longicornis from the Gdańsk Deep (the southern Baltic Sea) can develop during a single year.
