This paper presents an improved Genetic Algorithm to solve the Transportation Network Design Problem (CTNDP) with interactions among different links. The CTNDP is formulated in an optimal design as a bi-level programming model. A key factor in the present approach is the combination of diploid based complex-encoding with meiosis specific features. The novel mutation operator proposed is another improvement that leads to a better robustness and convergence stability. The computational results obtained by comparing the performance of the proposed algorithm and other Genetic Algorithms for a test network demonstrates its better local searching ability, as well as its high efficiency. Finally, suggestions for further research and extensions are given.

Opis:
The continuous-time generalised predictive control (CGPC) is considered in the context of control of continuous-time systems having a transportation delay. It is shown that the basic CGPC design strategy can be given in a form which facilitates a clear discussion of relevant design consequences concerning stability issues. The main results that follow incorporate several solutions to the delay-plant control design problem and a verification of the proposed algorithms in terms of the closed-loop stability.

In this work, the problem of coil design is studied. It is assumed that the structure of the coil is known (i.e., the positions of simple circular coils are fixed) and the problem is to find current distribution to obtain the required magnetic field in a given region. The unconstrained version of the problem (arbitrary currents are allowed) can be formulated as a Least-SQuares (LSQ) problem. However, the results obtained by solving the LSQ problem are usually useless from the application point of view. Moreover, for higher dimensions the problem is ill-conditioned. To overcome these difficulties, a regularization term is sometimes added to the cost function, in order to make the solution smoother. The regularization technique, however, produces suboptimal solutions. In this work, we propose to solve the problem under study using the constrained Quadratic Programming (QP) method. The methods are compared in terms of the quality of the magnetic field obtained, and the power of the designed coil. Several 1D and 2D examples are considered. It is shown that for the same value of the maximum current the QP method provides solutions with a higher quality magnetic field than the regularization method.

The twenty-first century has brought lots of challenges for people in all spheres, including education. In the new context, traditional approaches often seem ineffective and therefore new tools and methods have to be applied. An alternative approach that might be useful in the given context is design thinking – the approach that originated in architecture, design and art, and nowadays is applied in many fields. It is a human-centered problem-solving approach that may be used in the teaching/learning process to develop twenty-first century skills and enhance creativity and innovation. This paper introduces readers to the origin of design thinking, its attributes and processes as well as its application in pedagogy.

The author is taking the subject matter associated with the contemporary trend of the realization of energy-efficient buildings. It is being observed the simplifying this issue for uncritical implementing of technical devices, which alone in themselves are nothing bad, but their applying don’t have rational ground in many cases, what's more there are lot of attempts of propagate them without taking local environmental conditionings into account. The subject of the article are issues connected with thermo-isolation, the exchange of air with recycling of the warmth, acquiring the solar thermal energy, exploiting the scrap warmth from the air-conditioning, as well as the accumulation of the warmth, with simultaneous minimizing applying technical devices, as well as considering referring to the object conservator's requirements. The aspiration of creating energy self-sufficiency objects should be carried out by implementing architectural-building solutions, assisted with applying technical devices. Turning the order away in search for energy-efficient solutions can lead to second-rate treating the subject of creating space and significant architectural values.

The key ingredient, which provides the strongest impact on success of an innovation process, is the stage of generating new inventive solution ideas, which requires creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Until the beginning of the 2000th, and even still very much today, creative engineering has been random and chaotic as it was not supported by scientifically based methods. As a result, the process has low effectiveness of dealing with situations demanding new inventive solutions. Introduction of TRIZ (Theory of Solving Inventive Problems) has radically changed the situation in many industries. TRIZ provides a structured support to organize engineering creativity based on many years of studies of innovative development of diverse technical systems and technologies. These studies helped to extract and formulate generic patterns of inventive solutions, which can be reused to produce new ideas in a much shorter time period rather than using traditional methods to enhance creative thinking. Although TRIZ has been successfully used in a number of industries, its use in maritime industry has been rather limited, most likely due to the low awareness by maritime engineers. This paper discusses modern TRIZ and presents some of its techniques that can be utilized in maritime engineering.

This paper deals with the design of radar receive filters jointly optimized with respect to sidelobe energy and sidelobe peaks via Pareto-optimal theory. We prove that this criterion is tantamount to jointly minimizing two quadratic forms, so that the design can be analytically formulated in terms of a multi-objective optimization problem. In order to solve it, we resort to the scalarization technique, which reduces the vectorial problem into a scalar one using a Pareto weight defining the relative importance of the two objective functions. At the analysis stage, we assess the performance of the receive filters in correspondence of different values of the Pareto weight highlighting the performance compromises between the Integrated Sidelobe Level (ISL) and the Peak Sidelobe Level (PSL).

In this paper we propose some extensions of the minimum labelling spanning tree problem. The main focus is on the minimum labelling Steiner tree problem: given a graph G with a color (label) assigned to each edge, and a subset Q of the nodes of G (basic vertices), we look for a connected subgraph of G with the minimum number of different colors covering all the basic vertices. The problem has several applications in telecommunication networks, electric networks, multimodal transportation networks, among others, where one aims to ensure connectivity by means of homogeneous connections. Numerical results for several metaheuristics to solve the problem are presented.

Opis:
The inverse problem of textile material design (IPTMD) aims to determine textile materials with optimum thermal conductivities for the thickness designed in terms of the thermal comfort requirements of the wearer. In this paper, an IPTMD is presented on the basis of the physical nature of steady heat and moisture transfer in a human body-clothing-environment system. A globally convergent algorithm, the modified particle collision algorithm (MPCA), is proposed and its validity is verified. The MPCA is applied to solve the IPTMD for single-layer textile materials at low temperature. Numerical simulation results of the IPTMD proved the suitability of the IPTMD and effectiveness of the MPCA in solving complex global optimisation problems. The encouraging results indicate that the modelling method above and optimisation algorithm can be used for further applications.
Problem inwersyjny projektowania materiałów włókienniczych ma na celu określenie materiałów włókienniczych z optymalną przewodnością cieplną dla grubości zaprojektowanej z uwzględnieniem komfortu termicznego i wygody użytkownika. W pracy przedstawiono problem na podstawie stałego przepływu ciepła i wilgotności pomiędzy ciałem człowieka, odzieżą a środowiskiem zewnętrznym. Zaprezentowano i zweryfikowano prawidłowość algorytmu zbieżnego, algorytmu zderzenia cząstek modyfikowanych, który jest stosowany w celu rozwiązania problemu dla jednowarstwowych materiałów włókienniczych w niskich temperaturach. Wyniki symulacji numerycznych problemu dowodzą jego przydatności i skuteczności algorytmu w rozwiązywaniu złożonych problemów optymalizacji. Zachęcające rezultaty wskazują, że powyższy sposób modelowania i algorytm optymalizacji mogą być używane do różnych zastosowań.

The problem of finite, partially glued to a fixed rigid base rod longitudinal vibrations damping by optimizing adhesive structural topology is investigated. Vibrations of the rod are caused by external load, concentrated on free end of the rod, the other end of which is elastically clamped. The problem is mathematically formulated as a boundary-value problem for onedimensional wave equation with attenuation and variable controlled coefficient. The intensity of adhesion distribution function is taken as optimality criterion to be minimized. Structure of adhesion layer, optimal in that sense, is obtained as a piecewise-constant function. Using Fourier real generalized integral transform, the problem of unknown function determination is reduced to determination of certain switching points from a system of nonlinear, in general, complex equations. Some particular cases are considered.

Opis:
The maximum subarray problem (MSP) is to the find maximum contiguous sum in an array. This paper describes a method of Kadanes algorithm (the state of the art) optimization for specific data (continuous sequences of zeros or negative real numbers). When the data are unfavourable, the modification of the algorithm causes a non significant performance loss (1% > decrease in performance). The modification does not improve time complexity but reduces the number of elementary operations. Various experimental data sets have been used to evaluate possible time efficiency improvement. For the most favourable data sets an increase in efficiency of 25% can be achieved.
Problem najwiekszej podtablicy to inaczej znalezienie podciągu, którego suma na największą wartość. Artykuł opisuje optymalizację algorytmu Kadane dla specyficznych danych (z powtarzającymi się ciągami zer lub liczb negatywnych). W przypadku niekorzystnych danych wejściowych zaproponowa modyfikacja nieznacznie spowalnia działanie algorytmu (mniej niż 1% szybkości działania). Ulepszenie algorytmu nie zmienia rzędu asymptotycznego tempa wzrostu, lecz zmniejsza ilość elementarnych operacji. Eksperymenty wykazały, że dla sprzyjających danych możemy zmniejszyć efektywny czas działania algorytmu o 25%.

Currently, the design of garment styles is weakly supporting the MWD concept. It is kept fixed during all its very changeable manufacturing process, thereby increasing pre- and post-consumer fabric wastes. To improve the situation the final values of construction parameters which influence fabric use efficiency should be determined for every unique production order only in the garment manufacturing process. Four garment styles were tested to see how light changes in their width and length influence fabric use efficiency. Even minimal reduction of these parameters can give noticeable fabric savings. Different values of these parameters create slightly different shapes of pattern pieces, and with it, give a huge number of new possibilities to create more efficient production markers. The authors found a way how to make the garment designing process more efficient, as well as, to create a “virtual bridge” between garment designing and the manufacturing phase. Both improvements could give serious benefits: reduced fabric use and product price, as well as, reduced pre- and post-consumer textile material wastes.

The optimal control problems and a weight minimization problem are considered for elastic three-layered plate with inner obstacle and friction condition on a part of the boundary. The state problem is represented by a variational inequality and the design variables influence both the coefficients and the set of admissible state functions. We prove the existence of a solution to the above-mentioned problem on the basis of a general theorem on the control of variational inequalities. Next, the approximate optimization problem is proved on the basis of the general theorem for the continuous problem. When the mesh/size tends to zero, then any sequence of appropriate solutions converges uniformly to a solution of the continuous problem. Finally, the application to the optimal design of unilaterally supported of rotational symmetrical load elastic annular plate is presented.

This article outlines the main tenets and the working cycle of Design Thinking, which is a problem-solving methodology. We argue that this methodology helps train qualities and skills that are particularly beneficial for students of translator education programmes. We recommend Design Thinking for translation teachers who subscribe to post-positivist, constructivist and other problem-based, participatory and collaborative educational approaches. The latter part of the article presents examples of classroom activities developed with the use of Design Thinking methodology. The activities focus mostly on communicative interactions between participants, since we believe that the major advantage of Design Thinking for the translation classroom is that it offers a structured scaffolding to improve classroom communication.

The solutions to the Rational Covariance Extension Problem (RCEP) are parameterized by the spectral zeros. The rational filter with a specified numerator solving the RCEP can be determined from a known convex optimization problem. However, this optimization problem may become ill-conditioned for some parameter values. A modification of the optimization problem to avoid the ill-conditioning is proposed and the modified problem is solved efficiently by a continuation method.
