Opis:
The analysed permanent magnet disc motor (PMDM) is used for direct wheel drive in an electric vehicle. Therefore there are several objectives that could be tackled in the design procedure, such as an increased efficiency, reduced iron weight, reduced copper weight or reduced weight of the permanent magnets (reduced rotor weight). In this paper the optimal design of PMDM using a multi-objective genetic algorithm optimisation procedure is performed. A comparative analysis of the optimal motor solution and its parameters in relation to the prototype is presented.

In 2011, Germany conducted the first census after the reunification. In contrast to a classical census, a register-assisted census was implemented using population register data and an additional sample. This paper provides an overview of how the sampling design recommendations were set up in order to fulfil legal requirements and to guarantee an optimal but still flexible source of information. The aim was to develop a design that fosters an accurate estimation of the main objective of the census, the total population counts. Further, the design should also adequately support the application of small area estimation methods. Some empirical results are given to provide an assessment of selected methods. The research was conducted within the German Census Sampling and Estimation research project, financially supported by the German Federal Statistical Office.

Opis:
Dynamic designs for ship propulsion shafting can be categorised as complex multi-disciplinary coupling systems. The traditional single disciplinary optimisation design method has become a bottleneck, restricting the further improvement of shafting design. In this paper, taking a complex propulsion shafting as the object, a dynamic analysis model of the propeller-shafting-hull system was established. In order to analyse the coupling effect of propeller hydrodynamics on shafting dynamics, the propeller’s hydrodynamic force in the wake flow field was calculated as the input for shafting alignment and vibration analysis. On this basis, the discipline decomposition and analysis of the subdisciplines in design of shafting dynamics were carried out. The coupling relationships between design variables in the subdisciplines were studied and the Multi-disciplinary Design Optimisation (MDO) framework of shafting dynamics was established. Finally, taking the hollowness of the shaft segments and the vertical displacement of bearings as design variables, combined with the optimal algorithm, the MDO of shafting dynamics, considering the coupling effect of the propellershafting-hull system, was realised. The results presented in this paper can provide a beneficial reference for improving the design quality of ship shafting.

Opis:
The paper proposes a design procedure for the creation of a robust and effective hybrid algorithm, tailored to and capable of carrying out a given design optimisation task. In the course of algorithm creation, a small set of simple optimisation methods is chosen, out of which those performing best will constitute the hybrid algorithm. The simplicity of the method allows implementing ad-hoc modifications if unexpected adverse features of the optimisation problem are found. It is postulated to model a system that is smaller but conceptually equivalent, whose model is much simpler than the original one and can be used freely during algorithm construction. Successful operation of the proposed approach is presented in two case studies (power plant set-point optimisation and waveguide bend shape optimisation). The proposed methodology is intended to be used by those not having much knowledge of the system or modelling technology, but having the basic practice in optimisation. It is designed as a compromise between brute force optimisation and design optimisation preceded by a refined study of the underlying problem. Special attention is paid to cases where simulation failures (regardless of their nature) form big obstacles in the course of the optimisation process.

Roll-on Roll-of (Ro-Ro) transport is one of the primary options EU policy is focusing on for developing intermodal transport and MOS initiatives, aimed at reducing road transport (especially trucks). In line with EU guidelines, this study proposes an integrated and optimized network scheme for the maritime Ro-Ro freight services currently operating in the Italian Tyrrhenian area to improve the overall supply of shipping services. The methodological approach used is based on the integration of the timetables and frequencies of existing freight shipping services using an original mathematical model that assigns demand flows to the network while trying to minimize a multi-objective function composed of a weighted sum of travel times and tariffs. Quantitative results show the positive impact generated by rescheduling and coordinating liner shipping and demonstrate how a ‘Tyrrhenian network system' considered as a whole would be more attractive than the single services taken collectively.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate possibilities of improving performance characteristics of light gyroplane, as well to propose new or improved solutions enhancing performance of this type of rotorcraft. The study has been conducted based on computational methods of Computational Fluid Dynamics, Flight Dynamics, Computer Aided Design and Optimisation. Results of the research confirm that using advanced computational methods it is possible to improve significantly the performance characteristics of light gyroplane. It can be chieved both through optimisation of the main rotor design and flight control strategy. An unconventional approach to rotorcraft optimisation has been presented, distinguishing by the fact that the objective was calculated based on computer imulations of selected states of gyroplane flight. One of the optimised main rotors had already been examined during flight tests, which confirmed its good performance‑and‑exploitation properties and its advantage over classic gyroplane rotors. Developed by the author the family of gyroplane airfoils is a valuable alternative to classic airfoils utilised so far. The same applies to the blades built based on those airfoils. In particular, it concerns the unconventional design of the rotor blade of span-variable: chord and relative thickness. The developed methodology of numerical optimisation of flight‑control strategy during the jump takeoff of the gyroplane presents an original approach to those problems and may be valuable tool supporting gyroplane-pilot training.
Prace badawcze przeprowadzono w oparciu o metody Obliczeniowa Mechaniki Płynów, Mechaniki Lotu, Komputerowego Wspomagania Projektowania i Optymalizacji Inżynieryjnej. Opracowana przez autora rodzina dedykowanych profili wiatrakowcowych stanowi konkurencyjną alternatywę w stosunku do klasycznych profili aerodynamicznych stosowanych zazwyczaj do konstrukcji łopat wiatrakowca. To samo odnosi się do łopat wirnika nośnego zbudowanych w oparciu o nowo zaprojektowane profile. W szczególności dotyczy to konstrukcji niekonwencjonalnych łopat wirnika charakteryzujących się zmiennymi wzdłuż rozpiętości: cięciwą i względną grubością przekrojów łopaty. Opracowana metodologia numerycznej optymalizacji strategii kontroli lotu podczas bezrozbiegowego startu wiatrakowca, prezentuje oryginalne podejście do tego typu problemów i może stanowić cenne narzędzie wspomagające proces szkolenia pilotów wiatrakowców.

As the considered problem is hard, we discuss and propose greedy randomised adaptive search procedure (GRASP) based solution method. GRASP is an iterative randomised sampling technique which combines adaptive randomised greedy function in constructing initial solution with local search optimisation. The effectiveness of the method is illustrated by means of a numerical study. We compare the GRASP results with results for both exact and heuristic methods obtained in previous research concerning topological design problem.

The paper addresses the generic topological network design problem and considers the use of various heuristic algorithms for solving the problem. The target of the optimisation is to determine a network structure and demand allocation pattern that would minimise the cost of the network, which is given by fixed installation costs of nodes and links and variable link capacity costs described bv linear or concave functions. Input data for the optimisation consists of a list of potential node and link locations and their costs and a set of demands defined between the nodes. Since the problem is known to be NP-hard. The use of specialised heuristic algorithms is proposed. The presented approaches encompass original ideas as well as selected methods described in literature and their enhancements. The algorithms are based on the following ideas and methods: shifting of individual flows, local and global restoration of flows from chosen links or nodes, Yaged algorithm for finding local minima, Minoux greedy algorithm, simulated allocation and genetic algorithms. Efficiency of each of the proposed methods is tested on a set of numerical examples.

Innovative exhaust system for light turboprop airplane has been developed and optimised. Apart from the basic function of removing exhaust from turboprop engine, the system supports cooling of the engine bay. To do this, the system removes hot air from the engine bay, utilising the ejector-pump effect, where the exhaust stream generates under-pressure, sucking the hot air through the ejector slot and removes the air together with the exhaust gases. The design and optimisation of the exhaust system has been conducted based on computational methods of Computer-Aided Design and Optimisation and Computational Fluid Dynamic. Three-dimensional analysis of flow around the airplane (including effect of propeller) and inside the exhaust system was conducted by application of URANS solver ANSYS FLUENT. Using these software the trajectories of exhaust particles, both inside the exhaust ducts and outside the airplane, have been determined. Parametric model of the designed exhaust system has been developed using the in-house software PARADES. As design parameters the diameter, length and direction of exhaust ducts as well as few parameters describing a shape of the ejector, have been established. The optimisation process aimed at designing of the exhaust system, which removes the exhaust gases possibly far away from the airframe, especially during a descent flight of the airplane. Additional objectives were maximisation of the mass flow rate of hot air sucked through the ejector and minimisation of the drag force generated by external part of the exhaust system. The optimised exhaust system should have also fulfilled requirements of permissible total-pressure losses inside the exhaust ducts. The optimised exhaust system has been implemented on the light turboprop airplane and validated during flight tests.

A modern main rotor, dedicated to the ultralight helicopter, has been designed and optimised. Due to assumed simplicity of the rotor design and taking into account some technological constraints, the principal purpose of the presented research was to design a dedicated airfoil which, when applied on the main-rotor blades, would influence satisfactory improvement in a performance of the ultralight helicopter, especially in fast flight. The design and optimisation process has been supported by a computational methodology. The in-house software has been used for direct and inverse design of shapes of the rotor-blade airfoils. Aerodynamic properties of the airfoils as well as the helicopter main rotor were evaluated based on both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional flow simulations conducted using the ANSYS FLUENT software that was used to solve U/RANS equations. Based on the results of conducted computational simulations of fast flight of the ultralight helicopter, it can be concluded that the newly designed main rotor, compared to the baseline, may give certain improvement in helicopter performance in fast flight. In addition, the application of this newly designed rotor may lead to increase of a maximum speed of the helicopter flight, due to the greater lift force achievable by this rotor on the retreating blade, which is favourable from point of view of keeping of a lateral balance of the helicopter in fast flight.

Opis:
New concept of innovative, high-efficiency wind turbine has been developed and optimised. The turbine consists of a rotor with a vertical axis of rotation and a ring-palisade casing, which task is to deflect wind stream so that it flows perpendicularly to the rotor plane. The main advantage of such configuration of a wind turbine is that due to the vertical axis of symmetry, it works independently on the wind direction and it does not need any mechanism directing it towards the wind. The greatest challenge when designing the turbine was to minimise losses of energy of the wind stream deflected by 90 degrees by the ring vanes of the casing. This involved optimisation of number, shapes and mutual positions of the ring vanes. The whole optimisation works were done based on computational methods of Computer-Aided Design and Optimisation and Computational Fluid Dynamic. Subsequent variants of the ring-palisade casing were designed using an appropriately adapted in-house-software package supporting design and optimisation of multi-element airfoils. Three-dimensional analysis of flow around and inside the casing was conducted by application of commercial URANS solver ANSYS FLUENT. Eventually designed turbine is characterised by high efficiency in respect of acceleration of the wind stream. On the basis of computer simulations, it is estimated that the average velocity of air stream flowing through the rotor plane may be higher than the wind speed by about 45%. Extent of the acceleration of the wind stream partially depends on the number of ring vanes comprising a casing. Depending on specificity of application, this number of ring vanes may be chosen by a compromise between performance and dimensions of the turbine. The proposed wind turbine seems to be very promising solution, especially within the area of small and moderate renewable-energy sources, which in particular may be placed directly in residential-building areas, e.g. on the roofs of houses. This type of renewable-energy sources may also be successfully used in the field of environmentally friendly transport, in the process of producing hydrogen as fuel for fuel cell vehicles.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Using the concepts of Ulrich’s theory of supportive design and Malkin’s healing environment, an eye tracking experiment was designed in order to measure respondents’ reactions while looking at visualisations of various interiors, with the aim of verifying whether certain parameters of an interior are related to emotional reactions in terms of positive stimulation, and the sense of security and comfort. Materials and method. 12 boards were designed, incorporating standard features of an interior, i.e. (1) proportions, (2) lighting, (3) colour scheme of a room, as well as (4) the colours and spatial arrangement of furnishings. Respondents’ reactions were recorded with an eye tracker Tobii TX300 and supplemented by self-descriptions of emotional reactions. Results. The results showed that the varying spatial and colour arrangements presented in the interior visualisations provoked different emotional responses, confirmed by pupil reaction parameters, as measured by the eye tracking device. Conclusions. Architectural space can have a diverse emotional significance and impact on an individual’s emotional state. This is an important conclusion from the point of view of optimising and creating the so-called supportive and healing environment. The results have implications for the interpretation of the pupil diameter as an index of emotional reactions to different architectural space visualisations. Testing the eye tracker as a method helpful in diagnosing the emotional reactions to features of the interior is justified, and can provide an effective tool for early diagnosis of the impact of architectural space on the well-being of individuals. It can also be a good form of testing the emotional significance of architectural designs before they are implemented.

Opis:
The inverse problem of textile material design (IPTMD) aims to determine textile materials with optimum thermal conductivities for the thickness designed in terms of the thermal comfort requirements of the wearer. In this paper, an IPTMD is presented on the basis of the physical nature of steady heat and moisture transfer in a human body-clothing-environment system. A globally convergent algorithm, the modified particle collision algorithm (MPCA), is proposed and its validity is verified. The MPCA is applied to solve the IPTMD for single-layer textile materials at low temperature. Numerical simulation results of the IPTMD proved the suitability of the IPTMD and effectiveness of the MPCA in solving complex global optimisation problems. The encouraging results indicate that the modelling method above and optimisation algorithm can be used for further applications.

Opis:
Width design of the urban rail transit stations circulation facilities is a vital issue. The existing width design approach failed in fully considering the essential factors such as fluctuation in passengers’ arrival process, fluctuation and state-dependence in passengers walking speed and the blocking when passengers’ demand exceeds the capacity of facilities. For this purpose, a PH-based simulation-optimization approach is proposed that fully considers the fluctuation, the state-dependence, Level of Service (LOS) and blocking effect. This novel approach provides automatic reconfiguration of the widths of circulation facilities by a concurrent implementation of a PH-based Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) model and the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The proposed PH-based simulation-optimization approach and the existing design approaches based on the exponential and deterministic models are applied to design the widths of circulation facilities. The results reveal that the circulation facilities designed by the proposed approach have larger widths. Similarly, increase in the SCV of arrival interval results in increasing the widths designed by the proposed approach increase while the widths of the other two approaches stay the same. The width designed of the proposed approach increase at faster rate than that of the other two approach when the passengers’ arrival rate increases.

Opis:
The paper deals with a method for configuring flow meter locations and reducing valve set-up points. These positions are optimal for acquiring information that is needed for fault detection and locating small leakage points in water distribution systems. The method is based on systematic search and genetic algorithms. For both approaches, the objective/fitness function was created with the use of sensitivity measures and optimal experimental design criterions. The verification of the delineated approach was conducted for a real-world water supply network. The achieved results confirmed the correctness of the proposed method.

Opis:
The oil and gas industry nowadays is challenged by dealing with nonconventional reserves and offshore environments. Decision-making associated with projects in the petroleum sector has to handle various technological issues, risks, and uncertainty. The Smart Fields approach was introduced to cope with complicated production conditions and make the production of hydrocarbons economically efficient. A significant part of this approach is proactive planning which implies taking into account the uncertainty, or lack of knowledge of the recoverable reserves, future hydrocarbon prices and various operational issues inherent in the projects. In this study, a multi-stage stochastic programming approach is employed to cover the relevant engineering issues of oilfield development and petroleum production while addressing the geophysical uncertainty related to the developed deposit. The proposed model covers such aspects as well drilling, gathering pipeline infrastructure planning, capacity selection for the infrastructure and the processing units, as well as planning the production operations with consideration of artificial lift efficiency. The model aims to optimise the entire field lifecycle, given the chosen planning criterion, that is an economic criterion of the project’s net present value. The contribution of the developed model to the area of planning in the petroleum industry is the detailed consideration of the technology: the flows and pressures in the planned infrastructure, reservoir behaviour, and the artificial lift performance. The goal of including these technological details is to apprehend the economic tradeoff between investments, operating costs and the prospective revenues, given the lack of knowledge of the geophysical properties of the developed deposit. The stochastic modelling implemented in this study is relevant to the development projects in nonconventional environments, where several deposits of various sizes are present; however, not each deposit's properties get to be studied in detail.

Opis:
This paper presents the multi-criteria design parameters of the optimisation of the ROPAX ferry using sea-keeping characteristics and additional wave resistance. The design criteria were formed using the method based on deterministic scenario and the partial objective functions were determined as artificial neuron networks. The design parameters' optimisation was carried out with the Pareto method. The best design variants were chosen using the elements of fuzzy logic that allowed, among other things, to present design quality with linguistic variables. This approach allowed choosing the best variant concerning all criteria at the same time.
