In 2018 during the 72nd session of the Maritime Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) IMO adopted its initial strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the ships to meet the Paris Agreement Goals, 2015. This is considered as a major milestone in formulizing a clear strategy by IMO towards its objective of reducing the global GHG emissions from the ships. The strategy had two primary objectives: the first was to decrease total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. The second objective was to promote the phasing out of GHG emissions entirely. In 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) conducted a study which revealed that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping had increased by 9.6%. The rise in global maritime trade was identified as the main factor behind this increase. IMO's 2020 study also concluded that reducing GHG emissions by focusing only on energy-saving technologies and ship speed reduction would not be enough to meet the IMO's 2050 GHG reduction target. Therefore, greater attention needs to be given to the use of low-carbon alternative fuels. To understand the effectiveness of currently available technologies in reducing GHG emissions from ships, a literature survey was conducted in this study. The survey examined a range of related articles published between 2018 and 2022. This study aimed to identify the current stage and the quantity of literature available on various technologies and, more importantly, serve as a decision-making support tool for selecting a technology under specific circumstances in a quantitative manner. The technologies were divided into four groups: those that utilize fossil fuels, those that use renewable energy, those that use fuel cells, and those that use low-carbon or alternative fuels. The literature survey was conducted using Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar. The results of this study will also help to identify clear research gaps in comparing the effectiveness of various available technologies to reduce GHG emissions. Ultimately, the aim is to develop a comprehensive strategy that can be used to reduce GHG emissions from shipping and contribute to the global fight against climate change.

The investment policy applied by seaport authorities has a great impact on the state of the natural environment in coastal regions. Unfortunately, in many cases, their environmental efforts are limited to the issues which are defined by the applicable legal regulations determined by International Maritime Organization, the Organization of United Nations and the European Commission etc. However, in recent years we can observe significant improvement in this area, especially in the seaports of Northern Europe. They often decide on highly capital-intensive pro-ecological investments allowing to reduce the level of pollution emitted from cruise ships during their handling in ports, such as e. g. the opportunity of connecting vessels to the shore-side energy supply systems. Various solutions in this area are currently used in the world. The ports in Northern Europe are currently the leaders in this area. The use of such solutions is cost-intensive, but it significantly reduces the level of pollution emitted by ships into the environment, and the level of noise and vibration caused by engines. This paper aims to assess the seaports' involvement in Northern Europe in the preparation of seaport infrastructure enabling cruise ships to be connected to the onshore power supply systems. The article contains the results of surveys conducted with the use of two methods to adjust the research technique to the respondents’ needs, i.e. CASI (Computer-Assisted Self Interviewing) and EMS (Electronic Mail Survey). The empirical research was conducted among the seaports in Northern Europe. The results of the survey may be of interest to seaport authorities and cruise ship owners.

Currently, the design of garment styles is weakly supporting the MWD concept. It is kept fixed during all its very changeable manufacturing process, thereby increasing pre- and post-consumer fabric wastes. To improve the situation the final values of construction parameters which influence fabric use efficiency should be determined for every unique production order only in the garment manufacturing process. Four garment styles were tested to see how light changes in their width and length influence fabric use efficiency. Even minimal reduction of these parameters can give noticeable fabric savings. Different values of these parameters create slightly different shapes of pattern pieces, and with it, give a huge number of new possibilities to create more efficient production markers. The authors found a way how to make the garment designing process more efficient, as well as, to create a “virtual bridge” between garment designing and the manufacturing phase. Both improvements could give serious benefits: reduced fabric use and product price, as well as, reduced pre- and post-consumer textile material wastes.

This report examines the feasibility and impact of retrofitting the bulbous bow on a general cargo ship, in terms of the energy efficiency operational index (EEOI), in the areas of Western Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Three ship forms were developed and analysed: with a bulbous bow, without a bulbous bow, and with a modified bulbous bow. The goal in developing the ship forms and conducting the analysis was to achieve minimal differences in the ship’s characteristics with the same volumetric displacement, aided by PolyCAD software. A route was selected between two ports: Varna and Rotterdam. The labour intensity of the bulbous bow retrofitting process was evaluated and approximate values of labours costs and cost for the task were determined. The results obtained for resistance during ship motion, EEOI, and fuel consumption reductions, or increases, were compared against the retrofitting values. The return cost of retrofitting is evaluated and measured in terms of fuel saved.

The building information modeling (BIM) method is one of the newest methods that has been widely used in many parts of the building business, including energy management. The aim of this research is to analyze the most holy theotokos in order to find the best set of modifications that result in an optimal energy cost. The analysis was conducted through the use of building information modeling (BIM) technology and the associated programmers such as Auto Desk Revit 2020 and Auto Desk Insight 360, in order to determine the optimal strategies by which the most applicable alternative construction materials and procedures are considered in order to obtain an environmentally and economically sustainable most holy theotokos. Applying this analyze to the most holy theotokos revealed that many alternatives are capable of making a tangible reduction in the cost of electrical energy consumption and the cost of fuel for generators. Such reductions are noticed when altering in the optimum manner. The alteration of construction materials for walls and roofs also reduces the cost of electrical energy consumption and fuel for generators. The results show that changing the plug load efficiency in the optimal manner reduces the cost of electrical energy consumption by approximately 933913 US dollar ($), and changing the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) reduces the cost of fuel energy consumption by approximately 13522 US Dollar ($). Green building studio (GBS) is a tool that helps in the early stages of a project to find the best ways to save energy.

The paper proposes an alternative approach to the dissemination of the mass unit in the context of the new definition of the kilogram. Considering the fact that redefinition allows mass to be directly realized at any value, the paper presents a model of the dissemination of mass which can be used for diferent series in grams, where the measurements are performed in the downward direction, but using 1 g as the reference standard (whose mass value is assumed to be determined after the redefinition using the capacitive or electrostatic techniques). The subdivision method presented (suitable for 1 weights) has as its starting point the approach used by Mihailov-Romanowski for the calibration of series in kilograms which uses an orthogonal system of equations. Thus, according to this method, a solution for obtaining the orthogonality of a system can be the use as defining standard of the ratio between the mass having the highest nominal value in the set and the standard (unit). The results obtained for a set of weights from 10 to 1 g using the subdivision method, in accordance with the Mihailov-Romanowski principle, are validated with those obtained with the multiplication method, where the measurements start from 1 to 10 g, as in the case of the kilogram series. The mass values obtained with both methods are equal, while the estimated uncertainties are slightly diferent, yet insignificant. The results obtained previously for the same sequence of weights using the traditional dissemination method, where the 1 kg standard is used as reference, are also presented in the paper. The results show that only three weights out of six have a mass value insignificantly diferent by 1 × 10-4 mg compared to those obtained with the methods presented in this article, but, in terms of uncertainty, there are some diferences. The way of disseminating the mass unit presented in this article can be extended to other diferent sequences of nominal values such as: (5 . . . 1) g, (20 . . . 1) g, (50 . . . 1) g or (500 . . . 100) g if the reference standard is 100 g.

When designing structures, it is often necessary to re-analyse a structure that is different in some parts from the original one. As real structures are often complex, their analysis is therefore very challenging. In such cases, reanalysis methods are advantageously used. The aim of this paper is to approach the problem of solving the constructions using reanalysis method in which the time taken in solving algebraic equations is reduced. In particular, the purpose of this work is to demonstrate on a chosen system the time savings and the advantages of the chosen direct efficient reanalysis method for a given design problem. A basic condition for meeting these criteria is the modernization of computational procedures in the mechanics of compliant solids.

The aim of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce by half the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by marine ships by 2050, and its vision of the fastest total decarbonisation in the maritime shipping industry within the present century, calls for implementation with various means of decarbonisation. The IMO approaches the process of decarbonisation in two phases. Firstly, short-term, compact projects are to be considered, next, more complex, medium- and long-term solutions should be aimed at. The preferred arrangements to be applied are photovoltaic systems. Their performance depends to a high degree on the solar incidence angle. In the case of a ship swinging as a result of its course in relation to the wave and incidence direction, the incidence angle undergoes significant periodic changes with a significant effect on the power generated by the PV panels. As a result, the total amount of energy produced by the PV panels diminishes. The paper presents experimental research results obtained on the stand that allowed the investigation of PV panels in simulated marine conditions. Two characteristic positions of a PV panel’s rotation axis in relation to the solar rays’ incidence direction were investigated. It was proved for both variants that the rolling period and solar incidence angle affected the power generated by the PV panel.

In the modern world, environmental issues come to the fore. The document of MARPOL for reducing the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere relates to the energy efficiency coefficient EEDI . This coefficient is directly related to the power of the main engine and, accordingly, to the water resistance. The way to reduce the energy efficiency factor EEDI by increasing the relative length \( \frac{L}{ \sqrt[3]{V}} \) of the ship was proposed in this article. To determine the maximum value of the relative length, knowledge of the general strength of the vessel is required. The value of the relative section modulus of an equivalent girder for a small vessel of transitional mode is defined. The result of the graphic solution of two equations is the value of such a relative section modulus. This parameter is required to determine the limiting value of the relative length and to find solutions to reduce the coefficient EEDI . Comparative analysis of the obtained data with the data of the strength and weight of the H-girder with a length similar to the ship was conducted. The formula for determining the limiting value of the relative length was obtained from the equation of general strength. For a preliminary assessment of the future project of the ship, in terms of permissible design accelerations and the possibility of the ship moving against a sea wave of a certain height, a graph was built based on the application of the energy wave criterion EWCand the requirements of various classification societies.

The changes in technology have led to a synchronous change in the clothing design method, as well as media and artistic aesthetics in the same period. The intelligence algorithm is constantly increasing its participation in development and production in the clothing industry. In this study, a variety of intelligent algorithms, including the parameterised numer state algorithm, Generative Adversarial Networks, and style transfer were introduced into the multi-links of clothing product design and development, such as clothing shape, print pattern, texture craft, product vision, and so on. Then, an innovative clothing design method based on the cooperation of the intelligent algorithm and various human functional roles was constructed. The method improves the efficiency of the multiple links of clothing design, such as generating 10000 printing patterns every 72.12 seconds, and completing the migration of 92.7 frames of the garment process style every second. To a certain extent, this study realizes the scale economy of clothing design and reduces its marginal cost through the unlimited computing power brought about by Moore’s law of digital technology, which provides a reference for the exploration of clothing design in the era of industry 4.0.

This paper proposes a method to determine the optimal parameters for the drying of soybean using a kinematic vibration dryer. Among the main parameters of the investigated vibroconveyor are heat and mass transfer, physical and mechanical. The paper presents a mathematical model of the dependence of parameters of the soybean drying process of soybean built based on experimental data obtained by organizing an effective experiment plan with a sufficiently large number of factor levels. To determine the rational parameters for drying soybean, it is important to build the most accurate and adequate mathematical model, which will determine the most accurate values of the required parameters. For this purpose, it is recommended to conduct an experiment with as many levels of factors as possible. The article proposes an experiment established on a dedicated balanced orthogonal plan, which is optimal according to the D-efficiency criterion. Based on the experimental data, an adequate mathematical model of the dependence of the drying characteristics of soybean (moisture of the processed material (%), temperature inside the product layer (°С) on the parameters – vibration amplitude (mm), distance from the conveyor surface (mm), radiation power (Wt), weight (g·min-1). Following the analysis of the constructed mathematical model, optimal parameters of the developed vibroconveyor infrared dryer were substantiated. The main characteristics of the vibroconveryor mechanism of interoperational transportation of bulk products in the working area were also determined, and a technical and economic analysis of the developed oscillatory system was conducted.
W pracy zaproponowano metodę wyznaczania optymalnych parametrów suszenia soi za pomocą suszarki z funkcją kinematycznego wzbudzania drgań. Główne parametry badanego urządzenia to wymiana ciepła i masy oraz właściwości fizyczne i mechaniczne. W celu przeprowadzenia badań zbudowano model matematyczny zależności między wskaźnikami procesu suszenia soi na podstawie danych doświadczalnych uzyskanych poprzez zorganizowanie efektywnego schematu doświadczenia z odpowiednio dużą liczbą poziomów czynników. By określić racjonalne parametry suszenia soi należy zbudować jak najdokładniejszy i adekwatny model matematyczny, który wyznaczy najdokładniejsze wartości wymaganych parametrów. W artykule zaproponowano przeprowadzenie eksperymentu na specjalnie skonstruowanym zrównoważonym planie ortogonalnym, optymalnym według kryterium Defektywności. Na podstawie danych eksperymentalnych opracowano odpowiedni model matematyczny zależności charakterystyki suszenia soi (wilgotność przetwarzanego materiału (%), temperatura wewnątrz warstwy produktu (°С) od parametrów - amplitudy drgań (mm), odległości od powierzchni przenośnika taśmowego (mm), mocy promieniowania (Wt), masy (g·min-1). Analiza zaproponowanego modelu matematycznego pozwoliła uzasadnić optymalne parametry opracowanej wibrosuszarki na podczerwień, główne cechy mechanizmu wibracyjno-falowego do transportu produktów sypkich w obszarze roboczym oraz przeprowadzić analizę techniczno-ekonomiczną opracowanego systemu oscylacyjnego.

Starają się wskazać optymalną drogę do zwalczenia destrukcyjnych nawyków uczniów z obszaru mediów cyfrowych, prezentując rozwiązanie z zakresu designu uważnego opracowane w oparciu o współczesne badania i przesłanki z zakresu edukacji.
The article addresses the topic of the misuse of mobile phones by pupils at school and presents, as a response to this phenomenon, an original project from the field of mindful design. In line with the idea of empathetic design, the authors study the difficulties and needs of pupils and teachers in order to accurately identify the core of the problem. They confront the questions – arising from the chosen design path marked by empathy – which accompanied them during several months of work. Do pupils recognise the problem of the misuse of smartphones at school? Does this issue also affect teachers, and if yes, to what extent? What emotions accompany them? Does external control effectively counter the problem? What design methods and solutions can be applied in effective media education? Drawing on sound research, reports and educational projects, the designers critically analyse the misguided tools and methods, used in existing solutions, as well as the good practice. They combine knowledge from the fields of contemporary education, psychology and design using new technologies. They seek to identify the optimal way to counteract pupils’ destructive digital media habits by presenting a solution from the field of mindful design developed on the basis of contemporary research and educational premises.

Every year, the dynamics of implementation of projects aimed at improving the efficiency of energy use is gradually increasing at different levels and in different industries. It has spread in the areas of design, modernization and reconstruction of energy-efficient buildings and structures, design and construction of elements of industrial infrastructure, and technological production processes. Introduction of such projects is a priority for enterprises and companies of various types of economic activity. Thus, the leading industries develop strategies to improve environmental safety and energy efficiency - shipping is no exception, where the process of improving energy efficiency is carried out through various mechanisms, ultimately leading to a reduction in emissions of pollutants, but having a negative impact on the performance of the commercial operation of the ship. Problems of ensuring energy efficiency along with increasing requirements for environmental safety of transport and strengthening the responsibility of shipowners become the focus of research of modern theory and practice of operation of means of maritime transport. The issues of improvement of universal principles of energy efficiency within individual shipping companies and development of tools for economic analysis of energy efficiency of own fleet, search for new ways of forming professional competencies of ship crew members in the field of energy efficiency continue to be topical as well.

W artykule przybliżono wybrane rozwiązania architektoniczne mające wpływ na efektywność energetyczną budynków wielorodzinnych blisko zeroenergetycznych – BWBZE. Na podstawie szczegółowych analiz 15 obiektów zrealizowanych w klimacie zbliżonym do polskiego wyłoniono strategie mające bezpośrednie zastosowanie w zintegrowanym procesie projektowym. Wskazano zarówno elementy i cechy, które można uznać za tendencje, jak i przypadki szczególne zrealizowanych BWBZE. Autorzy mają nadzieję, że opisane zagadnienia staną się przyczynkiem do zmian w projektowaniu zabudowy wielorodzinnej na miarę XXI wieku w Polsce.
The article presents chosen technological solutions that affect the energy efficiency of multi-family zero-energy buildings – MFZEB. Based on detailed analyzes of 15 buildings built in a climate zone similar to Polish zone, strategies that have direct application in the integrated design process were selected. Both elements and features that can be considered as trends as well as specific cases of MFZEB were indicated. Authors hope that the described problems will contribute to changes in the design of multi-family housing for the 21ˢᵗ century in Poland.

ObjectivesThe proper porthole angle contributes to relieving the operation fatigue and improving the efficiency of oceanauts. In this study, the authors explored the effect of 3 different porthole longitudinal positions on the oceanauts’ back muscles using surface electromyography (sEMG) analysis, and the characteristics of the perceived body comfort was obtained.Material and MethodsOverall, 40 healthy participants were recruited to perform tasks in a simulated cabin environment. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from the trapezius medius, lower trapezius, and erector spinal muscles for porthole angles of –5°, –15°, and +15°, relative to the horizontal line of sight during a 21-minute experiment. The subject comfort scores were collected at 7, 14 and 21 min. The integrated electromyogram (iEMG) and the root mean square (RMS) of EMG signals, as well as the mean power frequency (MPF), and the mean frequency (MF) were calculated.ResultsThe subjective scores of the +15° porthole at each stage of work are higher than those of the –15° and –5° portholes. The results of iEMG, RMS, MF and MPF all indicated that the +15° porthole design was more conducive to lowering the rate of muscle fatigue, while the –5° and –15° portholes increased the muscle fatigue rate and led to greater fatigue. It was found that the lower trapezius was more prone to fatigue than the trapezius medius and erector spinal muscles. The height, weight and body mass index of the participants were found to negatively correlate with muscles at the +15° porthole, which is highly consistent with the actual situation.ConclusionsThe findings suggested that the +15° position was optimal for delaying the muscle fatigue of the participants and for improving the work efficiency of oceanauts.
