Opis:
Dermatomycoses are the most common form of mycoses, which include superficial infections of the skin, particularly the epidermis, human hair and nails, and animal hair, horns, claws and hooves. Once the etiological agent is identified as keratinolytic filamentous fungus classified as a dermatophyte, the infection is diagnosed as dermatophytosis, also known as ringworm or tinea. These fungi are cosmopolitan pathogens found in many ecological niches such as soil human and animal keratin tissues. This article describes the synthetic clinical picture of infections and the results of research related to the treatment of dermatophytoses caused by Microsporum canis in cats. The frequency of isolation of this pathogen from skin lesions is usually higher in cats than in dogs, and more than 90% of dermatophytic lesions in cats and 75% in dogs are etiologically related to this species. A critical factor in the spread of M. canis is the asymptomatic carriage, which is an increasingly common phenomenon in the cat population. Research conducted in recent years shows that up to 50% of people who come into contact with carriers are symptomatically infected. In addition, about 40% of patients with zoonotic infections with the M. canis experience treatment failures and relapses due to drug resistance, premature discontinuation of therapy by the patient, lack of penetration of the drug into the tissues, or its variable bioavailability.

Opis:
Disinfectants for the use in the animals environment are important for the prophylaxis and control of dermatophytoses. They are essential not only in facilities housing a large number of animals, e.g. shelters, veterinary clinics, or farms, but also in apartments and houses where animals, especially cats and dogs, are in close contact with their owners. The choice of a disinfectant should be based on consideration of many factors, e.g. its efficacy, non-toxicity, nonirritation to animal and human skin, its costs, ease of application, and absence of corrosive/damaging effects on surfaces, especially metal or plastic elements of cages and kennels. This article synthetically presents the results of research on the effectiveness of disinfectants against dermatophytes, with particular emphasis on substances that are widely available and can be used in homes by dog and cat owners. Additionally, disinfection methods and strategies for minimization of the risk of the transmission of arthrospores are discussed in the article.

Opis:
Over the last two decades, the number of fungal and fungal-like diseases of animals in both, natural and controlled systems, has increased, most likely as a consequence of environmental changes. Horses may be affected by several fungal diseases, although only some of them, i.e., malassesiosis, dermatophytosis, pythiosis, and aspergillosis are well described. This article reviews the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of superficial equine fungal infections, as a support to early diagnosis and application of targeted therapeutic and preventive strategies. Dermatomycoses or superficial mycoses, are caused by facultative or opportunistic pathogens, responsible for mild inflammatory, usually benign infections, associated with underlying immunocompromised conditions in the host. Yeasts, belonging to the genus Malassezia and dermatophytes, are the most frequently agents of superficial mycoses in horses. In turn, keratomycosis is a fungal infection of the corneal stroma, mainly caused by commensal fungi of the cornea and conjunctiva. Horses are prone to develop keratomycosis, due to the innate immunoprotective deficiencies of the tear film and the prominent conformation of the ocular globe, together with the usually high concentration of fungi in stables. In conclusion, this review of scientific data clearly indicates the need for a broader description of dermatomycosis cases in horses and indepth research in the diagnosis and therapy of these infections.

Opis:
This article aims at the presentation an effective drug for treating dermatophytosis in small animal practice. Paradoxically, despite the progress in medicine, the prevalence of fungal infections is increasing from year to year. At the beginning of the third millennium, the practical therapeutic options are still very limited. Terbinafine is an allylamine drug introduced to the pharmaceutical market at the beginning of the 21st century. It works by inhibiting the squalene epoxidase enzyme in a non-competitive manner, i.e. by blocking the synthesis of 2,3-oxydosqualene, resulting in squalene accumulation and ergosterol depletion. Terbinafine reaches the stratum corneum and hair relatively quickly, mainly through secretion into sebum, and maintains high concentrations quite long after treatment discontinuation due to its strong adherence to keratin. Scientific reports indicate the high effectiveness of the drug in the treatment of dermatophytosis in dogs and cats. The recommended dosage of terbinafine is 30–40 mg/kg given with food every 24 hours, for 2–3 weeks. The drug is well tolerated and the reported adverse effects are rare and mild. Furthermore, no drug interactions with terbinafine have been described. These properties place terbinafine in the leading position for the preferred treatment of dermatophytosis in dogs and cats.

Opis:
Changing environment is a reason, that many saprotrophic fungi became opportunists and in the end also maybe a pathogenic. Host specific adaptation is not so strong among fungi, so there are many common fungal pathogens for people and for animals. Animals suffering from dermatomycosis are well recognize as source of human superficial mycoses. Breeding of different exotic animals such as parrots, various Reptiles and Amphibians, miniature Rodents and keeping them as a pets in the peoples houses, have become more and more popular in the recent years. This article is shortly presenting which animals maybe a potential source of fungal infections for humans. Looking for the other mycoses as systemic mycoses, especially candidiasis or aspergilosis there are no data, which allow excluding sick animals as a source of infection for human, even if those deep mycoses have endogenic reactivation mechanism. Immunocompromised people are in high−risk group when they take care of animals. Another important source of potentially pathogenic, mostly air−born fungi may be animal use in experimental laboratory work. During the experiments is possible that laboratory workers maybe hurt and these animals and their environment, food and house boxes could be the possible source of microorganisms, pathogenic for humans or other animals. Unusual way to inoculate these potentially pathogens into the skin of laboratory personnel may cause granulomatous, local lesions on their hands.
