Opis:
Women, especially in the peri- and postmenopausal periods, undergo many organic and functional changes. Fluctuation and ultimately a decline in the levels of female reproductive hormones is a long-lasting process, potentially leading to regulatory disorders of the autonomic nervous system. In consequence, postmenopausal women experience depressive mood disorders and more severe anxiety symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms in postmenopausal women in connection with the serum levels of zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), selenium (Se), and copper (Cu). The study involved 102 healthy postmenopausal women. It was divided into two parts: the first part was based on a survey performed using standardized research instruments and a questionnaire developed by the authors. The second part involved a biochemical serum analysis, whose aim was to determine the levels of selected elements. The mean level of anxiety as a state was 4.53±1.79, and the mean level of anxiety as a trait was 3.86±2.03. The mean level of depression according to the Beck Depression Inventory was 6.77±6.82. As many as 77.5% of the women had no depressive symptoms. The mean serum levels of the studied elements were as follows: magnesium (19.41±02.81 mg dm-3), zinc (0.94±0.22 mg dm-3), selenium (0.06±0.03 mg dm-3), and copper (0.40±0.57 mg dm-3). No relationship was demonstrated between the levels of selected elements and the development of depressive and anxiety disorders in the studied postmenopausal women.

Opis:
Objectives The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unseen pressure on healthcare systems in many countries, jeopardizing the mental well-being of healthcare workers. The authors aimed to assess the mental well-being of Finnish healthcare workers from 2 hospital districts (Helsinki University Hospital [HUS] and Social and Health Services in Kymenlaakso [Kymsote]) with differing COVID-19 incidence rates during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020. Material and Methods A total number of 996 healthcare workers (HUS N = 862, Kymsote N = 134) participated in this prospectively conducted survey study during summer 2020. Symptom criteria of self-reported mental health symptoms followed ICD-10 classification, excluding duration criteria. Participants were divided into symptom categories “often/sometimes”, and “rarely/never”. These groups were compared to sociodemographic factors and factors related to work, workload, and well-being. Results The degree of mental health symptoms did not differ between the 2 healthcare districts despite differing COVID-19 incidences (p = 1). The authors observed a significant relationship between self-reported diagnostic mental health symptoms and experiences of insufficient instructions for protection against COVID-19 (in HUS cohort p < 0.001), insufficient recovery from work (p < 0.001), and subjective increased workload (p < 0.001). Conclusions The authors’ results show the importance of well-planned and sufficient instructions for protection from SARS-CoV-2 for healthcare workers, indicating their need to feel safe and protected at work. The workload of healthcare workers should be carefully monitored to keep it moderate and ensure sufficient recovery. Sufficient control of the epidemic to keep the burden of the healthcare system low is vital for healthcare workers’ well-being.

Opis:
Introduction. To-date, the influence of heavy metals such as Pb or Cd on mental functioning, and especially on the occurrence of depressive and anxiety-related disorders, has not been well understood. Objectives. 1) Assessment of Pb and Cd levels in whole blood of postmenopausal women. 2) Assessment of the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms depending on Pb and Cd levels in whole blood of postmenopausal women. Materials and method. The survey-based study involved 198 healthy postmenopausal women from West Pomeranian province in Poland. It was performed using the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The second part of the study was based on biochemical analysis of the levels of heavy metals (Pb, Cd). Results. The mean level of Pb was 19.85 ± 8.99 μg/l and Cd 0.87±0.98 μg/l; these levels were within normal ranges. Analysis of the mean levels of Pb and Cd in whole blood of postmenopausal women in relation to the severity of depressive symptoms did not reveal statistically significant differences. Correlation analysis demonstrated a statistically significant (p<0.05) negative correlation (-0.22) between the level of Pb and the severity of anxiety as a state. Correlations between the levels of Pb and Cd and the severity of anxiety as a trait were not statistically significant. Conclusions. The mean Pb and Cd levels in whole blood of healthy postmenopausal women did not exceed acceptable limits. The study did not confirm a relationship between the levels of selected heavy metals and the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms in healthy women. However, there was a relationship between the level of Pb and the severity of anxiety as a state.

Opis:
It is a well known, that the physical activity promotes mental health. Physically active people relatively rarely suffer from psychosomatic and depressive disorders. It is possible that the differences in gene activity in peripheral blood leukocytes may be associated with depression, especially genes participating in inflammatory response. Thus, the aim of our study was to investigate the levels of IL6 and IL10 mRNA and IL10/IL6 ratio in peripheral blood leukocytes in healthy, physically active individuals. One hundred healthy young men (20-23 years old) participated in this study. All of them declared regular physical activity. Participants were non-smokers, and consumed alcohol occasionally. To access genes expression, 2 ml of venous blood was collected. RNA isolation was performed and then the relative expression of IL6 and IL10 was calculated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (Q-RT-PCR). Pro and anti-inflammatory balance was calculated as 2^relative of IL10/ 2^relative expression of IL6. Low expression of tested genes was found in healthy young men. Mean expression for IL6 was 2^0.051 (n=90) and for IL10 2^0.08 (n=98). Mean ratio IL10/IL6 was 2^1.58. Higher expression of IL10 compared to IL6 may be essential not only for the physical performance but also for the mental health. Diverse reports in the literature may be associated with choosing various control groups, i.e. sedentary or older individuals. It is possible, that measuring the expression of IL6 and IL10 (especially the ratio IL10/IL6) in peripheral blood leukocytes may be useful in the assessment of depressive disorders. Thus, molecular study of active young men can confirm the need for physical activity among people suffering from depression, but further studies are needed, particularly among people with psychosomatic disorders.

Opis:
Dane zebrano w metaanalizach efektów losowych, podając iloraz szans (OR) z odpowiadającymi 95% przedziałami ufności (CI) dla każdej formy krzywdzenia dziecka. Wyniki: Wszystkie formy krzywdzenia dzieci były związane z zaburzeniami depresyjnymi („jakiekolwiek krzywdzenie dziecka” [OR = 2,48, 2,14–2,87]; wykorzystywanie seksualne [OR = 2,11, 1,83–2,44]; przemoc fizyczna [OR = 1,78, 1,57–2,01]; przemoc emocjonalna [OR = 2,35; 1,74–3,18]; zaniedbanie [OR = 1,65; 1,35–2,02]; oraz bycie świadkiem przemocy domowej [OR = 1,68; 1,34–2,10]). Niektóre formy krzywdzenia dzieci były istotnie związane z zaburzeniami lękowymi („jakiekolwiek krzywdzenie dziecka” [OR = 1,68, 1,33–2,4]; wykorzystywanie seksualne [OR = 1,90, 1,6–2,25]; przemoc fizyczna [OR = 1,56, 1,39–1,76] i zaniedbanie [OR = 1,34, 1,09–1,65]). Istotne statystycznie związki stwierdzono również między kilkoma formami krzywdzenia dzieci a zespołem stresu pourazowego. Wnioski: Istnieje silny związek między pięcioma formami krzywdzenia dzieci a rozwojem zaburzeń psychicznych. Badanie Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) obejmuje jedynie wykorzystywanie seksualne jako czynnik ryzyka zaburzeń depresyjnych i lękowych. Te ustalenia badawcze wspierają włączenie dodatkowych form krzywdzenia dzieci jako czynników ryzyka w GBD.
Background: Child maltreatment is a global public health issue that encompasses physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV). This systematic review and meta-analysis summarises the association between these five forms of child maltreatment and depressive and anxiety disorders. Methods: Published cohort and case-control studies were included if they reported associations between any form of child maltreatment (and/or a combination of), and depressive and anxiety disorders. A total of 604 studies were assessed for eligibility, 106 met inclusion criteria, and 96 were included in meta-analyses. The data were pooled in random effects meta-analyses, giving odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each form of child maltreatment. Results: All forms of child maltreatment were associated with depressive disorders (any child maltreatment [OR = 2.48, 2.14–2.87]; sexual abuse [OR = 2.11, 1.83– 2.44]; physical abuse [OR = 1.78, 1.57–2.01]; emotional abuse [OR = 2.35, 1.74– 3.18]; neglect [OR = 1.65, 1.35–2.02]; and exposure to IPV [OR = 1.68, 1.34–2.10]). Several forms of child maltreatment were significantly associated with anxiety disorders (‘any child maltreatment’ [OR = 1.68, 1.33–2.4]; sexual abuse [OR = 1.90, 1.6– 2.25]; physical abuse [OR = 1.56, 1.39–1.76]; and neglect [OR = 1.34, 1.09–1.65]). Significant associations were also found between several forms of child maltreatment and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Conclusions: There is a robust association between five forms of child maltreatment and the development of mental disorders. The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD)

Opis:
Genetic factors may play a role in the etiology of depressive disorder. The type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase gene (DIO2) encoding the enzyme catalyzing the conversion of T4 to T3 is suggested to play a role in the recurrent depressive disorder (rDD). The current study investigates whether a specific single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the DIO2 gene, Thr92Ala (T/C); rs 225014 or ORFa-Gly3Asp (C/T); rs 12885300, correlate with the risk for recurrent depression. Genotypes for these two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were determined in 179 patients meeting the ICD-10 criteria for rDD group and in 152 healthy individuals (control group) using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based method. The specific variant of the DIO2 gene, namely the CC genotype of the Thr92Ala polymorphism, was more frequently found in healthy subjects than in patients with depression, what suggests that it could potentially serve as a marker of a lower risk for recurrent depressive disorder. The distribution of four haplotypes was also significantly different between the two study groups with the TC (Thr-Gly) haplotype more frequently detected in patients with depression. In conclusion, data generated from this study suggest for the first time that DIO2 gene may play a role in the etiology of the disease, and thus should be further investigated.

Opis:
Multiple sclerosis is chronic and progressive disorder of central nervous system, in which different psychiatric diagnosis comorbit in 75% with neurological symptoms. The reasons of depressive disorders are still not precisely known. Psychiatric disorders are often comorbid with neurological disorders and also influence diagnosis and treatment, more often than in other somatic illnesses. It is worth to emphasize that psychic disturbances are a consequence of neurological disorders but can also be primary sign of the disease. Especially emotional disorders and cognitive impairment are characteristic to patients with multiple sclerosis. Emotional, behavioural disorders and cognition dysfunction are often a result of pharmacotherapy of neurological disorders. Psychiatric disorders are often met in patients with autoimmunological disorders, what is more corticosteroid treatment may worsen the symptoms. Depressive disorders, especially serious and moderate episodes, occur twice more frequent than in general population. Following some authors patients suffering from multiple sclerosis and psychiatric disorders present deeper cognitive function impairment, poorer life quality and motor abilities as well as have worse treatment response. Although cognitive functions’ worsening occurs in half number of multiple sclerosis patients, dementia appears in few cases. Psychiatric disorders commonly comorbit with multiple sclerosis have adverse influence on everyday functioning.
Stwardnienie rozsiane jest przewlekle postępującym schorzeniem ośrodkowego układu nerwowego, w którym dolegliwościom i objawom neurologicznym u około 75% pacjentów towarzyszą różne zaburzenia psychiczne.

Opis:
Neuroinflammation is a known factor in the pathogenesis of recurrent depressive disorders. Depression is accompanied by activated immune-inflammatory pathways including increased levels of TNFα, sTNFR1and sTNFR2.The purpose of this study was to analyse the TNF-α, TNFRSF1A and TNFRSF1B genes on both mRNA and protein levels in patients with rDD, and to investigate the relationship between TNF-α,TNFRSF1A and TNFRSF1B gene expression and cognitive performance. The study comprised 158 subjects: patients with recurrent depressive disorder (n=89) and healthy subjects (n=69). Cognitive function assessment was based on: Trail Making Test, The Stroop Test, Verbal Fluency Test and Auditory Verbal Learning Test. Both mRNA and protein expression levels of all genes were significantly higher in rDD subjects when compared to healthy controls. No statistically significant correlations were observed between the analysed variables in both the rDD group and the HS test group. The only exception was noticed in the HS test group, where increased expression of TNFRSF1A and TNFRSF1B gene negatively affected the performance of the AVLT test. However, statistically significant correlations between TNF, TNFRSF1A, TNFRSF1B mRNA gene expression levels and all the neuropsychological tests used in the survey for the entire group were observed. Conclusions: 1.The results of our study show increased expression of the TNF, TNFRSF1A and TNFRSF1B genes on both mRNA and protein levels in depression. 2. Elevated expression of TNF-α, TNFRSF1A and TNFRSF1B negatively correlates with cognitive efficiency: working memory, executive functions, attention, auditory-verbal memory, effectiveness of learning processes and verbal fluency.
