Let us assume that the expression A is a segment of the expression B. Now, let us assume that we try to transform the expression B into the expression B', removing A from B or replacing A with another expression, say A'. When shall we say that A is irremovable or occurs in B essentially? We shall do it, if we can neither remove A from B nor replace A with A', not influencing upon important properties of B. On the other hand, when shall we say that the occurrence A in B is essential? We shall do it, if we can transform B into B' changing no <> properties of B. Let us say it more precisely. Let us assume - as concerns expressions x, y, x' and y' - that: (a) x occurs in y; (b) the only structural difference between y and y' is that x does not occur in y', or x' occurs in y instead of x. Then: x occurs in y inessentially-with-respect-to-w of y, iff y' is the same as y with respect to p. Correspondingly: x occurs in y essentially-with-respect-to-w of y, iff y' is different as y with respect to p. The occurrence x in y may be essential or inessential with respect to syntactic, semantic or pragmatic properties of y. In my paper, I discuss a variety of detailed concepts of the (in)essential occurrence of expressions in another expressions with respect to semantic properties of these expressions, i.e. with respect to semantic category, logical value, denotation and connotation. I also discuss some philosophical and methodological implications of presented solutions of the problem.

In the initial part of the article Frege’s texts are analyzed in order to present his position on the question of denotation of propositions and the fragment points to the motives that made Frege recognize logical value as the denotation of proposition. In its further part the article presents the position taken in this question by commentators of Frege’s thought. In the final part of the article it is shown what shape two versions of Frege’s axiom (semantic and ontological) formulated by R. Suszko assume.

The paper is devoted to the history of considerations on the denotation of propositions, or on that which is denoted, or described by propositions. n the first part of the paper, aside to the views of ancient authors (Plato, Aristotle, Stoics) concerning this issue, the debate about the existence and nature of the denotation of propositions has been presented. It was alive especially in the later scholastic philosophy (two objectivistic standpoints – among others – Gregory of Rimini, and one subjectivistic). The second part of the paper discusses the position of modern and contemporary authors, i.e. two ways with which the question of the denotation of propositions was reconstructed in the 19th century, the so-called Brentano’s schools (Twardowski, Meinong), Frege’s thought and his followers. The texts of many authors have been analysed in order to present (and compare) all the more important views in the question of the denotation of propositions, starting from antiquity until the contemporary times.

Opis:
Izydora Dąmbska presented her views on the semiotics of proper names in her two studies: O bezimienności [On Namelessness] and Filozofia imion własnych [Philosophy of Proper Names]. The author refers mainly to the second work. I. Dąmbska begins with a syntactic definition of proper name, then she attempts to define the basic semantic function of proper name, that is, the function of naming. She emphasises the essential difference between this function of proper names and the function of denotation played by descriptive names. The difference consists in the fact that a descriptive name denotes an individual object as a representative of a respective class, whereas a proper name names an individual person without any class references. A name represents an individual by way of universaliter, i.e. in its many aspects and as one despite differences in the course of his whole life. As such, the proper name represents a conscious object of knowledge and agency. It mediates in personal relations between people and is the material of legends and history, affirms the unity of its bearer, and ensures his duration beyond death and grave. Its secondary meaning is that it plays the function of naming and representing also fictionary literary figures.

The main object of this article is to study the role of terminology within the French epistemology called Discourse Analysis. The author examines the nature of the religious discourse and focuses on its specific denotations. She studies the pope’s message (of Benedict XVI) for 2011 World Day of the Sick to show how the French theory enhances the value of the self-constituting discourse in signs interpretation. Such a vision allows to understand interdependence between discourse and its specific meanings.  Discours et terminologie. l’exemple d’un message religieuxLe but de l’article est de réfléchir sur la nature de la terminologie dans la perspective de l’épistémologie dite Analyse du Discours à la française. On s’interroge sur la nature de la langue religieuse, considérée quelquefois comme un style ou comme une langue spécialisée. Enfin on parle du genre de message religieux. Suivent ensuite quelques analyses d’un texte représentatif du genre en question : il s’agit du Message du pape Benoît XVI adressé à l’occasion de la XIXe Journée Mondiale du Malade (le 11 février 2011). Puisque tout discours crée ses propres dénotations, l’Auteur montre que, pour les comprendre, il faut se référer au discours constituant. Comme l’un des traits du message est l’explication et la didactique des sens discursifs, l’Auteur essaie de le prouver au travers des analyses effectuées.

In this article I would like to present an iconographic analysis of the Migrant Mother, a photograph by Dorothea Lange, in the context of social change in the United States of the 1930s. For this purpose I use appropriate tools and the theories of Klaus Rieser, Charles Sanders Peirce, and Roland Barthes. I also read and interpret Lange’s photograph from the feminist perspective. In this article the Migrant Mother thus constitutes a fascinating object of academic inquiry, as well as a starting point for the deliberations on the harsh words of Jean Baudrillard who said: “You assume you are photographing a given thing for your own pleasure, but in fact it wants its picture taken and you are only a figure in its staging, secretly moved by the self-advertising perversion of the surrounding world (...) All metaphysics is swept away by this reversal of situation in which the subject is no longer master of the representation, but merely a function of the world's objective irony”. I try to polemicize with the words of Baudrillard, “the high priest of postmodernism” analyzing the Migrant Mother.

The author presents part of the cross-disciplinary analysis of news media coverage on Polish politics, linked through its use of the rhetorical dispute strategy. Journalists turn to this category of dispute to describe politics and to report on it. The dispute strategy is implemented by both verbal and non-verbal communication elements (e.g. images). The author examines images and captions used to illustrate press reporting on events from the Polish political scene, published in three broadsheet newspapers: “Gazeta Wyborcza”, “Rzeczpospolita”, and “Dziennik. Polska, Europa. Świat” (from 2005–2009). The author analyses the chosen examples while referring to the theory of journalistic genres, and the semiotic and discursive perspectives.
Autorka przedstawia wycinek interdyscyplinarnej analizy tekstów dziennikarskich poświęconych polskiej polityce, które łączy dominująca w przekazie retoryczna strategia sporu. Jest ona realizowana zarówno na poziomie werbalnym (tekstów gazety), jak i niewerbalnym (m.in. doboru fotografii). Materiał badawczy stanowią zdjęcia wraz z podpisami, które zostały wykorzystane do zilustrowania relacji prasowych poświęconych wydarzeniom z polskiej sceny politycznej. Wybór został zawężony do wydań dzienników opinii, to jest do: „Dziennika. Polska–Europa–Świat”, „Rzeczpospolitej”, „Gazety Wyborczej” z lat 2005–2009. Analizując wybrane przykłady, autorka odnosi się do cech i funkcji zdjęć prasowych w świetle teorii gatunków dziennikarskich oraz w perspektywie semiotycznej i dyskursywnej.

Terminy przestrzeń i krajobraz pojawiają się w wielu znaczeniach w języku potocznym, a także w wielu innych w poszczególnych dyscyplinach nauki. Rzutuje to na niejednoznaczność relacji między tymi terminami. W geografii krajobraz można traktować materialnie i analitycznie, jako zbiór elementów wypełniających (częściowo) przestrzeń fizyczną, można też mówić o przestrzeniach między poszczególnymi jego elementami. Gdy ujmujemy go syntetycznie, ale wciąż materialnie, wycinek przestrzeni fizycznej staje się częścią składową krajobrazu. W semiotycznym nurcie badań krajobrazy kulturowe mają wiele cech wspólnych z przestrzenią społeczną i jej światem znaczeń. Można też, w badaniach analitycznych różnych nurtów, zwłaszcza dla potrzeb klasyfikacji, traktować krajobraz, jako n-wymiarowe przestrzenie matematyczne. Wszystko to zmusza, w celu uniknięcia nieporozumień, do starannego definiowania obu terminów w pracach naukowych.
Space, when conceived in a mathematical sense, may be treated as “that, in which objects are located”, and then, the materially treated landscape, as built up of objects, constitutes a category, which is subordinated to space. On the other hand, the everyday, narrow understanding of the notion of space, implying “that, which stretches between the objects”, subordinates it to the landscape. In the semiotic stream of the studies on landscape the differences between landscape and the social space become hard to grasp – landscape may be seen as a reflection (not necessarily material) of the social space. Besides, in the analytical studies, especially those aiming at classification, landscape can be treated as an n-dimensional mathematical space. The ambiguity of the terms used makes it necessary to define them very carefully in the scientific investigations.

This article presents an attempt to fund Ontology of StanisOaw Leeniewski on a simple theory with one primitive relation “being denoted by”. Developed theory shows that to the linguistic model of the Ontology can belong only such general names that in their extensions have at least two objects (references) denoted by individual names.
Artykuł jest próbą ufundowania małej, elementarnej Ontologii Stanisława Leśniewskiego na prostej teorii relacji „podpadania przedmiotu pod nazwę”. Skonstruowana teoria pokazuje, że do lingwistycznego modelu Ontologii mogą należeć tylko takie nazwy ogólne, które maja co najmniej dwa desygnaty mające swoje nazwy indywidualne.

The meaning of emotions and the meaning of words- emotions’ labels are described in studiem about emotions. Although there are some differences between these two domains, most studies about understanding emotions use lexical approach. On the other hand, the nonspecific limits inspired by language can be noticed in the area of changes in emotion meaning. Two studies were conducted and metaheuristic postulates were involved with the aim of breaking these limits. The denotation and emotional complexity were examined/analyzed in the first study. In the second study the atypical connotations taken from the psychology of creativity were used. The outcomes were discussed in relation to abstraction and metaphor as a result it is possible to go beyond literal understanding of emotions and express emotions verbally.

According to Ernst Cassirer’s views expressed in Philosophy of Symbolic Forms and Essay on Man a man is ‘a symbolic animal’, which means that: /1/ every meaning is symbolic, /2/ symbolisation creates the world but it does not reflect it, /3/ symbolisations are not individual but cultural, /4/ culture consists of ‘symbolic forms’, i.e., science, common sense, religion, magic, language and art, which create the world in different ways. Nelson Goodman in Languages of Art and Ways of Worldmaking developed Cassirer’s view towards more radical epistemological pluralism and changed his semiotic assumption. Cassirer accepted Frege’s understanding of symbolisation as a relation between three elements: a symbol, its meaning and a denoted object. For Goodman symbolisation is a two-element relation: between a symbol and an object, without the category of meaning. Symbols can denote or exemplify or refer to objects in complex and indirect ways. The paper aims to address the problem of the efficiency of that categorisation.

The article focuses on the issue of describing a work of art in an essay. The paper presents ekphrasis and underlines the efficiency of an inter-artistic analysis in studying the phenomenon of ekphrasis. An interpretation offragments of Zagajewski’s and Pollakówna’s essays starts with presenting two works of art, The Music Lesson and Girl Interrupted at Her Music by Vermeer, from the perspective of art history. It is followed by a discussion of the verbal accounts of the paintings by Zagajewski and Pollakówna. Their contents and poetics are examined with special emphasis placed on the nature of the suggested description as it may focus on either the subject or the viewer, the representation itself or its connotations. Accordingly, it is suggested that the corresponding modes of ekphrasis should be labelled ‘denotational’ and ‘connotational’. In his description, Zagajewski resorts to an example of connotational ekphrasis whereas Pollakówna’s textual relation is a fine example of mixing the denotational and connotational facets of ekphrasis. The article presents specifi realizations of ekphrasis and the characteristic modes of perceiving works of art and describing them. It also shows how the observer’s subjective perspective and idiomatic style of expression manifest themselves.

This paper is an extended Polish version of the article Emergenz, Spezifizitӓt und Entropie im Lichte der anthropozentrischen Linguistik, originally written in German and submitted for publication in the Germanica Wratislaviensia 144. First, a preliminary model of generating (specialized) knowledge will be proposed, which was built across anthropocentric linguistics, the concept of emergence and selected research in the field of neurobiology. The model is aimed at offering a possible solution to the problem of interdependence between human language skills and knowledge generating. Second, a redefinition of the terms specificity and entropy in the light of the anthropocentric theory of human languages will be outlined. It has to be highlighted that the present considerations are merely a theoretical draft which requires a more solid linguistic, philosophical and neurobiological foundation.

Artykuł analizuje problem nieujednoliconej i nieusystematyzowanej terminologii prawosławnej w języku polskim, w której zauważalna jest nie tylko obecność nieuporządkowanych i nieopracowanych konotacji wielu terminów, lecz także zauważalny brak jednoznacznie zamkniętych denotacji wielu terminów. Artykuł skupia się na przykładach związanych z określeniem drugiego stopnia kapłaństwa, obecnych w źródłach pisanych i mowie potocznej. Na ich podstawie możemy zaobserwować różne próby rozwiązania problemu braku wiodącej denotacji. Chociaż niektóre z postulatów zostały przedstawione w latach 60. XX wieku, to do chwili obecnej, nie znalazły one spójnej i powszechnej akceptacji i upowszechnienia.
The article analyzes the problem of non-standardized and unstructured Orthodox terminology in Polish, in which not only the presence of unordered and untreated connotations of many terms is noticeable, but also a noticeable lack of clearly closed denotations of many terms. The article focuses on examples related to the definition of the second degree of priesthood, present in written sources and colloquial speech. On their basis, we can observe various attempts to solve the problem of the lack of leading denotation. Although some of the postulates were presented in the 1960s, to date, they have not found consistent and widespread acceptance and dissemination.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present the vocabulary describing migrants over the history of the Polish language. The author conducts quantitative analysis and describes chosen expressions. The research material consists of 73 lexemes collected from 12 dictionaries of the Polish language. It should be emphasized that the dictionaries mentioned contain both Old Polish and modern lexemes. The emphasis here was placed on the examples found in three dictionaries: „Słownik języka polskiego” edited by Zdanowicz et al. (19th century), „Słownik języka polskiego” by Jan Karłowicz, Adam Kryński and Władysław Niedźwiedzki (20th century) and „Słownik języka polskiego” edited by Witold Doroszewski (20th century). The dictionaries mentioned above contain the largest number of names referring to migrants. The considerations presented in this paper not only refer to the lexical level, but also to historical and societal motivations that have contributed to the emergence of new terms of this kind.
