Opis:
The article discusses the relationship between effective labor supply-determined by factors that are linked either directly or indirectly with human capital-and sustained economic growth per capita. On the basis of an expanded Mincer wage equation, the author estimates effective labor supply, taking into account effects linked with human capital, and conducts an econometric analysis of changes in the average working time in Poland in 1970-2005. The author zeroes in on long-term relationships and checks the results of his analysis against a body of statistical data. The diagnostic tools used by the author include the Gauss-Markov theorem, a method for evaluating statistical errors developed by mathematicians Carl Friedrich Gauss and Andrey Markov. According to Florczak, standard labor supply analyses are often inaccurate because they overlook factors linked with working time, the quality of labor, and the overall social and demographic conditions. In an era of globalization, the author says, if it wants to maintain its international economic competitiveness, Poland should increase the role of “extensive” factors of production by boosting the economic activity of the population.

Opis:
Europa od kilkudziesięciu lat ulega demograficznemu starzeniu. W perspektywie ten proces nasili się, co doprowadzi do zasadniczej zmiany proporcji między ludźmi młodymi i starymi. Liczba młodych, mających zastąpić osoby w wieku reprodukcyjnym (i zdolności do pracy) będzie maleć, natomiast liczba starych, wymagających wsparcia i opieki będzie rosnąć.
For several decades now Europe has undergone population ageing. Within the coming half a century or so that process will be intensifi ed, which will result in a fundamental shift in the relationship between the youth and the elderly. Numbers of young people which are supposed to replace persons in reproductive (and working) age will be declining whereas numbers of old people, those who require support and care will be growing. In other words, an increasing demand related to those needs that will result from the ageing of population will be met by decreasing demographic resources, which – by present standards – serve the satisfaction of such demand. Poland belongs to countries where that change will be particularly drastic. By the year 2060 from one of the youngest populations in the European Union it will become the oldest one. I argue that this process – which I consider the principal demographic challenge Europe is facing – is unavoidable, and it will become irreversible within several decades. Despite illusions, a response to ensuing social and economic challenges cannot be found in the demographic change itself, especially the one to be accomplished by means of population policies (including migration policy). The effective solutions are to be sought in other spheres than the demographic one.

Opis:
The modern dynamics of the urban population of Belarus differs from the total population dynamics trend. The total population size of Belarus decreased from 10.1 to 9.5 million or 6%, in the period from 1989 to 2009 years. The urban population increased from 6.2 to 6.7 million, or 8.2% in the same space of time. Groups of towns by population size differ in the character of population dynamics. Population growth is typical for small towns, because of administrative reforms – some urban-type settlements get status of town. The population of small towns has increased by 17.5% during the period of 1989-2009 years, large and medium cities – by 7% an average. Natural movement indicators of the urban population of Belar us have significant differentiation between classes of towns by population size. During the period of 1989-2009 years the highest birth and mortality rates were established in the small towns. The highest birth and the lowest mortality rates are typical for large cities. Higher values of fertility rates in large cities determines by higher level of socio-economic development and the continued migration to cities the XXI century. The higher fertility rates in small towns are due to two factors: the state-support of small business in this group of settlements and attracting young professionals to new enterprises in small towns. Natural increase of population is manifested in all classes of towns in Belarus during the period 1989-2010 years. The highest rates of natural increase are typical for large cities with population size over 100 thousand people. In general, the demographic revitalization is obtained in 46% of towns in Belarus. This process is based on the factors of natural and migratory population movement. Population is growing due to natural increase and migration inflow with an absolute predominance in the structure of migratory factor in every fifth town (21%). In 17 towns (15%) population is increasing due to the predominance of one positive factor with negative value of the second (Natural increase > Migratory outflow, Natural decrease < Migratory inflow). Population decline with the dominant role of migratory losses is typical for 64% of towns in Belarus (mainly small and medium).

The aging of the population both in the global and regional aspect causes a number of negative effects. The most important are: aging of the workforce as well as its loss, which sharpens the basic economic problem associated with limitation of resources. Particularly important is to initiate actions to activate senior people by increasing the age of ability to work as well as by introducing solutions which will increase absorption of these people's work to the labor market. The current situation of senior people on the labor market indicates that there are many barriers which prevent them from entering the labor market. The complexity of the problem requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach.

The problem of low economic activity in Poland, in particular among the young and the elderly is associated with a number of factors including the situation on the labour market and the construction of social security system. Additionally, unfavorable economic trends related to lower fertility and population ageing make the issue of stimulating economic activity in Poland of high priority. Therefore, the aim of this article is the analysis of the most important factors determining the activity of Poles with a special reference to demographic factors. The main emphasis was put on the analysis of labour force participation of people who are informal carers and on the needs and possibilities of long-term care for the elderly.

Conducted by demographers research and analysis indicate that lasted for several years, a decline in fertility has not stopped and it applies increasingly to another youth. Among the reasons for this phenomenon are mentioned: increased interest in acquiring education, difficulties in the labor market, reducing social benefits for the family, lack of social policy philosophy of family strengthening, and the difficult socio-economic, etc. factors. Therefore, because of the importance of the scale of the problem which is the fertility rate in the study attempts to predict fertility rate based on the authors' model based on the properties of wavelet analysis taking into account the effect on fertility of such factors as the number of marriages, number of divorces, the average monthly gross wages and emigration. It should be noted that the declining fertility and increasing life expectancy cause aging and steadily reducing the number of young people aged 16-24 years. The aim of the imaging problem in the article quoted some statistics related to study the problem from previous years.

A number of previously used logistic, n-power and other models describing the dynamics of the human population were analyzed. The proposed methods of mathematical modeling allowed to describe demographic transition dynamics of the human population in terms of its size from 0.3 to 7 billion, and determine the initial numbers of humanity and the phase portrait of that process.

The progressive ageing process concerns both Poland and other Member States of the European Union. In recent years, the share of workers of non-mobile and post-productive age in the total population has been rising, and according to forecasts, in 2035 people aged 45 years and over will represent two-thirds of our society. Since the year 2012, announced the Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations by the European Commission, more and more attention has been paid in the Polish public space to the issues of an ageing society, including its impact on the health of the economy. The article notes that the ageing process does not occur uniformly across all Polish regions, i.e. at the same pace and with the same intensity. The results of studies indicating the regions being most vulnerable to the ageing of the regional community and the negative consequences of this process in the next two decades are presented.

The process of demographic aging means that human resource managers will have to learn how to use the potential of workers of a mature age in order to maintain or improve the current market position of the company. In the near future, they will stand before the challenge associated with the provision of opportunities to work in safe conditions for the 50+ workers. The characteristics of the employment of elderly people makes it necessary to introduce ergonomic principles, particularly concerning the formation of working conditions for the elderly and to facilitate a creation of appropriate human resource management. In the paper shown is the role of ergonomics, treated as one of the basic elements of age management in the enterprise. The implemented solutions will increase the activity of people of the 50+ generation in the labor market. The application of comprehensive age management strategy requires the co-operation of all employees, including employers, workers belonging to different age groups, ergonomists, trade unions and occupational physicians.

The article presents the methods of computing the size of urban population in the Kingdom of Poland in the second half of the 16th century. As there are no sources such as censuses the assessments of the population have had to be carried out on the basis of indirect sources, which cannot be precise. The most popular method of computing the size of urban population consists in counting the buildings situated in the town in question, which had been registered in inventory or tax sources. The authors analysing the date of the whole early modern period, especially the 18th-century Austrian registers have come to the conclusion that the value of the conversion factor should be related to the type of buildings. In the case of most Polish towns dominated by wooden buildings the conversion factor should be six people per one house. If we have the information on the number of houses, the calculations of the size of population should be carried out on the basis of the data contained in the land tax collection registers, which register the number of urban mansi and the heads of households of the population composed of craftsmen, tradesmen and landless tenants.

The article presents methods of computing the size of the population in the rural areas of the Kingdom of Poland in the second half of the 16th century. As there are no sources such as censuses the assessments of the population have been carried out on the basis of indirect sources, which cannot be precise, such as registers of land taxes of the years 1578–1581; they give information on the number of mansi (a mansus, laneus, a field measurement equal to 16.8 hectares) in a village that belonged or were used by peasants, village headmen, impoverished gentry, innkeepers or were just empty mansi. In addition to that, the tax was supposed to be paid by landless lodgers (with and without cattle), craftsmen, millers, ore miners and representatives of other proto industrial professions. According to a suggestion made by Irena Gieysztorowa the authors compare the data of the tax collection of 1552 (from peasant’s households) with the chronologically closest ones of the 1560s (the land taxes), which allows to regionally differentiate the conversion factor of the number of peasant households in relation to the taxed mansi, representative also of the turn of the 1570s and the 1580s. Moreover, the authors have used the findings of historical demography of the last decades, among other things the conversion factors of the size of households of several groups of rural population. On the basis of the research on the 16th century economy the authors have established the conversion factors of how big was the demand of the farms for permanent hired workforce.

The article presents the demographic conversion factors that have been used for a hundred years in the research on Poland’s population of the second half of the 16th century. The forerunner of research in that sphere and the editor of basic sources was Adolf Pawiński; his proposal for the conversion factors was criticised by many researchers, among others Włodzimierz Czerkawski, Witold Kula, Irena Gieysztorowa. After a hundred-year discussion it may be said that «Źródła Dziejowe» and the method of computing urban populations used by Pawiński are not the recommended tools; similarly, demographic conversion factors for rural populations should be modified or specified.

Opis:
The article summarises the state of research on Poland’s population in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the Early Modern Times; at the same time it indicates the necessity and possibility of correction of the present assessments. So far historical demographers have been concentrating on counting the country’s population at two temporal points: 1340 and 1580. In the first case they concentrated on the registers of Saint Peter’s pence, and in the other – on the tax registers. The two sources do not inform directly on the size of the population, but rather on the amount of paid taxes: per head, per household, the size of acreage or the value of property. For almost a hundred years a special methodology has been created to use those sources for the needs of demography, and in the literature there have appeared several conversion factors to assess the size of the population. In spite of all that and because of the imperfection of the source basis, a defective edition and different conversion factors applied by various researchers, the assessments of the size and structure of the population of the Kingdom of Poland in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the Early Modern Times that have been made so far, are not entirely satisfactory.
