Opis:
The Fe-based alloy with manganese led to the appearance of new austenitic alloys, with the antiferromagnetic property pursued, resulting in compatibility with the magnetic field as that of magnetic resonance imaging. The corrosion resistance behavior of the biodegradable Fe-Mn-Si alloy was analyzed in a thermostatic chamber at 37±1°C for 24, 48 and 72 hours by immersing in Ringer solution. Also, the cast and laminated samples were subjected to electro-corrosion tests using a potentiostat equipment. Linear and cyclic potentiometry is presented for characterize the corrosion behavior of the experimental samples in electrolyte. Due to the interaction between the alloy and the liquid medium a change in the solution pH was observed. Structure analysis and chemical composition details of the surfaces were obtained using electron scanning microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

Over 350 million tons of conventional plastics are currently produced from petroleum per year and this amount is expected to rise exponentially in the near future. Proper disposal of these products has caused a great problem for the waste management industry and as a result, there is a significant negative impact on the environment. As a matter of fact, in order to reduce the environmental impact of plastics, some products obtained from agriculture (like starch) are used as polymer blend with synthetic plastics. This study shows that Manihot esculenta can be blended with polyethylene to form a partially degradable polymer. The processing conditions and sample formulations are shown to significantly affect the structure of the polymer which has a concomitant effect upon the degradation ratio as well as the degradation rate. Six samples were produced by varying composition of the blend between Low-density Polyethylene and Manihot esculenta using glycerol and water as plasticiser. These samples were buried in soil and the degradation ratios and rates were studied within a period of 28 days. The results showed that these produced biopolymers are environmentally compatible and bio-degradable. The rate of biodegradation in soil of these biopolymer samples varied largely. The polymer blend with 80% LDPE (20 CaS) by weight had the most regular weight loss over the period of the study. Under the conditions the study was carried out, polymer blend 20 CaS also had the steadiest rate of degradation. Hence, 80% LDPE (wt.%) blended with Manihot esculenta starch is the optimal ratio with regard to the degradability of biopolymer in sandy-loam soil.

Opis:
The stochastic modelling of degradation processes requires different characteristics to be considered, such that it is possible to capture all the possible information about a phenomenon under study. An important characteristic is what is known as the drift in some stochastic processes; specifically, the drift allows to obtain information about the growth degradation rate of the characteristic of interest. In some phenomenon’s the growth rate cannot be considered as a constant parameter, which means that the rate may vary from trajectory to trajectory. Given this, it is important to study alternative strategies that allow to model this variation in the drift. In this paper, several hazard rate functions are integrated in the inverse Gaussian process to describe its drift in the aims of individually characterize degradation trajectories. The proposed modelling scheme is illustrated in two case studies, from which the best fitting model is selected via information criteria, a discussion of the flexibility of the proposed models is provided according to the obtained results.

Opis:
In this paper, a system reliability model subject to Dependent Competing Failure Processes (DCFP) with phase-type (PH) distribution considering changing degradation rate is proposed. When the sum of continuous degradation and sudden degradation exceeds the soft failure threshold, soft failure occurs. The interarrival time between two successive shocks and total number of shocks before hard failure occurring follow the continuous PH distribution and discrete PH distribution, respectively. The hard failure reliability is calculated using the PH distribution survival function. Due to the shock on soft failure process, the degradation rate of soft failure will increase. When the number of shocks reaches a specific value, degradation rate changes. The hard failure is calculated by the extreme shock model, cumulative shock model, and run shock model, respectively. The closed-form reliability function is derived combining with the hard and soft failure reliability model. Finally, a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to establish a new reliability model of the system subject to multiple dependent competing risks. For a system subject to multiple dependent competing risks, the total degradation consists of natural degradation amount and sudden degradation increments (SDIs) caused by random shocks arriving at the system. Most researchers on this topic only focus on the SDIs. However, the impact of random shocks on degradation rate is ignored. In this paper, a novel reliability model considering degradation rate acceleration (DRA) caused by random shocks is proposed, in which the degradation model is based on the degradation path. The dependence relationship between multiple degradation processes is dealt with by copula method, and the arrival time of shocks is assumed to follow a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed reliability model is demonstrated by an example of a series system. Moreover, the effect of model parameters is evaluated through sensitivity analysis.

Opis:
Acid leaching of Egyptian zinc ore from the Um Gheig area was carried out with sulfuric acid. This study determines the optimum conditions for dissolution of non-sulfide zinc ore. The optimum conditions are 25% -74m particle size, 45 °C temperature, 2 h leaching time, 1.1 stoichiometric molar ratio of H2SO4 to Zn, 1:3 solid/liquid ratio. The maximum filtration rate is 1.6 Mg Zn•m-2•day-1at pressure difference of 0.80 bar. The zinc recovery is about 90%. As the zinc ore contains zinc silicate, some additives were tested to enhance filtration and prevent formation of silica gel. To increase the added value of the product, zinc oxide was precipitated by a co-precipitation method in a nanosize powder with average particle size ~ 20 nm. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye under UV light using ZnO nanopowders produced at different conditions was investigated. Photocatalytic efficiency with methylene blue (MB) concentration was reduced as much as 85% in 240 min with the produced nanoparticles.

Gloves afford hand protection by minimizing skin contact. The effectiveness of medical gloves to protect against permeation of the monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and 1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate (1,4-BDMA), was assessed focusing on permeation rates and degradation of glove materials caused by monomer contact. Fifteen different brands of gloves were tested using a European Standard procedure. Surface images of glove materials before and after exposure to the monomer mixture were obtained using a scanning electron microscope. The standard is not applicable as the only method for estimating the safety of gloves, but it is useful as guideline together with the cumulative permeation of acrylic monomers. Monomer contact on the outside resulted in substantial swelling of most glove materials, and structure changes of the inside surface.

Opis:
Decomposition kinetics of natural organic substances during the photocatalytic process with a semi-conductor TiO2 has been investigated. In the study, a laboratory reactor Heraeus and in a photocatalytic membrane reactor were used. Simulated solutions of deionized water, surface water and fulvic acids, differing in composition, were tested in the experiment. In order to determine reaction rate constants, the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model based on the first order reaction was applied. It was found that photocatalytic process enabled effective degradation of natural organic substances although its run was affected by inorganic ions, mainly those producing water hardness, present in water.
