Opis:
The authors of the aesthetics in the Victorines’ school are its most famous members: Hugh and his disciple Richard. Hugh was the first one who devoted a substantial part of his work to theory of aesthetics, which he included in the seventh book of the encyclopaedic work Didascalion de studio legendi. He refers there to the Neoplatonic theory of aesthetics following the Dionysian-Eriugenian theory of symbolism. In the first two parts he develops ontological foundations of aesthetics and its psychological determinants. In the ontological aspect Hugh is an objectivist and treats beauty as a constitutive property of beings. In the part concerning psychological foundations of aesthetics he introduces a specific power which combines two aspects of aesthetic experiences — spiritual and sensual. It is the so called affectio imaginaria, incorporated into the theory of psychophysical unity of human being. The issues related to the role of beauty in human life and aesthetic experience as a path leading to mystical life Hugh supplements with ethical considerations. He devotes a large part of his work to discussion of the definition of beauty. The most original part of Hugh’s aesthetics is the one in which he distinguishes formal categories of beauty: placement (situs), motion (motus), quality grasped by sight (species) and qualities experienced by other senses (qualitas). The theory of mystical contemplation of beauty understood as a process of the soul’s climbing to God analogous to Plotinian conception of ‘epistrophe’ can be considered a peculiar crowning of Hugh’s aesthetics.

Dans les études sur la définition, si souvent abordée dans différentes disciplines de recherche, la problématique des prédicats définitionnels (verbaux) présents dans les énoncés définitoires est rarement mise à l’examen, quoiqu’ils soient importants pour bien comprendre le definiendum. Les linguistes, principalement francophones, entreprennent ces études pour le repérage automatique des structures linguistiques de ces énoncés en corpus des textes. Les juristes, bien que l’activité définitoire soit l’une des principales activités dans la rédaction des textes de loi, ne se posent pas des questions sur les prédicats définitoires. Le présent article se veut être une approche pluridisciplinaire de cette problématique pour en signaler l’utilité. La première partie contient le rappel des informations essentielles sur le signe linguistique et le sens, des typologies des définitions lexicographiques basées sur les recherches philosophiques, des énoncés et des prédicats définitoires dans l’approche onomasiologique et sémasiologique. Dans la deuxième partie est abordée la terminologie des unités de langue dans les textes de loi et la spécificité des définitions légales, et ensuite les prédicats français et polonais qui sont des marqueurs des énoncés définitoires légaux extraits manuellement des versions bilingues du code de droit canonique. La mise en parallèle des constructions de ces prédicats fait voir d’une part les constructions syntaxiques caractéristiques pour chaque langue, d’autre part la spécificité de ces prédicats dans la langue du droit par rapport aux prédicats définitoires de la langue générale. L’analyse des exemples apporte des indications utiles pour la traduction en polonais des prédicats définitoires dans les définitions légales françaises.
W badaniach definicji, tak często spotykanej w wielu dyscyplinach, rzadko podejmuje się problematykę predykatowych (czasownikowych) łączników definicyjnych w wypowiedzeniach definicyjnych, mimo iż są one istotne dla dobrego zrozumienia definiendum. Językoznawcy, głównie w środowiskach francuskojęzycznych, podejmują analizę tych łączników w perspektywie zastosowania ich do automatycznej ekscerpcji definicji w tekstach. Prawnicy, choć definiowanie jest jedną z głównych aktywności w redakcji tekstów prawa, nie zadają sobie pytania o te czasowniki. Niniejszy artykuł wychodzi naprzeciw potrzebie ujęcia interdyscyplinarnego tego zagadnienia. W pierwszej części przypomniane są najważniejsze informacje dotyczące znaku językowego i znaczenia, typologii definicji leksykalnych wywodzących się z filozofii, wypowiedzeń i predykatów definicyjnych w ujęciu onomazjologicznym i semazjologicznym. W drugiej części omówione są terminy jednostek językowych w tekstach prawa i specyfika definicji legalnych, a następnie predykaty francuskie i polskie będące łącznikami definicyjnymi w wypowiedzeniach definicji legalnych wyekscerpowanych ręcznie z francuskiej i polskiej wersji kodeksu prawa kanonicznego. Zestawienie ekwiwalentnych konstrukcji tych predykatów ukazuje z jednej strony charakterystyczne dla każdego języka konstrukcje składniowe, z drugiej strony odrębność tych predykatów w języku prawa w odniesieniu do predykatów definicyjnych w języku ogólnym. Analiza tych przykładów daje konkretne wskazówki do tłumaczenia na język polski predykatów definicyjnych we francuskich definicjach legalnych.
In studies of definitions, so often addressed in different research disciplines, the problem of defining (verbal) predicates present in defining statements is rarely examined, although they are important for a proper understanding of the definiendum. Linguists, mainly French-speaking, generally undertake these studies for the automatic identification of the linguistic structures of these statements in text corpora. Although the defining activity is one of the main activities in the drafting of legal texts, lawyers do not ask themselves questions about the defining predicates. This article aims to be a multidisciplinary approach to this problem in order to point out its usefulness. The first part contains a reminder of the essential information concerning the linguistic sign and meaning, typologies of lexicographic definitions based on philosophical research, definitional statements and predicates in both the onomasiological and semasiological approach. In the second part, the terminology of language units in legal texts and the specificity of legal definitions are discussed, followed by the French and Polish predicates which are markers of the legal defining statements and which have been manually extracted from the bilingual versions of the code of canon law. The comparison of the constructions of these predicates shows, on the one hand, the characteristic syntactical constructions for each language, and on the other hand the specificity of these predicates in the language of law compared to the defining predicates of the general language. The analysis of the examples provides useful indications for the translation into Polish of the defining predicates in the French legal definitions.

This work deals with the flow of the electromagnetic energy through an idealized single-phase transformer supplied with nonsinusoidal voltage and supplying a nonlinear load. The electromagnetic flux components of the energy that flows from primary to secondary as well as the flux of energy stored in and ejected from the dielectric space surrounding the windings are identified and quantified. The electromagnetic flux components are correlated to well known instantaneous powers. These powers are not clever mathematic expedients but correct expressions that mirror the actual physical phenomena and lead to a more realistic interpretation of apparent power and its resolution.

Background. In the face of unrelenting civilization threats and social challenges, the dynamic development of wellness & spa centers is observed. The aim of this work is an analysis to determine whether the 100 best Polish spa hotels satisfy the requirements of this type of company in light of terminology put forward by the International Spa Association (ISPA) and the European Spas Association (ESPA). Material and methods. Definitions put forward by ISPA and ESPA form the basis of assessment in this study. A method of diagnostic survey was applied. Results. According to the ESPA, only 41% of spas can actually be classified as such, compared to 61% according to ISPA. As many as 22% of the hotels surveyed do not meet the requirements of such enterprises for either ESPA or ISPA. Inconsistent definitions of ESPA and ISPA lead to chaos in the wellness & spa market. Conclusions. It is necessary to develop a Polish definition which clearly defines the criteria for the classification of spa facilities and the possibility of their verification from the point of view of quality and compliance with planned standards.
Wprowadzenie. W obliczu niesłabnących zagrożeń cywilizacyjnych i wyzwań społecznych obserwuje się dynamiczny rozwój ośrodków wellness & spa. Celem pracy jest analiza, czy w świetle terminologii International Spa Association (ISPA) i The European Spas Association (ESPA), 100 najlepszych polskich hoteli spa rzeczywiście spełnia wymogi tego typu przedsiębiorstwa. Materiał i metody. Podstawą oceny są przyjęte przez ISPA i ESPA definicje spa. Zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego. Wyniki. Według kryteriów ESPA tylko 41% hoteli może być określonych mianem spa, według ISPA − tylko 61%. Aż 22% ze wszystkich badanych hoteli nie spełnia kryteriów ESPA i ISPA. Niespójne definicje ESPA i ISPA prowadzą do chaosu na rynku wellness & spa. Wnioski. Konieczne jest opracowanie ustawowej polskiej definicji, która określi normy/kryteria klasyfikacji obiektów spa i umożliwi ich weryfikację pod względem jakości i zgodności z wyznaczonymi standardami.

Background. Backpacking is a relatively new type of travelling (its existence dates back to the 90s of the 20th century). According to the indications of foreign researchers of the issue, it has evolved from drifting, and according to Polish theorists – from tramping. From the very beginning, backpacking has been identified with a generation of young people, mostly students, who have temporary resources or employment status and are not conditioned with family responsibilities. The definition of this alternative mode of travelling was established on the basis of research and analysis of canon characteristics of backpackers. Material and methods. Some essential features relevant only to backpacking are classified in the paper. However, backpacking is changing together with the changing generations. Therefore, the research presents reflections on backpacking definitions formulated by two generations of tourists (backpackers youth: aged 18–25 years, and seniors: aged 60–75 years). The study should be treated as a survey, supporting the diagnosis of the problem and preparing the ground for research on a wider scale. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 100 people aged between the so-called young backpackers (50 respondents) and senior backpackers (50 respondents). The technique of a diagnostic questionnaire was used. Conclusion. The results obtained allowed to establish backpacker definitional characteristics, as perceived in the context of the travelling experience of two generations of travellers.

In creative design practice, when we want to exert influence over reality, we operate using our architectural language, enriched with various forms of notation. Irrespective of whether this influence is to lead to exploring material reality or to transform it, our language is a type of barrier that limits our understanding and comprehension, thus being a certain type of bind that constrains new efforts. Aware of language limitations, the author places notions that appear in the article under closer scrutiny, with the key one being the notion of the diagram and diagrammatic representation. There are many terms used here, some of them having closely related meanings. It is therefore important to define them. In some cases, the author discusses various ways in which certain terms are understood or controversies associated with specific interpretations.
W praktyce twórczych działań projektowych, chcąc działać na rzeczywistość operujemy naszym językiem architektów, wzbogaconym różnymi formami zapisu. Niezależnie od tego, czy to oddziaływanie ma prowadzić do poznania rzeczywistości materialnej, czy też do jej przekształcania, język nasz jest rodzajem bariery, wpływającej na ograniczenie naszego rozumienia i pojmowania, a więc jest pewnego rodzaju więzią krępującą nowe działania. Zdając sobie sprawę z ograniczeń językowych autor poddaje bliższej analizie terminy, które pojawiają się w artykule, przy czym kluczowym jest określenie diagramu i reprezentacji diagramowej. Terminów tu używanych jest dużo, część z nich jest przy tym bliskoznaczna. Stąd ważne jest określenie ich znaczenia. W niektórych przypadkach autor rozważa różne możliwości rozumienia pewnych terminów, czy kontrowersje związane z konkretnymi interpretacjami.

The term ‘beneficiary’ used for the purposes of spending the EU aid funds was introduced into the Polish legal system before Poland became member of the European Union. Initially, the national legislator used this term only in the domestic regulations on the basis of which public funds were transferred. Over time, the legislator also introduced the definition of the beneficiary to national regulations adapted to the needs of the cohesion policy. It can be observed that the legislator, while initially providing own definitions of the beneficiary, recently has only referred to particular provisions of the directly applicable EU regulations. Obviously, national authorities must operate in an integrated legal system, in which there are many sources of binding law that define ‘beneficiaries of funds allocated to the implementation of the cohesion policy’. In this context, one can speak of the Europeanisation of national law with regard to the implemented policy.

Artykuł omawia wybrane problemy związane z wprowadzaniem do miejscowych planów zagospodarowania przestrzennego ustaleń dotyczących cmentarzy, w szczególności postuluje aby: 1) w sposób precyzyjny określić, co należy rozumieć pod pojęciem przeznaczenie terenu; 2) zlikwidować obowiązek ustalania intensywności zabudowy; 3) wprowadzić zasadę, że określanie wysokości zabudowy i linii zabudowy ma charakter fakulta- tywny. Na przykładzie cmentarza, artykuł wskazuje na niedostatek precyzji przepisów dotyczących planowania i gospodarowania przestrzenią, wynikający m.in. z braku definicji szeregu określeń oraz różnego definiowania tych samych pojęć w poszczególnych aktach prawa. Omawia sposoby postępowania w sytuacji, kiedy ustawa o planowaniu i zagospodarowaniu przestrzennym nakazuje wprowadzenie do miejscowego planu zagospodarowania przestrzennego ustaleń dotyczących danego zagadnienia, ale nie definiuje pojęć niezbędnych do dokonania ww. ustaleń. Ostrzega, że powyższe sposoby postępowania nie zawsze są respektowane przez organy nadzoru, co prowadzi do stwierdzania nieważności planów miejscowych. Na podstawie przykładowych dokumentów pokazuje, jak do ww. zagadnień odnoszą się osoby mające wpływ na tworzenie prawa. Sumując, artykuł: 1) uzasadnia potrzebę opracowaniem słownika pojęć stosowanych w planowaniu przestrzennym, budownictwie, geodezji, gospodarce nieruchomościami, ochronie środowiska i zabytków, księ- gach wieczystych oraz systemie podatkowym, a następnie, na podstawie takiego słownika, doko- nywanie zmian poszczególnych aktów prawa; 2) postuluje, aby organy nadzoru szanowały władztwo planistyczne gmin.
The article discusses selected issues related to the introduction of cemeteries into local spatial development plans. In particular, it recommends the following: 1) precisely defining the term ‚,land use”; 2) eliminating the obligation to determine the density of housing development; 3) introducing the regulation that determining the height and building alignment is optional. By using a cemetery as an example, the article indicates the lack of precision in provisions regarding planning and space management. This is due to a lack of crucial definitions and a different understanding of the same concepts within particular acts of law. The article describes procedures used for implementing certain arrangements as required by the Spatial Planning and Management Act. It does not define the concepts obligatory for implementation of the above-mentioned arrangements, though. The paper stresses that the procedures outlined above are not always respected by the regulatory authorities. This may result in a cancellation of local spatial development plans. Based on surveyed records, the paper demonstrates how the aforementioned issues are addressed by lawmakers. To sum up, the paper: 1) justifies the need for the development of a coherent glossary of terms used in spatial planning, construction, geodesy, real estate management, environmental and monument protection, land and mortgage registers and the tax system. Such a glossary could then be used to amend particular legal acts; 2) demands that the regulatory authorities respect the ,,municipalities” planning jurisdiction.

This publication is addressed to students of security studies who attempt to define crime and describe criminogenic phenomena when working on their undergraduate or graduate theses. It is intended to help students decide which specific categories of crime to study and later describe. The main focus of the study is on specific categories of crime, including common crime, organized crime, drug-related crime, and juvenile crime. Students are presented with proposed definitions within selected criminological categories of crime as well as with suggestions on how to describe these phenomena in statistical terms. The hypothesis is that common crime remains the largest category in overall crime statistics, but it does not clearly prevail in terms of actual crime. The contents of this article are the product of the authors’ considerations, supported by many years of police experience, with reference to selected items of literature.
Niniejsza publikacja skierowana jest do studentów kierunków bezpieczeństwa, podejmujących w swoich pracach licencjackich czy magisterskich próby zdefiniowania przestępczości i opisu zjawisk kryminogennych. Ma ona ułatwić studentom podjęcie decyzji o wybraniu określonych kategorii przestępczości, które podlegać będą badaniom i późniejszemu opisowi. Głównym przedmiotem badań są określone kategorie przestępczości, między innymi kryminalna przestępczość pospolita, zorganizowana, przestępczość narkotykowa czy przestępczość nieletnich. Studentom przedstawiono propozycje definicji odnoszących się do wybranych kategorii kryminologicznych przestępczości, jak i sugestie odnoszące się do opisu zjawisk w ujęciu statystycznym. Hipoteza zakłada, że: kryminalna przestępczość pospolita jest wciąż najliczniejszą kategorią w odniesieniu do statystyk przestępczości w ogóle, jednak jej udział w przestępczości rzeczywistej nie ma już charakteru wyraźnej dominacji. Tekst publikacji przedstawia zapis rozważań własnych autorów, popartych wieloletnim doświadczeniem służby w Policji, w odniesieniu do wybranych pozycji literatury fachowej.

Opis:
The paper summarizes the present state of discussions on power phenomena, power definitions and compensation in single-phase linear circuits. The main concepts developed over several decades on how various non-active powers in circuits with nonsinusoidal voltages and currents should be defined and compensated are presented along with a detailed discussion of these concepts. The paper presents also the concept of the single-phase load current decomposition into Currents' Physical Components (CPC) and its application for power definitions and compensation in such circuits. The paper is not addressed to scientists and experts on powers, but rather to common electrical engineers that sometimes face power related problems in nonsinusoidal systems.

Mimo iż biologia jest nauką zajmującą się żywymi organizmami, to nie istnieje jedna, akceptowana przez wszystkich, definicja życia. Wszystkie zaproponowane dotychczas definicje życia proponują kryteria, które nie są spełniane przez niektóre formy istnienia, co do których nie mamy wątpliwości, że powinny być zaliczone do organizmów żywych. Jak zatem można odpo- wiedzieć na pytanie – kiedy potencjalną, nieznaną nam wcześniej, spotkaną w kosmosie formę istnienia nazwiemy organizmem żywym, a kiedy nie? Te dylematy są dyskutowane w tym artykule, a rozważania te doprowadziły do wniosku, że zaklasyfikowanie danej formy istnienia do organizmów żywych nie ma większego znaczenia, jeśli tylko poznamy i zrozumiemy jej budowę i mechanizmy funkcjonowania.
Despite biology is a scientific discipline focused on living organisms, there is no single, accepted by all biologists, definition of live. All such definitions proposed to date suggest criteria which are not fulfilled by some creatures which undoubtedly should be classified as living organisms. Therefore, how to answer the question: when a potential, previously unknown, form of existence met in the space should be called living organism, and when not? These dilemmas as discussed in this article, and my disputes led to the conclusion that classification of a given form of existence to living organisms is not essential if we recognize and understand its structure and mechanisms of functioning.

This article deals with the contribution of formal definition of concepts to the definition of terms in natural language in the context of the ontological turn of terminology. Ontology in the sense of knowledge engineering constitutes one of the most promising perspectives for conceptual terminology, for which a term is a verbal designation of a concept, and a concept a unit of knowledge. The contribution of ontology is not limited to the operationalization of terminology for IT applications. By making concepts explicit, i.e., by defining them in a formal language, ontology strongly impacts terminology, both in its principles and methods. Specifying concepts in a formal language allows guaranteeing “good” properties, such as the objectivity of definitions whose interpretation is governed by theory alone. The definition of terms in a natural language can then be considered as a translation of the formal definition of a concept. How these two types of definition are linked to each other remains to be clarified, and in particular whether it is possible to generate patterns of term definition based on formal concept definition. This will depend on the formal language which will be used, and on the underlying concept theory.

Opis:
Real versus nominal definitions in the language of 19th century German legal dissertations Definition is included in the basic (scientific) activities (methods). The results of the definition are communicated in the language. In my paper I take up the topic of functions performed by definitions in the development of knowledge about law. The basis for my deliberations are selected fragments of German scientific treatises from the 19th century. I am particularly interested in the above topic in the context of the principle of dividing definitions into real and nominal definitions adopted since the times of Aristotle. In my paper I try to establish the status of definitions used in the texts I analyse. The fundamental research problem is whether the definitions formulated by the 19th century German law theorists are certificated, real, classical essential definitions – established in the final analysis (this would be consistent with the expectations of some researchers of the language of law related to its character, i.e. its accuracy, accuracy), or whether these definitions are understood in a fallible way, subject to revision and change, which are the results of the field of law.
