Opis:
The article attempts to describe homoerotic and non-heteronormative motifs mainly in Witkacy’s novels and, in a limited way, also in his plays (The Beelzebub Sonata and Maciej Korbowa and Bellatrix). The author refers to categories of bi-curiousness, semi-vir, abjection and phantasmal scenario, tracking the relation between decadence as ideology and decadence as homosexuality, and stating a thesis that Witkacy was a queer writer. The homoerotic scenes analyzed by the author, bearing similarities in structure and language, are described as representing two separate “phantasmal scenarios” in Witkacy’s literary imagination.

Opis:
The article outlines the cultural context of Russian women who contributed to the development of decadent poetry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most now forgotten or “occulted” (eclipsed, crowded out). Given the importance of gender theories and “feminine” discursive space in the Silver Age, this phenomenon must be examined; it is not just a typical example of women written out of literary history. The article suggests reasons why decadence may have appealed to women as well as why Russian women who adopted a specifically decadent position might not have been taken seriously. It ends by suggesting why more famous Russian poets (especially Axmatova and Cvetaeva, whose reputations have lasted and grown) achieved more lasting influence thanks to their occulted female predecessors.

Opis:
Proper names should be recognized as a significant factor of a literary character and in broader perspective of bringing closer the novel problems. The main novel character, Leon Płoszowski, percepts and sense the world through the self-analysis and analysis of the reality surrounding him. Proper names above all emphasize two features: erudition and cosmopolitism of the novel character. His formation and contact through the years with high culture do not help him to put the world – both: one inside and one outside him – in order, but all of this remains a stigma in a form of association everything with art, literature, philosophy etc. It is confirmed in the novel by numerous proper names. The fact that proper names in basic for Leon Płoszowski characteristics places in the novel apply mostly to the past, causes that they form sort of „onomastic museum”.

Opis:
The literary history of the question: “Art for art’s sake” in Europe and, more specifically, in Spain, is the subject of the book by Roberto Mansberger Amorós entitled La Joven Europa y España: la cuestión de «el arte por el arte» (Young Europe and Spain: the question of «art for art’s sake», written in Spanish). The book is composed of six chapters, along with the introduction, conclusion, extensive bibliography and index of names. The chapters focused on the general history of the idea alternate with those dedicated to the particular writers and thinkers. Chapter 1 presents the theory of “art for art’s sake,” its origin and progress. Chapter 2 introduces the subject of Young Europe, with the focus on Young Poland and Young Spain. Chapter 3 is an extensive digression about the subject of morals in Spanish 19th century literature, aesthetics, ethics and critics. Chapter 4 studies the individual stances of Valera and Campoamor, whereas chapter 5 undertakes the issue of the Decadent movement and the Restoration. The sixth and final chapter describes the poetry and the poets related to the concept “art for art’s sake.” The uniqueness of the book rests on the combination of the balanced analyses of literary sources and original period documents and archival material of Real Academia Española concerning the issues of art and morals, along with a reflection about the historical, philosophical and ideological context of the matter. Since this kind of profound knowledge united with the ability to write both persuasively and interestingly is rare, the book by Mansberger Amorós is an enlightening reading experience not only for specialists on the topic, but also for all those interested in the history of Spanish literature and ideas.

Opis:
The article examines the most significant semantic changes and transpositions that can be found in Zenon Przesmycki’s translation of the seminal sonnet Langueur written by Paul Verlaine in the second half of the nineteenth century. It closely analyzes the way in which the translation was used by Polish scholars of literary history. Having influenced the vision of culture nurtured by the so-called Decadent Movement in fin-de-siècle Europe, Verlaine’s poem was then employed in numerous academic studies as an illustration of the philosophy and the attitude towards society that were dominant in the period under discussion. In Poland, Przesmycki’s translation played an important role in defining the very term “decadent,” as several influential researchers used it in their analyses in order to provide their readers with Polish equivalents of the original French terms. As a result, Przesmycki’s version of Verlaine’s sonnet, although intended just as a poetic translation, served a different purpose from the ones that its translator could have ever imagined. It helped define and describe the culture of “decadent” Europe as a whole. The terminology Przesmycki used to translate the French words, such as langueur and decadence (“niemoc” and “wielkie konanie” respectively), was thus introduced into the Polish scholarly debate on European modernism. Premised upon the idea of cultural transfer (transfert culturel), the analysis presented in the article helps determine the extent to which Przesmycki’s translation shaped the Polish perception of fin-de-siècle Europe.
