Books by Bernd Heinrich became very popular literature describing basic rules of functioning of ecosystems. Heinrich describes also working routine of scientists who try to discover those rules. In Heinrich’s writings, I note however a very visible link – which can be defined as covering animals’ death. In my text I try to unmask this fact. I also debate why this method of hiding animals’ death by using euphemisms and understatements is performed.

The article is an attempt to show the evolution of the medical explanation of the phenomenon of death. Characteristic features of this evolution are the following:1. In the history of medicine there are two main ideas that explain the phenomenon of death: the idea of qualitative transformations, which means the stopping of metabolism, and the idea of quantitative transformations, which means the loss of the “essence of life”. It may be the loss of consciousness (irreversible dysfunction of the higher brain) or the loss of an important factor that sustains life (irreversible dysfunction of the brain stem).2. From a biological point of view, death is a process, but for practical purposes, medicine also tried to express it in the form of moment.3. Medical progress leads to the formulating of new definitions of death, but that does not mean that medicine is able to decide which one to choose. Rather, it needs philosophy for this.

This paper presents theoretical assumptions and psychometric properties of the Death Education at School Questionnaire (DESQ): a brief instrument that allows to measure attitudes toward human-centered death education as an element of school education. The participants were 375 university students – education and teaching majors. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed a two-factor structure of the DESQ, with two sub-scales: (1) Openness toward the presence of death education in a school and (2) Humanistic Basis of Death Education. Reliability of both sub-scales was acceptable and they significantly correlated with measures of attitudes towards death and human-centered school education. We posit that the DESQ can be used to measure adult education participants’ beliefs in death education and its place in school education on primary and secondary school levels.

Previous research examining the relationship between religion and attitudes about death have yielded mixed results due to over-simplified conceptualizations of constructs, lack of theory, and an over-reliance on Western samples. To overcome these issues, the present study examined the relationship between three types of religious orientation and two types of death attitudes among a sample of 532 college students in Poland. The results demonstrated unique relations between religion and death attitudes, as well emphasized the importance of considering religious engagement as a moderating variable. Although the results were generally consistent with Terror Management Theory, other theoretical perspectives were considered as well.

In dem Ausatz geht es um die biologischen Todesbegrife, die der Rafael Ferber in dem Buch: Philosophische Grundbegrife, Band 2, Kapitel V: Tod, München 2003, 197-227, behandelt. Die biologische Definition des Todes, die von August Weismann stammt. bildet einen Ausgangspunkt zu weiteren Űberlegungen dieses Problems. Es wurde fest betont der Unterschied zwischen einer Todesdefinition und den Todeskriterien, die in der Medizin, als einer praktischen Disziplin, wichtige Rolle spielen. Man hat herasgehebt folgende Todeskriterien: 1. Herztod, 2. Hirntod, 2.1. Ganzhirntod, 2.2. Teilhirntod und 3. Testverfahren – ob die Kriterien erfüllt sind. Die Todeskrieterien kann man auch in einer formaler Gestalt, als eine Operationsdefinition darstellen. Entscheidend ist an den Bestimmungen des Todeskriteriums, daβ das Eintreten des menschlichen Todes heute auf einer Festsetzung beruht. Deshalb ist in der Gegenwart das Eintreten des Todes häufig keine natürliche oder reale Tatsache mehr, sondern eine institutionelle Tatsache, die durch semantischen Regeln konstituiert wurde. Die biologische Todesdefinition ist keine Menschentodesdefinition.

The objective of this article is to present the theoretical assumptions and psychometric properties of the Model of Inversed Death Questionnaire. The existential and educational consequences of the new cultural model of death which spreads in modern western civilization justify the need to create the tool to measure the extent to which the model of inversed death is present. Based on studies, involving 341 students from universities in Warsaw, reliability, construct and criterial validity of the tool were tested. It has been shown, that this tool has the correct psychometric properties and can be used in subsequent studies. The multidimensional internal structure of the Model of Inversed Death Questionnaire corresponds to the theoretical model of the studies whereby there is four typical phenomena of the model of inversed death: demetaphysication of death, trivialization of death, taboo of death, separation of death experiences.

Death is a constant element of human life. The awareness of mortality constitutes an essential factor in understanding life. Since time immemorial it is a vital reference point for philosophical systems that attempt to answer the question: How should one live? And they do so from the perspective of human mortality. In Western culture the thanatological subject matter is rarely represented, death does not match the modern lifestyle. Thus, at school, in the family, in the media discussions of death and passing away are either not entered into or the issue is distorted by ignorance, vulgarization or demonization. However, daily life confronts the human being with the death of others and also provokes reflection on one’s own mortality. The need to honestly confront the issue of death requires taking appropriate action in the area of bringing up children, education, popularization and, if need be, also therapy, which will help people to cope with the awareness of the death of others and prepare them for their own death.

Man is the only earthly creature who is aware of himself and of the inevitability of his death. Death, as a mystery and inescapable reality, has always been the subject of reflection and research. Popes have also discussed this issue in their teaching.The aim of the article is to present human attitudes toward death in Gregory the Great’s homilies from the fifth and sixth centuries. A textual analysis of these homilies reveals that man should prepare himself for death in such a way that death arouses not fear, but rather joyful entrustment to God. Gregory’s homilies also convey that the decisions that a person makes throughout his lifetime have a powerful impact on the moment of his death. Pope Gregory demonstrates the interdependence of the free decision that man makes at the moment of death and the gift of eternal life with God. The pope proclaims that if someone lives a sinful life, then evil spirits will fight for his soul at the moment of his death. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to put one’s life in order before death and to be safeguarded by the prayer of the community of the Church at the moment of death.

For centuries, the death penalty has been a subject of interest not only to lawyers, political scientists, philosophers or psychologists, but also to representatives of various types of organizations, including non-governmental organizations and politicians. The death penalty is the merciless murder of a human being, committed premeditatedly by the state in the name of justice. It is a violation of the right to life guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is the most cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. A mistake cannot be eliminated, which is all the more dangerous because the death penalty is an irreversible punishment. The death penalty was and still is sometimes treated as a political tool, used to eliminate inconvenient opponents. In Poland, the last execution was carried out in 1988, followed by a moratorium on the adjudication and execution of the death penalty, and finally amended legislation. Today Poland is a member of the Council of Europe and the European Union, which strictly oppose the death penalty. However, there is no shortage of voices, both among politicians and the public, to reinstate the death penalty for the most serious crimes. This article presents the history of the death penalty in Poland and selected contemporary views, on the possibility of reinstating the death penalty in Polish criminal law.
