Opis:
The research covered 46 areas (each 400 sq.m) located in nine regions of the Kampinos National Park. This research is the result of field work carried out three times in years: 2007, 2012 and 2018. Dead wood measurements are one of the elements of testing on solid surfaces, which also includes vegetation, soil and stand. The average dead wood content in the Kampinos National Park over the past 11 years on long-term surfaces increased by 53% (from averages 35.59 m3/ha in 2007 to 54.37 m3/ha in 2018). Areas located in strictly protected zones showed greater abundance of dead wood in relation to the surface in active protection, and this difference is significant. On the surfaces covered by both forms of protection, during 11 years of research an increase in dead wood resources was noted, but only in areas covered by active protection it was statistically significant. In terms of the type of stand, oak stands with the average thickness of standing and lying wood in 2018 amounting to 110.70 m3/ha are the richest in dead wood, and the poorest pine stands with an average of 20.07 m3/ha. The results obtained on solid surfaces indicate a much greater richness of dead wood in the forests of the Kampinos National Park compared to the lowland state forests. However, due to the relatively small number of areas covered by the study, this work contributes to the knowledge of dead wood resources in this area and does not exhaust the need for a complete inventory.

Opis:
Aim: The aim of this paper is to reveal evaluation findings in respect of forest fire risk at Białowieża Primeval Forest, in the context of spruce trees degradation caused by a bark beetle invasion. The article is based on the report “Level of forest fire risk and threat to humans in relation to the volume of dead wood in Białowieża Forest” [1], which was commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. Introduction: Białowieża Primeval Forest is of particular importance in relation to environmental values. However, in recent years, spruce tree stock has been exposed to progressive degradation across an area exceeding thousands of hectares, caused by an unusually large infestation of bark beetle (Ips typographus L.). Such developments, accompanied by symptoms associated with natural disasters, have increased the presence of combustible materials creating a potential fire hazard. Current debate and controversy amongst diverse interest groups revolves around the question of whether active human intervention should constrain the degree of degradation in the precious environment or avoid interference and allow nature to pursue its own course. One essential element of proactive defence at Białowieża Forest is an endeavour to protect it from the risk of fire. For this reason the article contains an evaluation of existing fire hazards, an analysis of current protection systems in place and proposals for the improvement of such systems. Methodology: An evaluation of fire risk in Białowieża Primeval Forest was made by reference to the following: Forest fire risk categorization for Białowieża forest area management plan and conservation plan of Białowieża National Park; frequency of forest fires during the years 2000-2015; current forest fire protection system in force and evaluation of the system in context of current legal requirements, taking account of influences on the risk of fire caused by a volumetric increase and type of biomass generated through degradation. Conclusions: The risk associated with Forest fires has increased as a result of spruce trees degradation in Białowieża Primeval Forest. In addition to this increase of combustible material other factors, which contribute, include the emergence of grass overlays across dead wood areas. Such grass, when dry, leads to outbreaks and propagation of fires in forest areas. Abandonment of prevention activities and departure from forest management principles compel the adaptation and adjustment of existing fire protection systems in accordance with emerging threats.

Opis:
Dead wood plays an important role for the biodiversity of forest ecosystems and influences their proper development. This study assessed the amount of coarse woody debris in municipal forests in Warsaw (central Poland). Based on the forest site type, dominant tree species and age class, we stratified all complexes of the Warsaw urban forests in order to allocate 55 sample plots. For these plots, we determined the volume of dead wood including standing dead trees, coarse woody debris and broken branches as well as uprooted trees. We calculated the amount of dead wood in the distinguished site-species-age layers and for individual complexes. The volume of dead matter in municipal forests in Warsaw amounted to 38 761 m3, i.e. 13.7 m3/ha. The obtained results correspond to the current regulations concerning the amount of dead organic matter to be left in forests. Only in the Las Bielański complex (northern Warsaw) volume of dead wood is comparable to the level observed in Polish national parks or nature reserves, which is still far lower than the values found for natural forests. In general, municipal forests in Warsaw stand out positively in terms of dead wood quantity and a high degree of variation in the forms and dimensions of dead wood.

Opis:
Białowieża Forest, due to its unique character, requires a specific approach to the management of this area, including fire risk assessment. This is particularly important with regard to the recent bark beetle (Ips typographus) outbreak, which has contributed to the local dieback of Norway spruce stands on a total area of approx. 11.5 thousand hectares during the 2012-2022 period. The article presents the most important results of the implemented projects related to the fire protection of the Białowieża Forest. The analysis of potential fire hazard should take into account both dead wood and the impact of tree stand dieback, which resulted in the emergence of grasses as the dominant plant cover that poses a high risk not only for the possibility of fire, but also for its rapid spread. During 2012-2022 fuelload of the studied areas increased almost sevenfold compared to 2011 (15.8 t/ha), reaching an average maximum value of 108.9 t/ha in 2017. However, the progressive decomposition of dead wood and the decreasing amount of fine combustible material (fire-active biomass) caused that the fire risk in turn gradually decreased. After a period of about 10 years after the stand dieback, the fire risk caused by the dead wood left behind has reached a minimum level and the possibility of initiating the burning of such material was significantly reduced. Despite the decreasing fire hazard from dead wood, the fire risk will remain high for many years due to the presence of grass cover, especially during periods when it dries out. The analysis of the fire risk in the Białowieża Forest caused by the spruce bark beetle outbreak formed the basis for the development of the "Fire Protection and Forest Fire Fighting Plan for the Polish Part of the Białowieża Forest Transboundary World Heritage Site", which includes: fire risk assessment, fire detection, communication and alarm system, fire roads, water stores, equipment for fire fighting and rules for conducting rescue and fire-fighting operations.

Faunistic and ecological studies on saproxylic Collembola species were carried out in the Wigry National Park (NE Poland). Nine sites representing Tilio-Carpinetum, Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum habitats each including three different levels of disturbance were visited twice in 2015. Samples from fallen logs in different stages of decay, neighboring litter and soil as well as arboreal epiphytes were taken on each visit. The Collembola specimens were then extracted using Tullgren funnels resulting in a total of 73 838 specimens from 270 samples. Specimen identification revealed the occurrence of 63 species, including 5 saproxylobiontic, 7 saproxylophilous, 4 xerophilous species living in epiphytic mosses and lichens as well as 47 hemiedaphic or euedaphic species. This composition of saproxylic fauna seems to be typical for the region with the most diverse assemblages being found in Tilio-Carpinetum habitats, while Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum are clearly less diverse. Additionally, a slight decrease in the number of Collembola species with increasing forest disturbance was observed. Furthermore, an increase in the number of Collembola species with the degree of dead wood decomposition was also found. This indicates that saproxylic springtail assemblages are sensitive to anthropogenic changes.

Opis:
Coarse woody debris constitutes an important and often indispensable habitat component for a huge number of vertebrates dwelling in temperate forests. The paper collates the results of research on the impact of coarse woody debris on the functioning of the Rodentia and Soricomorpha populations. In reference to this groups of vertebrates, the subject has been well−documented in the North America. Nevertheless, with regard to small European mammals the issue has not yet been fully recognized. The paper constitutes a review of the available literature on the matter. The cited research revealed that coarse woody debris, in its different decomposition stages, increases the heterogeneity of a habitat. Creating unique micro−habitats for small mammals of high environmental demands, it offers refuge, reproduction site and rich source of nourishment. The abundance of coarse woody debris may have an indirect impact on a population quantity, density and functioning, including area exploitation. The authors stress the fact that in the case of small mammals, associations between coarse woody debris and population features are not universal for all species, since they tend to differ in ecological characteristics. An analysis of the available literature on the matter reveals that the current knowledge of the associations between small mammals and coarse woody debris needs to be broadened and improved. It concerns, in particular, the areas where this type of research has not yet been conducted, including European and Polish forests.

Opis:
The study deals with long-term dynamics of snags and fallen dead wood from 1970 to 2010 in an unmanaged forest ecosystem dominated by European beech in the Bažinky area, Krkonoše National Park (Czech Republic). The volume of dead wood was estimated from 1970 separately for fallen dead wood (logs) and standing dead wood (snags and stumps). Total dead wood volume on permanent research plot (PRP) 6 increased from 41.9 to 241.6 m3 ha–1 and on PRP 7 from 27.7 to 170.0 m3 ha–1. During 40 year case study the mean total volume of fallen dead wood was 193.3 m3 ha–1 (± 29.8 S.E.) and 96.2 m3 ha–1 (± 19.4 S.E.) and the mean total volume of standing dead wood was 17.4 m3 ha–1 (± 3.4 S.E.) and 12.6 m3 ha–1(± 1.4 S.E.) on PRP 6 and PRP 7, respectively. Comparing tree species, the mean volume of fallen dead wood was significantly higher for Norway spruce than for beech in the decomposition class 1 (F(1, 14) = 5.7, P = 0.03) and significantly higher for beech in the decomposition classes 4 (F(1, 14) = 20.4, P < 0.001) and 5 (F(1, 14) = 25.5, P < 0.001). Dead wood was distributed from randomly to aggregated spatial pattern. Despite the rapid decay of beech wood, the amounts of deadwood are likely to increase further during the next decades with continuing disintegration of the forest stand.

Opis:
Black cherry is an important invasive species in forest ecosystems in Poland. It developed mainly in Scots pine stands. The aim of the study was to identify microscopic fungi colonies inhabiting black cherry stumps. In the spring of 2017, wood samples were collected from stumps created after cutting in each subsequent month of 2016 in the Podanin Forest District (19°28'00'E, 52°04'00'N). Stumps up to 5 cm and more than 5 cm in diameter were selected for the study. In total, 72 discs from the first stage of the decomposition of wood were collected. The discs were drilled to obtain fine sawdust for further analysis. The trials were divided into four periods. DNA isolation was performed using the Plant Genomic DNA purification kit (ThermoScientific). The ITS1/2 rDNA region was used for species identification. The analysis was carried out using specific primers. The obtained product was purified and sequenced using the Illumina SBS technology. The resulting sequence was compared using the BLAST algorithm with reference sequences from the NCBI database. The communities of fungi inhabiting the black cherry stumps differed from each other. The highest number of taxa was identified in samples from stumps over 5 cm sheared in autumn and winter, while the lowest in stumps up to 5 cm sheared in spring and winter. Fungi belonging to the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Glomeromycota, Zygomycota and non−cultivable fungi and organisms belonging to other kingdoms were identified. Saprophytes from Menispora sp. dominated on the analysed stumps. The collection of fungi of larger stumps was more diverse and more numerous than on stumps with a smaller diameter. A greater diversity of taxa was distinguished by the stumps of tree fallen in the growing season. The majority of the analyzed samples were dominated by Ascomycota. Basidiomycota clusters dominated in the winter. The predominant share of saprotrophs shows the distribution of stumps. The most desirable effect of the research would be the indication of naturally occurring saprotroph, whose operation would reduce the black cherry’s yield strength. The applied method of sequencing based on the Illumina System was effective to determine the composition of the fungal population.

The aim of this research was to determine the composition of microscopic fungi colonizing Norway spruce dead wood depending on the degree of decomposition of wood and the location in the Tatra National Park (TPN; southern Poland). The work included lying and standing dead wood of Norway spruce as well as tree stumps. The sampling plots were located in the Białka Valley (eastern part of the TPN) where the forests are unmanaged and area is mostly under strict pro− tection, and in the western part of the Park, in the Chochołowska Valley, where the majority of forests is privately owned and managed (landscape protection). Samples were collected three times in the growing season, in spring, summer and autumn 2016. The sampling plots were located in the forests covered by different forms of protection: strict, active and landscape. The dominant microscopic fungi inhabiting analysed Norway spruce dead wood in selected regions of the Tatras are fungi belonging to Trichoderma genus: T. harzianum: T. polysporum, and T. hamatum. A much greater diversity of fungi species isolated from the dead wood was found for the Białka Valley, subjected to strict and active protection, than Chochołowska Valley, where forests are subject of the economic utilisation. More species and colonies were obtained from lying and older dead wood than from the stumps in the higher classes of distribution.
