Opis:
In this paper, we present basic ideas and perspectives related to the use of fuzzy logic for the derivation of linguistic summaries of data (databases). We concentrate on the issue of how to measure the goodness of a linguistic summary, and on how to embed data summarization within the fuzzy querying environment, for an effective and efficient implementation. In particular, we propose how to efficiently implement Kacprzyk and Yager's (2000) new quality indicators of linguistic summaries to derive summaries via Kacprzyk and Zadrozny's (1994; 1995a; 1995b; 1996) fuzzy querying add-on. Finally, we present an implementation for deriving linguistic summaries of a sales database at a computer retailer, and show how the linguistic summaries obtained can be useful for supporting decisions of the business owner.

Opis:
Contrary to the common opinion, neural networks may be used for knowledge extraction. Recently, a new methodology of logical rule extraction, optimization and application of rule-based systems has been described. C-MLP2LN algorithm, based on constrained multilayer perceptron network, is described here in details and the dynamics of a transition from neural to logical system illustrated. The algorithm handles real-valued features, determining appropriate linguistic variables or membership functions as a part of the rule extraction process. Initial rules are optimized by exploring the accuracy/simplicity tradeoff at the rule extraction stage and the one between reliability of rules and rejection rate at the optimization stage. Gaussian uncertainties of measurements are assumed during application of crisp logical rules, leading to "soft trapezoidal" membership functions and allowing to optimize the linguistic variables using gradient procedures. Comments are made on application of neural networks to knowledge discovery in the benchmark and real life problems.

Firstly the idea of objective psychological tests and their characteristics related to various features of human psychophysiology are introduced. Examples of objective tests are given. Next application of data mining algorithms to analyse data obtained from different tests are outlined. The general concept of a computer system for objective psychological studies of psychomotoric processes in humans is then described. Finally the possibility of implementation of the system in medical and psychoacoustical studies is pointed out.

Opis:
From the past centuries until the seventies, underground coal mining activities have played an important role in the suburban development of western European coal basins. After closure of collieries, the impact of this activity on a fast growing urban environment is still obvious and cannot be underestimated. Changes in hydrological regime, water and soil pollution, sudden collapse or ground instability are risk factors not to be minimized. Old mining and related industrial sites have now to be revalidated and underground infrastructures and city planners and local authorities cannot ignore mineshafts. This is only possible if the huge amount of available mining data is preserved and their information computerized. These mining data represent an essential component of urban geology that must be integrated in an easy access geographic information system. The old coal districts in southern Belgium serves as a case study for developing an appropriate methodology.

The analysis of traffic safety data archives has improved markedly with the development of procedures that are heavily dependent upon computers. Three such procedures are described here. The first procedure involves using computers to assist in the identification and correction of invalid data. The second procedure makes greater computational demands, and involves using computerized algorithms to fill in the ‘‘gaps’’ that typically occur in archival data when information regarding key variables is not available. The third and most computer-intensive procedure involves using data mining techniques to search archives for interesting and important relationships between variables. These procedures are illustrated using examples from data archives that describe the characteristics of traffic accidents in the USA and Australia.

The general problem of computer-based clinical decision support systems is considered. A class of rules in medical databases characteristic for therapeutic decisions has been distinguished. The necessity of application of a complete set of data for learning computerised systems of decision support has been pointed out. Rough set approach is applied to the analysis of the problem. An illustrative example of application of the presented results in the treatment of endometrial and breast cancer is given.

One of the main issues of operators today is to be able not only to store and manage the huge amount of data generated by the applications and customer contact points, but also to give value to these data. But this implies using tools for storing the data, to manage it, look at it, understand it, exploit it, generate actions such as marketing campaigns. It is therefore obvious that using one tool for each of these functions will discuss here the technical issues involved and show how we turned them into an easy-to-use solution for business users.

In this paper we present a new probability function G that generalizes the classical probability function. A mass function is an assignment of basic probability to some context (events, propositions). It represents the strength of support for some contexts in a domain. A context is a subset of the basic elements of interest in a domain - the frame of discernment. It is a medium to carry the "probabilistic" knowledge about a domain. The G function is defined in terms of a mass function under various contexts. G is shown to be a probability function satisfying the axioms of probability. Therefore G has all the properties attributed to a probability function. If the mass function is obtained from probability function by normalization, then G is shown to be a linear function of probability distribution and a linear function of probability. With this relationship we can estimate probability distribution from probabilistic knowledge carried in some contexts without any model assumption.

The telecommunications operators have to manage one of the most complex systems developed by human beings. Moreover, the new technological developments, the convergence of voice and data networks and the broad range of services still increase this complexity. Such complex object as telecommunication network requires advanced software tools for their planning and management. Telecommunications operators collect large volumes of the data in various databases. They realize that the knowledge in these huge databases might significantly improve various organizational strategic and operational decisions. However, this knowledge is not given explicitly, it is hidden in data. Advanced methods and algorithms are being developed for knowledge extracting. In this paper we will focus on using data mining for solving selected problems in telecommunication industry. We will provide a systematic overview of various telecommunications applications.

This paper concerns some relationship between Bayes' theorem and rough sets. It is revealed that any decision algorithm satisfies Bayes' theorem, without referring to either prior or posterior probabilities inherently associated with classical Bayesian methodology. This leads to a new simple form of this theorem, which results in new algorithms and applications. Besides, it is shown that with every decision algorithm a flow graph can be associated. Bayes' theorem can be viewed as a flow conservation rule of information flow in the graph. Moreover, to every flow graph the Euclidean space can be assigned. Points of the space represent decisions specified by the decision algorithm, and distance between points depicts distance between decisions in the decision algorithm.

This paper describes the problem of planning cellular network base stations with optimization to traffic requirements. This research problem was a main incentive to add some development to the theory of association rules. The new form of quantitative and multi-dimensional association rules, unlike other approaches, does not require the discretization of real value attributes as a preprocessing step. They are discovered with data driven algorithm that gives precise and complete results and has polynomial complexity for a given dimensionality.

Opis:
Most of the earlier work on clustering has mainly been focused on numerical data whose inherent geometric properties can be exploited to naturally define distance functions between data points. Recently, the problem of clustering categorical data has started drawing interest. However, the computational cost makes most of the previous algorithms unacceptable for clustering very large databases. The k-means algorithm is well known for its efficiency in this respect. At the same time, working only on numerical data prohibits them from being used for clustering categorical data. The main contribution of this paper is to show how to apply the notion of "cluster centers'' on a dataset of categorical objects and how to use this notion for formulating the clustering problem of categorical objects as a partitioning problem. Finally, a k-means-like algorithm for clustering categorical data is introduced. The clustering performance of the algorithm is demonstrated with two well-known data sets, namely, soybean disease and nursery databases.

The article discusses the main problems connected to the specificity of medical aspects, especially as concerns the quality and means of selection of data and tools used for constructing classification systems. Special attention is devoted to the risks inherent in direct application of classical knowledge extraction algorithms (such as the algorithms for constructing decision trees) to medical data. The article describes some attempts at solving emerging problems and points to the need for analysis of classifiers with regard to more than just their potential redundancy and mutual exclusion. The article also proposes two functions, useful for analysing rule sets with focus on data semantics.
