Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of parenteral and oral supplementation of Selenium (Se) and vitamin E (VTE) on selected antioxidant parameters in blood and colostrum as well as their effect on the incidence of mastitis in dairy cows during the final phase of gravidity (6 weeks) and first two weeks after calving. For the practical part of the study 36 dairy cows of Slovak pied breed in the second to fourth lactation-gestation cycle were selected. The animals weredivided into three groups: the control (C) and two experimental groups (D1 and D2). The selected groups were treated as follows: in group D1 products containing Se (Selevit inj.) and vitamin E (Erevit sol. inj.) were administered intramuscularly twice, six and three weeks prior to parturition; in group D2 a vitamin-minerals supplement in the form of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and dl-α-tocopherol acetate were supplemented orally for six weeks calving. The blood samples were collected from the vena jugularis in dairy cows approximately 42 days before calving (control sampling), on parturition day, and the 14th day after calving. Higher concentrations of Se and VTE were found in the blood plasma samples of both experimental groups collected on the day of parturition. In addition, the orally supplemented group (D2) showed higher Se and α-tocopherol concentrations in blood plasma on the14th day after calving as well a reduction of occurrence of mastitis by about 25 % compared to the control group. The relationship between inflammatory response and oxidative stress was also confirmed. The concentrations of milk malondialdehyde indicating lipid peroxidation during mastitis were significantly higher in milk samples from infected cows than in milk samples from healthy animals in each monitored group. In order to prevent oxidative stress and moderate inflammatory response in dairy cows it is very important to optimally balance their nutritive needs with an appropriate ratio of Se and VTE supplements. Therefore we still recommend supplementation of the cows’ postpartum dietwith 0.5 mg of Se/kg dry matter (DM) and 102 mg of dl-α-tocopherol acetate/kg DM to stabilize their optimal blood levels, stimulate the activity of glutathione peroxidase and reduce the incidence of mastitis.

This study aimed to identify bacterial pathogens in milk samples from dairy cows with subclinical and clinical mastitis as well as to assess the concentrations of oxidant-antioxidant parameters [malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and total GSH levels] in both blood and milk samples. From a total of 200 dairy cows in 8 farms, 800 quarter milk samples obtained from each udder were tested in the laboratory for the presence of udder pathogens. Cultivated bacteria causing intramammary infection from milk samples were identified by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF). In addition, from tested animals 60 cows were selected includıng 20 healthy cows that were CMT negative, 20 cows with subclinical mastitis (SM), and 20 cows with clinical mastitis (CM) for detection of MDA, GSH, and total GSH levels in blood and milk samples. Three hundred and eighty (47.5%; 380/800), 300 (37.5%; 300/800), and 120 (15%; 120/800) of milk samples, respectively were CMT positive or SM and CM, and those positives were cows from different farms. We observed that 87.4% (332/380), 25.3% (76/300), and 34.2% (41/120) of cows with CMT positive, CMT negative, and CM had bacterial growth. The most predominantly identified bacteria were Staphylococcus chromogenes (18.7%) obtained mainly from SM and Staphylococcus aureus (16.7%) as the most frequent cause of CM. According to our results, dairy cows with CM had the highest MDA levels, the lowest GSH, and total GSH levels in both blood and milk samples however, high MDA levels and low GSH levels in milk samples with SM were observed. Based on our results, lipid oxidant MDA and antioxidant GSH could be excellent biomarkers of cow’s milk for developing inflammation of the mammary gland. In addition, there was no link between nutrition and MDA and GSH levels.

Opis:
Copper deficiency is a common homeostatic disorder in dairy cattle farms in Poland. A simultaneous decrease in blood copper and iron concentrations is very rarely diagnosed and described in dairy cows. Copper is necessary for the mobilization of iron from the liver and its transport to bone marrow, where it is used for erythropoiesis. The aim of the study was to observe changes in haematological parameters in cows, resulting from copper deficiency or simultaneous deficiency of copper and iron, in comparison with animals from the same herds in which no deficiencies of these micronutrients were found. The study was conducted on 56 cows of the HF breed, aged from 3 to 6 years, from 3 dairy farms. The animals selected for the study were divided into three groups, two deficiency groups and one control group – without deficiency. Group I comprised animals with reduced concentration of copper in the serum, while group II comprised animals with low copper and iron concentrations. Group III comprised healthy cows without clinical symptoms and mineral deficiency. In both deficiency groups, the one characterized by a low concentration of copper, as well as the one with low concentrations of copper and iron, a reduction in red blood cell parameters, which was statistically significant versus the control group, was observed. In the examined animals, normocytic normochromic anaemia was found in group I, while normocytic hypochromic anaemia was diagnosed in group II. Cows with simultaneous Cu and Fe deficiency have worse milk yield results and they are more often culled from the herd. It is not clear why only some animals in a herd develop simultaneous deficiency of these micronutrients.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental housing conditions on the milk yield of dairy cows. Measurements were taken in the summer period from June to September, 2020 and in the winter period during January, 2021 on a large-capacity farm of Holstein Friesian cattle. Cows were housed in free stall barn with the lying boxes and selected during the second or third lactations, in the summer period from the 51st day to the 135th day and in the winter period from the 64th day to the 120th day of lactation. The average temperature in the housing was 23°C in summer, and 7.05°C in winter. The average THI (thermal humidity index) value in summer was 70.43, but during the day the THI values sometimes reached 75. The dairy cows were therefore exposed to heat stress during summer. Increasing THI and temperature values negatively affected the milk yield, as there was a negative correlation between both THI and milk yield (r = −0.641; p < 0.01) and temperature and milk yield (r = −0.637; p < 0.01). Milk production in winter was at 58.77 kg per day and in summer at 49.55 kg per day. In the summer, the milk had a significantly lower content of fat (p < 0.05), proteins (p < 0.001), lactose (p < 0.001), minerals (p < 0.001) and conversely, a higher number of somatic cells (p < 0.01). These results show that worse environmental conditions during the summer negatively affected the level of milk yield and the composition of the cows’ milk.

Response to the superovulatory hormone treatments varied for the type of breed and doses of superovulatory hormone used. Ovarian response of 42 crossbred HF (50%, 75%) and pure dairy cows were evaluated based on ultrasonographic count of CL and embryo recovery for quality assessment. Ovarian response rate was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the crossbreds than in the pure bred cows. The maximum response achieved (CL count, mean ± SE) was 14.6±1.1 and the least with 11.2±1.1, 75% HF at 650IU and pure HF at 800IU, respectively. Significantly higher (p<0.05) number of UFO were collected at a dose of 500 IU while transferable embryos were higher at 650IU in both the 50% HF and 75% HF cows. Pure bred cows responded fairly with more CL and produced higher number of transferable embryos at a dose of 800 IU FSH. In conclusion, the optimal dose for maximum response (CL count) exhibited in cross breed HF cows is 650 IU.

The aim of the study was to use evolutionary operations (EVOP) to evaluate changes in the behaviour of dairy cows depending on the strategy according to which they were grouped after calving. The experiment was carried out on a Danish farm keeping about 200 Holstein cows. The farm had two separate areas for lactating cows: a small area with 54 waterbeds and a larger area with 133 beds with mattresses. During the experiment both areas were filled with cows. Cows after calving were introduced to either the small area (group) or the large area (group). After 14 days, the cows from the small group were transferred to the large group. The impact of different cow grouping strategies on their lying time, considered a welfare indicator, was examined. During the 210-day experiment, 195,703 observations were collected. The behavioural data were analysed using a linear mixed-effect regression model fitted by the maximum likelihood method. Days in milk, parity number, and lying time of herd mates were found to significantly affect the lying time of individual cows, while the strategy of cow grouping after calving had no effect on lying time.

Opis:
Nutrition is one of the most important factors influencing animal health status, welfare and productivity. High-yielding dairy cows exhibit negative energy balance during early lactation, because amount of energy secreted in milk exceeds the energy content of ingested feed. Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), inhibit fatty acid synthesis in the bovine mammary gland. Dietary CLA supplementation may decrease fat content in cow milk and reduce milk fat output. Dairy cows ingesting feed with added CLAs may exhibit better energy balance during early lactation. CLA supplementation increases concentrations of these substances in milk. Furthermore, CLAs may modulate the immune functions in dairy cows. The aim of this paper was to present the aspects connected with the influence of conjugated linoleic acids on dairy cows.

Opis:
The impact of age at the fi rst calving on lifetime milk yield, life span and herd life in dairy cows. The increasing importance of functional traits (e.g. longevity) in cattle breeding is the result of their direct effect on profi tability of production. The main objective of the study was to determine the infl uence of age of the fi rst calving on lifetime milk yield, life span and herd life in Polish dairy cows. Cows were kept on farms with milk performance recording system. One-way analysis of variance was used to calculate the impact of age of the fi rst calving on selected traits. Cows that fi rst calving occurred at the age of 791–850 day achieved the highest lifetime milk, fat and protein yield per one day of life (P ≤ 0.01). Moreover, their life span was also the longest (P ≤ 0.01) and milk and protein yield per 1 day of utilization were the highest (P ≤ 0.01). Obtained results suggest that the most favorable time of calving for dairy heifers is between 791–850 day of life. Therefore, milk producers should carefully consider the most suitable time of heifers insemination in order to achieve the most satisfying milk production.
