Opis:
In this paper the results of experimental studies concerning the phenomenon of initial period of the wear of differently coated sintered carbide tools when dry orthogonal cutting of an AISI 321 austenitic stainless steel are presented. The motivation for this study results from the lack of technological guides concerning the optimal choice of coated cutting tools for machining of corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steels. A number of cutting tool inserts with the plane rake face made of a fine H10F sintered carbide substrate with specially deposited TiN, including TiCN, TiAlN, AlTiN and AlCrN single layers were used in wear tests. Both rake and flank faces of the cutting inserts were examined by optical and confocal microscopy after controlled tool wear. The possible wear mechanisms in terms of changes of the tool-chip contact were investigated.

Opis:
This article shows the results of research on the effectiveness of operation of an original tool air cooling system in cutting. A case of turning EN-GJL 250 cast iron with TH10 tungsten carbide cutting inserts without protective coatings was selected for testing. The paper gives constructional details of the tested tool cooling system and discusses the principle of its operation. The research carried out has shown that this way of cooling the cutting insert causes a significant decrease in temperature in all sub-areas of the cutting zone. In addition, air cooling has been proven to significantly reduce cutting tool wear and slightly improve the roughness of the machined surface. The results obtained showed that the proposed method of cooling can be successfully used in the treatment of grey cast iron. In the future, it may serve as a basis for the construction of a professional cooling system for industrial applications.

Opis:
One of the main problems of machining of moulds is the need for an effective monitoring system of wear of cutting tools. This paper presents the results of coordinate measurements of a cutting tool which were obtained by using the non-contact measuring system based on the ACCURA II coordinate measuring machine equipped with the LineScan laser measuring probe and the Calypso metrology software. Investigations were carried out for several measurement strategies including different measurement resolutions and scanning speeds. The results of the coordinate measurements obtained by using the above-mentioned coordinate measuring system were compared to the reference data measured by means of the InfiniteFocus microscope. The measurement results were analysed by means of two software packages: Focus Inspection and Zeiss Reverse Engineering. The point clouds measured by using the LineScan probe were characterized by the selected deviation statistics equal to 4-6 μm when a good match between measurement points and the reference data was obtained. Moreover, these statistics mainly depend on the measurement resolution. The results of the performed experimental research allowed for drawing conclusions concerning the significance of the effect of the adopted measurement strategies on the results of the non-contact coordinate measurements of the selected cutting tool. The application of the non-contact coordinate measurements to the above-mentioned measurement task may contribute to the development of regeneration methods for cutting tools applied for mould manufacturing.

Zaproponowano sposób obliczeniowego oszacowania wpływu zużycia narzędzi skrawających na intensywność zużywania korozyjnego warstwy wierzchniej materiału obrabianego. Cechą charakterystyczną podejścia jest ocena stopnia zużycia korozyjnego w zależności od zużycia narzędzia, parametrów chropowatości powierzchni przedmiotu obrabianego i stopnia utwardzania warstwy wierzchniej na zimno, a także parametrów warunków obróbki technologicznej (parametrów skrawania, geometrii narzędzia skrawającego, właściwości obrabianego materiału i narzędzia).
A possible variant for calculated estimation of the degree of the impact of the cutting tool wear on the value of the part’s surface layer wear obtained during processing with the edge tool, due to atmospheric corrosion, is presented. The feature is the evaluation of the wear rate and its numerical value depending on the tool wear, roughness parameters of the work piece surface, and the degree of cold hardening of the surface layer, as well as parameters of the technological machining conditions (cutting conditions, geometry of the tool cutting part, properties of the machined and the tool materials).

Opis:
The present research employs the statistical tool of response surface methodology (RSM) to evaluate the machining characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated high-speed steel (HSS) tools. The methodology used for depositing carbon nanotubes was Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD). Cutting speed, thickness of cut, and feed rate were chosen as machining factors, and cutting forces, cutting tooltip temperature, tool wear, and surface roughness were included as machining responses. Three-level of cutting conditions were followed. The face-centered, Central Composite Design (CCD) was followed to conduct twenty number of experiments. The speed of cutting and rate of feed have been identified as the most influential variables over the responses considered, followed by the thickness of cut. The model reveals the optimized level of cutting parameters to achieve the required objectives. The confirmation experiments were also carried out to validate the acceptable degree of variations between the experimental results and the predicted one.

Opis:
This review paper focuses on the up-to-date machinability characteristics of milling processes such as cutting forces, surface roughness and tool wear and their impacts on the cutting mechanism. The methodology pur-sued in this paper is to analyze the previous research articles published between 2019–2022 classifying them into the subcategoriesthat usemill-ing operation as manufacturing strategy. As known, milling is one of the most used machining processes in industry and often applied for academic studiesforawide range of materials. Therefore, used sensor systems, main aim and the preferred methodology were summarized in the context of this paper. Seemingly, a great number of machinability papers have been published recently which focuses on the several types of engineering ma-terials and utilized various types of sensor system to improve the surface roughness and tool life. In addition, the investigation showed that optimi-zation approaches have been applied broadly to detect the best machining conditions. Also, it was observed that several modeling approaches such as finite element analysis is a good alternative to analyze the process.

Opis:
In this paper, friction in longitudinal turning operations when using chamfered uncoated ceramic tools is investigated. Both tool-chip and workpiece - tool interactions are integrated in the friction model. The values of three force components were consequently measured during tool wear tests at different cutting speeds they were used as input data for computing the friction and normal forces acting on the rake and flank faces and, as a result, for determining the relevant friction coefficients. It was observed that both friction coefficients are sensitive to tool wear progression depending on the cutting speed used. For comparison the values of friction coefficient were determined for orthogonal (2D) friction model. The 3D friction model was tested for the machining of spheroidal cast iron (SCI) using uncoated nitride ceramic inserts.
Prowadzono analizę tarcia w operacjach toczenia wzdłużnego z użyciem narzędzi z niepowlekanej ceramiki azotowej. W przyjętym modelu tarcia uwzględniono synergię oddziaływania na styku ostrze - wiór i przedmiot - ostrze. Wykonano pomiary wartości trzech sił składowych w czasie próby zużycia ostrza dla różnych wartości prędkości skrawania. Określane wartości użyto jako dane wejściowe do wyznaczenia wartości siły tarcia i siły normalnej, i w kolejności do wyznaczenia wartości określonego współczynnika tarcia.

Opis:
Predictive force models for oblique metal cutting incorporating tool flank wear was carried out using a CNC lathe machine to turn mild carbon steel CS1030. The developed models are based on the fundamental mechanics of orthogonal cutting process, in which inclination angle is 0°. Workpieces were Cylindrical with wall thickness of 3mm and diameter of 100 mm. Cut thickness levels were 0.1, 0.17, 0.24 and 0.31 mm; cutting speeds were 100, 150 and 200 m/min; tool rake angle levels were -5, 0 and 5°. wearland sizes were selected as 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mm, where wearland size “0 mm” represents sharp tool. Results of the study indicate that tool flank wear has significant effect on oblique cutting forces. The oblique cutting forces were found to increase linearly with tool flank wear due to rubbing or ploughing forces in the wearland. The results also show that, the measured experimental oblique forces (power force, Fcm thrust force Ftm and rubbing force Frm) agreed with the predicted (power force Fc thrust force Ft, and rubbing force Fr) values under the corresponding cutting conditions. It is evident from the plots that the models give an excellent prediction of the cutting forces during oblique cutting.
