    Opis:
    W niniejszej pracy zaprezentowane zostały główne aspekty związane z odpornością ogniową pionowych elementów przeszklonych. Przedstawiona została metodyka badań oraz sposób klasyfikacji pionowych przegród przeszklonych w zakresie odporności ogniowej. Ponadto w artykule zreferowano wnioski płynące z badań odporności ogniowej elementów tego typu, prowadzonych na przestrzeni ostatnich lat przez Zakład Badań Ogniowych Instytutu Techniki Budowlanej.
    This paper discusses main problems related to the fire resistance of vertical glazed elements – test methodology and way of classification for this type of elements. In addition, the article presents the conclusions from the tests of fire resistance of such elements conducted in the last years by the Fire Research Department of Building Research Institute.

    Opis:
    W obrębie gęstej tkanki zurbanizowanych centrów miast bardzo często występuje problem ingerencji budowlanych w przestrzeni obiektów zabytkowych. Zdarza się, że uzupełnienia wymaga cenne historycznie otoczenie i realnym staje się problem współistnienia i nieszkodliwości względem chronionych budynków i struktur. Szkło, jako materiał przeźroczysty, umożliwia pełnowartościowe wymykanie stref będących oryginalnie przestrzeniami otwartymi i tworzenie niezaburzających odbioru obudów dla cennych struktur i elementów budynków. Ta bardzo szybko rozwijająca się gałąź technologii budowlanej umożliwia już wznoszenie pełnowartościowych pod każdym względem przegród zewnętrznych zapewniających jednocześnie dostęp optyczny do obiektów po drugiej ich stronie. Dodatkowo zaprojektowane do uzupełnienia struktury konstrukcyjne umożliwiają przejęcie wszelkich nowych obciążeń występujących na obiekcie, nie wpływając ujemnie na pierwotną statykę w elementach zabytkowych. W przedstawionych przykładach zaprezentowano szeroki wachlarz możliwości technologii szklanej w konkretnych uwarunkowaniach lokalnych.
    The problem of construction interventions in heritage building spaces is very common in urbanised city centres. In many cases, valued historical environments are subjected to infilling, which generates a real challenge of finding ways which ensure that protected historical buildings and structures can co-exist and not be degraded. Glass is a transparent material, which allows once open historic spaces to be delimited in ways that retain heritage values. It can also serve to protect valued structures and building elements in an undiminished way. The rapid development of glass technologies in construction now provides opportunities for introducing external walls, meeting all building requirements, and allowing full visual access to the building behind them. In addition, the new construction elements are able to carry all new structuralloads without affecting negatively the original stability of the heritage building. The wide range of new possibilities offered by glass technologies are presented on the basis of examples of applications in relation to the conditions of specific locations.

    Éva Eszter SzabóSchool of English and American StudiesDepartment of American Studies Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest Fence Walls: From the Iron Curtain to the US and Hungarian Border Barriers and the Emergence of Global Walls Abstract: This paper considers the resurgence of the Iron Curtain metaphor and its appropriateness in relation to the current border barriers in the US and the EU. It addresses the impact of the Iron Curtain both on Eastern Europe and on Western Europe, and it explores the legacy of this nearly hermetically sealed off borderland in the different border security and migration control approaches within the EU in the current era of emerging global walls. In my view, while the Iron Curtain metaphor is mistakenly applied to the current border barriers in the US and the EU alike, its legacy does contribute to the marked difference between Eastern and Western European attitudes and policies to the massive influx of migrants. From the Iron Curtain to the Hungarian border fence, the fence walls of the spatially identical border sections reflect not only the changing concepts of walls, but also the distinct historical experiences with migration. The current border barriers in Hungary and the EU, however, draw on the US–Mexican border barrier that aims to stop unauthorized entry while keeping the gates open in both directions for legal cross-border movement in contrast with the prison walls of the Iron Curtain.  Keywords: US-Mexican border barrier, Hungarian border fence, unauthorized migration, Eastern Europe, Cold War, Iron Curtain, border walls
