    Lawrence M. Mead presented an interesting argument as to why poverty exists in the United States. He problematizes the culture of the poor of which ethnic minorities over-represent. By referring to the geographic regions from which these ethnic minorities came from, he globalised the question of poverty in the US. This invites a global policy debate rather than a US-centric policy debate. Indeed, Mead so freely made references to Africa and the African culture severally throughout his commentary. It is against this backdrop that I show that Mead was right to a large extent on the question of inner-driven individualised orientation. However, he overestimates its influence and misreads what culture is. He presented the culture of poverty as the antecedent of poverty. It was concluded that manipulating both internal drive (internal locus of control) and the structure of society is a more effective way to tackle poverty.

    Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań nad sposobem komunikacji w kulturze ubóstwa, które są zawarte w wypowiedziach ludzi skrajnie ubogich, charakteryzujących codzienne interakcje z innymi. Analizowane procesy komunikowania ograniczone są do interakcji w ramach rodziny. Głównymi źródłami analizy prezentowanej w tym artykule są prace O. Lewisa, które stanowią podstawę teoretyczną dotyczącą koncepcji kultury ubóstwa zaproponowaną przez autora, a także Pamiętniki bezrobotnych, których opublikowanie w latach 30.  XX wieku oraz 2003-2006 było odpowiedzią na rozpisane konkursy pamiętnikarskie. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie podobnych sposobów interakcyjnych i komunikacyjnych, które w kulturze ubóstwa charakteryzują się wyizolowaniem społecznym. Przejawem tego jest zaniechanie komunikacji, obranie w relacjach z innymi strategii milczenia. Jednym z zagadnień artykułu jest charakterystyka dyskursu, podejmowania prób porozumiewania z tymi, którzy prezentują przewagę wobec osób słabszych, będących w pozycji podporządkowania.
    The article presents the results of research on the way of communication in the culture of poverty, which are included in the statements of extremely poor people, which characterize everyday interactions with others. The analyzed communication processes are limited to interactions within the family. The main sources of the analysis presented in this article are the works of O. Lewis, which constitute the theoretical basis for the concept of the culture of poverty proposed by the author, as well as Diaries of the Unemployed, the publication of which in the 1930s and 2003-2006 was a response to the written diary competitions. The aim of this article is to show similar methods of interaction and communication that are characterized by social isolation in the culture of poverty. It is manifested by abandoning communication and choosing silence strategies in relations with others. One of the issues of the article is the description of discourse, making attempts to communicate with those who present an advantage over the weaker people who are in the position of subjection.

    The paper addresses the issues relating to the education and socialization of children living in the culture of poverty, i.e. the situation when the privation affecting the family is not merely a convergence of many incidents, but it becomes a long-lasting experience which results in generational encumbrance. The consequences of such a situation are noticeable in many spheres of children’s and adolescents’ lives, particularly at home, school and among peers. The main purpose of the paper is to indicate educational problems of children living in poverty and describe the areas which impede socialization and educational interventions. The paper highlights the value of education as a real chance to break the cycle of generational poverty stemming from the culture of privation. It also presents school as an institution which reinforces inequalities, and family – as an institution which socializes to poverty. The article contains indications on social work with children from poor families. The paper contains research analyses performed based on such sources as “Memoirs of the Unemployed,” published in Poland in 2003–2006 (5 volumes) and in 1933. The analyses undertaken in the paper are referred to the concept of the culture of poverty proposed by Oscar Lewis.

    The article shows the problems of people who, marked by extreme poverty, limit their functioning to meet basic needs, but in extreme difficulties they refer to God's interference, show their attitudes towards religion and characterize their own religious behavior. Some analyzes show the individual and social effects of life in the culture of poverty, including reducing the celebration of religious holidays to experiencing mainly material shortages.The article also contains the results of sociological research referring to homeless religiosity. The main source of the analysis are the "Diaries of the unemployed" published in 1933, as well as the contemporary "Diaries of the unemployed" published in the years 2003 - 2006. The biographical materials of the poor contain many religious threads of reflection on their own existence, on the sense of fighting poverty, a sense abandonment and loneliness. As indicated my research, the poor in extremely difficult problems, which cannot be remedied using proven mechanisms, they refer to spiritual issues - faith, doubt and loss of faith, the possibility of completing the decalogue. The article also tackles the issues of moral evaluation of poor behavior and their religious location.

    The aim of the article is an analysis of the theme of poverty as one of key concepts in the work of Ryszard Kapuściński. The article offers an overview of Kapuściński’s poverty discourse, which relied on a broad, multi-dimensional concept of poverty. In Kapuściński’s work there was room for both cultural and subjective dimensions, for an idea of a polarized world divided between the rich and the poor, for an exploration of cultures of poverty and consumerism, and also for taking into account the modern context of globalization, increasing consumerism, and influence of the media on the marginalization of the poverty issue in the public debate. The final theme is Kapuściński’s identification with the poor and their lives, which in his view was a necessary requirement for being a reporter/journalist.

    Brak pracy rodziców w znaczący sposób odbija się na realizacji podstawowych funkcji w rodzinie, w tym bardzo ważnej funkcji wychowawczej. Niedostatek i bieda w rodzinach stanowią źródło wielu kłopotów w relacjach więzi pomiędzy rodzicami a dziećmi, wyostrza się też w dużym stopniu problem z wykształceniem dzieci, a także ma bezpośredni wpływ na spędzanie czasu wolnego dzieci. Zubożenie rodziny powoduje, że inwestowanie w rozwój i wykształcenie dzieci staje się w dużym stopniu ograniczone. Ubóstwo i bieda w rodzinach bezrobotnych uniemożliwiają w znaczący sposób dostęp do dóbr kultury, turystyki i wypoczynku, co sprzyja alienacji więzi środowiskowych i towarzyskich, a w następnej kolejności izolacji społecznej. Artykuł ten poświęcony jest badaniom, które dotyczą spędzania czasu wolnego w rodzinach bezrobotnych. Z badań wynika, że w objętych sondażem diagnostycznym rodzinach funkcja wychowawcza jest przez nich w niewystarczającym stopniu wypełniana.
    The lack of parents’ employment finds its reflection in the realisation of basic family functions including so important an educational function. Privation and poverty suffered by such families are the core of many problems relating to family bonds (in particular those between parents and their offspring), children’s education as much as directly to the way children spend their time off. Family’s impoverishment leads to restrictions on the investments in children’s development and education. Moreover, poverty in jobless families prevents them from participating in or considerably hinders their access to cultural achievements, tourism and recreation, which, in turn, leads social alienation and next to social isolation. The article focuses on the research devoted to the ways of spending their free time by the members of jobless families. The results of the research (based on a diagnostic survey) show that educational function in those families is often insufficiency performed.

    Communion is a new form of business management that organizes help for people living in poverty, with the aim to reduce poverty and social inequality. The idea proposed in 1991 by Chiara Lubich among members of the worldwide Focolare Movement gained many supporters, and is implemented in 800 companies in several countries. Key questions are whether and how to help; identifying common causes of poverty – especially lack of appropriate interpersonal relationships – are ways out of poverty and social exclusion. Communion requires the involvement of not only entrepreneurs, but also business stakeholders, and creates new elements of organizational culture. Via a comparative analysis of the economy of communion with the social economy and corporate social responsibility, I examine the convergence of economy of communion with the Church’s social teaching.
