Opis:
The subject of this article is the use of language information by the analysis of the intercultural communication processes. The author describes the so-called precedent phenomena, understood as texts, sentences (for example proverbs, aphorisms, songs), and names, which contain concepts that are especially important for a given culture, wide wellknown for the majority of individuals. Precedent phenomena often function as tools for the conceptualization of experience. Contrastive anthropology deals with comparison of the culture types; it is based on certain parameters. The language and text information gained through this comparison is very useful because the evaluation of any culture type (own or foreign) is expressed (in a more or less transparent way) by the form, structure and content of the so-called culture texts. The author analyses some Russian artistic and journalist texts and then shows the predominantly positive evaluation of Poland and Poles. It relates especially to such culture spheres as science and literature. Inversely, the Russians evaluate the Polish way of politics and national character as rather negative.

Opis:
The paper is an attempt to present a model of an attitude towards strangers: getting to know, tolerating, accepting, and finally assimilating them, in terms of funeral rites, and thus of different religion. Such is a case manifested by an appearance of bustum type graves within the Przeworsk culture cemeteries in Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) in the Roman Iron Age.

Opis:
This article is a contribution to the study of Polish cultural patterns’ sources and their performance in terms of stylistics and sociology. The methodological basis for the article is the idea in accordance to which each linguistic behavior is marked both stylistically and sociologically. Linguistic means abstracted from specific language behaviors are guidelines of stylistic and genre affinity of a text as well as social, pragmatic and genre competence of its creator. An illustration of this idea is the picture of the functioning of lexemes wojna (war) and wojneczka (diminutive of war). Their scope of meaning remains in conflict with respect to the connotation, association and lexicographical shots bundled with designatum of formative base, i.e. the lexeme war. Hence, the main aim of this article has been the question about the functioning of these lexemes in the culturally differential texts and about the scope of meaning depending on the social and functional conditions of use.The source of “unique” functioning of wojenka and wojneczka lexemes proved to be a folk song to be exact, where a large number of both diminutives results: first, from the fact that folk poetry is melic; secondly from typical for rural community point of view, according to which wojna, wojenka, wojneczka mean ‘a faraway place, a vague land’. A different scope of word meaning of the studied lexemes formed in legion songs from the First World War and some uprising songs. It allowed to talk about war with the same gentleness as about women and to emphasize the glorification of the specific kind of life and war deeds, as well as specific kind of joy and excitement in the fight for freedom of homeland, which was enslaved for 123 years. The custom of naming the hostilities wojenka or wojneczka and attributing to themslightly different meanings was recorded in the folk language but it has been gradually vanishing since the Second World War. Nowadays the word wojenka is used in a broader sense than given in dictionaries and refers not only to military conflict but to all types of conflicts, and very often gets ironic or humorous meaning. It is clear however, that the patterns of talking about a war which have achieved status of folkloreor mass, are up-to-date and they play a role of a cultural identifier.

Opis:
In the last decades of the twentieth century, the concept of agency – i.e., purposeful self-determination based on calculated choice – enjoyed a hegemonic position in the literature of the social history of European immigration to the United States. The original inspiration for this development in immigration historiography was the path breaking 1964 essay by essay by Rudolph Vecoli challenging the classic work on Oscar Handlin, The Uprooted (1951), which saw immigration as a jarring experience of alienation and confusion that left immigrants defensive and poorly adjusted in their new American homes. This essay reexamines the conflict of views associated with Vecoli’s challenge to Handlin in two contexts. One is the conceptual and empirical foundations of immigration historiography, and the second is the origin and early development of the New Social History, in British and American labor history and in the history of African American slavery and in Western neo-Marxism thought, which sought a humanist alternative to Communist ideology. The essay seeks critical engagement with agency, and advances the view that we should open ourselves once more to seeking guidance in Handlin’s interpretive understandings, which also suggests a reevaluation of the contributions of Thomas and Znaniecki’s The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, the now century-old source of Handlin’s views.

Opis:
The article considers the economic and political use of small lead seals (tag seals) to validate different kinds of social relations in early medieval Poland and Rus’. Originated in Antiquity, the practice of sealing peaked in Byzantium from where it spread to Early Rus’. This is reflected, for example, in the use in late 11th-late 14th centuries of small lead seals referred to as the “Drohiczyn type”. In this paper I put forward an opinion that not all the early medieval small lead seals should be attributed to “coinless economy”. A study of the corpus of small lead seals from Drohiczyn and Czermno, and finds from Mazovia, has identified a group with iconography identical to the Polish Hohlpfennig, suggesting they were commercial-customs small lead seals used by the Piast dynasty, contemporary with the bracteates introduced in the first half/mid-13th-early 14th centuries. The extraordinary number of small lead seals found in Drohiczyn possibly reflects the outstanding position of the town in the Eastern and Central European relationships as well as a short-term relocation of trade routes leading north, caused by the military conflicts of the 1240-1280s in the upper course of the Western Bug. The practice of sealing could have been introduced by Conrad of Mazovia to Poland from Early Rus’. Subsequently, the small Polish lead seals might have contributed to the emergence of lead cloth seals in Western Europe as part of a cultural transfer.

Opis:
The article discusses four facets of the subject of legitimacy. The first issue concerns the understanding of the concept of legitimacy. The Author opts for a definition which treats 'belief in legitimacy' (Legitimitätsglaube) as central for the whole concept and regards legitimacy as a 'popular philosophy of power'. The second issue deals with the Weberian type of legal-rational legitimacy. Following Mommsen the Author proposes to treat substantive and procedural brands of democracy as separate sub-types of legal-rational legitimacy. The third issue concerns the inclusion of views on the economic system as part of beliefs about state legitimacy (which was not explicitly stated by Weber). Finally, the fourth postulates introducing to academic discourse national-democratic legitimacy as a significant form of justification of a political system. The final part of the paper discusses, quite extensive, many specific details of the typology suggested by the Author.
